Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised or has already begun to influence absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) science. It is not in the area expected – that of superior modelling of ADME data to increase its predictive power. It is influencing traditional exhaustive and careful literature research by providing almost perfect summaries of existing information. This will highly influence how people study, graduate and progress in the ADME sciences. The literature contains many flaws (protein binding influence on unbound drug concentration is one of the examples cited) and without direction AI may help to popularise them. ADME science has a relatively small number of key assays and values, but these are produced under widely varying conditions so large data sets, the best substrate for artificial intelligence, are not readily available to produce new more predictive systems. The use of AI to enrich the databases may be a near term goal. AI is already contributing in other areas such as technical skill assimilation, maintenance of complex instruments (combined with virtual reality) and the processing of pharmacovigilance. 7. Toric varieties as analytic Zariski structures

Abstract

The possible model theoretic compactifications of a cover of the muliplicative group of a field are discussed. The members of a large class of such compactifications are shown to be covers of toric varieties. The structure of the members of this class is shown to be Analytic Zariski on a dense open subset. Some equivalences between model theoretic notions and those of toric geometry are established. An elimination of imaginaries result is proved for the theory of the covers. The notion of universality for a class is introduced. Some connections with mirror symmetry are discussed.

11. Change Impact--Building a Rural Telecommunications Network.

Abstract

A framework to consider a successful change effort in an organization consists of four elements: conditions for change; manner of initiation; road blocks or facilitators; and lasting results. A specific case study in which this framework can be applied is the process of change in one university. While the immediate manner of initiation was an authoritarian act--the purchase of satellite equipment by one department head--the conditions of change already existed in that a broad base had built up over time for the use of telecommunications to serve rural communities. External forces that led to the initial change effort were the structural economic changes in rural areas and changes in the work force and subsequent training needs. Internal forces included striving within the university and in the state for funds and recognition. Although goals were initially unclear and no input was collected from other levels of the organization, telecommunications programs to outreach sites were subsequently incorporated into the overall mission of the university. Facilitators of the project were a major training effort, creation of television production positions, and resource development. Lasting results were the redistribution and reallocation of funds to use satellite television programming and more collaboration and cooperation with other institutions for the service of the common constituencies, the rural communities. 21. Communication Technology for Rural Communities. A Qualitative Study of Rural Communities, Northeastern Washington State. Summary Report.

Abstract

This report examines the perceptions of rural Washington community leaders concerning community information needs and the role of communication technology. In-depth interviews were conducted with 34 leaders in 5 selected rural eastern Washington communities that had access to telecommunications education and information systems, and with 15 eastern Washington educators with expertise in rural development and telecommunications systems. Community leaders' core concern was community survival. Successful use of telecommunications in rural communities may depend on developing a "rural telecommunications network" (RURALNET) that meets the needs of users, providers, and the network itself. Factors critical to the success of RURALNET include: (1) respect for traditional community and family values; (2) capacity for local and institutional cooperation; (3) local participation in planning; (4) designation of a "natural gathering place" in the community; (5) human capacity building to allow rural citizens access to and planning of RURALNET; (6) collaboration among providers of telecommunications programs and services; and (7) coordination between providers and citizens. In general, there was a positive reception to expansion of telecommunications programs and services in rural areas and optimism that it can help solve some rural community problems. (SV)
