Context. Highly excited molecular hydrogen H2 has been observed in many regions of shocked molecular gas. A recently published $K$-band spectrum of Herbig-Haro 7 (HH7) contains several vibration-rotation lines of H2 from highly excited energy levels that have not been detected elsewhere, including a line at 2.179 $\mu$m identified as arising from the $v$=2 $J$=29 level, which lies above the dissociation limit of H2. One emission line at 2.104 $\mu$m in this spectrum was unidentified. Aims. We aim to complete the analysis of the spectrum of HH7 by including previously missing molecular data that have been recently computed. Methods. We re-analysed the $K$-band spectrum, emphasising the physics of quasi-bound upper levels that can produce infrared emission lines in the $K$ band. Results. We confirm the identification of the $2-1$ $S$(27) line at 2.1785 $\mu$m and identify the line at 2.1042 $\mu$m as due to the 1-0 $S$(29) transition of H2, whose upper level energy is also higher than the dissociation limit. This latter identification, its column density, and the energy of its upper level further substantiate the existence of a hot thermal component at 5000 K in the HH7 environment.} Conclusion. The presence of the newly identified $1-0$ $S$(29) line, whose quasi-bound upper level ($v$=1, $J$=31) has a significant spontaneous dissociation probability, shows that dissociation of H2 is occurring. We report the most detailed $1-3$ GHz radio continuum emission map of the nearest region of massive star formation, the Carina Nebula. As part of a large program with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have covered $\sim$ 12 deg$^2$, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$ 16 arcsec, representing the largest and most complete map of the radio continuum to date. Our continuum map shows a spectacular and complex distribution of emission across the nebula, with multiple structures such as filaments, shells, and fronts across a wide range of size scales. The ionization fronts have advanced far into the southern and northern region of the Galactic Plane, as fronts are clearly detected at distances $\sim$ 80 pc from the stellar clusters in the center. We estimated an ionization photon luminosity $Q_\mathrm{H}=(7.8 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{50}$ s$^{-1}$ which corresponds to $\sim 85\%$ of the total value obtained from stellar population studies. Thus, approximately $15\%$ of the ionizing flux has escaped from the nebula into the diffuse Galactic Interstellar Medium. Comparison between radio continuum and the hydrogen atomic and molecular gas maps offers a clear view of the bipolar outflow driven by the energy released by the massive stellar clusters that also affects the fraction of molecular gas across the nebula. Comparison between 8$\mu$m and 70$\mu$m emission maps and the radio continuum reveals how the hot gas permeates through the molecular cloud, shapes the material into features such as pillars, small shells and arc-like structures, and ultimately, escapes., Comment: 18 pages, 16 Figures, 1 appendix

We present ALMA high spatial resolution observations towards two star forming regions located in one of the most extreme zones of star formation in the Galaxy, the Carina Nebula. One region is located at the center of the nebula and is severally affected by the stellar feedback from high-mass stars, while the other region is located further south and is less disturbed by the massive star clusters. We found that the region at the center of the nebula is forming less but more massive cores than the region located in the south, suggesting that the level of stellar feedback effectively influence the fragmentation process in clumps. Lines such as HCN, HCO$^{+}$ and SiO show abundant and complex gas distributions in both regions, confirming the presence of ionization and shock fronts. Jeans analysis suggests that the observed core masses in the region less affected by the massive stars are consistent with thermal fragmentation, but turbulent Jeans fragmentation might explain the high masses of the cores identified in the region in the center of Carina. Consistently, two different analyses in the HCO$^{+}$ line provided evidence for a higher level of turbulence in the gas more affected by the stellar feedback. The gas column density probability functions, N-PDFs, show log-normal shapes with clear transitions to power law regimes. We observed a wider N-PDF in the region at the center of the nebula, which provides further evidence for a higher level of turbulence in the material with a higher level of massive stellar feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal the 20th of January 2020

We present observations of the Trumpler 14/Carina I region carried out using the Stratospheric Terahertz Observatory 2 (STO2). The Trumpler 14/Carina I region is in the west part of the Carina Nebula Complex, which is one of the most extreme star-forming regions in the Milky Way. We observed Trumpler 14/Carina I in the 158 $\mu$m transition of [C\,{\sc ii}] with a spatial resolution of 48$''$ and a velocity resolution of 0.17 km s$^{-1}$. The observations cover a 0.25$^\circ$ by 0.28$^\circ$ area with central position {\it l} = 297.34$^\circ$, {\it b} = -0.60$^\circ$. The kinematics show that bright [C\,{\sc ii}] structures are spatially and spectrally correlated with the surfaces of CO clouds, tracing the photodissociation region and ionization front of each molecular cloud. Along 7 lines of sight that traverse Tr 14 into the dark ridge to the southwest, we find that the [C\,{\sc ii}] luminosity from the HII region is 3.7 times that from the PDR. In same los we find in the PDRs an average ratio of 1:4.1:5.6 for the mass in atomic gas:dark-CO gas: molecular gas traced by CO. Comparing multiple gas tracers including HI 21cm, [C\,{\sc ii}], CO, and radio recombination lines, we find that the HII regions of the Carina Nebula Complex are well-described as HII regions with one-side freely expanding towards us, consistent with the champagne model of ionized gas evolution. The dispersal of the GMC in this region is dominated by EUV photoevaporation; the dispersal timescale is 20-30 Myr., Comment: ApJ accepted

We report the detection of near-infrared (NIR) [Fe II] (1.644 $\mu$m) and H$_{2}$ 1-0 S(1) (2.122 $\mu$m) line features associated with Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) in the first quadrant using two narrowband imaging surveys, UWIFE and UWISH2. Among the total of 79 SNRs fully covered by both surveys, we found 19 [Fe II]-emitting and 19 H$_{2}$-emitting SNRs, giving a detection rate of 24% for each. Eleven SNRs show both emission features. The detection rate of [Fe II] and H$_{2}$ peaks at the Galactic longitude ($l$) of $40^{\circ}$-$50^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$-$40^{\circ}$, respectively, and gradually decreases toward smaller/larger $l$. Five out of the eleven SNRs emitting both emission lines clearly show an "[Fe II]-H$_{2}$ reversal," where H$_{2}$ emission features are found outside the SNR boundary in [Fe II] emission. Our NIR spectroscopy shows that the H$_{2}$ emission originates from collisionally excited H$_{2}$ gas. The brightest SNR in both [Fe II] and H$_{2}$ emissions is W49B, contributing more than 70% and 50% of the total [Fe II] 1.644 $\mu$m ($2.0 \times 10^4$ L$_{\odot}$) and H$_{2}$ 2.122 $\mu$m ($1.2 \times 10^3$ L$_{\odot}$) luminosities of the detected SNRs. The total [Fe II] 1.644 $\mu$m luminosity of our Galaxy is a few times smaller than that expected from the SN rate using the correlation found in nearby starburst galaxies. We present a morphological and physical analysis of a Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) using the carbon monoxide isotopologues ($^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O $^{3}P_{2}\rightarrow$ $^{3}P_{1}$) survey of the Galactic Plane (Mopra CO Southern Galactic Plane Survey), supplemented with neutral carbon maps from the HEAT telescope in Antarctica. The giant molecular cloud structure (hereinafter the ring) covers the sky region $332^\circ$ < $\ell$ < $333^\circ$ and $\mathit{b}$ = $\pm 0.5^\circ$ (hereinafter the G332 region). The mass of the ring and its distance are determined to be respectively ~2$\times10^{5}\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and ~3.7 kpc from Sun. The dark molecular gas fraction, estimated from the $^{13}$CO and [CI] lines, is $\sim17\%$ for a CO T$_{\mathrm{ex}}$ between [10,20 K]. Comparing the [CI] integrated intensity and N(H$_{2}$) traced by $^{13}$CO and $^{12}$CO, we define an X$\mathrm{_{CI}^{809}}$ factor, analogous to the usual X$_{\mathrm{co}}$, through the [CI] line. X$\mathrm{_{CI}^{809}}$ ranges between [1.8,2.0]$\times10^{21}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{K}^{-1}\mathrm{km}^{-1}\mathrm{s}$. We examined local variation in X$_{\mathrm{co}}$ and T$_{\mathrm{ex}}$ across the cloud, and find in regions where the star formation activity is not in an advanced state, an increase in the mean and dispersion of the X$_{\mathrm{co}}$ factor as the excitation temperature decreases. We present a catalogue of C$^{18}$O clumps within the cloud. The star formation (SF) activity ongoing in the cloud shows a correlation with T$_{\mathrm{ex}}$, [CI] and CO emissions, and anti-correlation with X$_{\mathrm{co}}$, suggesting a North-South spatial gradient in the SF activity. We propose a method to disentangle dust emission across the Galaxy, using HI and $^{13}$CO data. Using the Mopra telescope, we have targeted 61 regions in the Carina Nebula, covering an area of 1.5 square degrees, of bright and compact 870 $\mu$m dust continuum emission for molecular line emission from a host of 16 spectral lines at 3mm, including several dense gas tracers. We found that the clumps detected in Carina in general have in average higher temperatures (27 K compared to 21 K), and lower masses (214 M$_\odot$ compared to 508 M$_\odot$) than clumps located at a similar distance to us in the Galactic Plane. We compare the properties of the molecular line emission of these clumps with the MALT90 survey, finding that the detection rates of the molecular lines are similar to MALT90 clumps that are classified as PDRs. However, most of the clumps located within 10' of $\eta$ Carina have little molecular line emission detected in our observations. Given the lack of maser detection in the Carina region, we also compared the properties the clumps in Carina to those of Galactic clumps associated with 6.7-GHz methanol masers. We found that the clumps in Carina are warmer, less massive, and show less emission from the four most commonly detected molecules, HCO$^+$, N$_2$H$^+$, HCN, and HNC, compared to clumps associated with masers in the Galactic Plane. Overall our results are consistent with the scenario in which the high radiation field of $\eta$ Carina is dramatically affecting its local environment, and therefore the chemical composition of the dense clumps., Comment: 16 Pages, 16 Figures, 4 Tables

Using high-resolution data of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO ($J$=1-0}) line emission from The Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey in conjunction with neutral hydrogen observations from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) and mid-infrared Spitzer data, we have explored the large-scale environment of the supernova remnant Kes 41. On the basis of these data, we identified for the first time the parent cloud of Kes 41 in its whole extension and surveyed the HII regions, masers, and the population of massive young stellar objects in the cloud. The whole unveiled giant cloud, located at the kinematic distance of 12.0 $\pm$ 3.6 kpc, whose average total mass and size are $\sim$10-30 $\times10^5$ M$_\odot$ and $\sim$$26^{\prime}$, also shines in $\gamma$-rays, as revealed by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite. We determined a high average proton density $\sim$500-1000~cm$^{-3}$ in the large molecular complex, of which protons from the neutral atomic and ionised gases comprise only $\sim$15%., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 Tables. Kes 41 is among the Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) proposed to be physically linked to $\gamma$-ray emission at GeV energies. Although not conclusively, the nature of the $\gamma$-ray photons has been explained by means of hadronic collisions of particles accelerated at the SNR blast wave with target protons in an adjacent molecular clump. We performed an analysis of Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data of about 9 years to assess the origin of the $\gamma$-ray emission. To investigate this matter we also used spectral modelling constraints from the physical properties of the interstellar medium towards the $\gamma$-ray emitting region along with a revised radio continuum spectrum of Kes 41 ($\alpha = -0.54 \pm 0.10$, $S\propto\nu^{\alpha}$). We demonstrated that the $\gamma$-ray fluxes in the GeV range can be explained through bremsstrahlung emission from electrons interacting with the surrounding medium. We also consider a model in which the emission is produced by pion-decay after hadronic collisions, and confirmed that this mechanism cannot be excluded., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 Tables. A collision between two molecular clouds is one possible candidate for high-mass star formation. The HII region RCW 36, located in the Vela molecular ridge, contains a young star cluster with two O-type stars. We present new CO observations of RCW 36 with NANTEN2, Mopra, and ASTE using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 2-1, 3-2) and $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1) line emissions. We have discovered two molecular clouds lying at the velocities $V_\mathrm{LSR} \sim$5.5 and 9 km s$^{-1}$. Both clouds are likely to be physically associated with the star cluster, as verified by the good spatial correspondence among the two clouds, infrared filaments, and the star cluster. We also found a high intensity ratio of $\sim$0.6-1.2 for CO $J$ = 3-2 / 1-0 toward both clouds, indicating that the gas temperature has been increased due to heating by the O-type stars. We propose that the O-type stars in RCW 36 were formed by a collision between the two clouds, with a relative velocity separation of 5 km s$^{-1}$. The complementary spatial distributions and the velocity separation of the two clouds are in good agreement with observational signatures expected for O-type star formation triggered by a cloud-cloud collision. We also found a displacement between the complementary spatial distributions of the two clouds, which we estimate to be 0.3 pc assuming the collision angle to be 45$^{\circ}$ relative to the line-of-sight. We estimate the collision timescale to be $\sim$10$^5$ yr. It is probable that the cluster age by Ellerbroek et al. (2013b) is dominated by the low-mass members which were not formed under the triggering by cloud-cloud collision, and that the O-type stars in the center of the cluster are explained by the collisional triggering independently from the low-mass star formation., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, and 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report the results of broadband (0.95--2.46 $\mu$m) near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. Using a clump-finding algorithm in two-dimensional dispersed images, we identify 63 "knots" from eight slit positions and derive their spectroscopic properties. All of the knots emit [Fe II] lines together with other ionic forbidden lines of heavy elements, and some of them also emit H and He lines. We identify 46 emission line features in total from the 63 knots and measure their fluxes and radial velocities. The results of our analyses of the emission line features based on principal component analysis show that the knots can be classified into three groups: (1) He-rich, (2) S-rich, and (3) Fe-rich knots. The He-rich knots have relatively small, $\lesssim 200~{\rm km~s}^{-1}$, line-of-sight speeds and radiate strong He I and [Fe II] lines resembling closely optical quasi-stationary flocculi of circumstellar medium, while the S-rich knots show strong lines from O-burning material with large radial velocities up to $\sim 2000~{\rm km~s}^{-1}$ indicating that they are supernova ejecta material known as fast-moving knots. The Fe-rich knots also have large radial velocities but show no lines from O-burning material. We discuss the origin of the Fe-rich knots and conclude that they are most likely "pure" Fe ejecta synthesized in the innermost region during the supernova explosion. The comparison of [Fe II] images with other waveband images shows that these dense Fe ejecta are mainly distributed along the southwestern shell just outside the unshocked $^{44}$Ti in the interior, supporting the presence of unshocked Fe associated with $^{44}$Ti., Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables; accepted in ApJ on 2017 Feb. 11

We present 12 mm Mopra observations of the dense (>10^3 cm^-3 ) molecular gas towards the north-east (NE) of the W28 supernova remnant (SNR). This cloud is spatially well-matched to the TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1801-233 and is known to be a SNR-molecular cloud interaction region. Shock-disruption is evident from broad NH3 (1,1) spectral line-widths in regions towards the W28 SNR, while strong detections of spatially-extended NH3(3,3), NH3(4,4) and NH3(6,6) inversion emission towards the cloud strengthen the case for the existence of high temperatures within the cloud. Velocity dispersion measurements and NH3(n,n)/(1,1) ratio maps, where n=2, 3, 4 and 6, indicate that the source of disruption is from the side of the cloud nearest to the W28 SNR, suggesting that it is the source of cloud-disruption. Towards part of the cloud, the ratio of ortho to para-NH3 is observed to exceed 2, suggesting gas-phase NH3 enrichment due to NH3 liberation from dust grain mantles. The measured NH3 abundance with respect to H2 is ~(1.2+/-0.5)*10^-9, which is not high, as might be expected for a hot, dense molecular cloud enriched by sublimated grain-surface molecules. We present spectral data cubes of the [CI] 809GHz, 12CO 115GHz, 13CO 110GHz and HI 1.4GHz line emission from an 1 square degree region along the l = 328{\deg} (G328) sightline in the Galactic Plane. Emission arises principally from gas in three spiral arm crossings along the sight line. The distribution of the emission in the CO and [CI] lines is found to be similar, with the [CI] slightly more extended, and both are enveloped in extensive HI. Spectral line ratios per voxel in the data cubes are found to be similar across the entire extent of the Galaxy. However, towards the edges of the molecular clouds the [CI]/13CO and 12CO/13CO line ratios rise by ~50%, and the [CI]/HI ratio falls by ~10$%. We attribute this to these sightlines passing predominantly through the surfaces of photodissociation regions (PDRs), where the carbon is found mainly as C or C+, while the H2 is mostly molecular, and the proportion of atomic gas also increases. We undertake modelling of the PDR emission from low density molecular clouds excited by average interstellar radiation fields and cosmic-ray ionization to quantify this comparison, finding that depletion of sulfur and reduced PAH abundance is needed to match line fluxes and ratios. Circinus X-1 exhibited a bright X-ray flare in late 2013. Follow-up observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton from 40 to 80 days after the flare reveal a bright X-ray light echo in the form of four well-defined rings with radii from 5 to 13 arcminutes, growing in radius with time. The large fluence of the flare and the large column density of interstellar dust towards Circinus X-1 make this the largest and brightest set of rings from an X-ray light echo observed to date. By deconvolving the radial intensity profile of the echo with the MAXI X-ray lightcurve of the flare we reconstruct the dust distribution towards Circinus X-1 into four distinct dust concentrations. By comparing the peak in scattering intensity with the peak intensity in CO maps of molecular clouds from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey we identify the two innermost rings with clouds at radial velocity ~ -74 km/s and ~ -81 km/s, respectively. We identify a prominent band of foreground photoelectric absorption with a lane of CO gas at ~ -32 km/s. From the association of the rings with individual CO clouds we determine the kinematic distance to Circinus X-1 to be $D_{Cir X-1} = 9.4^{+0.8}_{-1.0}$ kpc. This distance rules out earlier claims of a distance around 4 kpc, implies that Circinus X-1 is a frequent super-Eddington source, and places a lower limit of $\Gamma \gtrsim 22$ on the Lorentz factor and an upper limit of $\theta_{jet} \lesssim 3^{\circ}$ on the jet viewing angle., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, Astrophysical Journal, in print

We present observations of the first ten degrees of longitude in the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the southern Galactic plane (Burton et al. 2013), covering Galactic longitude l = 320-330{\deg} and latitude b = $\pm$0.5{\deg}, and l = 327-330{\deg}, b = +0.5-1.0{\deg}. These data have been taken at 35 arc sec spatial resolution and 0.1 km/s spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular clouds and gas of the southern Galactic plane in the 109-115 GHz J = 1-0 transitions of 12CO, 13CO, C18O and C17O. We present the first results from the MALT-45 (Millimetre Astronomer's Legacy Team - 45 GHz) Galactic Plane survey. We have observed 5 square-degrees ($l = 330 - 335$, $b = \pm0.5$) for spectral lines in the 7 mm band (42-44 and 48-49 GHz), including $\text{CS}$ $(1-0)$, class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers in the $7(0,7)-6(1,6)$ $\text{A}^{+}$ transition and $\text{SiO}$ $(1-0)$ $v=0,1,2,3$. MALT-45 is the first unbiased, large-scale, sensitive spectral line survey in this frequency range. In this paper, we present data from the survey as well as a few intriguing results; rigorous analyses of these science cases are reserved for future publications. Across the survey region, we detected 77 class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers, of which 58 are new detections, along with many sites of thermal and maser $\text{SiO}$ emission and thermal $\text{CS}$. We found that 35 class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers were associated with the published locations of class II $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$, $\text{H}_2\text{O}$ and $\text{OH}$ masers but 42 have no known masers within 60 arcsec. We compared the MALT-45 $\text{CS}$ with $\text{NH}_3$ (1,1) to reveal regions of $\text{CS}$ depletion and high opacity, as well as evolved star-forming regions with a high ratio of $\text{CS}$ to $\text{NH}_3$. All $\text{SiO}$ masers are new detections, and appear to be associated with evolved stars from the $\it{Spitzer}$ Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE). Generally, within $\text{SiO}$ regions of multiple vibrational modes, the intensity decreases as $v=1,2,3$, but there are a few exceptions where $v=2$ is stronger than $v=1$., Comment: Accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on 2015 January 23. We present new detections of cyanodiacetylene (HC$_{5}$N) toward hot molecular cores, observed with the Tidbinbilla 34 m radio telescope (DSS-34). In a sample of 79 hot molecular cores, HC$_{5}$N was detected towards 35. These results are counter to the expectation that long chain cyanopolyynes, such as HC$_{5}$N, are not typically found in hot molecular cores, unlike their shorter chain counterpart HC$_{3}$N. However it is consistent with recent models which suggest HC$_{5}$N may exist for a limited period during the evolution of hot molecular cores., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We present a millimetre-wave site characterisation for the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) based on nearly 9 years of data from a seeing monitor operating at this facility. The seeing monitor, which measures the phase fluctuations in the signal from a geosynchronous satellite over a 230\,m baseline caused by water vapour fluctuations along their sight lines, provides an almost gapless record since 2005, with high time resolution. We determine the root mean square (rms) of the path length variations as a function of time of day and season. Under the assumption of the "frozen screen" hypothesis, we also determine the Kolomogorov exponent, $\alpha$, for the turbulence and the phase screen speed. From these, we determine the millimetre-wave seeing at $\lambda = 3.3$\,mm. Based on the magnitude of the rms path length variations, we estimate the expected fraction of the available observing time when interferometry could be successfully conducted using the ATCA, as a function of observing frequency and antenna baseline, for the time of day and the season. We also estimate the corresponding observing time fractions when using the water vapour radiometers (WVRs) installed on the ATCA in order to correct for the phase fluctuations occurring during the measurement of an astronomical source.

We present results from a Mopra 7mm-wavelength survey that targeted the dense gas-tracing CS(1-0) transition towards the young gamma-ray-bright supernova remnant, RXJ1713.7-3946 (SNR G347.3-0.5). In a hadronic gamma-ray emission scenario, where cosmic ray protons interact with gas to produce the observed gamma-ray emission, the mass of potential cosmic ray target material is an important factor. We summarise newly-discovered dense gas components, towards Cores G and L, and Clumps N1, N2, N3 and T1, which have masses of 1-10^4 solar masses. We argue that these components are not likely to contribute significantly to gamma-ray emission in a hadronic gamma-ray emission scenario. This would be the case if RXJ1713.7-3946 were at either the currently favoured distance of ~1kpc or an alternate distance (as suggested in some previous studies) of ~6kpc. This survey also targeted the shock-tracing SiO molecule. Although no SiO emission corresponding to the RXJ1713.7-3946 shock was observed, vibrationally-excited SiO(1-0) maser emission was discovered towards what may be an evolved star. Observations taken one year apart confirmed a transient nature, since the intensity, line-width and central velocity of SiO(J=1-0,v=1,2) emission varied significantly., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

Massive young stellar objects (YSOs), like low-mass YSOs, are thought to be surrounded by optically thick envelopes and/or discs and are observed to have associated regions that produce polarized light at near-infrared wavelengths. These polarized regions are thought to be lower-density outflows along the polar axes of the YSO envelopes. Using the 0.2 arcsec spatial resolution of the Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer on the Hubble Space Telescope we are examining the structure of the envelopes and outflow regions of massive YSOs in star-forming regions within a few kpc of the Sun. Here we report on 2 micron polarimetry of Mon R2-IRS3, S140-IRS1, and AFGL 2591. All three sources contain YSOs with highly-polarized monopolar outflows, with Mon R2-IRS3 containing at least two YSOs in a small cluster. The central stars of all four YSOs are also polarized, with position angles perpendicular to the directions of the outflows. We infer that this polarization is due to scattering and absorption by aligned grains. We have modelled our observations of S140-IRS1 and AFGL 2591 as light scattered and absorbed both by spherical grains and by elongated grains that are aligned by magnetic fields. Models that best reproduce the observations have a substantial toroidal component to the magnetic field in the equatorial plane. Moreover, the toroidal magnetic field in the model that best fits AFGL 2591 extends a large fraction of the height of the model cavity, which is 10^5 au. We conclude that the massive YSOs in this study all show evidence of the presence of a substantial toroidal magnetic field., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. To be published in MNRAS

Observations of dense molecular gas towards the supernova remnants CTB 37A (G348.5+0.1) and G348.5-0.0 were carried out using the Mopra and Nanten2 radio telescopes. We present CO(2-1) and CS(1-0) emission maps of a region encompassing the CTB 37A TeV gamma-ray emission, HESS J1714-385, revealing regions of dense gas within associated molecular clouds. Some gas displays good overlap with gamma-ray emission, consistent with hadronic gamma-ray emission scenarios. Masses of gas towards the HESS J1714-385 TeV gamma-ray emission region were estimated, and were of the order of 10^3-10^4 solar masses. In the case of a purely hadronic origin for the gamma-ray emission, the cosmic ray flux enhancement is ~80-1100 times the local solar value. This enhancement factor and other considerations allow a discussion of the age of CTB 37A, which is consistent with ~10^4 yr., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

We have developed Water Vapour Radiometers (WVRs) for the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) that are capable of determining signal path length fluctuations by virtue of measuring small temperature fluctuations in the atmosphere using the 22.2 GHz water vapour line for each of the six antennae. By measuring the line of sight variations of the water vapour, the induced path excess and thus the phase delay can be estimated and corrections can then be applied during data reduction. This reduces decorrelation of the source signal. We demonstrate how this recovers the telescope's efficiency as well as how this improves the telescope's ability to use longer baselines at higher frequencies, thereby resulting in higher spatial resolution. The linewidth (sigma) - size (R) relationship has been extensively measured and analysed, in both the local ISM and in nearby normal galaxies. Generally, a power-law describes the relationship well with an index ranging from 0.2-0.6, now referred to as one of "Larson's Relationships." The nature of turbulence and star formation is considered to be intimately related to these relationships, so evaluating the sigma-R correlations in various environments is important for developing a comprehensive understanding of the ISM. We measure the sigma-R relationship in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galactic Centre using spectral line observations of the high density tracers N2H+, HCN, H13CN, and HCO+. We use dendrograms, which map the hierarchical nature of the position-position-velocity (PPV) data, to compute sigma and R of contiguous structures. The dispersions range from ~2-30 km/s in structures spanning sizes 2-40 pc, respectively. By performing Bayesian inference, we show that a power-law with exponent 0.3-1.1 can reasonably describe the sigma-R trend. We demonstrate that the derived sigma-R relationship is independent of the locations in the PPV dataset where sigma and R are measured. The uniformity in the sigma-R relationship suggests turbulence in the CMZ is driven on the large scales beyond >30 pc. We compare the CMZ sigma-R relationship to that measured in the Galactic molecular cloud Perseus. The exponents between the two systems are similar, suggestive of a connection between the turbulent properties within a cloud to its ambient medium. Yet, the velocity dispersion in the CMZ is systematically higher, resulting in a coefficient that is nearly five times larger. The systematic enhancement of turbulent velocities may be due to the combined effects of increased star formation activity, larger densities, and higher pressures relative to the local ISM., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) IC443 is one of the most studied core-collapse SNRs for its interaction with molecular clouds. However, the ambient molecular clouds with which IC443 is interacting have not been thoroughly studied and remain poorly understood. Using Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 14m telescope, we obtained fully sampled maps of ~ 1{\deg} \times 1{\deg} region toward IC443 in the 12CO J=1-0 and HCO+ J=1-0 lines. In addition to the previously known molecular clouds in the velocity range v_lsr = -6 to -1 km/s (-3 km/s clouds), our observations reveal two new ambient molecular cloud components: small (~ 1') bright clouds in v_lsr = -8 to -3 km/s (SCs), and diffuse clouds in v_lsr = +3 to +10 km/s (+5 km/s clouds). Our data also reveal the detailed kinematics of the shocked molecular gas in IC443, however the focus of this paper is the physical relationship between the shocked clumps and the ambient cloud components. We find strong evidence that the SCs are associated with the shocked clumps. This is supported by the positional coincidence of the SCs with shocked clumps and other tracers of shocks. Furthermore, the kinematic features of some shocked clumps suggest that these are the ablated material from the SCs upon the impact of the SNR shock. The SCs are interpreted as dense cores of parental molecular clouds that survived the destruction by the pre-supernova evolution of the progenitor star or its nearby stars. We propose that the expanding SNR shock is now impacting some of the remaining cores and the gas is being ablated and accelerated producing the shocked molecular gas. The morphology of the +5 km/s clouds suggests an association with IC443. The young X-ray and gamma-ray-bright supernova remnant RXJ1713.7-3946 (SNR G347.3-0.5) is believed to be associated with molecular cores that lie within regions of the most intense TeV emission. Using the Mopra telescope, four of the densest cores were observed using high-critical density tracers such as CS(J=1-0,J=2-1) and its isotopologue counterparts, NH3(1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions and N2H+(J=1-0) emission, confirming the presence of dense gas >10^4cm^-3 in the region. The mass estimates for Core C range from 40M_{\odot} (from CS(J=1-0)) to 80M_{\odot} (from NH3 and N2H+), an order of magnitude smaller than published mass estimates from CO(J=1-0) observations. We also modelled the energy-dependent diffusion of cosmic-ray protons accelerated by RXJ1713.7-3946 into Core C, approximating the core with average density and magnetic field values. We find that for considerably suppressed diffusion coefficients (factors \chi=10^{-3} down to 10^{-5} the galactic average), low energy cosmic-rays can be prevented from entering the inner core region. Such an effect could lead to characteristic spectral behaviour in the GeV to TeV gamma-ray and multi-keV X-ray fluxes across the core. These features may be measurable with future gamma-ray and multi-keV telescopes offering arcminute or better angular resolution, and can be a novel way to understand the level of cosmic-ray acceleration in RXJ1713.7-3946 and the transport properties of cosmic-rays in the dense molecular cores., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures and 5 tables. The G333 giant molecular cloud contains a few star clusters and H II regions, plus a number of condensations currently forming stars. We have mapped 13 of these sources with the appearance of young stellar objects (YSOs) with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph in the SL, SH, and LH modules (5-36 micron). We use these spectra plus available photometry and images to characterize the YSOs. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all sources peak between 35 and 110 micron, thereby showing their young age. The objects are divided into two groups: YSOs associated with extended emission in IRAC band 2 at 4.5 micron (`outflow sources') and YSOs that have extended emission in all IRAC bands peaking at the longest wavelengths (`red sources'). The two groups of objects have distinctly different spectra: All the YSOs associated with outflows show evidence of massive envelopes surrounding the protostar because the spectra show deep silicate absorption features and absorption by ices at 6.0, 6.8, and 15.2 micron. We identify these YSOs with massive envelopes cool enough to contain ice-coated grains as the `bloated' protostars in the models of Hosokawa et al. All spectral maps show ionized forbidden lines and PAH emission features. For four of the red sources, these lines are concentrated to the centres of the maps, from which we infer that these YSOs are the source of ionizing photons. Both types of objects show evidence of shocks, with most of the outflow sources showing a line of [S I] in the outflows and two of the red sources showing the more highly excited [Ne III] and [S IV] lines in outflow regions at some distance from the YSOs. The 4.5 micron emission seen in the IRAC band 2 images of the outflow sources is not due to H2 lines, which are too faint in the 5-10 micron wavelength region to be as strong as is needed to account for the IRAC band 2 emission., Comment: 31 pages and 30 figures in the paper plus 11 figures from the online Supporting Information. We report new mid-infrared observations of the remarkable object IRAS 15099-5856 using the space telescopes AKARI and Spitzer, which demonstrate the presence of prominent crystalline silicate emission in this bright source. IRAS 15099-5856 has a complex morphology with a bright central compact source (IRS1) surrounded by knots, spurs, and several extended (~4') arc-like filaments. The source is seen only at >= 10 um. The Spitzer MIR spectrum of IRS1 shows prominent emission features from Mg-rich crystalline silicates, strong [Ne II] 12.81 um and several other faint ionic lines. We model the MIR spectrum as thermal emission from dust and compare with the Herbig Be star HD 100546 and the luminous blue variable R71, which show very similar MIR spectra. Molecular line observations reveal two molecular clouds around the source, but no associated dense molecular cores. We suggest that IRS1 is heated by UV radiation from the adjacent O star Muzzio 10 and that its crystalline silicates most likely originated in a mass outflow from the progenitor of the supernova remnant (SNR) MSH 15-52. IRS1, which is embedded in the SNR, could have been shielded from the SN blast wave if the progenitor was in a close binary system with Muzzio 10. If MSH15-52 is a remnant of Type Ib/c supernova (SN Ib/c), as has been previously proposed, this would confirm the binary model for SN Ib/c. IRS1 and the associated structures may be the relics of massive star death, as shaped by the supernova explosion, the pulsar wind and the intense ionizing radiation of the embedded O star., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, Fig. 5 revised. The explosive BN/KL outflow emerging from OMC1 behind the Orion Nebula may have been powered by the dynamical decay of a non-hierarchical multiple system $\sim$500 years ago that ejected the massive stars I, BN, and source n, with velocities of about 10 to 30 km s$^{-1}$. New proper motion measurements of H$_2$ features show that within the errors of measurement, the outflow originated from the site of stellar ejection. Combined with published data, these measurements indicate an outflow age of $\sim$500 years, similar to the time since stellar ejection. The total kinetic energy of the ejected stars and the outflow is about 2 to $6 \times 10^{47}$ ergs. It is proposed that the gravitational potential energy released by the formation of a short-period binary, most likely source I, resulted in stellar ejection and powered the outflow. A scenario is presented for the formation of a compact, non-hierarchical multiple star system, its decay into an ejected binary and two high-velocity stars, and launch of the outflow. Three mechanisms may have contributed to the explosion in the gas: (i) Unbinding of the circum-cluster envelope following stellar ejection, (ii) disruption of circumstellar disks and high-speed expulsion of the resulting debris during the final stellar encounter, and (iii) the release of stored magnetic energy. Plausible proto-stellar disk end envelope properties can produce the observed outflow mass, velocity, and kinetic energy distributions. The ejected stars may have acquired new disks by fall-back or Bondi-Hoyle accretion with axes roughly orthogonal to their velocities. Antarctica provides a unique environment for astronomy. The cold, dry and stable air found above the high plateau, as well as the pure ice below, offers new opportunities across the photon & particle spectrum. The summits of the plateau provide the best seeing conditions, the darkest skies and the most transparent atmosphere of any earth-based observing site. Astronomical activities are now underway at four plateau sites: the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Concordia Station at Dome C, Kunlun Station at Dome A and Fuji Station at Dome F, in addition to long duration ballooning from the coastal station of McMurdo. Astronomy conducted includes optical, IR, THz & sub-mm, measurements of the CMBR, solar, as well as high energy astrophysics involving measurement of cosmic rays, gamma rays and neutrinos. Antarctica is also the richest source of meteorites on our planet. An extensive range of site testing measurements have been made over the high plateau. We summarise the facets of Antarctica that are driving developments in astronomy, and review the results of the site testing experiments undertaken to quantify those characteristics of the plateau relevant for it pursuit. We outline the historical development of the astronomy on the continent, and then review the principal scientific results to have emerged over the past three decades of activity in the discipline. We discuss how science is conducted in Antarctica, and in particular the difficulties, as well as the advantages, faced by astronomers seeking to bring their experiments there. We also review some of the political issues that will be encountered, both at national and international level. We present near- and mid-infrared observations on the shock-cloud interaction region in the southern part of the supernova remnant HB 21, performed with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) aboard AKARI satellite and the Wide InfraRed Camera (WIRC) at the Palomar 5 m telescope. The IRC 4 um (N4), 7 um (S7), and 11 um (S11) band images and the WIRC H2 v=1->0 S(1) 2.12 um image show similar diffuse features, around a shocked CO cloud. We analyzed the emission through comparison with the H2 line emission of several shock models. The IRC colors are well explained by the thermal admixture model of H2 gas--whose infinitesimal H2 column density has a power-law relation with the temperature $T$, $dN\sim T^{-b}dT$--with n(H2) $\sim3.9\times10^4$ cm^{-2}, $b\sim4.2$, and N(H2;T>100K) $\sim2.8\times10^{21}$ cm^{-2}. We interpreted these parameters with several different pictures of the shock-cloud interactions--multiple planar C-shocks, bow shocks, and shocked clumps--and discuss their weaknesses and strengths. The observed H2 v=1->0 S(1) intensity is four times greater than the prediction from the power-law admixture model, the same tendency as found in the northern part of HB 21 (Paper I). Massive young stellar objects (YSOs), like low-mass YSOs, appear to be surrounded by optically thick envelopes and/or disks and have regions, often bipolar, that are seen in polarized scattered light at near-infrared wavelengths. We are using the 0.2'' spatial resolution of NICMOS on Hubble Space Telescope to examine the structure of the disks and outflow regions of massive YSOs in star-forming regions within a few kpc of the Sun. Here we report on 2 micron polarimetry of NGC 6334 V and S255 IRS1. NGC 6334 V consists of a double-lobed bright reflection nebula seen against a dark region, probably an optically thick molecular cloud. Our polarization measurements show that the illuminating star lies ~ 2'' south of the line connecting the two lobes; we do not detect this star at 2 micron, but there are a small radio source and a mid-infrared source at this location. S255 IRS1 consists of two YSOs (NIRS1 and NIRS3) with overlapping scattered light lobes and luminosities corresponding to early B stars. Included in IRS1 is a cluster of stars from whose polarization we determine the local magnetic field direction. Neither YSO has its scattered light lobes aligned with this magnetic field. The line connecting the scattered light lobes of NIRS1 is twisted symmetrically around the star; the best explanation is that the star is part of a close binary and the outflow axis of NIRS1 is precessing as a result of non-coplanar disk and orbit. The star NIRS3 is also offset from the line connecting its two scattered light lobes. We present near- and mid-infrared observations on the shock-cloud interaction region in the northern part of the supernova remnant HB21, performed with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) aboard AKARI satellite and the Wide InfraRed Camera (WIRC) at the Palomar 5 m telescope. The IRC 7 um (S7), 11 um (S11), and 15 um (L15) band images and the WIRC H2 v = 1 -> 0 S(1) 2.12 um image show similar shock-cloud interaction features. We chose three representative regions, and analyzed their IRC emissions through comparison with H2 line emissions of several shock models. The IRC colors are well explained by the thermal admixture model of H2 gas--whose infinitesimal H2 column density has a power-law relation with the temperature T, dN ~ T^-b dT--with n(H2) ~ 10^3 cm^-3, b ~ 3, and N(H2 ;T > 100K) ~ 3x10^20 cm^-2. The derived b value may be understood by a bow shock picture, whose shape is cycloidal (cuspy) rather than paraboloidal. However, this picture raises another issue that the bow shocks must reside within ~0.01 pc size-scale, smaller than the theoretically expected. Instead, we conjectured a shocked clumpy interstellar medium picture, which may avoid the sizescale issue while explaining the similar model parameters. The observed H2 v = 1 -> 0 S(1) intensities are a factor of ~17 - 33 greater than the prediction from the power-law admixture model. This excess may be attributed to either an extra component of hot H2 gas or to the effects of collisions with hydrogen atoms, omitted in our power-law admixture model, both of which would increase the population in the v = 1 level of H2., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, ApJ accepted, higher resolution @ http://astro.snu.ac.kr/~jhshinn/ms.pdf

We describe observations with the Mopra radiotelescope designed to assess the feasibility of the H$_2$O maser southern Galactic plane survey (HOPS). We mapped two one-square-degree regions along the Galactic plane using the new 12 mm receiver and the UNSW Mopra spectrometer (MOPS). We covered the entire spectrum between 19.5 and 27.5 GHz using this setup with the main aims of finding out which spectral lines can be detected with a quick mapping survey. We report on detected emission from H$_2$O masers, NH$_3$ inversion transitions (1,1), (2,2) and (3,3), HC$_3$N (3-2), as well as several radio recombination lines., Comment: accepted by PASA

We report on Australia Telescope observations of the massive star forming region G305.2+0.2 at 1.2 cm. We detected emission in five molecules towards G305A, confirming its hot core nature. We determined a rotational temperature of 26 K for methanol. A non-LTE excitation calculation suggests a kinematic temperature of order 200 K. A time dependent chemical model is also used to model the gas phase chemistry of the hot core associated with G305A. A comparison with the observations suggest an age of between 2 x10^4 and 1.5 x10^5 years. We also report on a feature to the SE of G305A which may show weak Class I methanol maser emission in the line at 24.933 GHz. The more evolved source G305B does not show emission in any of the line tracers, but strong Class I methanol maser emission at 24.933 GHz is found 3\arcsec to the east. Radio continuum emission at 18.496 GHz is detected towards two \hii regions. The implications of the non-detection of radio continuum emission toward G305A and G305B are also discussed., Comment: 13 pages 11 figures

We present 2micron polarization measurements of positions in the BN region of the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC-1) made with NICMOS Camera 2 (0.2'' resolution) on HST. Our results are as follows: BN is sim 29% polarized by dichroic absorption and appears to be the illuminating source for most of the nebulosity to its north and up to sim 5'' to its south. Although the stars are probably all polarized by dichroic absorption, there are a number of compact, but non-point-source, objects that could be polarized by a combination of both dichroic absorption and local scattering of star light. We identify several candidate YSOs, including an approximately edge-on bipolar YSO 8.7'' east of BN, and a deeply-embedded variable star. Additional strongly polarized sources are IRc2-B, IRc2-D, and IRc7, all of which are obviously self-luminous at mid-infrared wavelengths and may be YSOs. None of these is a reflection nebula illuminated by a star located near radio source I, as was previously suggested. Other IRc sources are clearly reflection nebulae: IRc3 appears to be illuminated by IRc2-B or a combination of the IRc2 sources, and IRc4 and IRc5 appear to be illuminated by an unseen star in the vicinity of radio source I, or by Star n or IRc2-A. Trends in the magnetic field direction are inferred from the polarization of the 26 stars that are bright enough to be seen as NICMOS point sources. The most polarized star has a polarization position angle different from its neighbors by sim 40^o, but in agreement with the grain alignment inferred from millimeter polarization measurements of the cold dust cloud in the southern part of OMC-1., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal

We have successfully used a new on-the-fly mapping technique with the Mopra radiotelescope to image G305.2+0.2 in transitions of 13CO, HCO+, N2H+, CH3CN and CH3OH. All these species appear to be concentrated towards the infrared-quiet methanol maser site G305A (G305.21+0.21). We suggest that this region contains an extremely deeply embedded site of massive star formation, with comparable qualities to the low mass Class 0 stage. The infrared-bright methanol maser site G305B (G305.21+0.20) also exhibits emission in all the mapped transitions, but always at a lower level. We suggest this is because it harbours a site of massive star formation older and more developed than G305.21+0.21. All transitions appear to be extended beyond the size of the Mopra beam (30"). 13CO and HCO+ line wings are suggestive of an outflow in the region, but the spatial resolution of these data is insufficient to identify the powering source. A narrow-lined (1.6 km/s compared to a typical line FWHM of 6.4 km/s) N2H+ source (G305SW) is found 90" to the south-west of the main star forming centres, which does not correspond to any CH3CN or CH3OH source, nor does it correspond well to 13CO or HCO+ emission in the vicinity. We suggest this may be a massive, cold, quiescent and possibly prestellar core., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We examine the historical development of astrophysical science in Antarctica from the early 20th century until today. We find three temporally overlapping eras, each having a rather distinct beginning. These are the astrogeological era of meteorite discovery, the high energy era of particle detectors, and the photon astronomy era of microwave, sub--mm and infrared telescopes, sidelined by a few niche experiments at optical wavelengths. We report sensitive ATCA radio-continuum observations toward IRAS 15596-5301 and 16272-4837, two luminous objects (> 2x10^4 Lsun) thought to represent massive star-forming regions in early stages of evolution (due to previously undetected radio emission at the 1-sigma level of 2 mJy per beam). Also reported are 1.2-millimeter continuum and a series of molecular-line observations made with the SEST telescope. For IRAS 15596-5301, the observations reveal the presence of three distinct compact radio-continuum sources associated with a dense molecular core. We suggest that this core contains a cluster of B stars which are exciting compact HII regions that are in pressure equilibrium with the dense molecular surroundings. No radio continuum emission was detected from IRAS 16272-4837 (3-sigma limit of 0.2 mJy). However, a dense molecular core has been detected. The high luminosity and lack of radio emission from this massive core suggests that it hosts an embedded young massive protostar that is still undergoing an intense accretion phase. This scenario is supported by the observed characteristics of the line profiles and the presence of a bipolar outflow detected from observations of the SiO emission. We suggest that IRAS 16272-4837 is a bona fide massive star- forming region in a very early evolutionary stage, being the precursor of an ultra compact HII region., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Observations of H2 velocity profiles in the two most clearly defined Orion bullets are extremely difficult to reconcile with existing steady-state shock models. We have observed [FeII] 1.644um velocity profiles of selected bullets and H2 1-0 S(1) 2.122um velocity profiles for a series of positions along and across the corresponding bow-shaped shock fronts driven into the surrounding molecular cloud. Integrated [FeII] velocity profiles of the brightest bullets are consistent with theoretical bow shock predictions. However, observations of broad, singly-peaked H2 1-0 S(1) profiles at a range of positions within the most clearly resolved bullet wakes are not consistent with molecular shock modelling. A uniform, collisionally broadened background component which pervades the region in both tracers is inconsistent with fluorescence due to the ionizing radiation of the Trapezium stars alone., Comment: 20 pages including 18 figures, published in MNRAS
