Abstract

Hospital pharmacies have challenging inventory problems because of the volume of transactions, the large number of line items, the high stockout cost, and the limited shelf life. An approach to better management of hospital pharmacy inventories is presented utilizing local area networks and spreadsheet software in a distribution resource planning framework., Managers need constantly updated information throughout the day, and this can be provided using a local area network (LAN) computer system. The linkages provided through a LAN allow information, printing and electronic mail access. A hospital pharmacy using a LAN allows management access to spreadsheets to control the inventory system. Inputting data by hand is time-consuming, but this could be avoided by the introduction of a bar-code scanning system.

13. Buffet test in the National Transonic Facility

Abstract

A buffet test of a commercial transport model was accomplished in the National Transonic Facility at the NASA Langley Research Center. This aeroelastic test was unprecedented for this wind tunnel and posed a high risk to the facility. This paper presents the test results from a structural dynamics and aeroelastic response point of view and describes the activities required for the safety analysis and risk assessment. The test was conducted in the same manner as a flutter test and employed onboard dynamic instrumentation, real time dynamic data monitoring, automatic, and manual tunnel interlock systems for protecting the model. The procedures and test techniques employed for this test are expected to serve as the basis for future aeroelastic testing in the National Transonic Facility. This test program was a cooperative effort between the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company and the NASA Langley Research Center.

Abstract

The standard of care for first-line therapy in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (R-CHOP) regimen. For patients who fail to respond, have an incomplete response or relapse, numerous effective options exists besides salvage cisplatin-based regimen and autologous stem cell therapy. Even with this approach, the outcome remains very poor for this group of patients. The present case illustrates a 55-year-old woman diagnosed with DLBCL, who experienced an early incomplete response, later progression during treatment with the R-CHOP regimen. The patient received salvage therapy with rituximab, cisplatin and gemcitabine, again with an incomplete response. The patient declined consideration for stem cell therapy. Her disease progressed and she enrolled in the present phase I trial using azacitadine priming and nanoalbumin-bound (nab)-paclitaxel. After three cycles, follow-up positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed a complete response for the first time since her initial diagnosis and the patient has remained disease-free for >6 years. Azacitadine and nab-paclitaxel combination appeared to be an effective regimen for the treatment of this patient with refractory DLBCL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A 32-year-old black man had nonspecific abdominal complaints and was found to have obstructive jaundice, lymphadenopathy, and eosinophilia. Eosinophilic infiltration of the cystic duct, gallbladder, lymph nodes, and bone marrow was demonstrated. The patient's symptoms, lymphadenopathy, and eosinophilia resolved spontaneously, and there was no evidence of allergy, parasitic infestation, or hypereosinophilic syndrome. A comparison of this case to other diseases in which eosinophilia and eosinophilic infiltration of one or more gastrointestinal organs occurs is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Spatial statistics and analysis of earth's ionosphere

Abstract

The ionosphere, a layer of Earths upper atmosphere characterized by energetic charged particles, serves as a natural plasma laboratory and supplies proxy diagnostics of space weather drivers in the magnetosphere and the solar wind. The ionosphere is a highly dynamic medium, and the spatial structure of observed features (such as auroral light emissions, charge density, temperature, etc.) is rich with information when analyzed in the context of fluid, electromagnetic, and chemical models. Obtaining measurements with higher spatial and temporal resolution is clearly advantageous. For instance, measurements obtained with a new electronically-steerable incoherent scatter radar (ISR) present a unique space-time perspective compared to those of a dish-based ISR. However, there are unique ambiguities for this modality which must be carefully considered. The ISR target is stochastic, and the fidelity of fitted parameters (ionospheric densities and temperatures) requires integrated sampling, creating a tradeoff between measurement uncertainty and spatio-temporal resolution. Spatial statistics formalizes the relationship between spatially dispersed observations and the underlying process(es) they represent. A spatial process is regarded as a random field with its distribution structured (e.g., through a correlation function) such that data, sampled over a spatial domain, support inference or prediction of the process. Quantification of uncertainty, an important component of scientific data analysis, is a core value of spatial statistics. This research applies the formalism of spatial statistics to the analysis of Earth's ionosphere using remote sensing diagnostics. In the first part, we consider the problem of volumetric imaging using phased-array ISR based on optimal spatial prediction ("kriging"). In the second part, we develop a technique for reconstructing two-dimensional ion flow fields from line-of-sight projections using Tikhonov regularization. In the third part, we adapt our spatial statistical approach to global ionospheric imaging using total electron content (TEC) measurements derived from navigation satellite signals.

47. Geochemical and biological controls on trace metal transport in an acid mine impacted watershed.

Abstract

Water samples collected in an acid mine impacted watershed indicated that the concentrations of dissolved trace metals were diurnally influenced by mineral saturation, which is controlled primarily by pH and water temperature. Measurements taken suggested that these variations only occur at sample locations immediately downstream from the confluence of acidic and alkaline waters. It is at these locations where initial mineral precipitation occurred and where subtle changes in solubility were most affected, increasing trace metal removal when both the rate of photosynthesis (influencing pH in headwaters) and water temperature were at a maximum. The role of iron photoreduction (increased midday production of ferrous iron) on overall Cu, Mn, and Zn transport was also evaluated, but found to be inconclusive. Iron photoreduction may however influence adsorption and/or coprecipitation of trace metals through associated changes in oxidation state, solubility, and mineralogy of various iron colloids, which are produced upon the neutralization of acidic, metal enriched water. Furthermore, measured values of copper and zinc were compared to relative USEPA chronic criterion for exposure to continuous concentration (CCC) of metals by the calculation of a "toxicity unit" (TU). It was found that average values of both copper and zinc only exceeded the CCC (TU>1) in the acid mine-impacted Leona Creek. In general, zinc toxicity decreased while copper toxicity increased downstream of the confluence of the mine impacted Leona Creek and background Lion Creek (sampled at Lake Aliso), indicating a significant source of zinc in upstream, non mine-impacted samples.
