Search

The Milky Way's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) differs dramatically from our local solar neighbourhood, both in the extreme interstellar medium conditions it exhibits (e.g. high gas, stellar, and feedback density) and in the strong dynamics at play (e.g. due to shear and gas influx along the bar). Consequently, it is likely that there are large-scale physical structures within the CMZ that cannot form elsewhere in the Milky Way. In this paper, we present new results from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) large programme ACES (ALMA CMZ Exploration Survey) and conduct a multi-wavelength and kinematic analysis to determine the origin of the M0.8$-$0.2 ring, a molecular cloud with a distinct ring-like morphology. We estimate the projected inner and outer radii of the M0.8$-$0.2 ring to be 79" and 154", respectively (3.1 pc and 6.1 pc at an assumed Galactic Centre distance of 8.2 kpc) and calculate a mean gas density $> 10^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$, a mass of $\sim$ $10^6$ M$_\odot$, and an expansion speed of $\sim$ 20 km s$^{-1}$, resulting in a high estimated kinetic energy ($> 10^{51}$ erg) and momentum ($> 10^7$ M$_\odot$ km s$^{-1}$). We discuss several possible causes for the existence and expansion of the structure, including stellar feedback and large-scale dynamics. We propose that the most likely cause of the M0.8$-$0.2 ring is a single high-energy hypernova explosion. To viably explain the observed morphology and kinematics, such an explosion would need to have taken place inside a dense, very massive molecular cloud, the remnants of which we now see as the M0.8$-$0.2 ring. In this case, the structure provides an extreme example of how supernovae can affect molecular clouds., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, and 2 tables. We implement a new observational method for mapping the aliphatic hydrocarbon content in the solid phase in our Galaxy, based on spectrophotometric imaging of the 3.4 $\mu$m absorption feature from interstellar dust. We previously demonstrated this method in a field including the Galactic Centre cluster. We applied the method to a new field in the Galactic centre where the 3.4 $\mu$m absorption feature has not been previously measured and we extended the measurements to a field in the Galactic plane to sample the diffuse local interstellar medium, where the 3.4 $\mu$m absorption feature has been previously measured. We have analysed 3.4 $\mu$m optical depth and aliphatic hydrocarbon column density maps for these fields. Optical depths are found to be reasonably uniform in each field, without large source-to-source variations. There is, however, a weak trend towards increasing optical depth in a direction towards $b=0^{\circ}$ in the Galactic centre. The mean value of column densities and abundances for aliphatic hydrocarbon were found to be about several $\rm \times 10^{18} \, cm^{-2}$ and several tens $\times 10^{-6}$, respectively for the new sightlines in the Galactic plane. We conclude that at least 10-20% of the carbon in the Galactic plane lies in aliphatic form.

HESS J1804-216 is one of the brightest yet most mysterious TeV gamma-ray sources discovered to date. Previous arc-minute scale studies of the interstellar medium (ISM) surrounding this TeV gamma-ray source revealed HESS J1804-216 is likely powered by a mature supernova remnant (SNR) or pulsar, hence its origin remains uncertain. In this paper, we focus on the diffusive escape of cosmic-ray protons from potential SNR accelerators. These cosmic rays interact with the ISM to produce TeV gamma-rays. We utilise the isotropic diffusion equation solution for particles escaping from a shell, to model the energy-dependent escape and propagation of protons into the ISM. This work is the first attempt at modelling the spatial morphology of gamma-rays towards HESS J1804-216, using arc-minute ISM observations from both Mopra and the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. The spectral and spatial distributions of gamma-rays for the two nearby potential SNR counterparts, SNR G8.7-0.1 and the progenitor SNR of PSR J1803-2137, are presented here. We vary the diffusion parameters and particle spectrum and use a grid search approach to find the best combination of model parameters. We conclude that moderately slow diffusion is required for both candidates. The most promising candidate to be powering the TeV gamma-rays from HESS J1804-216 in a hadronic scenario is the progenitor SNR of PSR J1803-213., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables

Astrophysical observations provide strong evidence that more than 80% of all matter in the Universe is in the form of dark matter (DM). Two leading candidates of particles beyond the Standard Model that could constitute all or a fraction of the DM content are the so-called Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and Axion-Like Particles (ALPs). The upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array, which will observe gamma rays between 20 GeV and 300 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity, will have unique capabilities to search for these DM candidates. A particularly promising target for WIMP searches is the Galactic Center. WIMPs with annihilation cross sections correctly producing the DM relic density will be detectable with CTA, assuming an Einasto-like density profile and WIMP masses between 200 GeV and 10 TeV. The Galactic TeV $\gamma$-ray source HESS$\,$J1804$-$216 is currently an unidentified source. In an attempt to unveil its origin, we present here the most detailed study of interstellar gas using data from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey, 7 and 12$\,$mm wavelength Mopra surveys and Southern Galactic Plane Survey of HI. Several components of atomic and molecular gas are found to overlap HESS$\,$J1804$-$216 at various velocities along the line of sight. The CS(1-0) emission clumps confirm the presence of dense gas. Both correlation and anti-correlation between the gas and TeV $\gamma$-ray emission have been identified in various gas tracers, enabling several origin scenarios for the TeV $\gamma$-ray emission from HESS$\,$J1804$-$216. For a hadronic scenario, SNR$\,$G8.7$-$0.1 and the progenitor SNR of PSR$\,$J1803$-$2137 require cosmic ray (CR) enhancement factors of $\mathord{\sim} 50$ times the solar neighbour CR flux value to produce the TeV $\gamma$-ray emission. Assuming an isotropic diffusion model, CRs from both these SNRs require a slow diffusion coefficient, as found for other TeV SNRs associated with adjacent ISM gas. The morphology of gas located at 3.8$\,$kpc (the dispersion measure distance to PSR$\,$J1803$-$2137) tends to anti-correlate with features of the TeV emission from HESS$\,$J1804$-$216, making the leptonic scenario possible. In the interstellar medium, carbon is distributed between the gas and solid phases. However, while about half of the expected carbon abundance can be accounted for in the gas phase, there is considerable uncertainty as to the amount incorporated in interstellar dust. The aliphatic component of the carbonaceous dust is of particular interest because it produces a significant 3.4 $\mu$m absorption feature when viewed against a background radiation source. The optical depth of the 3.4 $\mu$m absorption feature is related to the number of aliphatic carbon C-H bonds along the line of sight. It is possible to estimate the column density of carbon locked up in the aliphatic hydrocarbon component of interstellar dust from quantitative analysis of the 3.4 $\mu$m interstellar absorption feature providing that the absorption coefficient of aliphatic hydrocarbons incorporated in the interstellar dust is known. We generated laboratory analogues of interstellar dust by experimentally mimicking interstellar/circumstellar conditions. The resultant spectra of these dust analogues closely match those from astronomical observations. The measurements of the absorption coefficient of aliphatic hydrocarbons incorporated in the analogues were carried out by a procedure which combined FTIR and $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopies. The absorption coefficients obtained for both interstellar analogues were found to be in close agreement (4.76(8) $\times$ 10$^{-18}$ cm group$^{-1}$ and 4.69(14) $\times$ 10$^{-18}$ cm group$^{-1}$), less than half those obtained in studies using small aliphatic molecules. The results thus obtained permit direct calibration of the astronomical observations, providing rigorous estimates of the amount of aliphatic carbon in the interstellar medium.

In the interstellar medium, the cosmic elemental carbon abundance includes the total carbon in both gas and solid phases. The aim of the study was to trial a new method for measuring the amount and distribution of aliphatic carbon within interstellar dust over wide fields of view of our Galaxy. This method is based on measurement of the 3.4 $\mu$m absorption feature from aliphatic carbonaceous matter. This can readily be achieved for single sources using IR spectrometers. However, making such measurements over wide fields requires an imaging IR camera, equipped with narrow-band filters that are able to sample the spectrum. While this cannot produce as good a determination of the spectra, the technique can be applied to potentially tens to hundreds of sources simultaneously, over the field of view of the camera. We examined this method for a field in the centre of the Galaxy, and produced a map showing the variation of 3.4 $\mu$m optical depth across it.

We investigate the interstellar medium (ISM) towards seven TeV gamma-ray sources thought to be pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) using Mopra molecular line observations at 7mm [CS(1-0), SiO(1-0,v=0)], Nanten CO(1-0) data and the SGPS/GASS HI survey. We have discovered several dense molecular clouds co-located to these TeV gamma-ray sources , which allows us to search for cosmic-rays (CRs) coming from progenitor SNRs or, potentially, from PWNe. We notably found SiO(1-0,v=0) emission towards HESS J1809-193, highlighting possible interaction between the adjacent supernova remnant SNR G011.0-0.0 and the molecular cloud at d $\sim$ 3.7 kpc. Using morphological features, and comparative studies of our column densities with those obtained from X-ray measurements, we claim a distance d $\sim$ 8.6 - 9.7 kpc for SNR G292.2-00.5, d $\sim$ 3.5 - 5.6 kpc for PSR J1418-6058 and d $\sim$ 1.5 kpc for the new SNR candidate found towards HESS J1303-631. From our mass and density estimates of selected molecular clouds, we discuss signatures of hadronic/leptonic components from PWNe and their progenitor SNRs. Interestingly, the molecular gas, which overlaps HESS J1026-582 at d $\sim$ 5 kpc, may support a hadronic origin. We find however that this scenario requires an undetected cosmic-ray accelerator to be located at d $\lt$ 10 pc from the molecular cloud. For HESS J1809-193, the cosmic-rays which have escaped SNR G011.0-0.0 could contribute to the TeV gamma-ray emission. Finally, from the hypothesis that at most 20% the pulsar spin down power could be converted into CRs, we find that, among the studied PWNe, only those from PSR J1809-1917 could potentially contribute to the TeV emission., Comment: 42 pages, 21 figures, 15 tables. We present observations of fifty square degrees of the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, covering Galactic longitudes $l = 300$-$350^\circ$ and latitudes $|b| \le 0.5^\circ$. These data have been taken at 0.6 arcminute spatial resolution and 0.1 km/s spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular clouds and gas of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109-115 GHz $J = 1$-0 transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and C$^{17}$O. We present a series of velocity-integrated maps, spectra and position-velocity plots that illustrate Galactic arm structures and trace masses on the order of $\sim$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$ per square degree; and include a preliminary catalogue of C$^{18}$O clumps located between $l=330$-$340^\circ$. The Galactic supernova remnant HESS J1534-571 (also known as G323.7-1.0) has a shell-like morphology in TeV gamma-ray emission and is a key object in the study of cosmic ray origin. Little is known about its distance and local environment. We examine Mopra $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO(1-0) data, Australian Telescope Compact Array HI, and Parkes HI data towards HESS J1534-571. We trace molecular clouds in at least five velocity ranges, including clumpy interstellar medium structures near a dip in HI emission at a kinematic velocity consistent with the Scutum-Crux arm at ~3.5 kpc. This feature may be a cavity blown-out by the progenitor star, a scenario that suggests HESS J1534-571 resulted from a core-collapse event. By employing parametrisations fitted to a sample of supernova remnants of known distance, we find that the radio continuum brightness of HESS J1534-571 is consistent with the ~3.5 kpc kinematic distance of the Scutum-Crux arm HI dip. Modelling of the supernova evolution suggests an ~8-24 kyr age for HESS J1534-571 at this distance., Comment: 16 pages, 10 Figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abridged: ATLASGAL is an unbiased 870 micron submillimetre survey of the inner Galactic plane. It provides a large and systematic inventory of all massive, dense clumps in the Galaxy (>1000 Msun) and includes representative samples of all embedded stages of high-mass star formation. Here we present the first detailed census of the properties (velocities, distances, luminosities and masses) and spatial distribution of a complete sample of ~8000 dense clumps located in the Galactic disk. We derive highly reliable velocities and distances to ~97% of the sample and use mid- and far-infrared survey data to develop an evolutionary classification scheme that we apply to the whole sample. Comparing the evolutionary subsamples reveals trends for increasing dust temperatures, luminosities and line-widths as a function of evolution indicating that the feedback from the embedded proto-clusters is having a significant impact on the structure and dynamics of their natal clumps. We find 88\,per\,cent are already associated with star formation at some level. We also find the clump mass to be independent of evolution suggesting that the clumps form with the majority of their mass in-situ. We estimate the statistical lifetime of the quiescent stage to be ~5 x 10^4 yr for clump masses ~1000 Msun decreasing to ~1 x 10^4 yr for clump masses >10000 Msun. We find a strong correlation between the fraction of clumps associated with massive stars and peak column density. The fraction is initially small at low column densities but reaching 100\,per\,cent for column densities above 10^{23} cm^{-2}; there are no clumps with column density clumps above this value that are not already associated with massive star formation. All of the evidence is consistent with a dynamic view of star formation wherein the clumps form rapidly and are initially very unstable so that star formation quickly ensues., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present a study of the three-dimensional structure of the molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre (GC) using CO emission and OH absorption lines. Two CO isotopologue lines, $^{12}$CO ($J$=1$\rightarrow$0) and $^{13}$CO ($J$=1$\rightarrow$0), and four OH ground-state transitions, surveyed by the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH), contribute to this study. We develop a novel method to calculate the OH column density, excitation temperature, and optical depth precisely using all four OH lines, and we employ it to derive a three-dimensional model for the distribution of molecular clouds in the GC for six slices in Galactic latitude. The angular resolution of the data is 15.5 arcmin, which at the distance of the GC (8.34 kpc) is equivalent to 38 pc. We find that the total mass of OH in the GC is in the range 2400-5100 Solar mass . The face-on view at a Galactic latitude of b = 0{\deg} displays a bar-like structure with an inclination angle of 67.5 $\pm$ 2.1{\deg} with respect to the line of sight. No ring-like structure in the GC is evident in our data, likely due to the low spatial resolution of the CO and OH maps., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 12 figures

The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) has mapped 100 square degrees of the Galactic plane for water masers and thermal molecular line emission using the 22-m Mopra telescope. We describe the automated spectral-line fitting pipelines used to determine the properties of emission detected in HOPS datacubes, and use these to derive the physical and kinematic properties of gas in the survey. A combination of the angular resolution, sensitivity, velocity resolution and high critical density of lines targeted make the HOPS data cubes ideally suited to finding precursor clouds to the most massive and dense stellar clusters in the Galaxy. We compile a list of the most massive HOPS ammonia regions and investigate whether any may be young massive cluster progenitor gas clouds. HOPS is also ideally suited to trace the flows of dense gas in the Galactic Centre. We find the kinematic structure of gas within the inner 500pc of the Galaxy is consistent with recent predictions for the dynamical evolution of gas flows in the centre of the Milky Way. We confirm a recent finding that the dense gas in the inner 100pc has an oscillatory kinematic structure with characteristic length scale of ~20pc, and also identify similar oscillatory kinematic structure in the gas at radii larger than 100pc. Finally, we make all of the above fits and the remaining HOPS data cubes across the 100 square degrees of the survey available to the community., Comment: 53 pages, 34 figures, 4 tables. Vibration-rotation lines of H$_{2}$ from highly excited levels approaching the dissociation limit have been detected at a number of locations in the shocked gas of the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC-1), including in a Herbig-Haro object near the tip of one of the OMC-1 "fingers." Population diagrams show that while the excited H$_{2}$ is almost entirely at a kinetic temperature of $\sim$1,800 K, (typical for vibrationally shock-excited H$_{2}$), as in the previously reported case of Herbig-Haro object HH 7 up to a few percent of the H$_{2}$ is at a kinetic temperature of $\sim$5,000~K. The location with the largest fraction of hot H$_{2}$ is the Herbig-Haro object, where the outflowing material is moving at a higher speed than at the other locations. Although theoretical work is required for a better understanding of the 5,000 K H$_{2}$, (including how it cools), its existence and the apparent dependence of its abundance relative to that of the cooler component on the relative velocities of the outflow and the surrounding ambient gas appear broadly consistent with it having recently reformed. We present a detailed analysis of the interstellar medium towards the TeV $\gamma$-ray sources HESS J1640$-$465 and HESS J1641$-$463 using results from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey and from a Mopra 7 mm-wavelength study. The $\gamma$-ray sources are positionally coincident with two supernova remnants G338.3$-$0.0 and G338.5+0.1 respectively. A bright complex of HII regions connect the two SNRs and TeV objects. Observations in the CO(1-0) transition lines reveal substantial amounts of diffuse gas positionally coincident with the $\gamma$-ray sources at multiple velocities along the line of sight, while 7 mm observations in CS, SiO, HC$_{3}$N and CH$_{3}$OH transition lines reveal regions of dense, shocked gas. Archival HI data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey was used to account for the diffuse atomic gas. Physical parameters of the gas towards the TeV sources were calculated from the data. We find that for a hadronic origin for the $\gamma$-ray emission, the cosmic-ray enhancement rates are $\sim 10^{3}$ and $10^{2}$ times the local solar value for HESS J1640$-$465 and HESS J1641$-$463 respectively., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication by MNRAS

Three bright molecular line sources in G333 have recently been shown to exhibit signatures of infall. We describe a molecular line radiative transfer modelling process which is required to extract the infall signature from Mopra and Nanten2 data. The observed line profiles differ greatly between individual sources but are reproduced well by variations upon a common unified model where the outflow viewing angle is the most significant difference between the sources. The models and data together suggest that the observed properties of the high-mass star-forming regions such as infall, turbulence, and mass are consistent with scaled-up versions of the low-mass case with turbulent velocities that are supersonic and an order of magnitude larger than those found in low-mass star-forming regions. Using detailed radiative transfer modeling, we show that the G333 cores are essentially undergoing a scaled-up version of low mass star formation. This is an extension of earlier work in that the degree of infall and the chemical abundances are constrained by the RT modeling in a way that is not practical with a standard analysis of observational data. We also find high velocity infall and high infall mass rates, possibly suggesting accelerated collapse due to external pressure. Molecular depletion due to freeze-out onto dust grains in central regions of the cores is suggested by low molecular abundances of several species. Strong evidence for a local enhancement of 13C-bearing species towards the outflow cloud cores is discussed, consistent with the presence of shocks caused by the supersonic motions within them., Comment: MNRAS (accepted)

HESS J1825-137 is a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) whose TeV emission extends across ~1 deg. Its large asymmetric shape indicates that its progenitor supernova interacted with a molecular cloud located in the north of the PWN as detected by previous CO Galactic survey (e.g Lemiere, Terrier & Djannati-Ata\"i 2006). Here we provide a detailed picture of the ISM towards the region north of HESS J1825-137, with the analysis of the dense molecular gas from our 7mm and 12mm Mopra survey and the more diffuse molecular gas from the Nanten CO(1-0) and GRS $^{13}$CO(1-0) surveys. Our focus is the possible association between HESS J1825-137 and the unidentified TeV source to the north, HESS J1826-130. We report several dense molecular regions whose kinematic distance matched the dispersion measured distance of the pulsar. Among them, the dense molecular gas located at (RA, Dec)=(18.421h,-13.282$^{\circ}$) shows enhanced turbulence and we suggest that the velocity structure in this region may be explained by a cloud-cloud collision scenario. Furthermore, the presence of a H$\alpha$ rim may be the first evidence of the progenitor SNR of the pulsar PSR J1826-1334 as the distance between the H$\alpha$ rim and the TeV source matched with the predicted SNR radius R$_{\text{SNR}}$~120 pc. From our ISM study, we identify a few plausible origins of the HESS J1826-130 emission, including the progenitor SNR of PSR J1826-1334 and the PWN G018.5-0.4 powered by PSR J1826-1256. A deeper TeV study however, is required to fully identify the origin of this mysterious TeV source., Comment: 19 figures, 27 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We have obtained K-band spectra at R~5,000 and angular resolution 0.3" of a section of the Herbig-Haro 7 (HH7) bow shock, using the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph at Gemini North. Present in the portion of the data cube corresponding to the brightest part of the bow shock are emission lines of H2 with upper state energies ranging from ~6,000 K up to the dissociation energy of H2, ~50,000 K. Because of low signal-to-noise ratios, the highest excitation lines cannot be easily seen elsewhere in the observed region. However, excitation temperatures, measured throughout much of the observed region using lines from levels as high as 25,000 K, are a strong function of upper level energy, indicating that the very highest levels are populated throughout. The level populations in the brightest region are well fit by a two-temperature model, with 98.5% of the emitting gas at T=1800 K and 1.5% at T=5200 K. The bulk of the H2 line emission in HH7, from the 1,800 K gas, has previously been well modeled by a continuous shock, but the 5,200 K component is inconsistent with standalone standard continuous shock models. We discuss various possible origins for the hot component and suggest that this component is H2 newly reformed on dust grains and then ejected from them, presumably following dissociation of some of the H2 by the shock.

We present molecular line imaging observations of three massive molecular outflow sources, G333.6-0.2, G333.1-0.4, and G332.8-0.5, all of which also show evidence for infall, within the G333 giant molecular cloud (GMC). All three are within a beam size (36 arcseconds) of IRAS sources, 1.2-mm dust clumps, various masing species and radio continuum-detected HII regions and hence are associated with high-mass star formation. We present the molecular line data and derive the physical properties of the outflows including the mass, kinematics, and energetics and discuss the inferred characteristics of their driving sources. Outflow masses are of 10 to 40 solar masses in each lobe, with core masses of order 10^3 solar masses. outflow size scales are a few tenth of a parsec, timescales are of several x10^4 years, mass loss rates a few x10^-4 solar masses/year. We present a continuing study of a sample 44 molecular outflows, observed in 13CO lines, closely associated with 6.7GHz methanol masers, hence called Methanol Maser Associated Outflows (MMAOs). We compare MMAO properties with those of outflows from other surveys in the literature. In general, MMAOs follow similar trends, but show a deficit in number at low masses and momenta, with a corresponding higher fraction at the high end of the distributions. A similar trend is seen for the dynamical timescales of MMAOs. We argue that the lack of relatively low mass and young flows in MMAOs is due to the inherent selection-bias in the sample, i.e. its direct association with 6.7GHz methanol masers. This implies that methanol masers must switch on after the onset of outflows (hence accretion), and not before a sufficient abundance of methanol is liberated from icy dust mantles. Consequently the average dynamical age of MMAOs is older than for the general population of molecular outflows. We have selected the positions of 54 6.7GHz methanol masers from the Methanol Multibeam Survey catalogue, covering a range of longitudes between $20^{\circ}$ and $34^{\circ}$ of the Galactic Plane. These positions were mapped in the J=3-2 transition of both the $\rm{^{13}CO}$ and $\rm{C^{18}O}$ lines. A total of 58 $\rm{^{13}CO}$ emission peaks are found in the vicinity of these maser positions. We search for outflows around all $\rm{^{13}CO}$ peaks, and find evidence for high-velocity gas in all cases, spatially resolving the red and blue outflow lobes in 55 cases. Of these sources, 44 have resolved kinematic distances, and are closely associated with the 6.7GHz masers, a sub-set referred to as Methanol Maser Associated Outflows (MMAOs). We calculate the masses of the clumps associated with each peak using 870 $\rm{\mu m}$ continuum emission from the ATLASGAL survey. A strong correlation is seen between the clump mass and both outflow mass and mechanical force, lending support to models in which accretion is strongly linked to outflow. We find that the scaling law between outflow activity and clump masses observed for low-mass objects, is also followed by the MMAOs in this study, indicating a commonality in the formation processes of low-mass and high-mass stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have imaged 24 spectral lines in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) around the Galactic Centre, in the range 42 to 50 GHz. The lines include emission from the CS, CH3OH, HC3N, SiO, HNCO, HOCO+, NH2CHO, OCS, HCS+, CCS, C34S, 13CS, 29SiO, H13CCCN, HCC13CN and HC5}N molecules, and three hydrogen recombination lines. The area covered is Galactic longitude -0.7 to 1.8 deg. and latitude -0.3 to 0.2 deg., including the bright cores around Sgr A, SgrB2, SgrC and G1.6-0.025. This work used the 22-m Mopra radio telescope in Australia, obtaining ~ 1.8 km/s spectral and ~ 65 arcsec spatial resolution. We present peak images from this study and conduct a principal component analysis on the integrated emission from the brightest 10 lines, to study similarities and differences in the line distribution. We examine the integrated line intensities and line ratios in selected apertures around the bright cores, as well as for the complete mapped region of the CMZ. We compare these 7-mm lines to the corresponding lines in the 3-mm band, for five molecules, to study the excitation. There is a variation in 3-mm to 7-mm line ratio across the CMZ, with relatively higher ratio in the centre around Sgr B2 and Sgr A. The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) has mapped a 100 degree strip of the Galactic plane (-70deg > l > 30deg, |b| < 0.5deg) using the 22-m Mopra antenna at 12-mm wavelengths. Observations were conducted in on-the-fly mode using the Mopra spectrometer (MOPS), targeting water masers, thermal molecular emission and radio-recombination lines. Foremost among the thermal lines are the 23 GHz transitions of NH3 J,K = (1,1) and (2,2), which trace the densest parts of molecular clouds (n > 10^4 cm^{-3}). In this paper we present the NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) data, which have a resolution of 2 arcmin and cover a velocity range of +/-200 km/s. The median sensitivity of the NH3 data-cubes is sigma_Tmb = 0.20 +/1 0.06 K. For the (1,1) transition this sensitivity equates to a 3.2 kpc distance limit for detecting a 20 K, 400 Msun cloud at the 5-sigma level. Similar clouds of mass 5,000 Msun would be detected as far as the Galactic centre, while 30,000 Msun clouds would be seen across the Galaxy. We have developed an automatic emission finding procedure based on the ATNF DUCHAMP software and have used it to create a new catalogue of 669 dense molecular clouds. The catalogue is 100 percent complete at the 5-sigma detection limit (Tmb = 1.0 K). A preliminary analysis of the ensemble cloud properties suggest that the near kinematic distances are favoured. The cloud positions are consistent with current models of the Galaxy containing a long bar. Combined with other Galactic plane surveys this new molecular-line dataset constitutes a key tool for examining Galactic structure and evolution. We have mapped 20 molecular lines in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) around the Galactic Centre, emitting from 85.3 to 93.3 GHz. This work used the 22-m Mopra radio telescope in Australia, equipped with the 8-GHz bandwidth UNSW-MOPS digital filter bank, obtaining \sim 2 km/s spectral and \sim 40 arcsec spatial resolution. The lines measured include emission from the c-C3H2, CH3CCH, HOCO+, SO, H13CN, H13CO+, SO, H13NC, C2H, HNCO, HCN, HCO+, HNC, HC3N, 13CS and N2H+ molecules. The area covered is Galactic longitude -0.7 to 1.8 deg. and latitude -0.3 to 0.2 deg., including the bright dust cores around Sgr A, Sgr B2, Sgr C and G1.6-0.025. We present images from this study and conduct a principal component analysis on the integrated emission from the brightest 8 lines. This is dominated by the first component, showing that the large-scale distribution of all molecules are very similar. We examine the line ratios and optical depths in selected apertures around the bright dust cores, as well as for the complete mapped region of the CMZ. We highlight the behaviour of the bright HCN, HNC and HCO+ line emission, together with that from the 13C isotopologues of these species, and compare the behaviour with that found in extra-galactic sources where the emission is unresolved spatially. We also find that the isotopologue line ratios (e.g. HCO+/H13CO+) rise significantly with increasing red-shifted velocity in some locations. We present 7mm Mopra observations of the dense molecular gas towards the W28 supernova remnant (SNR) field, following a previous 12mm line survey of this region. These observations take advantage of the 7mm beam size to probe the dense and disrupted gas in the region at ~1 arcmin scales. Our observations are focused towards the north-eastern (NE) HESS J1801-233 and southern HESS J1800-240B TeV gamma-ray sources, with slightly less observations towards HESS J1800-240A & C. Using the CS (1-0) transition we reveal multiple regions of dense gas, nH2 ~10^5 cm^-3. We report the discovery of dense gas towards HESS J1800-240C, at the site of a 1720MHz OH maser. The NE molecular cloud is known to be disrupted, many 1720MHz OH masers and broad CO line emission are detected at the rim of W28. Here we reveal this shock interaction region contains generally extended clumpy CS, as well as clumpy SiO and CH3OH emission with broad line profiles. The FWHM of the molecular lines extend up to 18 km/s on the W28 side of the NE cloud. The detection of SiO towards maser clumps OH C, D, E & F provide further evidence of the shocked conditions in the NE cloud. Several other lines associated with star formation are also detected towards the southern source, notably the energetic HII complex G5.89-0.39. The spatial match of dense gas with the TeV emission further supports the CR origin for the gamma-rays. We estimate the mass of several extended dense clouds within the field and predict the TeV flux from the dense cloud components. The predicted fluxes are on the order of 10^{-14} - 10^{-13} ph/cm^2/s, which should be detectable and possibly resolved by a future TeV instrument, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array., Comment: 18 pages + 2 pages appendix accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present first results of the H_2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS), using the Mopra radiotelescope with a broad band backend and a beam size of about 2'. We have observed 100 square degrees of the southern Galactic plane at 12mm (19.5 to 27.5GHz), including spectral line emission from water masers, multiple metastable transitions of ammonia, cyanoacetylene, methanol and radio recombination lines. In this paper, we report on the characteristics of the survey and water maser emission. We find 540 water masers, of which 334 are new detections. The strongest maser is 3933Jy and the weakest is 0.7Jy, with 62 masers over 100Jy. In 14 maser sites, the spread in velocity of the water maser emission exceeds 100km/s. In one region, the water maser velocities are separated by 351.3km/s. The rms noise levels are typically between 1-2Jy, with 95% of the survey under 2Jy. We estimate completeness limits of 98% at around 8.4Jy and 50% at around 5.5Jy. We estimate that there are between 800 and 1500 water masers in the Galaxy that are detectable in a survey with similar completeness limits to HOPS. We report possible masers in NH_3 (11,9) and (8,6) emission towards G19.61-0.23 and in the NH_3 (3,3) line towards G23.33-0.30., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Cold massive cores are one of the earliest manifestations of high mass star formation. Following the detection of SiO emission from G333.125-0.562, a cold massive core, further investigations of the physics, chemistry and dynamics of this object has been carried out. Mopra and NANTEN2 molecular line profile observations, Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) line and continuum emission maps, and Spitzer 24 and 70 \mum images were obtained. These new data further constrain the properties of this prime example of the very early stages of high mass star formation. A model for the source was constructed and compared directly with the molecular line data using a 3D molecular line transfer code - MOLLIE. The ATCA data reveal that G333.125-0.562 is composed of two sources. One of the sources is responsible for the previously detected molecular outflow and is detected in the Spitzer 24 and 70 \mum band data. Turbulent velocity widths are lower than other more active regions of G333 which reflects the younger evolutionary stage and/or lower mass of this core. The molecular line modelling requires abundances of the CO isotopes that strongly imply heavy depletion due to freeze-out of this species onto dust grains. The principal cloud is cold, moderately turbulent and possesses an outflow which indicates the presence of a central driving source. The secondary source could be an even less evolved object as no apparent associations with continuum emissions at (far-)infrared wavelengths., Comment: 10 pages, accepted to MNRAS

We explore the longitude-velocity distribution of 6.7-GHz methanol masers in the context of the inner structure of our Galaxy. We analyse the correlation in velocities within this distribution and identify density enhancements indicating large-scale regions of enhanced star formation. These are interpreted as the starting points of the spiral arms and the interaction of the Galactic bar with the 3-kpc arms. The methanol masers support the presence of a long thin bar with a 45 degree orientation. Signatures of the full 3-kpc arm structure are seen, including a prominent tangent at approximately -22 degrees Galactic longitude. We compare this distribution with existing models of the gas dynamics of our Galaxy. The 3-kpc arm structure appears likely to correspond to the radius of corotation resonance of the bar, with the bar on its inner surface and the starting points of the spiral arms on its outer surface., Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures. We have undertaken a spectral-line imaging survey of a 6 x 6 arcmin^2 area around Sgr B2 near the centre of the Galaxy, in the range from 30 to 50 GHz, using the Mopra telescope. The spatial resolution varies from 1.0 to 1.4 arcmin and the spectral resolution from 1.6 to 2.7 km s^-1 over the frequency range. We present velocity-integrated emission images for 47 lines: 38 molecular lines and 9 radio recombination lines. There are significant differences between the distributions of different molecules, in part due to spatial differences in chemical abundance across the complex. For example, HNCO and HOCO^+ are found preferentially in the north cloud, and CH_2NH near Sgr B2 (N). Some of the differences between lines are due to excitation differences, as shown by the 36.17 and 44.07 GHz lines of CH_3OH, which have maser emission, compared to the 48.37 GHz line of CH_3OH. Other major differences in integrated molecular line distribution are due to absorption of the 7-mm free-free continuum emission (spatially traced by the radio recombination line emission) by cool intervening molecular material, causing a central dip in the molecular line distributions. These line distribution similarities and differences have been statistically described by principal component analysis (PCA), and interpreted in terms of simple Sgr B2 physical components of the cooler, lower density envelope, and dense, hot cores Sgr B2 (N), (M) and (S)., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We present 12mm Mopra observations of dense molecular gas towards the W28 supernova remnant (SNR) field. The focus is on the dense molecular gas towards the TeV gamma-ray sources detected by the H.E.S.S. telescopes, which likely trace the cosmic-rays from W28 and possibly other sources in the region. Using the NH3 inversion transitions we reveal several dense cores inside the molecular clouds, the majority of which coincide with high-mass star formation and HII regions, including the energetic ultra-compact HII region G5.89-0.39. A key exception to this is the cloud north east of W28, which is well-known to be disrupted as evidenced by clusters of 1720MHz OH masers and broad CO line emission. Here we detect broad NH3, up to the (9,9) transition, with linewidths up to 16 km/s. This broad NH3 emission spatially matches well with the TeV source HESS J1801-233 and CO emission, and its velocity dispersion distribution suggests external disruption from the W28 SNR direction. Other lines are detected, such as HC3N and HC5N, H2O masers, and many radio recombination lines, all of which are primarily found towards the southern high-mass star formation regions. These observations provide a new view onto the internal structures and dynamics of the dense molecular gas towards the W28 SNR field, and in tandem with future higher resolution TeV gamma-ray observations will offer the chance to probe the transport of cosmic-rays into molecular clouds., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present the results of a programme of scanning and mapping observations of astronomical masers and Jupiter designed to characterise the performance of the Mopra Radio Telescope at frequencies between 16-50 GHz using the 12-mm and 7-mm receivers. We use these observations to determine the telescope beam size, beam shape and overall telescope beam efficiency as a function of frequency. We find that the beam size is well fit by $\lambda$/$D$ over the frequency range with a correlation coefficient of ~90%. We determine the telescope main beam efficiencies are between ~48-64% for the 12-mm receiver and reasonably flat at ~50% for the 7-mm receiver. Beam maps of strong H$_2$O (22 GHz) and SiO masers (43 GHz) provide a means to examine the radial beam pattern of the telescope. At both frequencies the radial beam pattern reveals the presence of three components, a central `core', which is well fit by a Gaussian and constitutes the telescopes main beam, and inner and outer error beams. At both frequencies the inner and outer error beams extend out to approximately 2 and 3.4 times the full-width half maximum of the main beam respectively. Sources with angular sizes a factor of two or more larger than the telescope main beam will couple to the main and error beams, and therefore the power contributed by the error beams needs to be considered. From measurements of the radial beam power pattern we estimate the amount of power contained in the inner and outer error beams is of order one-fifth at 22 GHz rising slightly to one-third at 43 GHz., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA

RX J1713.7-3946 is one of the TeV {\gamma}-ray supernova remnants (SNRs) emitting synchrotron X rays. The SNR is associated with molecular gas located at ~1 kpc. We made new molecular observations toward the dense cloud cores, peaks A, C and D, in the SNR in the 12CO(J=2-1) and 13CO(J=2-1) transitions at angular resolution of 90". The most intense core in 13CO, peak C, was also mapped in the 12CO(J=4-3) transition at angular resolution of 38". Peak C shows strong signs of active star formation including bipolar outflow and a far-infrared protostellar source and has a steep gradient with a r^{-2.2$\pm$0.4} variation in the average density within radius r. Peak C and the other dense cloud cores are rim-brightened in synchrotron X rays, suggesting that the dense cloud cores are embedded within or on the outer boundary of the SNR shell. This confirms the earlier suggestion that the X rays are physically associated with the molecular gas (Fukui et al. 2003). We present a scenario where the densest molecular core, peak C, survived against the blast wave and is now embedded within the SNR. Numerical simulations of the shock-cloud interaction indicate that a dense clump can indeed survive shock erosion, since shock propagation speed is stalled in the dense clump. Additionally, the shock-cloud interaction induces turbulence and magnetic field amplification around the dense clump that may facilitate particle acceleration in the lower-density inter-clump space leading to the enhanced synchrotron X rays around dense cores., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, to accepted in The Astrophysical Journal. We have conducted a Galactic plane survey of methanol masers at 6668 MHz using a 7-beam receiver on the Parkes telescope. Here we present results from the first part, which provides sensitive unbiased coverage of a large region around the Galactic Centre. Details are given for 183 methanol maser sites in the longitude range 345$^{\circ}$ through the Galactic Centre to 6$^{\circ}$. Within 6$^{\circ}$ of the Centre, we found 88 maser sites, of which more than half (48) are new discoveries. The masers are confined to a narrow Galactic latitude range, indicative of many sources at the Galactic Centre distance and beyond, and confined to a thin disk population; there is no high latitude population that might be ascribed to the Galactic Bulge. Within 2$^{\circ}$ of the Galactic Centre the maser velocities all lie between -60 and +77 \kms, a range much smaller than the 540 \kms range observed in CO. Elsewhere, the maser with highest positive velocity (+107 \kms) occurs, surprisingly, near longitude 355$^{\circ}$ and is probably attributable to the Galactic bar. The maser with the most negative velocity (-127 \kms) is near longitude 346$^{\circ}$, within the longitude-velocity locus of the near side of the `3-kpc arm'. It has the most extreme velocity of a clear population of masers associated with the near and far sides of the 3-kpc arm. Closer to the Galactic Centre the maser space density is generally low, except within 0.25 kpc of the Centre itself, the `Galactic Centre Zone', where it is 50 times higher, which is hinted at by the longitude distribution, and confirmed by the unusual velocities., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures

A 5'x5' region encompassing NGC6334I and I(N) has been mapped at a wavelength of 3mm (from 83.5 to 115.5GHz) with the Mopra telescope at an angular resolution between 33 arcsec and 36 arcsec. This investigation has made use of the recently installed 3mm MMIC receiver and the Mopra Spectrometer (MOPS) with broadband capabilities permitting total coverage of the entire frequency range with just five different observations. In total, the spatial distribution of nineteen different molecules, ions and radicals, along with additional selected isotopologues have been studied. Whilst most species trace the sites of star formation, CH_3CN appears to be most closely associated with NGC6334I and I(N). Both CN and C_2H appear to be widespread, tracing gas that is not associated with active star formation. Both N_2H^+ and HC_3N closely resemble dust continuum emission, showing they are reliable tracers of dense material, as well as the youngest stages of high mass star formation. Hot (E_u/k>100K) thermal CH_3OH emission is preferentially found towards NGC6334I, contrasting with I(N), where only cold (E_u/k<22K) thermal CH_3OH emission is found., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We have undertaken a Parkes ammonia spectral line study, in the lowest two inversion transitions, of southern massive star formation regions, including young massive candidate protostars, with the aim of characterising the earliest stages of massive star formation. 138 sources from the submillimetre continuum emission studies of Hill et al., were found to have robust (1,1) detections, including two sources with two velocity components, and 102 in the (2,2) transition. We determine the ammonia line properties of the sources: linewidth, flux density, kinetic temperature, NH$_3$ column density and opacity, and revisit our SED modelling procedure to derive the mass for 52 of the sources. By combining the continuum emission information with ammonia observations we substantially constrain the physical properties of the high-mass clumps. There is clear complementarity between ammonia and continuum observations for derivations of physical parameters. The MM-only class, identified in the continuum studies of Hill et al., display smaller sizes, mass and velocity dispersion and/or turbulence than star-forming clumps, suggesting a quiescent prestellar stage and/or the formation of less massive stars., Comment: 20 pages, 9 Figures, 1 appendix (to appear in full online only, a sample appendix in the paper); 7 tables. Recent 1.2-mm continuum observations have shown the giant HII region NGC3576 to be embedded in the centre of an extended filamentary dust-cloud. The bulk of the filament away from the HII region contains a number of clumps seen only at (sub-)millimetre wavelengths and which may host massive protostellar objects at a very early stage of evolution. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to image the cloud for the NH3(1,1), (2,2) and (4,4) transitions, 22 GHz water masers, and 23 GHz continuum emission. We also utilised the 22-m Mopra antenna to map the region for the molecular lines 13CO (1-0), C18O (1-0), HCO+ (1-0), H13CO+ (1-0), CS (1-0) and N2H+ (1-0).The HII region is observed to be expanding into the molecular cloud, sweeping up a clumpy shell of gas, while the central star cluster is dispersing the molecular gas to the east. Temperatures are highest adjacent to the central HII region, indicating that the embedded cluster of young stars there is heating the gas. Six new water masers were detected in the arms of the filament, all associated with NH3 emission peaks, confirming that star-formation has begun within these cores. Core masses range from 5 to 516 solar masses and most appear to be gravitationally bound. Complementary results by Andr\'e et al. (2008) imply that seven cores will go on to form massive stars between 15 and 50 solar masses. The large scale velocity structure of the filament is smooth, but at least one clump shows the signature of inward gas motions via asymmetries in the NH3 (1,1) line profiles. The same clump exhibits an enhanced abundance of N2H+, which coupled with an absence of CO indicates depletion onto the dust grain surface. The HII region at the heart of NGC3576 is potentially triggering the formation of massive stars in the bulk of the associated cloud., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

We present Australia Telescope Compact Array observations towards 6 massive star formation regions which, from their strong 24 GHz continuum emission but no compact 8 GHz continuum emission, appeared good candidates for hyper-compact HII regions. However, the properties of the ionised gas derived from the 19 to 93 GHz continuum emission and H70 alpha + H57 alpha radio recombination line data show the majority of these sources are, in fact, regions of spatially-extended, optically-thin free-free emission. These extended sources were missed in the previous 8 GHz observations due to a combination of spatial-filtering, poor surface brightness sensitivity and primary beam attenuation. We consider the implications that a significant number of these extended HII regions may have been missed by previous surveys of massive star formation regions. If the original sample of 21 sources is representative of the population as a whole, the fact that 6 contain previously undetected extended free-free emission suggests a large number of regions have been mis-classified. Rather than being very young objects prior to UCHII region formation, they are, in fact, associated with extended HII regions and thus significantly older. In addition, inadvertently ignoring a potentially substantial flux contribution (up to ~0.5Jy) from free-free emission has implications for dust masses derived from sub-mm flux densities. The large spatial scales probed by single-dish telescopes, which do not suffer from spatial filtering, are particularly susceptible and dust masses may be overestimated by up to a factor of ~2., Comment: Accepted MNRAS. 22 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables

We present deep, wide-field, Ks-band (2.14 micron) images towards 87 southern massive star formation regions traced by methanol maser emission. Using point-spread function fitting, we generate 2.14 micron point source catalogues towards each of the regions. For the regions between 10 degrees and 350 degrees galactic longitude and galactic latitude +/- 1 degree, we match the 2.14 micron sources with the GLIMPSE point source catalogue to generate a combined 2.14 to 8.0 micron point source catalogue. We provide this data for the astronomical community to utilise in studies of the stellar content of embedded clusters., Comment: Accepted PASA. PILOT (the Pathfinder for an International Large Optical Telescope is a proposed 2.5 m optical/infrared telescope to be located at DomeC on the Antarctic plateau. The atmospheric conditions at Dome C deliver a high sensitivity, high photometric precision, wide-field, high spatial resolution, and high-cadence imaging capability to the PILOT telescope. These capabilities enable a unique scientific potential for PILOT, which is addressed in this series of papers. The current paper presents a series of projects dealing with the nearby Universe that have been identified as key science drivers for the PILOT facility. Several projects are proposed that examine stellar populations in nearby galaxies and stellar clusters in order to gain insight into the formation and evolution processes of galaxies and stars. A series of projects will investigate the molecular phase of the Galaxy and explore the ecology of star formation, and investigate the formation processes of stellar and planetary systems. Three projects in the field of exoplanet science are proposed: a search for free-floating low-mass planets and dwarfs, a program of follow-up observations of gravitational microlensing events, and a study of infrared light-curves for previously discovered exoplanets. PILOT (the Pathfinder for an International Large Optical Telescope) is a proposed 2.5 m optical/infrared telescope to be located at Dome C on the Antarctic plateau. The atmospheric conditions at Dome C deliver a high sensitivity, high photometric precision, wide-field, high spatial resolution, and high-cadence imaging capability to the PILOT telescope. These capabilities enable a unique scientific potential for PILOT, which is addressed in this series of papers. The current paper presents a series of projects dealing with the distant (redshift >) Universe, that have been identified as key science drivers for the PILOT facility. The potential for PILOT to detect the first populations of stars to form in the early Universe, via infrared projects searching for pair-instability supernovae and gamma-ray burst afterglows, is investigated. Two projects are proposed to examine the assembly and evolution of structure in the Universe: an infrared survey searching for the first evolved galaxies at high redshift, and an optical survey aimed at characterising moderate-redshift galaxy clusters. PILOT (the Pathfinder for an International Large Optical Telescope) is a proposed 2.5 m optical/infrared telescope to be located at Dome C on the Antarctic plateau. Conditions at Dome C are known to be exceptional for astronomy. The seeing (above ~30 m height), coherence time, and isoplanatic angle are all twice s good as at typical mid-latitude sites, while the water-vapour column, and the atmosphere and telescope thermal emission are all an order of magnitude better. These conditions enable a unique scientific capability for PILOT, which is addressed in this series of papers. The current paper presents an overview of the optical and instrumentation suite for PILO and its expected performance, a summary of the key science goals and observational approach for the facility, a discussion of the synergies between the science goals for PILOT and other telescopes, and a discussion of the future of Antarctic astronomy. The central kpc of the Milky Way might be expected to differ significantly from the rest of the Galaxy with regard to gas dynamics and the formation of YSOs. We probe this possibility with mid-infrared observations obtained with IRAC and MIPS on Spitzer and with MSX. We use color-color diagrams and SED fits to explore the nature of YSO candidates (including objects with 4.5 micron excesses possibly due to molecular emission). There is an asymmetry in the distribution of the candidate YSOs, which tend to be found at negative Galactic longitudes; this behavior contrasts with that of the molecular gas, approximately 2/3 of which is at positive longitudes. The small scale height of these objects suggests that they are within the Galactic center region and are dynamically young. They lie between two layers of infrared dark clouds and may have originated from these clouds. We identify new sites for this recent star formation. The methanol masers appear to be associated with young, embedded YSOs characterized by 4.5 micron excesses. We use the SEDs of these sources to estimate their physical characteristics. Within the central 400x50 pc (|l|<1.3\degr and |b|<10') the star formation rate based on the identification of Stage I evolutionary phase of YSO candidates is about 0.14 solar mass/yr. We suggest that a recent burst of star formation took place within the last 10^5 years. This suggestion is also consistent with estimates of star formation rates within the last ~10^7 years showing a peak around 10^5 years ago. Lastly, we find that the Schmidt-Kennicutt Law applies well in the central 400 pc of the Galaxy. We present multi-molecular line maps obtained with the Mopra Telescope towards the southern giant molecular cloud (GMC) complex G333, associated with the HII region RCW 106. We have characterised the GMC by decomposing the 3D data cubes with GAUSSCLUMPS, and investigated spatial correlations among different molecules with principal component analysis (PCA). We find no correlation between clump size and line width, but a strong correlation between emission luminosity and line width. PCA classifies molecules into high and low density tracers, and reveals that HCO+ and N2H+ are anti-correlated., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures accepted by MNRAS

We present the results of a targeted 3-mm spectral line survey towards the eighty-three 6.67 GHz methanol maser selected star forming clumps observed by Purcell et al. 2006. In addition to the previously reported measurements of HCO+ (1 - 0), H13CO+ (1 - 0), and CH3CN (5 - 4) & (6 -5), we used the Mopra antenna to detect emission lines of N2H+ (1 - 0), HCN (1 - 0) and HNC (1 - 0) towards 82/83 clumps (99 per cent), and CH3OH (2 - 1) towards 78/83 clumps (94 per cent). The molecular line data have been used to derive virial and LTE masses, rotational temperatures and chemical abundances in the clumps, and these properties have been compared between sub-samples associated with different indicators of evolution. The greatest differences are found between clumps associated with 8.6 GHz radio emission, indicating the presence of an Ultra-Compact HII region, and `isolated' masers (without associated radio emission), and between clumps exhibiting CH3CN emission and those without. In particular, thermal CH3OH is found to be brighter and more abundant in Ultra-Compact HII (UCHII) regions and in sources with detected CH3CN, and may constitute a crude molecular clock in single dish observations. Clumps associated with 8.6 GHz radio emission tend to be more massive and more luminous than clumps without radio emission. This is likely because the most massive clumps evolve so rapidly that a Hyper-Compact HII or UCHII region is the first visible tracer of star-formation. The gas-mass to sub-mm/IR luminosity relation for the combined sample was found to be L proportional to M**0.68, considerably shallower than expected for massive main-sequence stars.

A new 7-beam 6-7 GHz receiver has been built to survey the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds for newly forming high-mass stars that are pinpointed by strong methanol maser emission at 6668 MHz. The receiver was jointly constructed by Jodrell Bank Observatory (JBO) and the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) and allows simultaneous coverage at 6668 and 6035 MHz. It was successfully commissioned at Parkes in January 2006 and is now being used to conduct the Parkes-Jodrell multibeam maser survey of the Milky Way. This will be the first systematic survey of the entire Galactic plane for masers of not only 6668-MHz methanol, but also 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl. The survey is two orders of magnitude faster than most previous systematic surveys and has an rms noise level of ~0.17 Jy.This paper describes the observational strategy, techniques and reduction procedures of the Galactic and Magellanic Cloud surveys, together with deeper, pointed, follow-up observations and complementary observations with other instruments. It also includes an estimate of the survey detection efficiency. The 111 days of observations with the Parkes telescope have so far yielded >800 methanol sources, of which ~350 are new discoveries. The whole project will provide the first comprehensive Galaxy-wide catalogue of 6668-MHz and 6035-MHz masers., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

Concatenating data from the millimetre regime to the infrared, we have performed spectral energy distribution modelling for 227 of the 405 millimetre continuum sources of Hill et al. (2005) which are thought to contain young massive stars in the earliest stages of their formation. Three main parameters are extracted from the fits: temperature, mass and luminosity. The method employed was Bayesian inference, which allows a statistically probable range of suitable values for each parameter to be drawn for each individual protostellar candidate. This is the first application of this method to massive star formation. The cumulative distribution plots of the SED modelled parameters in this work indicate that collectively, the sources without methanol maser and/or radio continuum associations (MM-only cores) display similar characteristics to those of high mass star formation regions. Attributing significance to the marginal distinctions between the MM-only cores and the high-mass star formation sample we draw hypotheses regarding the nature of the MM-only cores, including the possibility that the population itself is comprised of different types of source, and discuss their role in the formation scenarios of massive star formation. In addition, we discuss the usefulness and limitations of SED modelling and its application to the field. From this work, it is clear that within the valid parameter ranges, SEDs utilising current far-infrared data can not be used to determine the evolution of massive protostars or massive young stellar objects., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables : accepted by MNRAS

Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is an ongoing multi-wavelength observational programme designed to return a large, high-resolution mid-infrared colour-selected sample of massive young stellar objects. Aims: A critical part of our follow-up programme is to conduct 13CO molecular line observations in order to determine kinematic distances to all of our MYSO candidates. These distances will allow us to identify and remove nearby low-mass YSOs and help in identifying evolved stars which are weak CO emitters. Method: We have used the 15 m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), the 13.7 m telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), the 20 m Onsala telescope and the 22m Mopra telescope to conduct molecular line observations towards 508 MYSOs candidates located in the 1st and 2nd Quadrants. Results: We detect 13CO emission towards 780 RMS sources which corresponds to approximately 84% of those observed (911). A total of 2595 emission components are detected above 3sigma level (typically T^*_{\rm{A}} > 0.3K), with multiple components being observed towards the majority of these sources -- 520 sources (~56%) -- with an average of ~4 molecular clouds detected along each line of sight. We have used archival CS (J=2-1) and maser velocities to resolve the component multiplicity towards 175 sources (~20%) and have derived a criterion which is used to identify the most likely component for a further 191 multiple component sources. Combined with the single component detections we have obtained unambiguous kinematic velocities for 638 of the 780 MYSOs candidates towards which CO is detected (~80% of the detections). We present results from a time dependent gas phase chemical model of a hot core based on the physical conditions of G305.2+0.2. While the cyanopolyyne HC_3N has been observed in hot cores, the longer chained species, HC_5N, HC_7N, and HC_9N have not been considered typical hot core species. We present results which show that these species can be formed under hot core conditions. We discuss the important chemical reactions in this process and, in particular, show that their abundances are linked to the parent species acetylene which is evaporated from icy grain mantles. The cyanopolyynes show promise as `chemical clocks' which may aid future observations in determining the age of hot core sources. The abundance of the larger cyanopolyynes increase and decrease over relatively short time scales, ~10^2.5 years. We also discuss several sulphur bearing species. We present results from a non-LTE statistical equilibrium excitation model as a series of density, temperature and column density dependent contour plots which show both the line intensities and several line ratios. These aid in the interpretation of spectral line data, even when there is limited line information available., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

We present a fully sampled C^{18}O (1-0) map towards the southern giant molecular cloud (GMC) associated with the HII region RCW 106, and use it in combination with previous ^{13}CO (1-0) mapping to estimate the gas column density as a function of position and velocity. We find localized regions of significant ^{13}CO optical depth in the northern part of the cloud, with several of the high-opacity clouds in this region likely associated with a limb-brightened shell around the HII region G333.6-0.2. Optical depth corrections broaden the distribution of column densities in the cloud, yielding a log-normal distribution as predicted by simulations of turbulence. Decomposing the ^{13}CO and C^{18}O data cubes into clumps, we find relatively weak correlations between size and linewidth, and a more sensitive dependence of luminosity on size than would be predicted by a constant average column density. The clump mass spectrum has a slope near -1.7, consistent with previous studies. The most massive clumps appear to have gravitational binding energies well in excess of virial equilibrium; we discuss possible explanations, which include magnetic support and neglect of time-varying surface terms in the virial theorem. Unlike molecular clouds as a whole, the clumps within the RCW 106 GMC, while elongated, appear to show random orientations with respect to the Galactic plane., Comment: 17 pages, to appear in MNRAS

We present the results of the first complete survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds for 6668-MHz methanol and 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl masers. In addition to the survey, higher-sensitivity targeted searches towards known star-formation regions were conducted. The observations yielded the discovery of a fourth 6668-MHz methanol maser in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), found towards the star-forming region N160a, and a second 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl maser, found towards N157a. We have also re-observed the three previously known 6668-MHz methanol masers and the single 6035-MHz hydroxyl maser. We failed to detect emission from either transition in the Small Magellanic Cloud. All observations were initially made using the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) survey receiver on the 64-m Parkes telescope as part of the MMB project and accurate positions have been measured with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We compare the maser populations in the Magellanic Clouds with those of our Galaxy and discuss their implications for the relative rates of massive star-formation, heavy metal abundance, and the abundance of complex molecules. The LMC maser populations are demonstrated to be smaller than their Milky Way counterparts. Methanol masers are under-abundant by a factor of ~45, whilst hydroxyl and water masers are a factor of ~10 less abundant than our Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS
