Abstract

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd({\alpha},2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a K{\pi}= 2+ {\gamma} vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a K{\pi}=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed., Comment: Published in Physical Rev C

Abstract

Low-spin states of 157Dy have been studied using the JUROGAM II array, following the 155Gd ({\alpha}, 2n) reaction at a beam energy of 25 MeV. The level scheme of 157Dy has been expanded with four new bands. Rotational structures built on the [523]5/2- and [402]3/2+ neutron orbitals constitute new additions to the level scheme as do many of the inter- and intra-band transitions. This manuscript also reports the observation of cross I- to (I-1)- and I- to (I-1)+ E1 dipole transitions inter-linking structures built on the [523]5/2- (band 5) and [402]3/2+ (band 7) neutron orbitals. These interlacing band structures are interpreted as the bands of parity doublets with simplex quantum number s = -i related to possible octupole correlations., Comment: Published in Physical Review C (2019)

Abstract

Isospin properties of dipole excitations in 74 Ge are investigated using the ({\alpha},{\alpha}'{\gamma}) reaction and compared to ({\gamma},{\gamma}) data. The results indicate that the dipole excitations in the energy region of 6 to 9 MeV adhere to the scenario of the recently found splitting of the region of dipole excitations into two separated parts: one at low energy, being populated by both isoscalar and isovector probes, and the other at high energy, excited only by the electromagnetic probe. Relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation (RQTBA) calculations show a reduction in the isoscalar E1 strength with an increase in excitation energy, which is consistent with the measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the ¹⁵⁵Gd(α,2n)¹⁵⁷Dy and ¹⁴⁸Nd(¹²C,5n)¹⁵⁵Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ=2⁺γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2⁻ neutron orbital, in both odd-A155,157Dy isotopes. Abstract

A comprehensive systematic study is made for the collective β and γ bands in even-even isotopes with neutron numbers N=88 to 92 and proton numbers Z=62(Sm) to 70 (Yb). Data, including excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) values, and branching ratios from previously published experiments are collated with new data presented for the first time in this study. The experimental data are compared to calculations using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) based on the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). A realistic potential in the quadrupole shape parameters V(β,γ) is determined from potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated using the CDFT. The parameters of the 5DCH are fixed and contained within the CDFT. Overall, a satisfactory agreement is found between the data and the calculations. In line with the energy staggering S(I) of the levels in the 2γ+ bands, the potential energy surfaces of the CDFT calculations indicate γ-soft shapes in the N=88 nuclides, which become γ rigid for N=90 and N=92. The nature of the 02+ bands changes with atomic number. In the isotopes of Sm to Dy, they can be understood as β vibrations, but in the Er and Yb isotopes the 02+ bands have wave functions with large components in a triaxial superdeformed minimum. In the vicinity of 152Sm, the present calculations predict a soft potential in the β direction but do not find two coexisting minima. This is reminiscent of 152Sm exhibiting an X(5) behavior. The model also predicts that the 03+ bands are of two-phonon nature, having an energy twice that of the 02+ band. This is in contradiction with the data and implies that other excitation modes must be invoked to explain their origin. peerReviewed

Abstract

The challenge of achieving high resolution in binary reactions involving an outgoing high energy neutron is solved by detecting the γ-ray decay of populated excited states in an array of escape suppressed HPGe detectors in coincidence with fast neutrons detected in a wall of scintillator detectors 2m down beam of the target. The selectivity of the arrangement is of the order of 1 in 1000. The time-of-flight difference is sufficient to separate fast neutrons from direct reactions from a large background of statistical neutrons from fusion-evaporation reactions. Our interest is in the wavefunction of the 02+ state at 740 keV in the N=88 nucleus 150Sm which, with the 02+ state in 100Ru, are the only two excited states observed in 2β2ν double β-decay.

Abstract

Low and medium spin collective structures in 158Er have been studied using the 150Sm(12C,4nγγ) fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of Elab = 65 MeV. A band built on the 02+ excitation has been established and extended to Jπ = 18+ from the analysis of γ-γ coincidence relationships, intensity arguments and DCO ratios. The 02+ band in 158Er presents a similar trend to the 02+ bands in the lighter N = 90 isotones but lies about 125 keV higher. This systematic trend supports a similar configuration for the 02+ bands in the N = 90 isotones.

Abstract

An initial series of experiments utilising the (3He,n) reactions have been carried out at iThemba LABS. These are complimentary to transfer reactions such as (t,p) stripping or (p,t) pick-up reactions measurements using magnetic spectrometers. However, in the past, (3He,n) measurements have suffered from ambiguities due to the low energy resolution inbuilt into the time-of-flight techniques used. By combining neutron detection techniques with the AFRODITE γ-ray array, it has been shown that very good energy resolutions can be achieved. This enables the relative strengths of two proton stripping to excited states, separated by only a few keV, to be accurately measured. This technique has been applied to first excited 02+ states and, in particular to those uniquely seen in double β-decay.

A γ-spectroscopy study to search for chirality in 193Tl was conducted. Three negative-parity bands with close excitation energies and almost equal B(M1)/B(E2) values were identified. These bands were associated with the same πh9=2 ⊗vi13=2² configuration which is suitable for chiral symmetry. Abstract

An initial series of experiments utilising the (³He,n) reactions have been carried out at iThemba LABS. These are complimentary to transfer reactions such as (t,p) stripping or (p,t) pick-up reactions measurements using magnetic spectrometers. However, in the past, (³He,n) measurements have suffered from ambiguities due to the low energy resolution inbuilt into the time-of-flight techniques used. By combining neutron detection techniques with the AFRODITE γ-ray array, it has been shown that very good energy resolutions can be achieved. This enables the relative strengths of two proton stripping to excited states, separated by only a few keV, to be accurately measured. This technique has been applied to first excited 02+ states and, in particular to those uniquely seen in double β-decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Low and medium spin collective structures in 158Er have been studied using the 150Sm(12C,4nγγ) fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of Elab = 65 MeV. A band built on the 02+ excitation has been established and extended to Jп = 18+ from the analysis of γ-γ coincidence relationships, intensity arguments and DCO ratios. The 02+ band in 158Er presents a similar trend to the 02+ bands in the lighter N = 90 isotones but lies about 125 keV higher. Abstract

Knowledge of the exact microscopic structure of the 01+ ground state and first excited 02+ state in 150Sm is required to understand the branching of double β decay to these states from 150Nd. The detailed spectroscopy of 150Sm and 152Gd has been studied using (α.xn) reactions and the γ-ray arrays AFRODITE and JUROGAM II. Consistently strong El transitions are observed between the excited Kπ = 02+ bands and the lowest negative parity bands in both nuclei. These results are discussed in terms of the possible permanent octupole deformation in the first excited Kπ = 02+ band and also in terms of the "tidal wave" model of Frauendorf. Abstract

We review the current experimental data on collective structures within the pairing gap of even-even deformed nuclei, with emphasis on nuclei near mass number A∼150. The essential physics that determines the characteristics of the first excited 0+ (02+) state in these nuclei has been in dispute for several decades. Interpretation of these states in terms of surface β quadrupole vibrations has often been challenged. We examine the role that configuration dependent pairing can play in these levels particularly at the onset of deformation as major shells fill. In all deformed nuclei rotational bands are found experimentally, starting at a state with spin 2+ with excitation energies near the middle of the pairing gap. These rotational bands, with quantum number Kπ=2+, are usually referred to as γ bands and have been identified with quadrupole surface vibrations in the plane perpendicular to the major axis of deformation. However Kπ=2+ bands can also arise due to the breaking of axial symmetry of the quadrupole shape. We discuss data that can help with these different interpretations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Low-spin positive-parity yrare states of 66154Dy88 were established using the 155Gd(3He,4n) reaction at a beam energy of Elab=37.5 MeV. The AFRODITE spectrometer array at iThemba LABS was used to record γγ coincidences and measure DCO ratios and polarisation asymmetries. The Kπ=2+γ band has been observed up to spin 13+ in the odd spins and to 12+ in the even spins. The staggering parameter S(I) of the γ band is compared to that found in other N = 88 isotones. Different behaviour of S(I) with increasing spin is observed for each of the isotones. We conjecture that the variation in S(I) is mainly due to mixing of the even-spin states with the same spin and parity states in neighbouring rotational bands. A second Kπ=2+ band has been established up to a spin of 12+ in the even spins. We suggest that this is a γ band based on the Jπ=0+ state at Ex=660.6 keV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The nature of the chiral candidate bands in Ag106, one of only two known examples of candidates which actually cross, is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Lifetimes have been determined for these bands in Ag106 using the Doppler-shift attenuation method with the ?-detector array AFRODITE. The level scheme of Ag106 has been extended, and three negative-parity bands have been observed to high spins. Configurations were assigned to the negative-parity bands based on a quasiparticle alignment analysis and on configuration-fixed constrained relativistic mean field calculations. The excitation energies, B(M1) and B(E2) values, as well as B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been compared with results of particle-rotor model calculations. From the investigations, it is concluded that the three close-lying negative-parity bands are a two-quasiparticle high-K band and a pair of four-quasiparticle bands. We report on low-spin states of 154Dy populated via the reaction 155Gd (He3,4n) with a beam energy of 37.5 MeV from the Separated Sector Cyclotron at iThemba Laboratory. The AFRODITE ?-ray spectrometer was used to establish new E1 transitions between bands of opposite parity. The measurements broaden the N=88 systematics on the relationship between the first excited positive-parity pairing isomer band and the lowest-lying negative-parity band as the nuclear quadrupole deformation decreases with increasing proton number. In a region of strong octupole correlations the data suggest that the spectroscopy of N=88 nuclei is driven by stable octupole deformations and not by vibrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
