At frequencies below 1\,Hz, fluctuations in atmospheric emission in the Chajnantor region in northern Chile are the primary source of interference for bolometric millimeter-wave observations. This paper focuses on the statistics of these fluctuations using measurements from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) water vapor radiometer. After introducing a method for separating atmospheric effects from other systematic effects, we present a direct measurement of the temporal outer scale of turbulence of $\tau_0\approx50$s corresponding to a spatial scale of $L_0\approx500$m. At smaller scales, the fluctuations are well described by the Kolmogorov 2/3 power law until, at yet smaller scales, the effects of beam smearing become important. As a part of this study, we present measurements of the atmosphere by the APEX radiometer over 20 years, focused on fluctuations in precipitable water vapor (PWV). We find that the 30-minute mean of the total PWV is not in general a robust estimator of the level of fluctuations. We show that the microwave frequency spectrum of these fluctuations is in good agreement with predictions by the \texttt{am} code for bands above 90~GHz. We then show that the variance of fluctuations in ACT's mm-wave bands correlates with the variance of fluctuations in PWV measured by APEX, even though the observatories are 6\,km apart and observe different lines of sight. The long-term solar magnetic activity and its cyclical behaviour, which is maintained by a dynamo mechanism, are both still challenging for the astrophysics. In particular, an atypical event occurred between 1645 and 1715 when the solar activity was remarkably decreased and the number of sunspots got extremely reduced. However, it is still unclear what happened to the solar cycle. The discovery of longer activity minima in cool stars may shed light on the nature of the complex mechanisms involved in the long-term behaviour of the solar-stellar dynamo. Our aim is to explore if the G5V solar-like star HD 4915, which showed a striking chromospheric activity pattern in a previous study performed with HIRES data, could be considered a bona fide Maunder Minimum (hereafter MM) candidate. We have analyzed over 380 spectra acquired between 2003 and 2022 using HARPS and HIRES spectrographs. We carried out a detailed search of activity signatures in HD 4915 by using the Mount Wilson and the Balmer H$_{\alpha}$ activity indexes. This task was performed by means of the GLS periodogram. The new HARPS data show that the chromospheric activity of HD 4915 is not decreasing. In fact, the rise of the activity after the broad minimum in three years gets to the level of activity before that phase, suggesting that it is not entering into a MM phase. HD 4915 shows a distinctive activity behaviour initially attributed to a possible and incipient MM phase. The additional HARPS data allow us to discard a MM in the star. Our analysis shows that the complex activity pattern of HD 4915 could be ruled by a multiple activity cycle, being a shorter cycle of 4.8-yr modulated by a potential longer one. This study uncovers novel vulnerabilities within Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols that extend beyond traditional implementation flaws, such as loopholes. These newly identified vulnerabilities arise from the complex interaction between Bell Inequalities (BIs) and Hidden Variable Theories (HVTs), further exacerbated by the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle (HUP). Through a combination of theoretical analysis, simulations, and quantum experiments, we reveal critical security weaknesses that challenge the core assumptions of today's quantum cryptography. While these vulnerabilities differ from known loopholes, when considered alongside them and traditional cyberattacks, they present a significant threat to the robustness of QKD and quantum integrity systems. These results provide a new perspective to rethink current quantum security frameworks to ensure the robustness of future quantum cryptographic and quantum integrity protocols.

We report VI CCD photometry of the globular cluster cluster NGC 1851. We aim to study the membership of the variable stars detected in the field of the cluster as listed in the Catalogue of Variable stars in Globular Clusters (CVSGC; Clement et al. 2001) and reported by the Gaia mission. We cross match the two sets of variables to produce light curves that lead to the estimation of physical parameters. The resulting colour-magnitude diagram (CMD), free of likely field stars, enables to confirm the position of the variables, their type and evolutionary stage. We provide new estimations of the period using data acquired on a long timebase. The Fourier decomposition of cluster member RR Lyrae light curves lead to a mean metalicity and distance of \([Fe/H]_{ZW} = -1.35 \pm 0.22\) dex and \(11.9 \pm 0.6\) kpc. This paper introduces a novel anomaly detection framework that combines the robust statistical principles of density-estimation-based anomaly detection methods with the representation-learning capabilities of deep learning models. The method originated from this framework is presented in two different versions: a shallow approach employing a density-estimation model based on adaptive Fourier features and density matrices, and a deep approach that integrates an autoencoder to learn a low-dimensional representation of the data. By estimating the density of new samples, both methods are able to find normality scores. The methods can be seamlessly integrated into an end-to-end architecture and optimized using gradient-based optimization techniques. To evaluate their performance, extensive experiments were conducted on various benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate that both versions of the method can achieve comparable or superior performance when compared to other state-of-the-art methods. We address the Poincar\'e-Perron's classical problem of approximation for high order linear differential equations in the class of almost periodic type functions, extending the results for a second order linear differential equation in [23]. We obtain explicit formulae for solutions of these equations, for any fixed order $n\ge 3$, by studying a Riccati type equation associated with the logarithmic derivative of a solution. Moreover, we provide sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of a fundamental system of solutions. The fixed point Banach argument allows us to find almost periodic and asymptotically almost periodic solutions to this Riccati type equation. A decomposition property of the perturbations induces a decomposition on the Riccati type equation and its solutions. In particular, by using this decomposition we obtain asymptotically almost periodic and also $p$-almost periodic solutions to the Riccati type equation. We made a survey of the variable stars in a $13.2 \times 13.2$ arcmin$^2$ centered on the field of the Galactic bulge cluster NGC 6558. A total of 78 variables was found in the field of the cluster. Many of these variables are included in the Catalogue of Variable Stars in Galactic Globular Clusters (Clement et al. 2001), OGLE or Gaia-DR3 data releases. A membership analysis based on the proper motions of Gaia-DR3 revealed that many of these variables do not belong to the cluster. We employed the data from the aforementioned surveys and our own data in the VI photometric system to estimate the periods, which along with the light curves morphology and position in a deferentially dereddened colour-magnitude diagram(CMD), help classifying the variable types. Two new member variables were found; an eclipsing binary (V18) and a semi-regular SR/L (V19). In the end we conclude that only 9 variables are likely cluster members. Member variables were used to discuss the mean metallicity and distance of the parental cluster and find the average values.

Employing \emph{VI} images of NGC 2419 acquired over 17 years, light curves for most of the known variables in the field of the cluster are produced. A cluster membership analysis for about 3100 stars in the cluster field with proper motions from $Gaia$-DR3, revealed the presence of member stars as far as 140 pc from the cluster center and enabled the construction of a cleaner CMD free of field stars. It was found that RRab and RRc stars share the inter-order region in the instability strip, which is unusual for OoII clusters. Theoretical considerations confirm that Pop II cepheids are descendants of extreme ZAHB blue tail stars with very thin envelopes of about 10\% of the total mass. Member RR Lyrae stars were employed to calculate independent estimates of the mean cluster metallicity and distance; we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UV}= -1.90 \pm 0.27$ and $D=86.3 \pm 5.0$ kpc from the RRab and [Fe/H]$_{\rm UV}= -1.88 \pm 0.30$ and $D=83.1 \pm 8.1$ kpc from the RRc light curves., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

Improved polarization measurements at frequencies below 70 GHz with degree-level angular resolution are crucial for advancing our understanding of the Galactic synchrotron radiation and the potential polarized anomalous microwave emission and ultimately benefiting the detection of primordial $B$ modes. In this study, we present sensitivity-improved 40 GHz polarization maps obtained by combining the CLASS 40 GHz and WMAP $Q$-band data through a weighted average in the harmonic domain. The decision to include WMAP $Q$-band data stems from similarities in the bandpasses. Leveraging the accurate large-scale measurements from WMAP $Q$ band and the high-sensitivity information from CLASS 40 GHz band at intermediate scales, the noise level at $\ell\in[30, 100]$ is reduced by a factor of $2-3$ in the map space. A pixel domain analysis of the polarized synchrotron spectral index ($\beta_s$) using WMAP $K$ band and the combined maps (mean and 16/84th percentile across the $\beta_s$ map: $-3.08_{-0.20}^{+0.20}$) reveals a stronger preference for spatial variation (PTE for a uniform $\beta_s$ hypothesis smaller than 0.001) than the results obtained using WMAP $K$ and $Ka$ bands ($-3.08_{-0.14}^{+0.14}$). The cross-power spectra of the combined maps follow the same trend as other low-frequency data, and validation through simulations indicates negligible bias introduced by the combination method (sub-percent level in the power spectra). Due to technological needs, nanoscale heat management, energy conversion and quantum thermodynamics have become key areas of research, putting heat pumps and nanomotors center stage. The treatment of these particular systems often requires the use of adiabatic expansions in terms of the frequency of the external driving or the velocity of some classical degree of freedom. However, due to the difficulty of getting the expressions, most works have only explored first-order terms. Despite this, adiabatic expansions have allowed the study of intriguing phenomena such as adiabatic quantum pumps and motors, or electronic friction. Here, we use nonequilibrium Green's functions, within a Schwinger-Keldysh approach, to develop second-order expressions for the energy, heat, and charge currents. We illustrate, through two simple models, how the obtained formulas produce physically consistent results, and allow for the thermodynamic study of unexplored phenomena, such as second-order monoparametric pumping.

For robots to interact socially, they must interpret human intentions and anticipate their potential outcomes accurately. This is particularly important for social robots designed for human care, which may face potentially dangerous situations for people, such as unseen obstacles in their way, that should be avoided. This paper explores the Artificial Theory of Mind (ATM) approach to inferring and interpreting human intentions. We propose an algorithm that detects risky situations for humans, selecting a robot action that removes the danger in real time. We use the simulation-based approach to ATM and adopt the 'like-me' policy to assign intentions and actions to people. Using this strategy, the robot can detect and act with a high rate of success under time-constrained situations. The algorithm has been implemented as part of an existing robotics cognitive architecture and tested in simulation scenarios. I provide a model of rational inattention with heterogeneity and prove it is observationally equivalent to a state-dependent stochastic choice model subject to attention costs. I demonstrate that additive separability of unobservable heterogeneity, together with an independence assumption, suffice for the empirical model to admit a representative agent. Using conditional probabilities, I show how to identify: how covariates affect the desirability of goods, (a measure of) welfare, factual changes in welfare, and bounds on counterfactual market shares.

A six-night optical turbulence monitoring campaign has been carried at Cerro Paranal observatory in February and March, 2023 to facilitate the development and characterisation of two novel atmospheric site monitoring instruments - the ring-image next generation scintillation sensor (RINGSS) and 24-hour Shack Hartmann image motion monitor (24hSHIMM) in the context of providing optical turbulence monitoring support for upcoming 20-40m telescopes. Alongside these two instruments, the well-characterised Stereo-SCIDAR and 2016-MASS-DIMM were operated throughout the campaign to provide data for comparison. All instruments obtain estimates of optical turbulence profiles through statistical analysis of intensity and wavefront angle-of-arrival fluctuations from observations of stars. Contemporaneous measurements of the integrated turbulence parameters are compared and the ratios, bias, unbiased root mean square error and correlation of results from each instrument assessed. Strong agreement was observed in measurements of seeing, free atmosphere seeing and coherence time. Less correlation is seen for isoplanatic angle, although the median values agree well. Median turbulence parameters are further compared against long-term monitoring data from Paranal instruments. Profiles from the three small-telescope instruments are compared with the 100-layer profile from the stereo-SCIDAR. It is found that the RINGSS and SHIMM offer improved accuracy in characterisation of the vertical optical turbulence profile over the MASS-DIMM. Finally, the first results of continuous optical turbulence monitoring at Paranal are presented which show a strong diurnal variation and predictable trend in the seeing. The stability of integrators dealing with high order Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs) is a major issue. The usual procedures give rise to instabilities that are not predicted by the usual linear analysis, rendering the common checks (developed for ODEs) unusable. The appearance of these difficult-toexplain and unexpected problems leads to methods that arise heavy numerical damping for avoiding them. This has the undesired consequences of lack of convergence of the methods, along with a need of smaller stepsizes. In this paper a new approach is presented. The algorithm presented here allows us to avoid the interference of the constraints in the integration, thus allowing the linear criteria to be applied. In order to do so, the integrator is applied to a set of instantaneous minimal coordinates that are obtained through the application of the null space. The new approach can be utilized along with any integration method. Some experiments using the Newmark method have been carried out, which validate the methodology and also show that the method behaves in a predictable way if one considers linear stability criteria.

The method of the lower deformation energy has been successfully used for the synthesis of mechanisms for quite a while. It has shown to be a versatile, yet powerful method for assisting in the design of mechanisms. Until now, most of the implementations of this method used the dimensions of the mechanism as the synthesis variables, which has some advantages and some drawbacks. For example, the assembly configuration is not taken into account in the optimization process, and this means that the same initial configuration is used when computing the deformed positions in each synthesis point. This translates into a reduction of the total search space. A possible solution to this problem is the use of a set of initial coordinates as variables for the synthesis, which has been successfully applied to other methods. This also has some additional advantages, such as the fact that any generated mechanism can be assembled. Another advantage is that the fixed joint locations are also included in the optimization at no additional cost. But the change from dimensions to initial coordinates means a reformulation of the optimization problem when using derivatives if one wants them to be analytically derived. This paper tackles this reformulation, along with a proper comparison of the use of both alternatives using sequential quadratic programming methods. In order to do so, some examples are developed and studied.

The deformed energy method has shown to be a good option for dimensional synthesis of mechanisms. In this paper the introduction of some new features to such approach is proposed. First, constraints fixing dimensions of certain links are introduced in the error function of the synthesis problem. Second, requirements on distances between determinate nodes are included in the error function for the analysis of the deformed position problem. Both the overall synthesis error function and the inner analysis error function are optimized using a Sequential Quadratic Problem (SQP) approach. This also reduces the probability of branch or circuit defects. In the case of the inner function analytical derivatives are used, while in the synthesis optimization approximate derivatives have been introduced. Furthermore, constraints are analyzed under two formulations, the Euclidean distance and an alternative approach that uses the previous raised to the power of two. The latter approach is often used in kinematics, and simplifies the computation of derivatives. Some examples are provided to show the convergence order of the error function and the fulfilment of the constraints in both formulations studied under different topological situations or achieved energy levels.

Directed transport is a key concept for many ongoing applications including nanoscale heat management, current rectification, source protection, and energy harvesting. Within the context of quantum transport, we here explore the use of nonlinear effects introduced by current-induced forces (CIFs) as a practical way to effectively break charge and heat transport reciprocities. In particular, we consider a simple model consisting of a mobile quantum dot (QD) coupled to two leads, where the charge (or heat) current develops an asymmetric behavior under inversion of voltage (or temperature) bias, thereby turning the system into a quantum diode (or quantum thermal diode). Furthermore, we find multiple stable positions for the QD and we show how the extraction of useful work is possible by modulating the nonequilibrium sources along well-established hysteresis loops. Finally, we explore a particular case where the nonlinearity of the CIFs can be exploited to pump heat or charge, even for systems that preserve inversion symmetry. This counterintuitive result is attributed to a spontaneous breaking of the inversion symmetry due to the intrinsic system's dynamics., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The sky-averaged cosmological 21 cm signal can improve our understanding of the evolution of the early Universe from the Dark Age to the end of the Epoch of Reionization. Although the EDGES experiment reported an absorption profile of this signal, there have been concerns about the plausibility of these results, motivating independent validation experiments. One of these initiatives is the Mapper of the IGM Spin Temperature (MIST), which is planned to be deployed at different remote locations around the world. One of its key features is that it seeks to comprehensively compensate for systematic uncertainties through detailed modeling and characterization of its different instrumental subsystems, particularly its antenna. Here we propose a novel optimizing scheme which can be used to design an antenna applied to MIST, improving bandwidth, return loss, and beam chromaticity. This new procedure combines the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with a commercial electromagnetic simulation software (HFSS). We improved the performance of two antenna models: a rectangular blade antenna, similar to the one used in the EDGES experiment, and a trapezoidal bow-tie antenna. Although the performance of both antennas improved after applying our optimization method, we found that our bow-tie model outperforms the blade antenna by achieving lower reflection losses and beam chromaticity in the entire band of interest. Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are thin strips of graphene with unique properties due to their structure and nanometric dimensions. They stand out as basic components for the construction of different types of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), including some very promising sensors and pumps. However, various phenomena, such as unintended mechanical vibrations, can induce undesired electrical currents in these devices. Here, we take a quantum mechanical approach to analyze how currents induced by fluctuations (either thermal or of some other kind) in suspended GNRs contribute to the electric current. In particular, we study the pumping current induced by the adiabatic variation of the Hamiltonian of the system when a transverse vibration (flexural mode) of a GNR suspended over a gate is excited. Our theoretical approach and results provide useful tools and rules of thumb to understand and control the charge current induced by fluctuations in GNR-based NEMS, which is important for their applications in nanoscale sensors, pumps, and energy harvesting devices.
