The rapidly expanding severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) and its variants demand a continuous monitoring method through portable and wearable devices. Utilizing the rich surface chemistry and high chemical‐to‐electrical signal conversion of 2D MXene‐graphene heterostructure thin films, a field‐effect‐transistor (FET) sensor, which has a flexible substrate to be assembled onto the mask and combines with a Bluetooth system for wireless transmission is developed, to detect the influenza and SARS‐CoV‐2 viruses in air and breath. At first, the developed sensors are examined in the laboratory through direct contact with sensing targets in solution form. The results show a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1 fg mL−1 for recombinant SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein and 125 copies mL−1 for inactivated influenza A (H1N1) virus with high specificity in differing recombinant SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein and inactivated H1N1 virus. Then the sensors are tested under various simulated human breathing modes through controlled exposure to atomizer‐generated aerosols in an enclosed chamber and mask coverage. The results show the high sensitivity of the developed sensors under varying distances to the source, viral load, flow rate, and enclosed conditions. Pteridines and their derivatives function as intermediates in the metabolism of several vitamins and cofactors, and their relevance to disease has inspired new efforts to study their roles as disease biomarkers. Recent analytical advances, such as the emergence of sensitive mass spectrometry techniques, new workflows for measuring pteridine derivatives in their native oxidation states and increased multiplexing capacities for the simultaneous determination of many pteridine derivatives, have enabled researchers to explore the roles of urinary pteridines as disease biomarkers at much lower levels with greater accuracy than with previous technologies or methods. As a result, urinary pteridines are being increasingly studied as putative cancer biomarkers with promising results being reported from exploratory studies. In addition, the role of urinary neopterin as a universal biomarker for immune system activation is being investigated in new diseases where it is anticipated to become a useful supplementary marker in clinical diagnostic settings. In summary, this review provides an overview of recent developments in the clinical study of urinary pteridines as disease biomarkers, covers the most promising aspects of advanced analytical techniques being developed for the determination of urinary pteridines and discusses the major challenges associated with implementing pteridine biomarkers in clinical laboratory settings.

Repeated exposure to low-level blast overpressures can produce biological changes and clinical sequelae that resemble mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). While recent efforts have revealed several protein biomarkers for axonal injury during repetitive blast exposure, this study aims to explore potential small molecule biomarkers of brain injury during repeated blast exposure. This study evaluated a panel of ten small molecule metabolites involved in neurotransmission, oxidative stress, and energy metabolism in the urine and serum of military personnel (n = 27) conducting breacher training with repeated exposure to low-level blasts. The metabolites were analyzed using HPLC—tandem mass spectrometry, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for statistical analysis to compare the levels of pre-blast and post-blast exposures. Urinary levels of homovanillic acid (p < 0.0001), linoleic acid (p = 0.0030), glutamate (p = 0.0027), and serum N-acetylaspartic acid (p = 0.0006) were found to be significantly altered following repeated blast exposure. Homovanillic acid concentration decreased continuously with subsequent repeat exposure. These results suggest that repeated low-level blast exposures can produce measurable changes in urine and serum metabolites that may aid in identifying individuals at increased risk of sustaining a TBI. The widespread use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) has raised environmental and human health concerns owing to their significant cytotoxicity. Although their cytotoxic effects have been associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS), the physicochemical mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains poorly understood. In this study, the physicochemical properties of ZnO NPs were systematically investigated in relation to their effect on ROS generation. Factors that were found to affect hydroxyl radical (˙OH) generation included: NP concentration, irradiation, NP hydrodynamic size, localized pH, ionic strength, NP zeta-potential, and dissolved oxygen levels. The mechanism by which ˙OH was generated under alkaline conditions was found to obey first-order reaction kinetics that followed the conversion of OH - anions and dissolved O 2 to ˙OH. Based on these findings, we propose that ZnO NP cytotoxicity involves ˙OH adsorption to the nanoparticle surface, creating a highly localized source of ROS capable of potentiating oxidative damage to cellular structures. This hypothesis was evaluated with time-resolved intracellular calcium [Ca] i imaging that irradiated ZnO NPs triggered cytoplasmic calcium influxes and facilitated nuclear degradation. Together these findings present a novel physicochemical mechanism for ˙OH generation from ZnO NPs with significant implications for nanoparticle cytotoxicity and their relation to human health.
