Propagation of ultrarelativistically intense laser pulse in a self-trapping mode in a near critical density plasma makes it possible to produce electron bunches of extreme parameters appropriate for different state of art applications. Based on the 3D PIC simulations, it has been demonstrated how the best efficiency of electron acceleration in terms of the total charge of high-energy electrons and laser-to-electrons conversion rate can be achieved. For given laser pulse energy the universal way is a proper matching of laser hot spot size and electron plasma density to the laser pulse duration. The recommendation to achieve the highest yield of high-energy electrons is to compress laser pulse as much as possible. As example, compression of the few tens fs pulse to the 10 fs pulse leads to generation of the high-energy electron bunch with the highest total charge to exhibit conversion efficiency exceeding 50% for the Joule-level laser pulse energies.

Femtosecond laser pulse propagation in a relativistic self-trapping regime (RST) in a near-critical density plasma makes it possible to maximize the total charge of the accelerating electrons and laser-to-electrons conversion rate, that can be used to provide a large amount of the THz range coherent transition radiation. The three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate how such transition radiation generates when electrons escape into vacuum either from the low-density target itself, or after passing through a thin foil located at the target end. Advantage of the RST regime for generation of THz pulses is clearly demonstrated as compared to laser irradiation of such a standard target as a foil with preplasma on its front side. Simulation performed has shown that for the optimized laser-target matching a 2-J femtosecond laser pulse is able to produce quasi-unipolar Thz pulses with energy exceeding 100 mJ., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

The Maxwell equations based 3D analytical solution for the terahertz half-cycle electromagnetic wave transition radiation pulse has been found. This solution describes generation and propagation of transition radiation into free space from laser-produced relativistic electron bunch crossing a target-vacuum interface as a result of ultrashort laser pulse interaction with a thin high-conductivity target. The analytical solution found complements the theory of laser initiated transition radiation by describing the generated THz wave shape at the arbitrary distance from the generating target surface domain including near-field zone rather than the standard far-field characterization. The analytical research has also been supplemented with the 3D simulations using the finite-diference time-domain (FDTD) method, which makes it possible for description of much wider spatial domain as compared to that from the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. The results reported fundamentally shed light on the interfere of an electron bunch field and THz field of broadband transition radiation from laser-plasma interaction studied for a long time in the experiments with solid density plasma and may in future inspire them to targeted measurements and investigations of unique super intense half-cycle THz radiation waves near the laser target.

In a dense gas plasma a short laser pulse propagates in relativistic self-trapping mode, which enables effective conversion of laser energy to the accelerated electrons. This regime sustains effective loading which maximizes the total charge of the accelerating electrons, that provides a large amount of betatron radiation. The 3D particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate how such regime triggers X-ray generation with 0.1-1 MeV photon energies, low divergence, and high brightness. It is shown that a 135 TW laser can be used to produce $3\times 10^{10}$ photons of $>10$ keV energy and a 1.2 PW laser makes it possible generating about $10^{12}$ photons in the same energy range. The laser-to-gammas energy conversion efficiency is up to $10^{-4}$ for the high-energy photons, $\sim 100$ keV, while the conversion efficiency to the entire keV-range x-rays is estimated to be a few tenths of a percent.

A significant step has been made towards understanding the physics of the transient surface current triggered by ejected electrons during the interaction of a short intense laser pulse with a high-conductivity target. Unlike the commonly discussed hypothesis of neutralization current generation as a result of the fast loss of hot electrons to the vacuum, the proposed mechanism is associated with excitation of the fast current by electric polarization due to transition radiation triggered by ejected electrons. We present a corresponding theoretical model and compare it with two simulation models using the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) and PIC (particle-in-cell) methods. Electron acceleration has been optimized based on 3D PIC simulations of a short laser pulse interacting with low-density plasma targets to find the pulse propagation regime that maximizes the charge of high-energy electron bunches. This regime corresponds to laser pulse propagation in a self-trapping mode where the diffraction divergence is balanced by the relativistic nonlinearity such that relativistic self-focusing on the axis does not happen and the laser beam radius stays unchanged during pulse propagation in a plasma over many Rayleigh lengths. Such a regime occurs for a near-critical density if the pulse length considerably exceeds both the plasma wavelength and the pulse width. Electron acceleration occurs in a traveling cavity filled with a high-frequency laser field and a longitudinal electrostatic single-cycle field ("self-trapping regime"). Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated a high electron yield that allows an efficient production of gamma radiation, electron--positron pairs, neutrons, and even pions from a catcher-target., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures

To maximize the charge of a high-energy electron beam accelerated by an ultra-intense laser pulse propagating in a subcritical plasma, the pulse length should be longer than both the plasma wavelength and the laser pulse width, which is quite different from the standard bubble regime. In addition, the laser--plasma parameters should be chosen to produce the self-trapping regime of relativistic channeling, where the diffraction divergence is balanced by the relativistic nonlinearity such that the laser beam radius is unchanged during pulse propagation in a plasma over many Rayleigh lengths. The condition for such a self-trapping regime is the same as what was empirically found in several previous simulation studies in the form of the pulse width matching condition. Here, we prove these findings for a subcritical plasma, where the total charge of high-energy electrons reaches the multi-nC level, by optimization in a 3D PIC simulation study and compare the results with an analytic theory of relativistic self-focusing. A very efficient explicitly demonstrated generation of high-charge electron beams opens a way to a high-yield production of gammas, positrons, and photonuclear particles., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

A strong electron current triggered by a femtosecond relativistically intense laser pulse in a foil coil-like target is shown to be able to generate a solenoidal-type extremely strong magnetic field. The magnetic field lifetime sufficiently exceeds the laser pulse duration and is defined mainly by the target properties. The process of the magnetic field generation was studied with 3D PIC simulations. It is demonstrated that the pulse and the target parameters allow controlling the field strength and duration. The scheme studied is of great importance for laser-based magnetization technologies.

We present the experimental results on ion acceleration by petawatt femtosecond laser solid interaction and explore strategies to enhance ion energy. The irradiation of micrometer thick (0.2 - 6.0 micron) Al foils with a virtually unexplored intensity regime (8x10^19 W/cm^2 - 1x10^21 W/cm^2) resulting in ion acceleration along the rear and the front surface target normal direction is investigated. The maximum energy of protons and carbon ions, obtained at optimised laser intensity condition (by varying laser energy or focal spot size), exhibit a rapid intensity scaling as I^0.8 along the rear surface target normal direction and I^0.6 along the front surface target normal direction. It was found that proton energy scales much faster with laser energy rather than the laser focal spot size. Additionally, the ratio of maximum ion energy along the both directions is found to be constant for the broad range of target thickness and laser intensities. A proton flux is strongly dominated in the forward direction at relatively low laser intensities. Increasing the laser intensity results in the gradual increase in the backward proton flux and leads to almost equalisation of ion flux in both directions in the entire energy range. Electron acceleration by relativistically intense laser beam propagating along a curved surface allows to split softly the accelerated electron bunch and the laser beam. The presence of a curved surface allows to switch an adiabatic invariant of electrons in the wave instantly leaving the gained energy to the particles. The efficient acceleration is provided by the presence of strong transient quasistationary fields in the interaction region and a long efficient acceleration length. The curvature of the surface allows to select the accelerated particles and provides their narrow angular distribution. The mechanism at work is explicitly demonstrated in theoretical models and experiments.

An effective scheme of synchronized laser-triggered ion acceleration and the corresponding theoretical model are proposed for a slow light pulse of relativistic intensity, which penetrates into a near-critical-density plasma, strongly slows, and then increases its group velocity during propagation within a target. The 3D PIC simulations confirm this concept for proton acceleration by a femtosecond petawatt-class laser pulse experiencing relativistic self-focusing, quantify the characteristics of the generated protons, and demonstrate a significant increase of their energy compared with the proton energy generated from optimized ultrathin solid dense foils., Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett

A new, maximum proton energy, $e$, scaling law with the laser pulse energy, $E_L$ has been derived from the results of 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Utilizing numerical modelling, protons are accelerated during interactions of the femtosecond relativistic laser pulses with the plain semi-transparent targets of optimum thickness [Esirkepov {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 105001 (2206)]. The scaling, $e \sim E_L^{0.7}$, has been obtained for the wide range of laser energies, different spot sizes, and laser pulse durations. Our results show that the proper selection of foil target optimum thicknesses, results in a very promising increase of the ion energy with the laser intensity even in the range of parameters below the radiation pressure (light sail) regime. The proposed analytical model is consistent with numerical simulations.

The efficient generation of intense X-rays and $\gamma$-radiation is studied. The scheme is based on the relativistic mirror concept, {\it i.e.}, a flying thin plasma slab interacts with a counterpropagating laser pulse, reflecting part of it in the form of an intense ultra-short electromagnetic pulse having an up-shifted frequency. In the proposed scheme a series of relativistic mirrors is generated in the interaction of the intense laser with a thin foil target as the pulse tears off and accelerates thin electron layers. A counterpropagating pulse is reflected by these flying layers in the form of an ensemble of ultra-short pulses resulting in a significant energy gain of the reflected radiation due to the momentum transfer from flying layers., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. A system of nonlocal electron-transport equations for small perturbations in a magnetized plasma is derived using the systematic closure procedure of V. Yu. Bychenkov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 4405 (1995). Solution to the linearized kinetic equation with a Landau collision operator is obtained in the diffusive approximation. The Fourier components of the longitudinal, oblique, and transversal electron fluxes are found in an explicit form for quasistatic conditions in terms of the generalized forces: the gradients of density and temperature, and the electric field. The full set of nonlocal transport coefficients is given and discussed. Nonlocality of transport enhances electron fluxes across magnetic field above the values given by strongly collisional local theory. Dispersion and damping of magnetohydrodynamic waves in weakly collisional plasmas is discussed. Test particle studies of electron scattering on ions, in an oscillatory electromagnetic field have shown that standard theoretical assumptions of small angle collisions and phase independent orbits are incorrect for electron trajectories with drift velocities smaller than quiver velocity amplitude. This leads to significant enhancement of the electron energy gain and the inverse bremsstrahlung heating rate in strong laser fields. Nonlinear processes such as Coulomb focusing and correlated collisions of electrons being brought back to the same ion by the oscillatory field are responsible for large angle, head-on scattering processes. The statistical importance of these trajectories has been examined for mono-energetic beam-like, Maxwellian and highly anisotropic electron distribution functions.
