Background The BOLERO-2 trial reported efficacy and safety of Everolimus (EVE) and Exemestane (EXE) combination in HR+ advanced breast cancer (ABC) patients. The BALLET trial further evaluated the safety of EVE-EXE in HR+ ABC patients, without reporting efficacy data. Aim of the EVA real-life study was to collect data of efficacy and safety of EVE-EXE combination in the clinical setting, as well as exploring efficacy according to EVE Dose-Intensity (DI) and to previous treatment with Fulvestrant. Patients and methods This study aimed to describe the outcome of ABC pts treated with EVE-EXE combination in terms of median duration of EVE treatment and ORR in a real-life setting. Results From July 2013 to December 2015, the EVA study enrolled 404 pts. Median age was 61 years (33–83). Main metastatic sites were: bone (69.1%), soft tissue (34.7%) and viscera (33.2%). Median number of previous treatments was 2 (1–7). 43.3% of the pts had received Fulvestrant. Median exposure to EVE was 31.0 weeks (15.4–58.3) in the whole population. No difference was observed in terms of EVE exposure duration according to DI (p for trend = 0.27) or type of previous treatments (p = 0.33). ORR and Disease Control Rate (DCR) were observed in 31.6% and 60.7% of the patients, respectively, with the lowest ORRs confined in CHT pre-treated patients or in those who received the lowest DI of EVE. Grade 3-4 adverse events (AEs) were reported in 37.9% of the patients. Main AEs were: stomatitis (11.2%), non-infectious pneumonitis - NIP (3.8%), anaemia (3.8%) and fatigue (3.2%). Conclusions The EVA study provided new insights in the use of EVE-EVE combination in HR+ ABC pts many years after the publication of the pivotal trial. The combination is safe and the best response could be obtained in patients receiving the full dose of EVE and/or after hormone-therapy as Fulvestrant in ABC.

Purpose: Agents targeting HR-positive, HER2-negative locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer have improved patient outcomes compared with conventional single-agent endocrine therapy. Currently, approved targeted agents include everolimus and three CDK4/6 inhibitors, palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib. Unlike the well-characterized and easily manageable safety profile of endocrine therapies, adverse events associated with targeted therapies are complex and potentially severe. Their prompt recognition and treatment, crucial for prolonged endocrine sensitivity and survival, may be challenging and requires a multidisciplinary effort and a good knowledge of drug interactions. Methods: We reviewed the current evidence on the drug safety of targeted agents for metastatic breast cancer currently used in clinical practice in Italy, supported by the clinical experience of Italian oncologists with expertise in the field. Results: All oncologists had used CDK4/6 inhibitors in clinical practice and/or within a clinical trial. The clinical management of toxicities, including dose adjustments, treatment interruptions, and concerns regarding special populations is discussed, and the management of relevant adverse events, related to individual agents and class-specific, toxicities is reviewed. Hematologic toxicities have the greatest impact on clinical management of the disease and on patients. Although toxicities associated with the new treatments result in more visits to the physician and more time and attention with patients, they are manageable, with no need for the oncologist to consult with specialist physicians. Conclusions: Based on the available evidence and current guidelines, we propose a series of practical recommendations for multidisciplinary clinical management of the various toxicities associated with the addition of targeted agents to endocrine therapy.

- Abstract
This paper proposes the application of an innovative technique of clustering and projection—the Self-Organizing Map—in order to identify multidimensional patterns of deprivation in contemporary Switzerland. Starting from a rich set of non-monetary indicators from the Swiss Household Panel, a topological map has been extrapolated. This map is composed of 32 micro-clusters that are subsequently grouped into four macro-clusters, each of which expresses a specific profile. The analysis carried out indicates that about one out of two individuals living in Switzerland enjoy a state of multidimensional well-being, one in three shows signs of slight vulnerability, one in five is in a condition of consistent vulnerability and one in twenty is deprived. After having outlined the space of multidimensional patterns, the movements of these individuals have been reconstructed from 1999 to 2012 and the role of “true path dependence’ have been measured

Objectives Few studies have analyzed factors associated with delirium subtypes. In this study, we investigate factors associated with subtypes of delirium only in patients with dementia to provide insights on the possible prevention and treatments. Design This is a cross-sectional study nested in the "Delirium Day" study, a nationwide Italian point-prevalence study. Setting and participants Older patients admitted to 205 acute and 92 rehabilitation hospital wards. Measures Delirium was evaluated with the 4-AT and the motor subtypes with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Dementia was defined by the presence of a documented diagnosis in the medical records and/or prescription of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or memantine prior to admission. Results Of the 1057 patients with dementia, 35% had delirium, with 25.6% hyperactive, 33.1% hypoactive, 34.5% mixed, and 6.7% nonmotor subtype. There were higher odds of having venous catheters in the hypoactive (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.18-2.81) and mixed type of delirium (OR 2.23, CI 1.43-3.46), whereas higher odds of urinary catheters in the hypoactive (OR 2.91, CI 1.92-4.39), hyperactive (OR 1.99, CI 1.23-3.21), and mixed types of delirium (OR 2.05, CI 1.36-3.07). We found higher odds of antipsychotics both in the hyperactive (OR 2.87, CI 1.81-4.54) and mixed subtype (OR 1.84, CI 1.24-2.75), whereas higher odds of antibiotics was present only in the mixed subtype (OR 1.91, CI 1.26-2.87). Conclusions and implications In patients with dementia, the mixed delirium subtype is the most prevalent followed by the hypoactive, hyperactive, and nonmotor subtype. Motor subtypes of delirium may be triggered by clinical factors, including the use of venous and urinary catheters, and the use of antipsychotics. Future studies are necessary to provide further insights on the possible pathophysiology of delirium in patients with dementia and to address the optimization of the management of potential risk factors.

- Abstract

Stranded cetaceans offer a unique opportunity for collecting data on the health status of dolphins and whale free-living populations. We report the post-mortem findings observed in18 odontocetes found stranded between 2000 and 2005 on the Italian coastline. Pneumonia was one of the most encountered lesion. additional findings were nephritis, epatitis and Pholeter gastrophilus-associasted gastritis. In a few cases, putative zoonotic agents, such as Vibrio alginolyticus, were isolated from these stranded dolphins.

- Abstract
We have investigated the phenomenon of deprivation in contemporary Switzerland through the adoption of a multidimensional, dynamic approach. By applying Self Organizing Maps (SOM) to a set of 33 non-monetary indicators from the 2009 wave of the Swiss Household Panel (SHP), we identified 13 prototypical forms (or clusters) of well-being, financial vulnerability, psycho-physiological fragility and deprivation within a topological dimensional space. Then new data from the previous waves (2003 to 2008) were classified by the SOM model, making it possible to estimate the weight of the different clusters in time and reconstruct the dynamics of stability and mobility of individuals within the map. Looking at the transition probabilities between year t and year t+1, we observed that the paths of mobility which catalyze the largest number of observations are those connecting clusters that are adjacent on the topological space. © Sociological Research Online.

Ninety-five patients with previously untreated, advanced or unfavorably presenting Hodgkin's disease were recruited in ten centers. Twenty-five patients with stage II-A-bulky disease received four courses of EBVD (epirubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) plus involved field radiotherapy (Group 1); 24 patients in stage I-B, II-B and III-A received 6 courses of EBVD (11 of them also received radiotherapy on bulky localizations (Group 2); 46 patients in stage III-ASor = 3 nodes, III-B and IV received MOPP/EBVD 4 + 4 courses (Group 3).Eighty patients (84%) achieved CR, eight patients (8%) a PR, five patients did not respond and two progressed during therapy. CRs were achieved by 23/25 patients (92%) in Group 1, 21/24 (87%) in Group 2 and 36/46 (78%) in Group 3. The mean duration of follow-up was 33.3 months (range 5-69). There were three deaths from directly treatment-related causes. Twelve patients suffered chronic toxicity, including six who suffered lung toxicity and two who developed secondary myelodysplasia. The results achieved in this co-operative study are similar to those reported by most single-Institution trials and those with adriamycin-containing regimens. Long-term toxicity deserves careful consideration.

The purpose of our cooperative trial was to investigate whether epirubicin (EPI) at 90 mg/m2 in a CHOP-like combination (called CEOP) could increase complete response (CR) and survival rates in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients while maintaining a tolerable degree of toxicity.Between September 1986 and July 1992, 218 patients from 12 Centers in Lombardy entered this study. The inclusion criteria were: a histological diagnosis of intermediate or diffuse large cell (DLC) NHL and no previous radio-chemotherapy. The patients in stages IA and IIA (both intermediate and DLC) received four CEOP courses followed by local/regional radiotherapy; those with intermediate NHL in stages IB, IIB, III A and B and IV A and B received six CEOP courses and, if they achieved CR, three further courses as consolidation.Among the 160 evaluable patients, CR was observed in 90% of the subjects with DLC-NHL (stages IA and IIA) and in 59% of those with intermediate-grade NHL (all clinical stages). If the clinical stages are considered separately, the CR rates were 92% for stages IA, IIA and 53% for stages IB, IIB, III A and B, IV A and B. Relapses occurred in 20% of the patients treated with four CEOP courses plus radiotherapy and in 31% of those who received nine CEOP courses because of the advanced stage of their disease. As of May 1994, the median follow-up was 42 months. If all of the patients are considered together, the 7-year overall survival (OS) probability was 64% and the 7-year disease-free survival (DFS) probability 67%. In comparison with stages III/IV, the patients in stages I-II had better DFS (7-year chance 77% vs 56%, p0.03). Hematological toxicity was acceptable, and a delay in the administration of CEOP chemotherapy was required in only three patients. No life-threatening infections were recorded. Our cooperative study of the use of the CEOP combination in NHL patients shows that response rates and the length of DFS are equal to the best results obtained with CHOP and more intensive programs, although further confirmation must be provided by means of a longer follow-up and a more careful analysis of prognostic factors according to the recently proposed international index. In our experience, an EPI dose of 90 mg/m2 has negligible toxicity (particularly on bone marrow), even in elderly patients. These findings are interesting since it is well known that myelotoxicity is the principal limiting factor for the majority of anthracycline-containing regimens used in the treatment of potentially curable NHL.

After having outlined the space of multidimensional patterns, the movements of these individuals have been reconstructed from 1999 to 2012 and the role of “true path dependence’ have been measured.

- Abstract
This study aimed to determine if dietary modifications using a nutritional regimen could prevent or reduce the incidence of cancer therapy-induced diarrhea in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and to evaluate the relationship of Vitamin D blood levels with diarrhea severity. Patients with metastatic colorectal cancer were enrolled. A Mediterranean diet, containing some special limitations aiming to reduce the risk of diarrhea, was administered before and during the entire chemotherapy program. Enrolled patients numbering 60/137 (44%) had diarrhea during chemotherapy. Adherence to the diet was high in 36 (26.3%) patients, medium in 94 (68.6%), and low in 7 (5.1%). Mean adherence to the diet was significantly lower in patients who experienced diarrhea with maximum grade 2−3 compared to those who had no diarrhea or grade 1 diarrhea (score = 5.4 ± 1.9 vs. 7.1 ± 1.5, p < 0.001). Patients with higher adherence to the diet had a lower risk of grade 2−3 diarrhea (odds ratio: 0.5 (95% CI: 0.3−0.7, p < 0.001)). In addition, patients who completed a higher number of chemotherapy cycles had an increased risk of grade 2−3 diarrhea (odds ratio: 1.2 (95% CI: 1.0−1.5, p = 0.02)). Of note, a lower level of Vitamin D correlated with an increased risk of G2-G3 diarrhea (p = 0.03). A diet based on vegetables with a controlled fiber content, Mediterranean Modified Healthy Diet (MMHD), is useful to control the incidence of cancer therapy-induced diarrhea.

- Abstract
Nutrition and metabolism are altered in patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, which is related to excessive production of gastrointestinal hormones, peptides, and amines that can cause maldigestion, diarrhea, steatorrhea, and altered gastrointestinal motility. Patients with carcinoid syndrome are at risk of malnutrition due to tryptophan depletion, reduced intake of food, and loss of appetite because of diarrhea and/or flushing. To date, there is limited information on the nutritional issues faced by patients with neuroendocrine tumors, and on what specific recommendations should be made to patients concerning nutrition at various stages of the disease process. Dietary planning should therefore be an integral part of multidisciplinary management for patients with neuroendocrine tumors. Herein, we review current guidance for nutrition in patients with neuroendocrine tumors, focusing on intake of amines and foods to avoid, as well as concurrent medications. We also propose a new and practical food pyramid based on the principles of Mediterranean diet 4.0 that can be easily adapted according to the unmet needs of patients with neuroendocrine tumors at all stages of disease. The overarching goal of the present review is to create greater awareness of nutritional care and considerations that should be given to patients with neuroendocrine tumors.

- Abstract
Mutations in the X-linked CDKL5 gene cause CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD), a severe neurodevelopmental condition mainly characterized by infantile epileptic encephalopathy, intellectual disability, and autistic features. The molecular mechanisms underlying the clinical symptoms remain largely unknown and the identification of reliable biomarkers in animal models will certainly contribute to increase our comprehension of CDD as well as to assess the efficacy of therapeutic strategies. Here, we used different Magnetic Resonance (MR) methods to disclose structural, functional, or metabolic signatures of Cdkl5 deficiency in the brain of adult mice. We found that loss of Cdkl5 does not cause cerebral atrophy but affects distinct brain areas, particularly the hippocampus. By in vivo proton-MR spectroscopy (MRS), we revealed in the Cdkl5 null brain a metabolic dysregulation indicative of mitochondrial dysfunctions. Accordingly, we unveiled a significant reduction in ATP levels and a decrease in the expression of complex IV of mitochondrial electron transport chain. Conversely, the number of mitochondria appeared preserved. Importantly, we reported a significant defect in the activation of one of the major regulators of cellular energy balance, the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), that might contribute to the observed metabolic impairment and become an interesting therapeutic target for future preclinical trials. In conclusion, MRS revealed in the Cdkl5 null brain the presence of a metabolic dysregulation suggestive of a mitochondrial dysfunction that permitted to foster our comprehension of Cdkl5 deficiency and brought our interest towards targeting mitochondria as therapeutic strategy for CDD., (© 2021 International Society for Neurochemistry.)

- Abstract
Few studies exist of the bowhead whale brain and virtually nothing is known about its cortical cytoarchitecture or how it compares to other cetaceans. Bowhead whales are one of the least encephalized cetaceans and occupy a basal phylogenetic position among mysticetes. Therefore, the bowhead whale is an important specimen for understanding the evolutionary specializations of cetacean brains. Here, we present an overview of the structure and cytoarchitecture of the bowhead whale cerebral cortex gleaned from Nissl-stained sections and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in comparison with other mysticetes and odontocetes. In general, the cytoarchitecture of cetacean cortex is consistent in displaying a thin cortex, a thick, prominent layer I, and absence of a granular layer IV. Cell density, composition, and width of layers III, V, and VI vary among cortical regions, and cetacean cortex is cell-sparse relative to that of terrestrial mammals. Notably, all regions of the bowhead cortex possess high numbers of von Economo neurons and fork neurons, with the highest numbers observed at the apex of gyri. The bowhead whale is also distinctive in having a significantly reduced hippocampus that occupies a space below the corpus callosum within the lateral ventricle. Consistent with other balaenids, bowhead whales possess what appears to be a blunted temporal lobe, which is in contrast to the expansive temporal lobes that characterize most odontocetes. The present report demonstrates that many morphological and cytoarchitectural characteristics are conserved among cetaceans, while other features, such as a reduced temporal lobe, may characterize balaenids among mysticetes. - Abstract
The present study documents the morphology of neurons in several regions of the neocortex from the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the North Atlantic minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), and the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). Golgi-stained neurons (n = 210) were analyzed in the frontal and temporal neocortex as well as in the primary visual and primary motor areas. Qualitatively, all three species exhibited a diversity of neuronal morphologies, with spiny neurons including typical pyramidal types, similar to those observed in primates and rodents, as well as other spiny neuron types that had more variable morphology and/or orientation. Five neuron types, with a vertical apical dendrite, approximated the general pyramidal neuron morphology (i.e., typical pyramidal, extraverted, magnopyramidal, multiapical, and bitufted neurons), with a predominance of typical and extraverted pyramidal neurons. In what may represent a cetacean morphological apomorphy, both typical pyramidal and magnopyramidal neurons frequently exhibited a tri-tufted variant. In the humpback whale, there were also large, star-like neurons with no discernable apical dendrite. Aspiny bipolar and multipolar interneurons were morphologically consistent with those reported previously in other mammals. Quantitative analyses showed that neuronal size and dendritic extent increased in association with body size and brain mass (bottlenose dolphin < minke whale < humpback whale). The present data thus suggest that certain spiny neuron morphologies may be apomorphies in the neocortex of cetaceans as compared to other mammals and that neuronal dendritic extent covaries with brain and body size.

- Abstract
The present quantitative study extends our investigation of cetartiodactyls by exploring the neuronal morphology in the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) neocortex. Here, we investigate giraffe primary visual and motor cortices from perfusion-fixed brains of three subadults stained with a modified rapid Golgi technique. Neurons (n = 244) were quantified on a computer-assisted microscopy system. Qualitatively, the giraffe neocortex contained an array of complex spiny neurons that included both "typical" pyramidal neuron morphology and "atypical" spiny neurons in terms of morphology and/or orientation. In general, the neocortex exhibited a vertical columnar organization of apical dendrites. Although there was no significant quantitative difference in dendritic complexity for pyramidal neurons between primary visual (n = 78) and motor cortices (n = 65), there was a significant difference in dendritic spine density (motor cortex > visual cortex). The morphology of aspiny neurons in giraffes appeared to be similar to that of other eutherian mammals. For cross-species comparison of neuron morphology, giraffe pyramidal neurons were compared to those quantified with the same methodology in African elephants and some cetaceans (e.g., bottlenose dolphin, minke whale, humpback whale). Across species, the giraffe (and cetaceans) exhibited less widely bifurcating apical dendrites compared to elephants. Quantitative dendritic measures revealed that the elephant and humpback whale had more extensive dendrites than giraffes, whereas the minke whale and bottlenose dolphin had less extensive dendritic arbors. Spine measures were highest in the giraffe, perhaps due to the high quality, perfusion fixation. The neuronal morphology in giraffe neocortex is thus generally consistent with what is known about other cetartiodactyls.

- Abstract
Von Economo neurons (VENs) are specialized projection neurons with a characteristic spindle-shaped soma and thick basal and apical dendrites. VENs have been described in restricted cortical regions, with their most frequent appearance in layers III and V of the anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula, and frontopolar cortex of humans, great apes, macaque monkeys, elephants, and some cetaceans. Recently, a ubiquitous distribution of VENs was reported in various cortical areas in the pygmy hippopotamus, one of the closest living relatives of cetaceans. That finding suggested that VENs might not be unique to only a few species that possess enlarged brains. In the present analysis, we assessed the phylogenetic distribution of VENs within species representative of the superordinal clade that includes cetartiodactyls and perissodactyls, as well as afrotherians. In addition, the distribution of fork cells that are often found in close proximity to VENs was also assessed. Nissl-stained sections from the frontal pole, anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula, and occipital pole of bowhead whale, cow, sheep, deer, horse, pig, rock hyrax, and human were examined using stereologic methods to quantify VENs and fork cells within layer V of all four cortical regions. VENs and fork cells were found in each of the species examined here with species-specific differences in distributions and densities. The present results demonstrated that VENs and fork cells were not restricted to highly encephalized or socially complex species, and their repeated emergence among distantly related species seems to represent convergent evolution of specialized pyramidal neurons. The widespread phylogenetic presence of VENs and fork cells indicates that these neuron morphologies readily emerged in response to selective forces, whose variety and nature are yet to be identified.

- Abstract
How many cerebellar granule cells are generated pre- or postnatally in human is unknown. Using a rigorous design-based stereologic approach we investigated postmortem cerebella from 14 children who died between the first postnatal day (P1) and 11 months of age (M11). We found a statistically significant (p < 0.05) age-related increase in the total number of granule cells from 5.9 × 10(9) at M1 to 37.6 × 10(9) at M10/11 per cerebellar half but not in the total number of Purkinje cells (12.1 × 10(6) at M1 vs. 13.9 × 10(6) at M10/11 per cerebellar half). Accordingly, approximately 85 % of the cerebellar granule cells are generated postnatally in human, and the number of granule cells per Purkinje cell in the human cerebellum increases from 485 at M1 to 2,700 at M10/11, approximately. These data indicate that the human cerebellum has a much higher functional plasticity during the first year of life than previously thought, and may respond very sensitively to internal and external influences during this time. This has important implications for several neuropsychiatric conditions in which cerebellar involvement has been demonstrated.

- Abstract
Although the basic morphological characteristics of neurons in the cerebellar cortex have been documented in several species, virtually nothing is known about the quantitative morphological characteristics of these neurons across different taxa. To that end, the present study investigated cerebellar neuronal morphology among eight different, large-brained mammalian species comprising a broad phylogenetic range: afrotherians (African elephant, Florida manatee), carnivores (Siberian tiger, clouded leopard), cetartiodactyls (humpback whale, giraffe) and primates (human, common chimpanzee). Specifically, several neuron types (e.g., stellate, basket, Lugaro, Golgi, and granule neurons; N = 317) of the cerebellar cortex were stained with a modified rapid Golgi technique and quantified on a computer-assisted microscopy system. There was a 64-fold variation in brain mass across species in our sample (from clouded leopard to the elephant) and a 103-fold variation in cerebellar volume. Most dendritic measures tended to increase with cerebellar volume. The cerebellar cortex in these species exhibited the trilaminate pattern common to all mammals. Morphologically, neuron types in the cerebellar cortex were generally consistent with those described in primates (Fox et al., 1967) and rodents (Palay and Chan-Palay, 1974), although there was substantial quantitative variation across species. In particular, Lugaro neurons in the elephant appeared to be disproportionately larger than those in other species. To explore potential quantitative differences in dendritic measures across species, MARSplines analyses were used to evaluate whether species could be differentiated from each other based on dendritic characteristics alone. Results of these analyses indicated that there were significant differences among all species in dendritic measures.

- Abstract
The structure of the hippopotamus brain is virtually unknown because few studies have examined more than its external morphology. In view of their semiaquatic lifestyle and phylogenetic relatedness to cetaceans, the brain of hippopotamuses represents a unique opportunity for better understanding the selective pressures that have shaped the organization of the brain during the evolutionary process of adaptation to an aquatic environment. Here we examined the histology of the cerebral cortex of the pygmy hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis) by means of Nissl, Golgi, and calretinin (CR) immunostaining, and provide a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) structural and volumetric dataset of the anatomy of its brain. We calculated the corpus callosum area/brain mass ratio (CCA/BM), the gyrencephalic index (GI), the cerebellar quotient (CQ), and the cerebellar index (CI). Results indicate that the cortex of H. liberiensis shares one feature exclusively with cetaceans (the lack of layer IV across the entire cerebral cortex), other features exclusively with artiodactyls (e.g., the morphologiy of CR-immunoreactive multipolar neurons in deep cortical layers, gyrencephalic index values, hippocampus and cerebellum volumetrics), and others with at least some species of cetartiodactyls (e.g., the presence of a thick layer I, the pattern of distribution of CR-immunoreactive neurons, the presence of von Economo neurons, clustering of layer II in the occipital cortex). The present study thus provides a comprehensive dataset of the neuroanatomy of H. liberiensis that sets the ground for future comparative studies including the larger Hippopotamus amphibius., (Copyright © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

- Abstract
Despite much research during recent decades, the etiology and pathogenesis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remain unknown. Because of the role of the cerebellum in respiratory and cardiovascular control, it has been proposed that it plays an important role in the pathogenesis of SIDS. To date, 5 postmortem studies on the cerebellum of SIDS cases have yielded conflicting results. Using a rigorous design-based stereologic approach, we investigated postmortem cerebella from 9 SIDS patients who died between 2 and 10 months of age and from 9 age- and sex-matched control children. Neither the volumes of the cerebellar external granule cell layer, molecular layer, internal granule cell layer (including the Purkinje cell layer), and white matter nor the total numbers of Purkinje cells, granule cells in the internal granule cell layer, and the number of granule cells per Purkinje cell showed statistically significant differences between the SIDS cases and the controls. Based on these observations, we conclude that structural alterations in cerebellar development are not involved in the etiology and pathogenesis of SIDS.
