Nine participants were interviewed about their experiences with unintentionally severe injury during engagement in nonsuicidal self-injury. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we identified four common themes among participants: (a) explosive affect prior to unintentional injury, (b) loss of control during unintentional injury, (c) unfamiliar method, and (d) consequences of unintentional injury. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Many school counselors experience difficulties in identifying and reporting suspected cases of emotional abuse. These difficulties are concerning, given the relatively high prevalence rates of emotional abuse. In this article, we discuss the definition of emotional abuse, review research on its prevalence and psychological correlates, and provide recommendations for reporting suspected cases. Attention is also given to the school counselor's role in training teachers/staff on emotional abuse issues and intervening with students who experience emotional abuse.

Children who witness intimate partner violence (IPV) often suffer a range of physical, behavioral, emotional, and familial consequences (Holt, Buckley, & Whelan, 2008). School counselors may be in a key position to implement prevention programs around this issue, identify children who have witnessed IPV, and to engage in intervention efforts. Thus, school counselors need increased knowledge about the impact of IPV on child witnesses. In addition to summarizing some research on the impact of IPV on child witnesses, the following article will discuss prevention and intervention efforts which school counselors can utilize to assist students in combating the deleterious effects of witnessing violence in the home.

The authors examined the relationship between stress, adaptive coping, and life satisfaction among college students who reported having a friend or family member with eating disorder symptomatology. A hierarchical regression confirmed the study's hypotheses. Higher stress was linked with less life satisfaction. After stress was controlled, plan coping had a beneficial influence on life satisfaction. College counselors can use these findings when choosing interventions for clients who are close to someone with an eating disorder.

The authors examined the relationship between avoidant and anxious attachment to God/Higher Power and bulimia symptoms among 599 female college student participants. After controlling for body mass index, the authors found a positive association between both attachment variables and bulimia. When entered together in a regression, anxious attachment to God/Higher Power had a stronger relationship with bulimia than did avoidant attachment to God/Higher Power. The authors discuss implications for college counseling.

The authors evaluated the effectiveness of a brief training intervention with graduate counseling students who used the HIRE (history, interest in change, reasons for engaging in the behavior, and exposure to risk; Buser & Buser, 2013b) model for the informal assessment of nonsuicidal self-injury. The intervention group demonstrated improvements in nonsuicidal assessment self-efficacy and assessment skill. Findings suggest that HIRE is an evidence-informed model for teaching nonsuicidal self-injury assessment.

Counselors (N = 911) reported the research skills needed for practice and subsequent research training needs. Findings indicate that counselors have a high need for research skills at work, but training needs differ significantly by counselor type. Recommendations include increasing emphasis on single-case design, survey design, and widely available data analysis tools.

Nine female participants shared their experiences of body satisfaction, spiritual beliefs, and the intersection of these domains. Using phenomenological inquiry, the authors identified 6 themes in participant interviews. The authors discuss ways in which this study extends previous research, in addition to providing suggestions for counseling practice.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) may be characterized as a process addiction for some individuals who self-injure. The authors review findings on the addictive features of NSSI, including compulsivity, loss of control, continued use despite negative consequences, and tolerance.

Food addiction among children is a concerning issue. Few empirical studies have examined the relevance of food addiction among pediatric samples, but emerging evidence suggests that some children experience their eating patterns as addictive. The present review will discuss the issue of food addiction among children, and will also attend to the related concepts of binge eating and obesity. Several family factors that have been implicated as contributing to problematic eating practices among children will be discussed, including family functioning, parental modeling, parental pressure, and the impact of low socioeconomic status. Finally, implications for counselors who work with families struggling with food addiction will be presented.

For this study, the researchers recruited a sample of college men and women (N = 874) and examined the relationships among nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in the past year, social self-efficacy, and two dimensions of interactional justice (IJ) from parents (specifically, interpersonal justice and informational justice). Results indicated that both dimensions of IJ were inversely associated with NSSI and, second, that social self-efficacy moderated both of these relationships. Clinical implications of these findings for family counselors are discussed. (Contains 2 figures.)

This study examined the experiences of counseling students in learning and applying the SCAMPER model for creative thinking. Counseling students from three universities (N = 54) participated in a training intervention on the SCAMPER model and applied the model in eight weekly task group experiences. Participants' journals, which were completed after each group meeting, were analyzed using qualitative methods. Three themes emerged: a) SCAMPER model as a method to "stretch our thinking"; b) value of "structured creativity"; and c) shifting from "right or wrong"; application to flexibility and "flow." Implications for the training of counseling students in creative methods are discussed.

School counselors play an important role in identifying and intervening with students struggling with disordered eating (e.g., Bardick et al., 2004). Research has shown that American Indian adolescents report higher rates of certain disordered eating behaviors than other racial groups. The literature on the prevalence and etiology of disordered eating among American Indian adolescents can assist school counselors in gaining understanding of this mental health struggle and can contribute to school counseling prevention and intervention.

This manuscript considers the way that several creative media--including music, videography, visual arts, literature, drama, play, and altar-making--can be utilized in assisting the multifaceted grief process of clients. In particular, attention is given to the ability of creative media to enable clients to maintain a connection to the deceased, to access and express complicated emotions, and to gain confidence in authoring a new life story in the midst of loss.

Body dissatisfaction is a prevalent and concerning issue among college age women. Due to its strong association with eating pathology, identification of moderating variables is a crucial line of inquiry. The present study investigated the ability for an intrapersonal differentiation-of-self variable ("I" position) to attenuate the impact of body dissatisfaction on anorexia and bulimia symptoms among college women participants. Study findings indicated that an "I" position moderated the body dissatisfaction-bulimia relationship and the body dissatisfaction-anorexia relationship. These findings signified the protective influence of a high "I" position for women with high levels of body dissatisfaction. Research and therapeutic implications are discussed. Although religious and spiritual issues have emerged as areas of focus in counseling, very few scholars have explored the meaning and experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) clients who addressed their sexual and religious/spiritual identities in counseling. Using consensual qualitative research (CQR; Hill, 2012), the current study explores the perspectives of 12 LGB persons who sought counseling that involved religious/spiritual concerns. Four themes in participant interviews are identified, including (a) self-acceptance, (b) goals of counseling, (c) identification with counselor, and (d) counseling environment and relationship. We explored the relationship between four domains of differentiation of self and eating disorder symptoms among male college students. While all differentiation domains were significantly correlated with eating disorder symptoms, only two domains were statistically significant in a regression.
