The aim of this meta-analysis was to systematize available empirical findings in the field of basic psychological needs and personality traits overlap. Study eligibility criteria were: three basic psychological needs defined within Self-Determination Theory (autonomy, competence, relatedness), Five-factor model/Big Five model of personality traits, self-reported data, essential statistical indicators, and independent samples. The final sample included 16 primary studies, 17 independent samples, with 206 independent effect sizes representing more than 10 500 participants. Fifteen independent meta-analysis were performed resulting in 15 statistically significant, small to moderate in size, correlation coefficients between needs and traits. All three needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) had negative correlations with neuroticism, and positive correlations with extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Multiple publication bias indicators left this conclusion unaltered. Due to a relatively small number of primary studies, additional moderator analyses were not performed even though a large amount of heterogeneity was identified. Self-perceived abilities (SPA), which play an important role in academic achievement, have been recently reported to be fully attributable to genetic and non-shared environmental influences. To replicate and extend this finding, 732 Croatian twins (15-22 years old) were assessed on cognitive ability, self-assessed intelligence (SAI), and Five Factor Model personality traits. In addition to attempting to replicate the finding that SAI is due to genetic and non-shared environmental influences, we used bivariate and multivariate genetic analyses to investigate genetic and environmental influences on the phenotypic association of IQ, SAI, and personality traits. The results replicated the finding that individual differences in SAI can be attributed to genetic and non-shared environmental influences. Bivariate and multivariate genetic analyses showed intelligence, SAI measures, and personality traits are inter-correlated not only at the phenotypic but also at the genotypic level. Multivariate analyses indicate that around 20% of IQ variance could be explained by SAI and personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness). In combination with other recent findings from behavior genetics, this result supports the idea of pleiotropy and generalist genes. (Contains 7 tables.)

Previous research regarding sex and age differences for sensation seeking in English, American, Canadian, and Australian samples showed clear sex differences and a decline of sensation seeking across ages. The 1978 Form V of the Sensation Seeking Scale was administered to a Croatian sample of 151 high school students and their 226 parents. Analysis showed that parents had lower mean scores than their children, consistent with the hypothesis that sensation seeking declines with age. Male subjects scored higher on the total Sensation Seeking, and Thrill and Adventure Seeking, Disinhibition, and Boredom Susceptibility subscales than female subjects, while there was no difference between male and female subjects on the Experience Seeking scale. Also, several sex-by-generation interactions were significant.

The aim of this study was to examine whether the differences in personality traits of different groups of musicians are real differences or stereotypes. In our study we included string, brass and woodwind players, singers, pianists and music pedagogy students, namely, more groups of musicians than in previous studies. Participants were 182 music students (103 female) with average age 20.86 years (SD = 2.72). Using the BFI-10 personality questionnaire, the participants had to evaluate their own personality traits, and then the personality traits of six groups of musicians. Participants also had to evaluate themselves and six groups of musicians on three pairs of adjectives: masculine–feminine (MF), insensitive/not emotional–sensitive/emotional (EM), and averse to alcohol consumption–prone to excessive alcohol consumption (AC). Results of the Kruskal–Wallis (K–W) test indicated that self-reported personality traits and self-reports on pairs of adjectives of different groups of musicians were coming from the same distribution. Comparison of self-reports with in-group and out-group peer reports showed that there are stereotypes about different groups of musicians. The differences between self-reports and peer-reports were most pronounced for openness, agreeableness, and proneness to alcohol consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to compare personality traits using the Big Five personality taxonomy and alcohol consumption of classical and heavy metal musicians. Also, we compared personality traits of classical and heavy metal musicians with norms for the Croatian population, and data on alcohol consumption with a representative sample of the general Croatian population. Participants in the study were men (N = 249) playing either classical (N = 113) or heavy metal music (N = 136). Personality was measured with the IPIP-50 personality questionnaire and participants answered several questions about alcohol consumption. We found no significant differences in personality traits between classical and heavy metal musicians, but both classical and heavy metal musicians differed significantly in personality from the norms, having higher scores on extraversion, agreeableness, and especially intellect. Belonging to a heavy metal musicians group was associated with consuming alcohol more often. Also, frequency of alcohol consumption was statistically higher for heavy metal musicians than in the general population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There are only a few studies in patients with haemophilia (PWH) that examined both quality of life and depressive symptoms, with only few studies examining their association. Aim of this study was to examine the association between depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in PWH from Croatia and Slovenia., Subjects and Methods: A total of 112 adult PWH on prophylactic (73%) or on-demand (27%) treatment were included in the study (median age 46 years, range 18-73 years). Depressive symptoms were assessed with BDI-II, HRQoL with SF-36v2, demographic and socioeconomic data were collected using a questionnaire, and clinical data were obtained from medical records., Results: All HRQoL scores were significantly negatively correlated with BDI-II in the -0.42 to -0.70 range (all p<0.05). Socio-demographic and clinical variables explained 28-51% of HRQoL variance scores. Depressive symptoms explained additional variance for six HRQoL domain scores, with incremental variance being larger for mental domain scores (ranging between 10-27%), and for Mental Component Summary score (26%)., Conclusions: This study's findings support that having depressive symptoms is associated with HRQoL of PWH, more so in the mental health than in the physical health domains.
