Tea (Camelia sinensis) is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. Research on the nutritional characteristics of tea, particularly lowland tea plantations, is limited in Malaysia. Thus, we aimed to investigate the nutritional characteristics (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe) and antioxidant activity of seven clonal teas (663, 2026, 2024, AT53, TV9, 1294, and 1428) planted at a tropical lowland tea plantation, Bukit Cheeding, Selangor, and their association with the soil edaphic factor. All foliar nutrient concentrations except for Ca and antioxidant activities varied significantly (p<0.05) among tea clones. Clone AT53 had the highest foliar K (1.84 ± 0.7 mg g
-1 ), Mg (0.80 ± 0.3 mg g-1 ), Fe (12.97 ± 1.4 mg g-1 ), and Al (16.61± 1.4 mg g-1 ). Clone 663 had the highest P (13.76 ± 1.06 mg g-1 ), and clone 2026 had the highest N (4.39 ± 0.2%). Clone 1248 had the highest antioxidant activity at 50.66 ± 3.2 µg mL-1 . Tea foliar N and P concentrations were significantly associated with the N and P of the soil. Besides, several soil nutrients were significantly intercorrelated with foliar nutrient concentrations. Results from this study may benefit growers in selecting better quality clones and managing lowland tea plantation at Bukit Cheeding, Selangor, Malaysia. Good farm management may improve the productivity and sustainability of tea plantations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives., publishedVersion

- Abstract
Forest biomass is an essential indicator for monitoring the Earth’s ecosystems and climate. It is a critical input to greenhouse gas accounting, estimation of carbon losses and forest degradation, assessment of renewable energy potential, and for developing climate change mitigation policies such as REDD+, among others. Wall-to-wall mapping of aboveground biomass (AGB) is now possible with satellite remote sensing (RS). However, RS methods require extant, up-to-date, reliable, representative and comparable in situ data for calibration and validation. Here, we present the Forest Observation System (FOS) initiative, an international cooperation to establish and maintain a global in situ forest biomass database. AGB and canopy height estimates with their associated uncertainties are derived at a 0.25ha scale from field measurements made in permanent research plots across the world's forests. All plot estimates are geolocated and have a size that allows for direct comparison with many RS measurements. The FOS offers the potential to improve the accuracy of RS-based biomass products while developing new synergies between the RS and ground-based ecosystem research communities. 1 We evaluate the effects of large-scale disturbance on tropical tree communities by examining the population dynamics of all individuals [is greater than] 4.9 cm in diameter at breast height (d.b.h.) of 12 tree species over 30 years (1964-94) in lowland tropical rain forest on Kolombangara, Solomon Islands. 2 During the study period Kolombangara was struck by four cyclones between 1967 and 1970. The last cyclone caused most damage to canopy structure. Mortality in the 6-month interval spanning the first cyclone was 7.0% of all trees, while mean annual mortality for all other intervals (including those spanning other cyclones) was 1.4-2.2% [year.sup.-1]. Mortality varied between species but was independent of topography and geographical location. 3 Recruitment increased from very low rates (median 0.0% [year.sup.-1]) before the first cyclone to median values of 1.6-3.2% [year.sup.-1] during 1971-79, i.e. following a lag period of 3.5-8 years after the first cyclone. Recruitment rates were higher on plots showing greater mortality rates during this cyclone. Recruitment and mortality rates were still higher in 1994 than they had been before the 1967-70 cyclones. 4 Mean annual mortality rates were positively correlated with mean annual recruitment rates across species. This relationship reflects a continuum of life-history characteristics and contributes to constancy in the relative abundance of the 12 species when the same sets of plots are compared over all measurement intervals up to 30 years. 5 We conclude that cyclone impacts have only short-term effects on the relative abundance of common tree species on Kolombangara, and do not therefore prevent the establishment of an equilibrium rank abundance hierarchy or create spatial variation in tree species composition. Differences in forest composition across Kolombangara are more likely to have been caused by differential anthropogenic disturbance linked to settlement patterns. - Abstract
Questions Species-habitat associations may contribute to the maintenance of species richness in tropical forests, but previous research has been conducted almost exclusively in lowland forests and has emphasized the importance of topography and edaphic conditions. Is the distribution of woody plant species in a Peruvian cloud forest determined by microhabitat conditions? What is the role of environmental characteristics and forest structure in habitat partitioning in a tropical cloud forest? Location Cloud Forest, north Peruvian Andes. Methods We examined species-habitat associations in three 1-ha plots using the torus-translation method. We used three different criteria to define habitats for habitat partitioning analyses, based on microtopography, forest structure and both sets of factors. The number of species associated either positively or negatively with each habitat was assessed. Results Habitats defined on the basis of environmental conditions and forest structure discriminated a greater number of positive and negative associations at the scale of our analyses in a tropical cloud forest. Conclusions Both topographic conditions and forest structure contribute to small-scale microhabitat partitioning of woody plant species in a Peruvian tropical cloud forest. Nevertheless, canopy species were most correlated with the distribution of environmental variables, while understorey species displayed associations with forest structure. © 2012 International Association for Vegetation Science.

The conventional forest management system proposed for the brazilian amazon is not widely applied there (Hummel, 1996). Problems arise because of the heavy investment and large areas of forest needed to implement the system, and the long period required for the forest to regenerate after harvesting combined with the low pr ice of timber in local markets. As a result, formal forest management is designed for large properties where investment potential is high.

Forests and forestry ,Plant sciences - Abstract
Natural forest management in the Solomon Islands is at an important stage of development. Undisturbed forest below the altitudinal limit for logging has mostly been logged at least once, and the remaining unlogged area is under concession. It is therefore inevitable that the focus of forest management will shift from exploitation of pristine forest to management of the large area of logged forest over the next few years. However, the research on which management prescriptions for Solomon Islands forests would be based has only just started, and there is an urgent need for the kind of information required to design appropriate management systems. This Manual collates the published and unpublished information currently available on the silvicultural behaviour and wood properties of the 12 most common timber tree species in Solomon Islands natural forests. Most of the silvics information has been obtained from a recent analysis of data obtained during monitoring of populations of all trees of these species >4.9cm diameter on permanent sample plots on Kolombangara, as part of the Kolombangara Ecological Survey (KES). The KES has been a research project of the Solomon Islands Forest Department since 1964 and the plots have been monitored 15 times over the 30 year interval. The total area of permanent sample plots was 13.9ha in the early phases of the project but has declined over time as plots have been lost to cyclone damage and logging, although nine plots (5.7ha) have been monitored over the full 30 years of the study. The silvics data presented include accounts of species distribution and the ecology and demography of seedlings drawn from previous phases of the KES. The Manual also presents updates of tree growth and mortality rates under natural forest conditions, new data on changes in median and maximum crown exposure with tree size, and population responses to cyclones. Sections on plantation experience and wood properties are included, drawn from other published sources. Thus this Manual brings together in one place a summary of the accumulated knowledge on the twelve species described, which are the main timber-producing species of the Western Solomons. It is hoped that a single reference source will be of value for planning natural forest management. Fuller details on methodology and analysis are not given here but can be found in the source documents on which this Manual is based.

Understanding the ecological mechanisms that constrain forest succession in tropical degraded anthropogenic grasslands is a prerequisite for the design of techniques for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem processes. In this context, succession on post-agricultural lands may be arrested by a variety of site-specific biotic and abiotic factors. Here we synthesise our research on the effects of five biotic factors (seed dispersal, development of a soil seed bank, seedling emergence, herbivory, competition) and five abiotic factors (fire, microclimatic conditions, soil nutrients, water availability, disturbance) as constraints to forest succession on degraded anthropogenic grasslands in a tropical lower montane forest landscape in Sri Lanka. The aim of this research was to deduce ecologically and socially acceptable restoration techniques to accelerate forest recovery. Colonisation of grasslands by trees is constrained by limited seed dispersal from adjacent remnant forest patches and their incorporation into grassland soil seed banks. For the few tree seeds that are dispersed into grasslands, a combination of vertebrate herbivory and annual dry season fires reduces the likelihood that they emerge as seedlings. Removal of the grass canopy by clipping or tilling increases the emergence of woody plant seedlings close to the boundaries of forest patches, but has no effect beyond 20 m into the established grassland. Our research shows that isolation of seedling root systems from those of competing grasses increases the growth and survival of tree seedlings transplanted directly into grassland swards, while above-ground competition and exclusion of vertebrate herbivores has no effects on seedling growth and survival. These experiments identified that the early-successional species Macaranga indica Wight and Symplocos cochinchinensis (Lour.) S. Moore are potential candidates for use in reforestation programmes on abandoned grasslands. We propose a strategy for a model forest restoration programme based on the creation of vegetation islands using early-successional native tree species, the application of a tilling treatment around remnant forest patches, creation of fire breaks around vegetation islands, and the protection of isolated individual trees and tree patches within established grasslands. We highlight the importance of further research on the ecology and biology of seed dispersers and seed predators, and expansion of knowledge on the regeneration traits of native tree species, for future refinements of this restoration strategy. A pot bioassay experiment was established to test the hypotheses that different soil types represented on a 50 ha plot in Pasoh Forest Reserve supply different amounts of nutrients for plant growth, and that phosphorus (P) is the main limiting nutrient. Seedlings of the tree Lagerstroemia floribunda were grown for 54 days in pots of alluvial, shale or laterised-shale soil. The experiment comprised six nutrient addition treatments and an unmanipulated control, with five replicates for each treatment. The growth of seedlings of L. floribunda was limited by the availability of P but not by the other nutrients (N, K, Ca or Mg) added singly in the experiment. Relative growth rates were highest on alluvial and shale-derived soils, which had higher available P concentrations than the laterised shale-derived soils in the absence of nutrient addition. Shifts in biomass allocation and changes to specific leaf area were the mechanisms responsible for the increase in plant growth in response to nutrient addition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropical forests possess exceptional levels of tree species richness but explaining this diversity has presented a long existing challenge. Habitat niche partitioning provides a hypothesis for species co-existence, whereby species avoid competitive exclusion by partitioning demands on multiple resources within an environment. However, limited understanding concerning how tree function is influenced by multiple environmental variables has limited the support for this hypothesis. This knowledge gap also limits our ability to predict how tropical forest tree communities will respond to environmental change, given multiple dimensions of a species' niche are likely to be affected. In this thesis, I investigate the role of niche partitioning in supporting co-existence of species and the turnover of species across edaphic gradients, as well as how long-term changes to the environment from selective logging and drought affect niche space of tropical tree species. I use species distribution models and measurements of leaf physiological traits to determine the key dimensions of tree species' niches in primary forests. In chapter 2 I demonstrate niche partitioning is strong within tropical forests with at least 60-86% of abundant species occupying their own unique niche. Species partition a wide range of abiotic environments, including soil nutrient, topographic and light environments, with greater environmental heterogeneity enhancing the scope for niche partitioning. Building on this, in chapter 3 I find that variation in nutrient availability explains more variation in leaf physiology and habitat preferences than light availability of species from the Dipterocarpaceae family that dominates South-East Asian forests. This highlights the importance of edaphic environments in structuring tropical forest communities. I also find different leaf nutrients are related to photosynthetic capacity in different forest types, revealing that multiple different nutrients may limit productivity and affect species distributions in tropical forests. Many tropical forest tree species are highly specialised with limited ability to adjust their traits between environments, underlining their potential vulnerability to environmental change. In chapter 4 I show seedlings from selectively logged Bornean forests have different community weighted mean trait values, with greater belowground investment in logged forests. These adaptations are sufficient to overcome soil stress and to maintain foliar nutrient concentrations. However, I show seedlings of species that dominate old-growth forests are less able to adapt their traits and experience elevated mortality rates in logged forests. I attribute this to greater soil nutrient limitation as they are unable to maintain leaf nutrient concentrations. Selective logging will therefore likely drive shifts in species composition towards greater dominance of earlier-successional species that have traits capable of surviving in disturbed environments. This could result in local-scale reductions in species diversity and functional diversity, which could reduce long-term resilience to environmental change. In contrast, in Chapter 5 I demonstrate small trees in Amazonian forests are able to respond to changes in their environment following long-term drought conditions. Following mortality of large canopy trees, small trees can respond to increased light availability even under reduced water availability by adjusting resource allocation and by increasing nutrient use efficiency. Despite evidence of resilience to long-term drought conditions, hyper-dominant species show a greater capacity to respond, which may further enhance the dominance of these species under future climates. In conclusion my results highlight the importance of habitat niche partitioning in structuring tropical forest tree communities and identify key environmental variables that determine species distribution and tree function. My results have important implications for the conservation and restoration of tropical forests under environmental change. Avoidance of environmental homogenisation and changes to as few environmental conditions as possible is likely to be important in maintaining high species diversity in tropical forests and to avoid increased dominance by few generalist species. Many current conservation and restoration projects focus on recovering vegetation, but my research highlights the additional need to maintain and restore soil environments, especially for the long-term persistence of highly specialist species.

FOREST dynamics ,PLANT ecology - Abstract
In 1964 a census of all trees > 9.7 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) was conducted on 22 plots totalling 13.2 ha in lowland tropical evergreen rain forest on Kolombangara, Solomon Islands. Over the following 30 yr (1964-1994), populations of all individuals > 4.85 cm DBH of the 12 most common tree species and amounts of disturbance have been monitored on a declining number of these plots (in 1994, nine plotstotalling 5.4 ha were still being recorded). Between November 1967 and April 1970, Kolombangara was struck by four cyclones, although only two of these caused substantial amounts of damage to the canopy structure. Multivariate analysis hits identified six forest types on Kolombangara (Greig-Smith et al. 1967). The species richness and diversity of trees in the 1961 census, turnover rates of the populations monitored over 1964-1975, and the amount of disturbance sustained duringa cyclone in 1970, were all positively correlated across five of theforest types. The sixth forest type was a consistent outlier in these analyses and is believed to have been seriously disturbed by humansabout a century ago. The floristics, turnover and disturbance data support Connell's intermediate disturbance hypothesis. The most species-rich forest types contained a higher proportion of fast-growing individuals are species that are early-successional and which have low density timber. Properties of these species rendered them more susceptible to damage when struck by the 1970 cyclone. They showed higher turnover rates because disturbance-dependent species are also characterised by higher mortality and recruitment rates. Thus, periodic cyclones appear to favour the maintenance of differences in species diversity and composition between forest types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variation in soil nutrient may contribute to species-habitat associations and landscape-scale plant diversity in tropical forests. A nutrient bioassay experiment was used to test the hypotheses that (a) plant growth rate would be greater in more nutrient-rich alluvial soil than in soils taken from low mudstone and sandstone hills in the Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah and that (b) p would be the main limiting nutrient for plant growth in all three soil types. Seedlings of the pioneer tree Neolamarckia cadambawere grown for 45 to 52 days in pots of soil taken from alluvial, mudstone hill and sandstone hill habitats. The experiment comprised six macronutrient addition treatments and a control, with 10 replicates for each treatment. The growth rate of N. cadamba seedlings increased in response to p addition in sandstone hill soil and in response to K in alluvial soil. Relative growth rates were highest in alluvial soil, which had the highest concentrations of available nutrients. We conclude that alluvial, mudstone hill and sandstone hill soils provide contrasting soil chemical environments that are sufficient to induce differential growth rates for N. cadamba seedlings in pots. phosphorus availability was non-limiting for N. cadamba seedlings in the alluvial forest soil, which unmasked limitation by K. - Abstract
There has been widespread clearance of tropical forests for agriculture, but in many cases the cultivation phase is only transient. The secondary forests recovering on these abandoned sites may contribute to mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and protection of biodiversity, but the rates of recovery may be dependent on land-use intensity and changes in soil properties during cultivation. However fine-scale details on these changes are poorly known for many tropical forest locations. We quantified soil properties and recovery of woody biomass in 42 tropical forest fragments representing a chronosequence following two types of agricultural land-uses, and in 15 comparable reference old growth forests, between the Andes and the Amazon in Peru. Soil fertility, particularly base cation concentrations, responded negatively to increasing intensity of agricultural land-use, and either decreased or increased with time after abandonment dependent on prior land-use. The predicted mean recovery rate of woody biomass over the first 20 years following abandonment matched that predicted by a general model for the Neotropics, but recovery was three-fold higher on sites abandoned following traditional agriculture than on sites recovering from intensive agriculture. Estimated total biomass recovered to just above half that of reference old growth forests within 71 years. The inclusion of the biomass of lianas and smaller tree stems did not modify the apparent rate of ecosystem biomass recovery, however the proportion of the total biomass stored in small stems was greater following intensive than traditional agriculture, which suggests that patterns of stand structural development are sensitive to land-use history. We conclude that effects of historic land use on soil nutrient concentrations and their changes through time are required for a more complete interpretation of variation in biomass recovery rates at local scales. These results also highlight the critical importance of contemporary agricultural intensification for carbon storage in tropical forests., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no competing interests., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The data set contains images of leaf venation networks obtained from tree species in Malaysian Borneo. The data set contains 726 leaves from 295 species comprising 50 families, sampled from eight forest plots in Sabah. Image extents are approximately 1 × 1 cm, or 50 megapixels. All images contain a region of interest in which all veins have been hand traced. The complete data set includes over 30 billion pixels, of which more than 600 million have been validated by hand tracing. These images are suitable for morphological characterization of these species, as well as for training of machine-learning algorithms that segment biological networks from images.
