Climate change is expected to outpace the rate at which populations of forest trees can migrate. Hence, in forestry there is growing interest in intervention strategies such as assisted migration to mitigate climate change impacts. However, until now the primary focus when evaluating candidates for assisted migration has been mean or maximum performance. We explore phenotypic plasticity as a potentially new avenue to help maintain the viability of species and populations in the face of climate change. Capitalizing on large, multi-site international provenance trials of four economically and ecologically important forest tree species (Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies, Picea engelmannii, Pinus contorta), we quantify growth stability as the width of the response function relating provenance growth performance and trial site climate. We found significant differences in growth stability among species, with P. engelmannii being considerably more stable than the other three species. Additionally, we found no relationship between growth performance and growth stability of provenances, indicating that there are fast-growing provenances with a broad climate optimum. In two of the four species, provenances' growth stability showed a significant relationship with the climate of the seed source, the direction of which depends on the species. When taken together with data on growth performance in different climate conditions, a measure of growth stability can improve the choice of species and provenances to minimize future risks in forest restoration and reforestation. Summary: The hydraulic limitation hypothesis postulates an increase in resistance to water conductivity as trees become taller. Accordingly, we expect that the hydraulic architecture of trees shares a close relationship with the crown architecture and that anatomical traits can directly or indirectly influence hydraulic conductivity. The aim of this work was to investigate the variations in vessels, hydraulic properties and wood density of three native Brazilian tree species. We selected 40-year-old Balfourodendron riedelianum , Cariniana legalis and Handroanthus vellosoi trees and measured maximum vessel length, specific hydraulic conductivity, the percentage loss of conductivity, leaf hydraulic conductivity, and density of branches at three different positions of the crown. Variability in anatomical and hydraulic properties was mostly explained by differences between species, while small differences were related to the position of the branch along the crown-position gradient. Within the measured variables, only the maximum vessel length differed between one crown position and the other. We posit that poor differences between anatomical and hydraulic positions in the crown-position gradient could be related to sample positions within the crown, which were relatively close to each other, with branches having similar ages and diameters. Our findings demonstrate that despite growing in the same environment and having the same age, our species deploy contrasting carbon allocation and hydraulic species-specific strategies. Auxin is involved in various developmental processes of plants, including cell division in cambium and xylem differentiation. However, most studies linking auxin and xylem cell production are performed in environments with a strong seasonality (i.e. temperate and boreal climates). The temporal dynamics of auxin and cambial activity of subtropical trees remain basically unknown. In this study, we sampled four microcores weekly in three individuals of Chinese red pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) from February to December 2015–16 to compare xylem formation with auxin concentration in subtropical China. During the entire period of sampling, the number of cambial cells varied from 2 to 7, while the number of cells in the enlarging zone ranged from 1 to 4 and from 1 to 5 in the wall-thickening zone. In 2015, the average auxin concentration was 3.46 ng g−1, with 33 xylem cells being produced at the end of the year. In 2016, a lower auxin concentration (2.59 ng g−1) corresponded to a reduced annual xylem production (13.7 cells). No significant relationship between auxin concentration and number of xylem cells in differentiation was found at the weekly scale. Unlike in boreal and temperate forests, the lack of wood formation seasonality in subtropical forests makes it more difficult to reveal the relationship between auxin concentration and number of xylem cells in differentiation at the intra-annual scale. The frequent and repeated samplings might have reduced auxin concentration in the developing cambium and xylem, resulting in a lower xylem cell production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
