The electronic structure and the band gap behavior of CH$_3$NH$_3$Pb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ for $x$=0.25, 0.33, 0.50, 0.67, 0.75, 1.00 were studied using the full-relativistic density-functional-theory calculations. A combination of the parameter-free Armiento-K\"{u}mmel generalized gradient approximation exchange functional with the nonseparable gradient approximation Minnesota correlation functional was employed. The calculated band gap sizes for the CH$_3$NH$_3$Pb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ series were found to be similar to the experimentally measured values. While the change of the optimized lattice parameter with an increasing Br content can be described by a linear fit, the calculated band gap variation exhibits rather a quadratic-like behavior over the $x$ region of the cubic crystal structure. While the experimental reports are divided on whether the bowing parameter value is being very small or significant, our calculated results support the latter case.

The employment of the parameter-free Armiento-K\"{u}mmel generalized gradient approximation (AK13-GGA) exchange functional was examined as means of the band gap prediction for hybrid metal halide perovskites (HaPs) or systems with strong spin-orbit coupling in the full-relativistic density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations. The new combination of AK13 with the nonseparable gradient approximation Minnesota correlation functional (GAM) was established as an approach allowing for the efficient band gap estimation with accuracy similar to the GW approximation method but at the computational costs of conventional DFT. This was further supported by results of the AK13/GAM calculations performed for various HaPs. The described approach creates an opportunity for the effective assessment of the electronic structure of large, complex, doped or defective HaPs and modelling of new materials.

The Am $5d$-$5f$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) data of americium sesquioxide were measured at incident photon energies throughout the Am $O_{4,5}$ edges. The experiment was supported by calculations using several model approaches. While the experimental Am $O_{4,5}$ x-ray absorption spectrum of Am$_2$O$_3$ is compared with the spectra calculated in the framework of atomic multiplet and crystal-field multiplet theories and Anderson impurity model (AIM) for the Am(III) system, the recorded Am $5d$-$5f$ RIXS data are essentially reproduced by the crystal-field multiplet calculations. A combination of the experimental scattering geometry and theoretical analysis of the character of the electronic states probed during the RIXS process confirms that the ground state of Am$_2$O$_3$ is singlet $\Gamma_1$. An appearance of the low-intense charge-transfer satellite in the Am $5d$-$5f$ RIXS spectra at an energy loss of $\sim$5.5 eV, suggests weak Am $5f$-O $2p$ hybridization which is in agreement with AIM estimations of the $5f$ occupancy from spectroscopic data in Am$_2$O$_3$ as being 6.05 electrons.

Point defect tolerance in materials, which extends operational lifetime, is essential for societal sustainability, and the creation of a framework to design such properties is a grand challenge in the material sciences. Using three prototypical lead bromide perovskites in single crystal form and high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy, we reveal the unexpectedly pivotal role of the A-cation in mediating the influence of photoinduced defects. Organic A-cation hydrogen bonding facilitates chemical flexing of the lead-bromide bond that mitigates the self-doping effect of bromide vacancies. The contribution of partially ionic lead-bromide bonding to the electronic band edges, where the bonding becomes more ionic upon the formation of defects, mitigates re-hybridization of the electronic structure upon degradation. These findings reveal two new general design principles for defect tolerance in materials. Our findings uncover the foundations of defect tolerance in halide perovskites and have implications for defect calculations, all beam-based measurements of photophysical properties and perovskite solar cell technology.

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study on CrI3 single crystals by employing the polarization dependence of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Our investigations reveal multiple Cr 3d orbital splitting (dd excitations) as well as magnetic dichroism (MD) in the RIXS spectra which is evidence of spin-flip in the dd excitation. Interestingly, the dd excitation energies are similar on both sides of the ferromagnetic transition temperature, TC of 61 K, although MD in RIXS is predominant at 0.4 tesla magnetic field below TC. This demonstrates that the ferromagnetic superexchange interaction that is responsible for the intra-atomic exchange field, is vanishingly small compared to local exchange field that comes from exchange and correlation interaction among the interacting Cr 3d orbitals. The investigation presented here demonstrate that the electronic structure of bulk CrI3 is complex in the sense that dynamical electron correlations are significant. The recorded RIXS spectra reported here reveal clearly resolved Cr 3d intra-orbital dd excitations that represent transitions between electronic levels that are heavily influenced by multi-configuration effects. Our calculations employing the crystal field TTmultiplet theory taking into account the Cr 3d hybridization with the ligand valence states and the full multiplet structure due to intra-atomic and crystal field interactions in Oh and D3d symmetry, clearly reproduced the dichroic trend in experimental RIXS spectra., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Hot carrier solar cells hold promise for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit. Slow hot carrier cooling is one of the most intriguing properties of lead halide perovskites and distinguishes this class of materials from competing materials used in solar cells. Here we use the element selectivity of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy to uncover a previously hidden feature in the conduction band states, the {\sigma}-{\pi} energy separation, and find that it is strongly influenced by the strength of electronic coupling between the A-cation and bromide-lead sublattice. Our finding provides an alternative mechanism to the commonly discussed polaronic screening and hot phonon bottleneck carrier cooling mechanisms. Our work emphasizes the optoelectronic role of the A-cation, provides a comprehensive view of A-cation effects in the electronic and crystal structures, and outlines a broadly applicable spectroscopic approach for assessing the impact of chemical alterations of the A-cation on halide and potentially non-halide perovskite electronic structure., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Highly crystalline UO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes of 2-3 nm were produced by fast chemical deposition of uranium(IV) under reducing conditions at pH 8-11. The particles were then characterized by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the U M4 edge and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy at the U L3 edge. The results of this investigation show that despite U(IV) being the dominant oxidation state of the freshly prepared UO2 NPs, they oxidize to U4O9 with time and under the X-ray beam, indicating the high reactivity of U(IV) under these conditions. Moreover, it was found that the oxidation process of NPs is accompanied by their growth in size to 6 nm. We highlight here the major differences and similarities of the UO2 NPs properties with PuO2, ThO2 and CeO2 NPs.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been intensively re-investigated due to their applications, yet the opto-electronic function of the organic cation remains unclear. Through organic-selective resonant Auger electron spectroscopy measurements on well-defined single crystal surfaces, we find evidence for electronic coupling in the unoccupied states between the organic and inorganic sub-lattices of the prototypical hybrid perovskite, which is contrary to the notion based on previous studies that the organic cation is electronically inert. A general strategy for the determination of Tc oxidation state by new approach involving X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Tc L3 edge is shown. A comprehensive series of 99Tc compounds, ranging from oxidation states I to VII, was measured and subsequently simulated within the framework of crystal-field multiplet theory. The observable trends in the absorption edge energy shift in combination with the spectral shape allow for a deeper understanding of complicated Tc coordination chemistry. Valence band electronic structure of mixed uranium oxides (UO2, U4O9, U3O7, U3O8, UO3) has been studied by the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) technique at the U M5 edge and by computational methods. Developing characterization techniques and analysis methods adapted to the investigation of nanoparticles (NPs) is of fundamental importance considering the role of these materials in many fields of research. The study of actinide based NPs, despite their environmental relevance, is still underdeveloped compared to that of NPs based on stable and lighter elements. We present here an investigation of ThO2 NPs performed with High-Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detected (HERFD) X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) and with ab initio XANES simulations. The first post-edge feature of Th L3 edge HERFD XANES disappears in small NPs and simulations considering non-relaxed structural models reproduce the trends observed in experimental data. Inspection of the simulations from Th atoms in the core and on the surface of the NP indeed demonstrates that the the first post-edge feature is very sensitive to the lowering of the number of coordinating atoms and therefore to the more exposed Th atoms at the surface of the NP. The sensitivity of the L3 edge HERFD XANES to low coordinated atoms at the surface stems from the hybridization of the d-Density of States (DOS) of Th with both O and Th neighboring atoms. This may be a common feature to other oxide systems that can be exploited to investigate surface interactions.

Understanding the complex chemistry of functional nanomaterials is of fundamental importance. Controlled synthesis and characterization at the atomic level is essential to gain deeper insight into the unique chemical reactivity exhibited by many nanomaterials. Cerium oxide nanoparticles have many industrial and commercial applications,resulting from very strong catalytic, pro-and anti-oxidant activity. However, the identity of the active species and the chemical mechanisms imparted by nanoceria remain elusive, impeding the further development of new applications. Here, we explore the behavior of cerium oxide nanoparticles of different sizes at different temperatures and trace the electronic structure changes by state-of-the-art soft and hard X-ray experiments combined with computational methods. We confirm the absence of the Ce(III) oxidation state at the surface of CeO2nanoparticles, even for particles as small as 2 nm. Synchrotron X-ray absorption experiments at Ce L3and M5edges, combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and theoretical calculations demonstrate that in addition to the nanoceria charge stability, the formation of hydroxyl groups at the surface profoundly affects the chemical performance of these nanomaterials, Comment: T. The chemical properties of actinide materials are often predefined and described based on the data available for isostructural species. This is the case for potassium plutonyl (PuVI) carbonate, K4PuVIO2(CO3)3(cr), a complex relevant for nuclear technology and the environment, of which the crystallographic and thermodynamic properties of which are still lacking. We report here the synthesis and characterization of PuVI achieved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure at the Pu M4-edge coupled with electronic structure calculations. The crystallographic properties of PuVI are compared with isostructural uranium (U) and neptunium (Np) compounds. Actinyl (AnVI) axial bond lengths, [O-AnVI-O]2+, are correlated between solid, K4AnVIO2(CO3)3(cr), and aqueous, [AnVIO2(CO3)3]4-(aq) species for the UVI-NpVI-PuVI series. An application of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering technique for studying of optical scale excitations in electron-correlated materials is discussed. Examples are given including data obtained for 3d transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide systems. In some cases, the data are compared with the results of crystal-field multiplet and Anderson impurity model calculations. Advantages of this technigue are pointed out, such as an ability to probe an extended multiplet structure of the ground state configuration, which is not fully accessible by other spectroscopies, an extreme sensitivity of spectral profiles to the chemical state of the element in question and to the crystal-field strength, and a great potential in probing the ground state character (for example, ground state J-mixing in rare-earths) due to the technique's elemental selectivity and strict selection rules.
