Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to summarise current and future applications of dietary assessment technologies in nutrition surveys in developed countries. It includes the discussion of key points and highlights of subsequent developments from a panel discussion to address strengths and weaknesses of traditional dietary assessment methods (food records, FFQ, 24 h recalls, diet history with interviewer-assisted data collection) v. new technology-based dietary assessment methods (web-based and mobile device applications). The panel discussion ‘Traditional methods v. new technologies: dilemmas for dietary assessment in population surveys’, was held at the 9th International Conference on Diet and Activity Methods (ICDAM9), Brisbane, September 2015. Despite respondent and researcher burden, traditional methods have been most commonly used in nutrition surveys. However, dietary assessment technologies offer potential advantages including faster data processing and better data quality. This is a fast-moving field and there is evidence of increasing demand for the use of new technologies amongst the general public and researchers. There is a need for research and investment to support efforts being made to facilitate the inclusion of new technologies for rapid, accurate and representative data.

Abstract

Ondanks de toegenomen virtualisering van ons werk en de daarmee samenhangende nieuwe werkvormen is het kantoor voor veel mensen nog steeds de belangrijkste plek waar het werk wordt gedaan. Daarmee is het kantoor ook een plek waar veel tijd wordt doorgebracht. Maar hoe is de situatie feitelijk? En hoe beleven de medewerkers het comfort in kantoorgebouwen? Verrassend genoeg is daarover nog weinig bekend, met name op het snijvlak van de reële en gepercipieerde situaties. Het onderhavige onderzoek ‘Comfort Professionele Kantoorgebouwen’, een samenwerking tussen de Hanzehogeschool Groningen en De Haagse Hogeschool, probeert in die leemte te voorzien. Het doel van het onderzoek is om verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen reële en gepercipieerde situaties in kantoren inzichtelijk te maken. Met de resultaten kunnen deelnemende organisaties bijsturen op geïdentificeerde knelpunten. In brede zin beogen de Hanzehogeschool Groningen en De Haagse Hogeschool met dit onderzoek inzicht te krijgen in de kwaliteit van het comfort in kantoorgebouwen. Daarnaast wil men inzicht krijgen in de maatregelen die het binnenmilieu kunnen verbeteren. Tot slot willen de onderzoekers het bewustzijn van studenten Facility Management op het gebied van het binnenklimaat vergroten door deze intensief te betrekken bij het uitvoeren van het onderzoek. Het onderzoek is voor deze studenten dus een belangrijke leerervaring. Daarmee beoogt het Lectoraat een nieuwe generatie beslissers te inspireren, niet alleen om het inzicht in het functioneren van organisaties te vergroten, maar ook om de prestaties te verbeteren

Abstract

Objective: To describe dietary carbohydrate intakes and their food sources among 27 centres in 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Methods: Between 1995 and 2000, 36 034 subjects, aged between 35-74 years, were administered a standardized, 24-h dietary recall using a computerized interview software programme (EPIC-SOFT). Intakes (g/day) of total carbohydrate, sugars, starch and fibre were estimated using the standardized EPIC Nutrient Database (ENDB). Mean intakes were adjusted for age, total energy intake, height and weight, and were weighted by season and day of recall. Results: Adjusted mean total carbohydrate intakes were highest in Italy and in the UK health-conscious cohort, and were lowest in Spain, Greece and France. Total fibre intakes were highest in the UK health-conscious cohort and lowest in Sweden and the UK general population. Bread contributed the highest proportion of carbohydrates (mainly starches) in every centre. Fruit consumption contributed a greater proportion of total carbohydrates (mainly sugars) among women than among men, and in southern centres compared with northern centres. Bread, fruits and vegetables represented the largest sources of fibre, but food sources varied considerably between centres. In stratified analyses, carbohydrate intakes tended to be higher among subjects who were physically active, never-smokers or non-drinkers of alcohol. Conclusions: Dietary carbohydrate intakes and in particular their food sources varied considerably between these 10 European countries. Intakes also varied according to gender and lifestyle factors. These data will form the basis for future aetiological analyses of the role of dietary carbohydrates in influencing health and disease.
