Abstract

In this letter, we describe the stabilization of indium antimonide (InSb) in the high-pressure orthorhombic phase (InSb-III) at ambient conditions. Until now, InSb-III has only been observed above 9 GPa, or at around 3 GPa as a metastable structure during the phase transition from cubic zinc blende (InSb-I) to orthorhombic InSb-IV. The crystalline phase transition from InSb-I to InSb-III was driven by an ultrashort, laser-generated, non-hydrostatic pressure pulse. The transition occurred in preferred orientations locked to the initial orientation of the InSb-I crystal, breaking the symmetry of the InSb-I cubic cell to form the InSb-III orthorhombic cell.

Abstract

A novel approach to implement and control electron injection into the accelerating phase of a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) is presented. It utilizes a wire, which is introduced into the flow of a supersonic gas jet creating shock waves and three regions of differing plasma electron density. If tailored appropriately, the laser plasma interaction takes place in three stages: Laser self-compression, electron injection and acceleration in the second plasma wave period. Compared to self-injection by wavebreaking of a nonlinear plasma wave in a constant density plasma, this scheme increases beam charge by up to one order of magnitude in the quasi-monoenergetic regime. Electron acceleration in the second plasma wave period reduces electron beam divergence by approximately 25 %, and the localized injection at the density downramps results in spectra with less than a few percent relative spread., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A coated hollow core microsphere is introduced as a novel target in ultra-intense laser-matter interaction experiments. In particular, it facilitates staged laser-driven proton acceleration by combining conventional target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA), power recycling of hot laterally spreading electrons and staging in a very simple and cheap target geometry. During TNSA of protons from one area of the sphere surface, laterally spreading hot electrons form a charge wave. Due to the spherical geometry, this wave refocuses on the opposite side of the sphere, where an opening has been laser micromachined. This leads to a strong transient charge separation field being set up there, which can post-accelerate those TNSA protons passing through the hole at the right time. Experimentally, the feasibility of using such targets is demonstrated. A redistribution is encountered in the experimental proton energy spectra, as predicted by particle-in-cell simulations and attributed to transient fields set up by oscillating currents on the sphere surface., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The excitation of plasma waves over a length of up to 8 centimeters is, for the first time, demon- strated using laser guiding of intense laser pulses through hydrogen filled glass capillary tubes. The plasma waves are diagnosed by spectral analysis of the transmitted laser radiation. The dependence of the spectral redshift, measured as a function of filling pressure, capillary tube length and incident laser energy, is in excellent agreement with simulation results. The longitudinal accelerating field inferred from the simulations is in the range 1 -10 GV/m.

Abstract

By tailoring the wavefront of the laser pulse used in a laser-wakefield accelerator, we show that the properties of the x-rays produced due to the electron beam's betatron oscillations in the plasma can be controlled. By creating a wavefront with coma, we find that the critical energy of the synchrotron-like x-ray spectrum can be significantly increased. The coma does not substantially change the energy of the electron beam, but does increase its divergence and produces an energy-dependent exit angle, indicating that changes in the x-ray spectrum are due to an increase in the electron beam's oscillation amplitude within the wakefield., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Appl. Abstract

Laser wakefield electron acceleration in the blow-out regime and the associated betatron X-rayradiation were investigated experimentally as a function of the plasma density in a configuration where the laser is guided. Dielectric capillary tubes were employed to assist the laser keeping self-focused over a long distance by collecting the laser energy around its central focal spot. With a 40 fs, 16 TW pulsed laser, electron bunches with tens of pC charge were measured to be accelerated to an energy up to 300 MeV, accompanied by X-ray emission with a peak brightness of the order of 10 21 ph/s/mm 2 / mrad 2 /0.1%BW. Electron trapping and acceleration were studied using the emitted X-ray beamdistribution to map the acceleration process; the number of betatron oscillations performed by theelectrons was inferred from the correlation between measured X-ray fluence and beam charge. A studyof the stability of electron and X-ray generation suggests that the fluctuation of X-ray emission can be reduced by stabilizing the beam charge. Abstract

This paper describes a method for robust streaming of combined MPEG-2 audio/video content over in-home wireless networks. We make use of currently used content distribution formats and network protocols. The transmitted bit-rate is constantly adapted to the available network bandwidth, such that audio and video artifacts caused by packet loss are avoided. Bit-rate adaptation is achieved by using a packet scheduling technique called I-Frame Delay (IFD), which performs priority-based frame dropping upon insufficient bandwidth. We show an implementation using RTP and an implementation using TCP. Measurements on a real-life demonstrator set-up demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract

A laser pulse traveling through a plasma can excite large amplitude plasma waves that can be used to accelerate relativistic electron beams in a very short distance—a technique called laser wakefield acceleration. Many wakefield acceleration experiments rely on the process of wave breaking, or self-injection, to inject electrons into the wave, while other injection techniques rely on operation without self-injection. We present an experimental study into the parameters, including the pulse energy, focal spot quality, and pulse power, that determine whether or not a wakefield accelerator will self-inject. By taking into account the processes of self-focusing and pulse compression we are able to extend a previously described theoretical model, where the minimum bubble size k p r b required for trapping is not constant but varies slowly with density and find excellent agreement with this model.

Abstract

Laser wakefield is generated inside capillary tubes in order to study the conditions for self-injection of plasma electrons and their acceleration inside a large domain of parameters. Dielectric capillary tubes are employed to guide the laser pulse and collect laser energy around the central focal spot to favor laser propagation. Electrons are observed to be self-injected and accelerated to the 200 MeV range when a peak laser intensity as low as 5×1017 W/cm2 is used. X-rays emitted by betatron radiation constitute a precise diagnostic of the electron acceleration process. Furthermore, the peak brightness of X-rays is increased to 1021 ph/s/mm2/mrad2/0.1%BW when the laser pulse is focused to 5×1018 W/cm2, which is about 30 times higher than the value obtained by using a 2 mm gas jet. Abstract

The FemtoMAX beamline facilitates studies of the structural dynamics of materials. Such studies are of fundamental importance for key scientific problems related to programming materials using light, enabling new storage media and new manufacturing techniques, obtaining sustainable energy by mimicking photosynthesis, and gleaning insights into chemical and biological functional dynamics. The FemtoMAX beamline utilizes the MAX IV linear accelerator as an electron source. The photon bursts have a pulse length of 100 fs, which is on the timescale of molecular vibrations, and have wavelengths matching interatomic distances (Å). The uniqueness of the beamline has called for special beamline components. This paper presents the beamline design including ultrasensitive X-ray beam-position monitors based on thin Ce:YAG screens, efficient harmonic separators and novel timing tools.
