The national Closing the Gap reform provides a mandate for mainstream organisations to undergo structural transformation to better address the needs and concerns of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In the criminal justice sector, the reform resonates strongly with ongoing discussions about how both policy and practice can address the significant over‐representation of Aboriginal people across the criminal justice system. One way that structural transformation can occur is through the genuine involvement of Aboriginal knowledge holders and communities in policy development. This study illustrates how this might happen in relation to youth justice policy and programme design. Eighteen Aboriginal community members from a town in rural New South Wales participated in a series of interviews relevant to the Closing the Gap target. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify four key themes relevant to the development of justice policy: supporting cultural identity in a post‐colonial context; articulating strengths and resources which can be mobilised in the community; the centrality of poverty to offending; and responding to intergenerational trauma. The study illustrates how non‐Indigenous policymakers and practitioners might approach the task of engagement and consultation by identifying Aboriginal knowledge as a legitimate epistemic resource that they can draw upon to guide the ongoing development of evidence‐based policy and programmes.

Nutrition education programs aim to improve food literacy domains covering the planning and management, selection, preparation and cooking and eating of healthy food. Reviews indicate programs are effective but acknowledge challenges with evaluation of community focused delivery. Food Sensations ® for Adults (FSA) is a free four-week nutrition and cooking program targeted at low-to-middle income Western Australians who would like to improve their food literacy. The aim of this research was assess how effective FSA is in changing food literacy and selected dietary behaviours. Statistical analysis identified a significant increase in postprogram scores for domains of planning and management, selection and preparation using factor scores (n = 1092). The proportion of the score increase in the postprogram scores compared to the preprogram scores was 10-25%. There was also a significant increase in self-reported fruit and vegetable serve intake, equating to an average increase of ¼ serve/day of fruit and ½ serve/day of vegetables. Of those classified as low food literacy, 61-74% improved postprogram scores in the three domains. FSA is effective in improving food literacy and dietary behaviours and the results add to the evidence base as to how effective these programs can be and for whom they should be targeted for future success.

Food literacy programs aim to improve behaviours required to achieve a quality diet. The objectives of this study were to assess the demographic, food literacy related and dietary behaviour of participants enrolling in Food Sensations® for Adults, a free four-week food literacy program and identify the subgroup of participants who benefit most. Cross-sectional pre-program questionnaire data (n = 1626) from participants enrolling in the program was used to stratify into low, middle and high food-literacy tertiles. Factor scores from a reliability analysis of food literacy behaviours were then used to produce a composite score). Participants were 80.2% female, 56% aged 26 to 45 years and 73.3% from low to middle socio-economic areas. Demographic characteristics were not a significant predictor of the lowest composite food-literacy group. Those with the lowest composite food-literacy tertile score were more likely to have lower self-rated cooking skills, a negative attitude to the cost of healthy foods, lower intakes of fruits and vegetables and a higher frequency of consuming takeaway food and sugary drinks. Food literacy programs must focus on recruiting those who have low self-rated cooking skills, who consider healthy foods expensive and have poor dietary intakes and will most likely to benefit from such programs.

© 2019 by the authors. Poor food literacy behaviours may contribute to food insecurity in developed countries. The aim of this research was to describe the apparent prevalence of food insecurity in adults at enrolment in a food literacy program and to examine the relationship between food insecurity and a range of independent variables. Individuals attending the Food Sensations® for Adults program in Western Australia from May 2016 to April 2018 completed a pre-program questionnaire (n = 1433) indicating if they had run of money for food in the past month (food insecurity indicator), frequency of food literacy behaviours, selected dietary behaviours, and demographic characteristics. The level of food insecurity reported by participants (n = 1379) was 40.5%. Results from multiple logistic regression demonstrated that behaviours related to planning and management, shopping, preparation, and cooking were all statistically independently associated with food insecurity, in addition to soft/soda drink consumption, education, employment status, and being born in Australia. The results are salient as they indicate an association between food literacy and food insecurity. The implications are that food insecure participants may respond differently to food literacy programs. It may be necessary to screen people enrolling in programs, tailor program content, and include comprehensive measures in evaluation to determine effect on the impact of food literacy programs on different subgroups.

© 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the existence of consumers’ need for uniqueness (CNFU) and status consumption (SC) in Generation Y (Gen Y). In exploring such, the equivalency of each construct (measurement invariance and population heterogeneity) is examined across early and late Gen Y consumers. Design/methodology/approach: A self-administered online survey is examined, with the sample of 397 Gen Y respondents analyzed through structural equation modeling. Findings: The results reveal that Gen Y consumers experience a need for uniqueness in a three-factor composition which is invariant across earlier and later Gen Y consumers. Similarly, SC is observed amongst Gen Y, with the empirical results again equivalent across the two groups. Finally, SC is supported to directly influence Gen Y’s purchase intention (PI) of luxury fashion goods, with the three CNFU constructs failing to directly influence PI, or SC’s influence on PI. Practical implications: Results suggest to practitioners that not only are CNFU and SC motivations existent in Gen Y consumers, but they act similarly across early (19-23) and later (24-34) members of the consumer segment. Additionally, SC positively influences Gen Y’s purchase behavior of luxury fashion goods. Practitioners may target such consumers with reassurance that these groups do not behave differently with respect to CNFU and SC. Originality/value: This study explores for the first time the three factors of CNFU and SC amongst Gen Y consumers. Such analysis, including the invariance of responses between those later and earlier born Gen Y consumers, and the structural relationships shared between these constructs and PI of luxury fashion goods offer intriguing insights for academics and practitioners alike.

Purpose – In Australia, the Foodbank of Western Australia (Foodbank WA) has a reputation for being at the forefront of health promotion. The purpose of this paper is to describe Foodbank WA’s innovative food bank plus approach of incorporating healthy lifestyle initiatives (i.e. nutrition and physical activity education) into its core food bank business, so as to target priority issues such as food insecurity, poor food literacy, overweight, obesity, poor nutrition and physical inactivity.Design/methodology/approach – A case study approach was utilised to explore Foodbank WA’s Healthy Food for Alls(HFFA) strategy. HFFA is a comprehensive state wide, school and community based strategy, including the School Breakfast Programme, Food Sensationss and Choose to Move initiatives, designed to promote healthy lifestyles to low socioeconomic and vulnerable groups – a major target group of food banks.Findings – Since its inception in 2007, the delivery of food, education and resources has increased across all of Foodbank WA’s HFFA initiatives. Evaluation results from feedback surveys demonstratethe success of these interventions to positively impact upon food security, health and wellbeing ofparticipants.Originality/value – HFFA is a unique, effective and novel strategy that addresses a number of healthand nutrition issues. Food banks are well placed to deliver food literacy and healthy lifestyle initiatives.Foodbank WA’s holistic approach and demonstrated success provides other food banks with a bestpractice model and knowledge base for the development of similar health promotion strategies andinterventions.

We previously proposed 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) dephosphorylation within immune cells as an intracellular mechanism linking exercise and immunosuppression. In this study, AMPK phosphorylation underwent transient (<1 h) decreases (53.8 ± 7.2% basal) immediately after exercise (45 min of cycling at 70% V̇o2max) in a cohort of 16 adult male participants. Similar effects were seen with running. However, because exercise-induced inactivation of AMPK was previously shown to occur in an AMP-independent manner, the means by which AMPK is inactivated in this context is not yet clear. To investigate the hypothesis that exercise-induced inactivation of AMPK is mediated via signaling mechanisms distinct from changes in cellular AMP-to-ATP ratios, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and intracellular Ca2+ signaling were investigated in mononuclear cells before and after exercise and in cultured monocytic MM6 cells. In in vitro studies, treatment with an antioxidant (ascorbic acid, 4 h, 50 μM) decreased MM6 cell intracellular ROS levels (88.0 ± 5.2% basal) and induced dephosphorylation of AMPK (44.7 ± 17.6% basal). By analogy, the fact that exercise decreased mononuclear cell ROS content (32.8 ± 16.6% basal), possibly due to downregulation (43.4 ± 8.0% basal) of mRNA for NOX2, the catalytic subunit of the cytoplasmic ROS-generating enzyme NADPH oxidase, may provide an explanation for the AMPK-dephosphorylating effect of exercise. In contrast, exercise-induced Ca2+ signaling events did not seem to be coupled to changes in AMPK activity. Thus we propose that the exercise-induced decreases in both intracellular ROS and AMPK phosphorylation seen in this study constitute evidence supporting a role for ROS in controlling AMPK, and hence immune function, in the context of exercise-induced immunosuppression.
