An $\mathit{ab\ initio}$ theory is devised for the quantum dynamics of molecules undergoing (multiple) ionization in ultrafast and intense light. Specifically, the intertwined problem of photoionization, radiative, and electronic transitions in the course of dissociation is addressed which arises, e.g., when molecules are exposed to XUV light or x rays from free electron lasers or attosecond light sources, but the approach is equally useful in optical strong-field physics. The coherent interaction of the molecule with the light in a specific charge state is also treated. I set out from an abstract formulation in terms of the quantum optical notion of system-reservoir interaction using a master equation in Lindblad form and analyze its short-time approximation. First, I express it in a direct sum rigged Hilbert space for an efficient solution with numerical methods for systems of differential equations. Second, I derive a treatment via quantum Monte Carlo wave packet (MCWP) propagation. The formalism is concretized to diatomic molecules in Born-Oppenheimer approximation whereby molecular rotation is disregarded. The numerical integration of the master equation is carried out with a suitably factored density matrix that exploits the locality of the Hamiltonian and the Lindblad superoperator with respect to the internuclear distance. The formulation of the MCWP for molecules requires a thorough analysis of the quantum jump process; namely, the dependence on the continuous distance renders a straight wave packet promotion useless and, instead, a projected outer product needs to be employed involving an integrated quantum jump operator., Comment: 14 pages, RevTeX4.1, revised

We measured the fluorescence photon yield of neon upon soft x-ray ionization (~1200 eV) from the x-ray free electron laser at Linac Coherent Light Source, and demonstrated the usage of a grazing incidence spectrometer with a variable linespacing grating to perform x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy on a gas phase system. Our measurements also allowed us to estimate the focal size of the beam from the theoretical description developed, in terms of the rate equation approximation accounting for photoionization shake-off of neutral neon and double Auger decay of single core holes., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We theoretically examine neon atoms in ultrashort and intense x rays from free electron lasers and compare our results with data from experiments conducted at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). For this purpose, we treat in detail the electronic structure in all possible nonrelativistic cationic configurations using a relativistic multiconfiguration approach. The interaction with the x rays is described in rate-equation approximation. To understand the mechanisms of the interaction, a path analysis is devised which allows us to investigate what sequences of photoionization and decay processes lead to a specific configuration and with what probability. Thereby, we uncover a connection to the mathematics of graph theory and formal languages. In detail, we study the ion yields and find that plain rate equations do not provide a satisfactory description. We need to extend the rate equations for neon to incorporate double Auger decay of a $K$-shell vacancy and photoionization shake off for neutral neon. Shake off is included for valence and core ionization; the former has hitherto been overlooked but has important consequences for the ion yields from an x-ray energy below the core ionization threshold. Furthermore, we predict the photon yields from XUV and x-ray fluorescence; these allow one insights into the configurations populated by the interaction with the x rays. I classify multiphoton absorption into separable, linked, and simultaneous processes. The first and second types can be distinguished when the rate-equation approximation is valid whereas the third type refers to the case when the full description of multiphoton absorption is essential. For this purpose, rate equations are solved analytically without decay processes which shows that even if many photons are absorbed the interaction with the light field is linear and one has the case of separable multiphoton absorption. Next a short-pulse approximation is investigated in which I first solve the rate equations without decay processes and then solve only rate equations for the ensuing decay. Finally, the full rate equations are examined and a successive approximation of the underlying Volterra integral equation of the second kind is derived leading to linked multiphoton absorption by the involved decay widths. The three methods are applied to a nitrogen atom in intense and ultrafast x rays from free-electron lasers (FELs). The linearity theorem barely approximates the results in the presence of decay processes which is also not satisfactorily corrected for by the short-pulse approximation. We study theoretically the quantum dynamics of nitrogen molecules (N$_2$) exposed to intense and ultrafast x-rays at a wavelength of 1.1 nm (1100 eV photon energy) from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free electron laser. Molecular rate equations are derived to describe the intertwined photoionization, decay, and dissociation processes occurring for N$_2$. This model complements our earlier phenomenological approaches, the single-atom, symmetric-sharing, and fragmentation-matrix models of J. Chem. Phys. $\mathbf{136}$, 214310 (2012). Our rate-equations are used to obtain the effective pulse energy at the sample and the time scale for the dissociation of the metastable dication N$_2^{2+}$. This leads to a very good agreement between the theoretically and experimentally obtained ion yields and, consequently, the average charge states. The effective pulse energy is found to decrease with shortening pulse duration. This variation together with a change in the molecular fragmentation pattern and frustrated absorption---an effect that reduces absorption of x-rays due to (double) core hole formation---are the causes for the drop of the average charge state with shortening LCLS pulse duration discovered previously., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, LaTeX

Optical frequency combs have had a remarkable impact on precision spectroscopy. Enabling this technology in the x-ray domain is expected to result in wide-ranging applications, such as stringent tests of astrophysical models and quantum electrodynamics, a more sensitive search for the variability of fundamental constants, and precision studies of nuclear structure. Ultraprecise x-ray atomic clocks may also be envisaged. In this work, an x-ray pulse-shaping method is put forward to generate a comb in the absorption spectrum of an ultrashort high-frequency pulse. The method employs an optical-frequency-comb laser, manipulating the system's dipole response to imprint a comb on an excited transition with a high photon energy. The described scheme provides higher comb frequencies and requires lower optical-comb peak intensities than currently explored methods, preserves the overall width of the optical comb, and may be implemented by presently available x-ray technology.

X-ray free-electron lasers have had an enormous impact on x-ray science by achieving femtosecond pulses with unprecedented intensities. However, present-day facilities operating by the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) principle have a number of shortcomings, namely, their radiation has a chaotic pulse profile and short coherence times. We put forward a scheme for a neon-based atomic inner-shell x-ray laser (XRL) which produces temporally and spatially coherent subfemtosecond pulses that are controlled by and synchronized to an optical laser with femtosecond precision. High-order harmonic generation (HHG) is combined with resonant x-ray excitation of a core electron into the transient valence vacancy that is created in the course of the HHG process. To describe this setting, I develop a two-active-electron quantum theory for a single atom assuming no Coulomb interaction among the electrons; one electron performs a typical HHG three-step process whereas another electron is excited (or even Rabi flops) by intense x rays from the core shell into the valence hole after the first electron has left the atom. Depending on the amplitude to find a vacancy in the valence and the core, the returning continuum electron recombines with the valence and the core, respectively, emitting high-order harmonic (HH) radiation that is characteristic of the combined process. After presenting the theory of x-ray boosted HHG for continuous-wave light fields, I develop a description for x-ray pulses with a time-varying amplitude and phase. An x-ray pulse-shaping scheme is put forward for imprinting an optical frequency comb onto the radiation emitted on a driven x-ray transition, thus producing an x-ray frequency comb. A four-level system is used to describe the level structure of N ions driven by narrow-bandwidth x rays, an optical auxiliary laser, and an optical frequency comb. By including many-particle enhancement of the emitted resonance fluorescence, a spectrum is predicted consisting of equally spaced narrow lines which are centered on an x-ray transition energy and separated by the same tooth spacing as the driving optical frequency comb. Given a known x-ray reference frequency, our comb could be employed to determine an unknown x-ray frequency. We theoretically show that core-excited state populations can be efficiently manipulated with strong optical fields during their decay, which takes place in a few femtoseconds. We focus on the $1s^{-1}3p$ resonant excitation in neon, where the $1s^{-1}3p$ and $1s^{-1}3s$ core-excited states are coupled by an optical field. By analyzing the Auger electron spectrum we observe the inner-shell population transfer induced by the optical coupling. We also show that the angular anisotropy of the Auger electron is imprinted in the multipeak structure induced by the optical-dressed continuum, namely sidebands.

High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in simultaneous intense near-infrared (NIR) laser light and brilliant x rays above an inner-shell absorption edge is examined. A tightly bound inner-shell electron is transferred into the continuum. Then, NIR light takes over and drives the liberated electron through the continuum until it eventually returns to the cation leading in some cases to recombination and emission of a high-order harmonic (HH) photon that is upshifted by the x-ray photon energy. We develop a theory of this scenario and apply it to $1s$ electrons of neon atoms. The boosted HH light is used to generate a single attosecond pulse in the kiloelectronvolt regime. We devise a theoretical description for the response of nitrogen molecules (N2) to ultrashort and intense x rays from the free electron laser (FEL) Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We set out from a rate-equation description for the x-ray absorption by a nitrogen atom. The equations are formulated using all one-x-ray-photon absorption cross sections and the Auger and radiative decay widths of multiply-ionized nitrogen atoms. Cross sections are obtained with a one-electron theory and decay widths are determined from ab initio computations using the Dirac-Hartree-Slater (DHS) method. We also calculate all binding and transition energies of nitrogen atoms in all charge states with the DHS method as the difference of two self-consistent field calculations (Delta SCF method). To describe the interaction with N2, a detailed investigation of intense x-ray-induced ionization and molecular fragmentation are carried out. As a figure of merit, we calculate ion yields and the average charge state measured in recent experiments at the LCLS. We use a series of phenomenological models of increasing sophistication to unravel the mechanisms of the interaction of x rays with N2: a single atom, a symmetric-sharing model, and a fragmentation-matrix model are developed. Several correlation and interference effects in strong-field physics are investigated. We show that the interference of continuum wave packets can be the dominant mechanism of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the over-the-barrier regime. Next, we combine HHG with resonant x-ray excitation to force the recolliding continuum electron to recombine with a core hole rather than the valence hole from that it was previously tunnel ionized. The scheme opens up perspectives for nonlinear xuv physics, attosecond x-ray pulses, and spectroscopy of core orbitals. Then, a method is proposed to generate attochirp-free harmonic pulses by engineering the appropriate electron wave packet. The combination of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) with resonant XUV excitation of a core electron into the transient valence vacancy that is created in the course of the HHG process is investigated theoretically. We present a theoretical study of transient absorption and reshaping of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses by helium atoms dressed with a moderately strong infrared (IR) laser field. We formulate the atomic response using both the frequency-dependent absorption cross section and a time-frequency approach based on the time-dependent dipole induced by the light fields. The latter approach can be used in cases when an ultrafast dressing pulse induces transient effects, and/or when the atom exchanges energy with multiple frequency components of the XUV field. We first characterize the dressed atom response by calculating the frequency-dependent absorption cross section for XUV energies between 20 and 24 eV for several dressing wavelengths between 400 and 2000 nm and intensities up to 10^12 W/cm^2. We find that for dressing wavelengths near 1600 nm, there is an Autler-Townes splitting of the 1s ---> 2p transition that can potentially lead to transparency for absorption of XUV light tuned to this transition. We study the effect of this XUV transparency in a macroscopic helium gas by incorporating the time-frequency approach into a solution of the coupled Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations. We explore the potential of double core hole electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis in terms of x-ray two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy (XTPPS). The creation of deep single and double core vacancies induces significant reorganization of valence electrons. The corresponding relaxation energies and the interatomic relaxation energies are evaluated by CASSCF calculations. We propose a method how to experimentally extract these quantities by the measurement of single and double core-hole ionization potentials (IPs and DIPs). The influence of the chemical environment on these DIPs is also discussed for states with two holes at the same atomic site and states with two holes at two different atomic sites. Electron density difference between the ground and double core-hole states clearly shows the relaxations accompanying the double core-hole ionization. The effect is also compared with the sensitivity of single core hole ionization potentials (IPs) arising in single core hole electron spectroscopy. We have demonstrated the method for a representative set of small molecules LiF, BeO, BF, CO, N2, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, CO2 and N2O. We examine the archetype of an interference experiment for Auger electrons: two electron wave packets are launched by inner-shell ionizing a krypton atom using two attosecond light pulses with a variable time delay. This setting is an attosecond realization of the Ramsey method of separated oscillatory fields. Interference of the two ejected Auger-electron wave packets is predicted, indicating that the coherence between the two pulses is passed to the Auger electrons. For the detection of the interference pattern an accurate coincidence measurement of photo- and Auger electrons is necessary. We devise an ab initio formalism for the quantum dynamics of Auger decay by laser-dressed atoms which are inner-shell ionized by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light. The optical dressing laser is assumed to be sufficiently weak such that ground-state electrons are neither excited nor ionized by it. However, the laser has a strong effect on continuum electrons which we describe in strong-field approximation with Volkov waves. The XUV light pulse has a low peak intensity and its interaction is treated as a one-photon process. The quantum dynamics of the inner-shell hole creation with subsequent Auger decay is given by equations of motion (EOMs). For this paper, the EOMs are simplified in terms of an essential-states model which is solved analytically and averaged over magnetic subshells. We apply our theory to the M_4,5 N_1 N_2,3 Auger decay of a 3d hole in a krypton atom. The orbitals are approximated by scaled hydrogenic wave functions. A single attosecond pulse produces 3d vacancies which Auger decay in the presence of an 800nm laser with an intensity of 10^13 W / cm^2. Using attoscience, we study the electron correlations responsible for Auger decay in krypton atoms. Exploration of a new ultrafast-ultrasmall frontier in atomic and molecular physics has begun. Not only is is possible to control outer-shell electron dynamics with intense ultrafast optical lasers, but now control of inner-shell processes has become possible by combining intense infrared/optical lasers with tunable sources of x-ray radiation. This marriage of strong-field laser and x-ray physics has led to the discovery of methods to control reversibly resonant x-ray absorption in atoms and molecules on ultrafast timescales. Using a strong optical dressing field, resonant x-ray absorption in atoms can be markedly suppressed, yielding an example of electromagnetically induced transparency for x rays. Resonant x-ray absorption can also be controlled in molecules using strong non-resonant, polarized laser fields to align the framework of a molecule, and therefore its unoccupied molecular orbitals to which resonant absorption occurs. At higher laser intensities, ultrafast field ionization produces an irreversible change in x-ray absorption. We investigated the complex index of refraction in the x-ray regime of atoms in laser light. The laser (intensity up to 10^13 W/cm^2, wavelength 800nm) modifies the atomic states but, by assumption, does not excite or ionize the atoms in their electronic ground state. Using quantum electrodynamics, we devise an ab initio theory to calculate the dynamic dipole polarizability and the photoabsorption cross section, which are subsequently used to determine the real and imaginary part, respectively, of the refractive index. The interaction with the laser is treated nonperturbatively; the x-ray interaction is described in terms of a one-photon process. We numerically solve the resolvents involved using a single-vector Lanczos algorithm. Finally, we formulate rate equations to copropagate a laser and an x-ray pulse through a gas cell. Our theory is applied to argon. We study the x-ray polarizability and absorption near the argon K edge over a large range of dressing-laser intensities. We find electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for x rays on the Ar 1s --> 4p pre-edge resonance. We demonstrate that EIT in Ar allows one to imprint the shape of an ultrafast laser pulse on a broader x-ray pulse (duration 100ps, photon energy 3.2keV). We present a computational study of the rotational molecular dynamics of bromotrifluoromethane (CF3Br) molecules in gas phase. The rotation is manipulated with an offresonant, 800nm laser. The molecules are treated as rigid rotors. Frequently, we use a computationally efficient linear rotor model for CF3Br which we compare with selected results for full symmetric-rotor computations. The expectation value (t) is discussed. Especially, the transition from impulsive to adiabatic alignment, the temperature dependence of the maximally achievable alignment and its intensity dependence are investigated. In a next step, we examine resonant x-ray absorption as an accurate tool to study laser manipulation of molecular rotation. Specifically, we investigate the impact of the x-ray pulse duration on the signal (particularly its temporal resolution), and study the temperature dependence of the achievable absorption. Most importantly, we demonstrated that using picosecond x-ray pulses, one can accurately measure the expectation value (t) for impulsively aligned CF3Br molecules. We point out that a control of the rotational dynamics opens up a novel way to imprint shapes onto long x-ray pulses on a picosecond time scale. We demonstrate a hard x-ray probe of laser-aligned small molecules. To align small molecules with optical lasers, high intensities at nonresonant wavelengths are necessary. We use 95 ps pulses focused to 40 mum from an 800 nm Ti:sapphire laser at a peak intensity of 10^12 W/cm^2 to create an ensemble of aligned bromotrifluoromethane (CF3Br) molecules. Linearly polarized, 120 ps x-ray pulses, focused to 10 mum, tuned to the Br 1s --> sigma* pre-edge resonance at 13.476 keV, probe the ensemble of laser-aligned molecules. Strong optical laser fields modify the way x rays interact with matter. This allows us to use x rays to gain deeper insight into strong-field processes. Alternatively, optical lasers may be utilized to control the propagation of x rays through a medium. Gas-phase systems are particularly suitable for illustrating the basic principles underlying combined x-ray and laser interactions. We devise a theory of x-ray absorption by symmetric-top molecules which are aligned by an intense optical laser. Initially, the density matrix of the system is composed of the electronic ground state of the molecules and a thermal ensemble of rigid-rotor eigenstates. We formulate equations of motion of the two-color (laser plus x rays) rotational-electronic problem. The interaction with the laser is assumed to be nonresonant; it is described by an electric dipole polarizability tensor. X-ray absorption is approximated as a one-photon process. It is shown that the equations can be separated such that the interaction with the laser can be treated independently of the x rays. The laser-only density matrix is propagated numerically. After each time step, the x-ray absorption is calculated. We apply our theory to study adiabatic alignment of bromine molecules (Br2). The required dynamic polarizabilities are determined using the ab initio linear response methods coupled-cluster singles (CCS), second-order approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CC2), and coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD). For the description of x-ray absorption on the sigma_g 1s --> sigma_u 4p resonance, a parameter-free two-level model is used for the electronic structure of the molecules. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is predicted for x rays in laser-dressed neon gas. The x-ray photoabsorption cross section and polarizability near the Ne K edge are calculated using an ab initio theory suitable for optical strong-field problems. The laser wavelength is tuned close to the transition between 1s^-1 3s and 1s^-1 3p (approximately 800nm). The minimum laser intensity required to observe EIT is of the order of 10^12 W/cm^2. Femtosecond high-order harmonic transient absorption spectroscopy is used to resolve the complete |j,m> quantum state distribution of Xe+ produced by optical strong-field ionization of Xe atoms at 800nm. Probing at the Xe N_4/5 edge yields a population distribution rho_j,|m| of rho_3/2,1/2 : rho_1/2,1/2 : rho_3/2,3/2 = 75 +- 6 : 12 +- 3 : 13 +- 6 %. The result is compared to a tunnel ionization calculation with the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling, revealing nonadiabatic ionization behavior. An ab initio theory is devised for the x-ray photoabsorption cross section of atoms in the field of a moderately intense optical laser (800nm, 10^13 W/cm^2). The laser dresses the core-excited atomic states, which introduces a dependence of the cross section on the angle between the polarization vectors of the two linearly polarized radiation sources. We use the Hartree-Fock-Slater approximation to describe the atomic many-particle problem in conjunction with a nonrelativistic quantum-electrodynamic approach to treat the photon-electron interaction. The continuum wave functions of ejected electrons are treated with a complex absorbing potential that is derived from smooth exterior complex scaling. The solution to the two-color (x-ray plus laser) problem is discussed in terms of a direct diagonalization of the complex symmetric matrix representation of the Hamiltonian. Alternative treatments with time-independent and time-dependent non-Hermitian perturbation theories are presented that exploit the weak interaction strength between x rays and atoms. We apply the theory to study the photoabsorption cross section of krypton atoms near the K edge. The Hartree-Fock equations are modified to directly yield Wannier functions following a proposal of Shukla et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 262, 213-218 (1996)]. This approach circumvents the a posteriori application of the Wannier transformation to Bloch functions. I give a novel and rigorous derivation of the relevant equations by introducing an orthogonalizing potential to ensure the orthogonality among the resulting functions. The properties of these, so-called a priori Wannier functions, are analyzed and the relation of the modified Hartree-Fock equations to the conventional, Bloch-function-based equations is elucidated. It is pointed out that the modified equations offer a different route to maximally localized Wannier functions. Their computational solution is found to involve an effort that is comparable to the effort for the solution of the conventional equations. We study the quasiparticle band structure of isolated, infinite HF and HCl bent (zigzag) chains and examine the effect of the crystal field on the energy levels of the constituent monomers. The chains are one of the simplest but realistic models of the corresponding three-dimensional crystalline solids. To describe the isolated monomers and the chains, we set out from the Hartree-Fock approximation, harnessing the advanced Green's function methods "local molecular orbital algebraic diagrammatic construction" (ADC) scheme and "local crystal orbital ADC" (CO-ADC) in a strict second order approximation, ADC(2,2) and CO-ADC(2,2), respectively, to account for electron correlations. The configuration space of the periodic correlation calculations is found to converge rapidly only requiring nearest-neighbor contributions to be regarded. Although electron correlations cause a pronounced shift of the quasiparticle band structure of the chains with respect to the Hartree-Fock result, the bandwidth essentially remains unaltered in contrast to, e.g., covalently bound compounds., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, RevTeX4, corrected typoes

Hydrogen bonding in infinite HF and HCl bent (zigzag) chains is studied using the ab initio coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) correlation method. The correlation contribution to the binding energy is decomposed in terms of nonadditive many-body interactions between the monomers in the chains, the so-called energy increments. Van der Waals constants for the two-body dispersion interaction between distant monomers in the infinite chains are extracted from this decomposition. They allow a partitioning of the correlation contribution to the binding energy into short- and long-range terms. Using the Green's function formalism, an ab initio theory for band structures of crystals is derived starting from the Hartree-Fock approximation. It is based on the algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme for the self-energy which is formulated for crystal orbitals (CO-ADC). In this approach, the poles of the Green's function are determined by solving a suitable Hermitian eigenvalue problem. The method is not only applicable to the outer valence and conduction bands, it is also stable for inner valence bands where strong electron correlations are effective. The key to the proposed scheme is to evaluate the self-energy in terms of Wannier orbitals before transforming it to a crystal momentum representation. Exploiting the fact that electron correlations are mainly local, one can truncate the lattice summations by an appropriate configuration selection scheme. This yields a flat configuration space; i.e., its size scales only linearly with the number of atoms per unit cell for large systems and, under certain conditions, the computational effort to determine band structures also scales linearly. As a first application of the new formalism, a lithium fluoride crystal has been chosen. A minimal basis set description is studied, and a satisfactory agreement with previous theoretical and experimental results for the fundamental band gap and the width of the F 2p valence band complex is obtained., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, RevTeX4, new section on lithium fluoride

Basis set convergence of the Hartree-Fock and the correlation energy is examined for the hydrogen bonded infinite bent chains (HF)_infinity and (HCl)_infinity. We employ series of correlation consistent basis sets up to quintuple zeta quality together with a coupled cluster method (CCSD) to describe electron correlation on ab initio level. The Hartree-Fock energy converges rapidly with increasing basis set quality whereas the correlation energy is found to be slowly convergent for the same series of basis sets. We study basis set extrapolation for (HF)_infinity and (HCl)_infinity and show that it substantially enhances the accuracy of both the Hartree-Fock and the correlation energy in extended systems., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, LaTeX, corrected typos

We devise a non-Hermitian Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation theory for the single- and the multireference case to tackle both the many-body problem and the decay problem encountered, for example, in the study of electronic resonances in molecules. A complex absorbing potential (CAP) is employed to facilitate a treatment of resonance states that is similar to the well-established bound-state techniques. For the perturbative approach, the full CAP-Schroedinger Hamiltonian, in suitable representation, is partitioned according to the Epstein-Nesbet scheme. The equations we derive in the framework of the single-reference perturbation theory turn out to be identical to those obtained by a time-dependent treatment in Wigner-Weisskopf theory. The multireference perturbation theory is studied for a model problem and is shown to be an efficient and accurate method. Algorithmic aspects of the integration of the perturbation theories into existing ab initio programs are discussed, and the simplicity of their implementation is elucidated., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX4.2, erratum added

The noble-gas atom xenon can bind fluorine atoms and form several stable compounds. We study the electronic structure of the xenon fluorides (XeFn, n = 2,4,6) by calculating their ionization spectra using a Green's function method, which allows to treat many-body effects at a high level. Our focus is on the valence region and on the Xe 4d core hole. We observe a sensitive dependence of the spectra on the number of fluorine ligands. Systematic line shifts are uncovered and explained. In the Xe 5s and F 2s inner-valence regimes, from XeF2 to XeF6, the usefulness of the one-particle picture of ionization is found to become progressively worse. Moreover, adding the electronegative fluorine ligands seems to enhance--not suppress--the Auger decay of a Xe 4d core hole., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables, RevTeX4, corrected typos

A hole in a 4d orbital of atomic xenon relaxes through Auger decay after a lifetime of 3 fs. Adding electronegative fluorine ligands to form xenon fluoride molecules, results in withdrawal of valence-electron density from Xe. Thus, within the one-center picture of Auger decay, a lowered Xe 4d Auger width would be expected, in contradiction, however, with experiment. Employing extensive ab initio calculations within the framework of many-body Green's functions, we determine all available decay channels in XeFn and characterize these channels by means of a two-hole population analysis. We derive a relation between two-hole population numbers and partial Auger widths. On this basis, interatomic electronic decay processes are demonstrated to be so strong in the xenon fluorides that they overcompensate the reduction in intra-atomic Auger width and lead to the experimentally observed trend. The nature of the relevant processes is discussed.
