The article looks at studies that examined the resistance of pea varieties to Fusarium wilt. In the 1958 tests, isolated healthy plants appeared in twenty-two susceptible varieties. To test for their wilt-resistance, seeds from fifty-three of these apparently resistant plants were sown in Yaxley and Coggeshall, England in 1959. Forty-nine per cent of the healthy plants selected in 1958 were in fact wilt-resistant. Observations on varietal characteristics were made and only three appeared to be not true to varietal type. Selection only, therefore, can quickly provide resistant stocks from important but susceptible varieties such as British Lion, Lincoln and Little Marvel. The experiments were recorded by four independent observers on three occasions between June 17 and July 7 in Yaxley, and four times between June 10 and July 5 in Coggeshall. Twenty-three of the varieties were wilt-resistant, four were susceptible and eight very susceptible.

This article presents a study on the resistance of peas to fusarium wilt. In experiments on infested land at Rayne, Essex and Yaxley, Peterborough in England, 44 out of 90 pea varieties were resistant to wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. pisi. There were 77 out of 146 which are known to be resistant in Britain. Most of the commercial varieties are wilt-susceptible and there is no correlation between morphological characters, maturity or particular commercial use, and reaction to wilt. Testing for wilt resistance by artificial inoculation methods gave inaccurate forecasts of performance in the field, unless soil from infested fields was used. Further progress in combating pea wilt can best be made by breeding resistance into the susceptible commercially popular varieties.

This article discusses the presence of Pea Wilt, a plant disease which covers the whole of the pea failure complex due to a number of Fusaria, in Great Britain. The majority of the diseased plants were rather stunted, with the lower and, nearly always, the upper leaves, beginning to turn yellow and roll under along their mid-veins. This wilting and yellowing occurred as the flowers were forming, and diseased plants rarely bore full pods. Patchiness of the crop was well marked in some cases, while in others lateral spread of the disease along the rows could be inferred and, rarely, isolated plants had been infected. As in the case of most soil-borne Fusarium diseases, perhaps the best method of control is by the breeding of resistant varieties of the host plant.

This article presents information on the two major types of disease of gladiolus caused by Fusaria. In the Fusarium rot of stored corms which is attributed to Fusarium oxysporum, small reddish-brown, water-soaked spots may develop on the sides and lower halves of the corm. During the storage period these spots increase in size and become more or less circular, rather sunken, ridged lesions, up to an inch in diameter. When slightly infected corms are planted, they give rise to weak plants which may die before flowering. The Fusarium Yellows disease, which is attributed to Fusarium orthoceras, is characterized by the yellowing of the foliage and collapse of the flower spike during the growing season.
