Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. 9. Analysis of the first infrared spectrum of quasi-bound H2 line emission in Herbig-Haro 7

Abstract

Context. Highly excited molecular hydrogen H2 has been observed in many regions of shocked molecular gas. A recently published $K$-band spectrum of Herbig-Haro 7 (HH7) contains several vibration-rotation lines of H2 from highly excited energy levels that have not been detected elsewhere, including a line at 2.179 $\mu$m identified as arising from the $v$=2 $J$=29 level, which lies above the dissociation limit of H2. One emission line at 2.104 $\mu$m in this spectrum was unidentified. Aims. We aim to complete the analysis of the spectrum of HH7 by including previously missing molecular data that have been recently computed. Methods. We re-analysed the $K$-band spectrum, emphasising the physics of quasi-bound upper levels that can produce infrared emission lines in the $K$ band. Results. We confirm the identification of the $2-1$ $S$(27) line at 2.1785 $\mu$m and identify the line at 2.1042 $\mu$m as due to the 1-0 $S$(29) transition of H2, whose upper level energy is also higher than the dissociation limit. This latter identification, its column density, and the energy of its upper level further substantiate the existence of a hot thermal component at 5000 K in the HH7 environment.} Conclusion. The presence of the newly identified $1-0$ $S$(29) line, whose quasi-bound upper level ($v$=1, $J$=31) has a significant spontaneous dissociation probability, shows that dissociation of H2 is occurring. The mechanism by which virtually all of the H2 levels with energies from 20,000 K to 53,000 K is maintained in local thermodynamic equilibrium at a single temperature of $\sim$5,000 K remains to be understood., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters 22/12/2022

20. The Carina Nebula and Gum 31 molecular complex III: The distribution of the 1-3 GHz radio continuum across the whole nebula

Abstract

We report the most detailed $1-3$ GHz radio continuum emission map of the nearest region of massive star formation, the Carina Nebula. As part of a large program with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have covered $\sim$ 12 deg$^2$, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$ 16 arcsec, representing the largest and most complete map of the radio continuum to date. Our continuum map shows a spectacular and complex distribution of emission across the nebula, with multiple structures such as filaments, shells, and fronts across a wide range of size scales. The ionization fronts have advanced far into the southern and northern region of the Galactic Plane, as fronts are clearly detected at distances $\sim$ 80 pc from the stellar clusters in the center. We estimated an ionization photon luminosity $Q_\mathrm{H}=(7.8 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{50}$ s$^{-1}$ which corresponds to $\sim 85\%$ of the total value obtained from stellar population studies. Thus, approximately $15\%$ of the ionizing flux has escaped from the nebula into the diffuse Galactic Interstellar Medium. Comparison between radio continuum and the hydrogen atomic and molecular gas maps offers a clear view of the bipolar outflow driven by the energy released by the massive stellar clusters that also affects the fraction of molecular gas across the nebula. Comparison between 8$\mu$m and 70$\mu$m emission maps and the radio continuum reveals how the hot gas permeates through the molecular cloud, shapes the material into features such as pillars, small shells and arc-like structures, and ultimately, escapes., Comment: 18 pages, 16 Figures, 1 appendix

Abstract

Cm-wavelength radio continuum emission in excess of free-free, synchrotron and Rayleigh-Jeans dust emission (excess microwave emission, EME), and often called `anomalous microwave emission', is bright in molecular cloud regions exposed to UV radiation, i.e. in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). The EME correlates with IR dust emission on degree angular scales. Resolved observations of well-studied PDRs are needed to compare the spectral variations of the cm-continuum with tracers of physical conditions and of the dust grain population. The EME is particularly bright in the regions of the rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud (rho Oph) that surround the earliest type star in the complex, HD 147889, where the peak signal stems from the filament known as the rho Oph-W PDR. Here we report on ATCA observations of rho Oph-W that resolve the width of the filament. We recover extended emission using a variant of non-parametric image synthesis performed in the sky plane. The multi-frequency 17 GHz to 39 GHz mosaics reveal spectral variations in the cm-wavelength continuum. At ~30 arcsec resolutions, the 17-20 GHz intensities follow tightly the mid-IR, Icm propto I(8 um), despite the breakdown of this correlation on larger scales. However, while the 33-39 GHz filament is parallel to IRAC 8 mum, it is offset by 15-20 arcsec towards the UV source. Such morphological differences in frequency reflect spectral variations, which we quantify spectroscopically as a sharp and steepening high-frequency cutoff, interpreted in terms of the spinning dust emission mechanism as a minimum grain size a_cutoff ~ 6 +- 1A that increases deeper into the PDR., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We report on a study of the high-mass star formation in the the HII region W28A2 by investigating the molecular clouds extended over ~5-10 pc from the exciting stars using the 12CO and 13CO (J=1-0) and 12CO (J=2-1) data taken by the NANTEN2 and Mopra observations. These molecular clouds consist of three velocity components with the CO intensity peaks at V_LSR ~ -4 km s$^{-1}$, 9 km s$^{-1}$ and 16 km s$^{-1}$. The highest CO intensity is detected at V_LSR ~ 9 km s$^{-1}$, where the high-mass stars with the spectral types of O6.5-B0.5 are embedded. We found bridging features connecting these clouds toward the directions of the exciting sources. Comparisons of the gas distributions with the radio continuum emission and 8 um infrared emission show spatial coincidence/anti-coincidence, suggesting physical associations between the gas and the exciting sources. The 12CO J=2-1 to 1-0 intensity ratio shows a high value (> 0.8) toward the exciting sources for the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +9 km s$^{-1}$ clouds, possibly due to heating by the high-mass stars, whereas the intensity ratio at the CO intensity peak (V_LSR ~ 9 km s$^{-1}$) lowers down to ~0.6, suggesting self absorption by the dense gas in the near side of the +9 km s$^{-1}$ cloud. We found partly complementary gas distributions between the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +9 km s$^{-1}$ clouds, and the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +16 km s$^{-1}$ clouds. The exciting sources are located toward the overlapping region in the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +9 km s$^{-1}$ clouds. Similar gas properties are found in the Galactic massive star clusters, RCW 38 and NGC 6334, where an early stage of cloud collision to trigger the star formation is suggested. 23. Effect of feedback of massive stars in the fragmentation, distribution, and kinematics of the gas in two star forming regions in the Carina Nebula

Abstract

We present ALMA high spatial resolution observations towards two star forming regions located in one of the most extreme zones of star formation in the Galaxy, the Carina Nebula. One region is located at the center of the nebula and is severally affected by the stellar feedback from high-mass stars, while the other region is located further south and is less disturbed by the massive star clusters. We found that the region at the center of the nebula is forming less but more massive cores than the region located in the south, suggesting that the level of stellar feedback effectively influence the fragmentation process in clumps. Lines such as HCN, HCO$^{+}$ and SiO show abundant and complex gas distributions in both regions, confirming the presence of ionization and shock fronts. Jeans analysis suggests that the observed core masses in the region less affected by the massive stars are consistent with thermal fragmentation, but turbulent Jeans fragmentation might explain the high masses of the cores identified in the region in the center of Carina. Consistently, two different analyses in the HCO$^{+}$ line provided evidence for a higher level of turbulence in the gas more affected by the stellar feedback. The gas column density probability functions, N-PDFs, show log-normal shapes with clear transitions to power law regimes. We observed a wider N-PDF in the region at the center of the nebula, which provides further evidence for a higher level of turbulence in the material with a higher level of massive stellar feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal the 20th of January 2020

Abstract

We present 1 to 10GHz radio continuum flux density, spectral index, polarisation and Rotation Measure (RM) images of the youngest known Galactic Supernova Remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3, using observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We have conducted an expansion study spanning 8 epochs between 1984 and 2017, yielding results consistent with previous expansion studies of G1.9+0.3. We find a mean radio continuum expansion rate of ($0.78 \pm 0.09$) per cent year$^{-1}$ (or $\sim8900$ km s$^{-1}$ at an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc), although the expansion rate varies across the SNR perimeter. In the case of the most recent epoch between 2016 and 2017, we observe faster-than-expected expansion of the northern region. We find a global spectral index for G1.9+0.3 of $-0.81\pm0.02$ (76 MHz$-$10 GHz). Towards the northern region, however, the radio spectrum is observed to steepen significantly ($\sim -$1). Towards the two so called (east & west) "ears" of G1.9+0.3, we find very different RM values of 400-600 rad m$^{2}$ and 100-200 rad m$^{2}$ respectively. The fractional polarisation of the radio continuum emission reaches (19 $\pm$ 2)~per~cent, consistent with other, slightly older, SNRs such as Cas~A., Comment: 17 Pages, 13 Figures
