1. Overview of Poisoning Cases in Bursa.

Abstract

Introduction: In this study, our aim is to examine the most common causes of poisoning in our city, to contribute to the epidemiological studies in our country and to ensure the efficient use of the country's resources. Material-Method: In our study, all patients who admitted to the emergency departments of public and private hospitals in Bursa between 01.02.2020 and 31.08.2022 due to poisoning and were reported to the statistical reporting unit of Bursa Provincial Health Directorate were retrospectively evaluated. Results: The gender differences in the causes of poisoning was seen that food-related poisoning was more common in men (n:322-78), and drug-induced poisoning was more common in women (n:363-556) and the difference was found to be statistically significant (x2=217.06, p<0.01). When we evaluated the differences in the causes of poisoning between age groups, it was seen that the lowest intoxication age group was <55 years of age (6.3%, n:111). Corrosive poisonings in the 0-13 age group constitute 72.7% (n:109) of all age groups. Methyl alcohol poisonings are most common in the 36-55 age group. In the chisquare analysis, a statistically significant difference was found between the age groups categorized in terms of the causes of poisoning (x2=641.80, p<0.01). When we look at the outcomes of the patients included in the study, the causes of poisoning in the patients who died were carbon monoxide poisoning (CO) (n:2), drugs (n:1), ethyl alcohol (n:1), were respectively. In addition, the most common cause of poisoning requiring ICU admission was drugs (n:82). When we look at the seasonal differences in the causes of poisoning, poisoning cases with drugs are seen more than other factors in every season, while CO is seen more in winter, food releated in summer and musrooms in autumn. The causes of poisoning show a statistically significant difference in terms of seasons (x2=565.35, p<0.01). Conclusions: Analysis of local causes in a region is very important in poisoning. In this way, measures specific to that region can be taken. In this way, antitoxin planning and manpower planning can be made more effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The historic reconstruction of residential land cover is of significance to uncover the humanenvironment relationship and its changing dynamics. Taking into account the historical census data and cadastral maps of seven villages, this study generated residential land cover maps for the Bursa Region in the 1850s using a model based on natural constraints, land zoning, socio-economic factors and residential suitability. Two different historical reconstructions were generated; one based on a high density residential model and another based on a low density model. The simulated landcover information was used as an ancillary data to redistribute aggregated census counts to fine scale raster cells. Two different statistical models were developed; one based on probability maps and the other applying regression models including Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) models. The regression models were validated with historical census data of the 1840s. From regression models, socio-economic and physical characteristics, accessibility and natural amenities showed significant impacts on the distribution of population. Model validation analysis revealed that GWR is more accurate than OLS models. The generated residential land cover and gridded population datasets can provide a basis for the historical study of population and land use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3. An Assessment of the Seismicity of the Bursa Region from a Temporary Seismic Network.

Abstract

A temporary earthquake station network of 11 seismological recorders was operated in the Bursa region, south of the Marmara Sea in the northwest of Turkey, which is located at the southern strand of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ). We located 384 earthquakes out of a total of 582 recorded events that span the study area between 28.50-30.00°E longitudes and 39.75-40.75°N latitudes. The depth of most events was found to be less than 29 km, and the magnitude interval ranges were between 0.3 ≤ M ≤ 5.4, with RMS less than or equal to 0.2. Seismic activities were concentrated southeast of Uludag Mountain (UM), in the Kestel-Igdir area and along the Gemlik Fault (GF). In the study, we computed 10 focal mechanisms from temporary and permanents networks. The predominant feature of the computed focal mechanisms is the relatively widespread near horizontal northwest-southeast (NW-SE) T-axis orientation. These fault planes have been used to obtain the orientation and shape factor (R, magnitude stress ratio) of the principal stress tensors (σ, σ, σ). The resulting stress tensors reveal σ closer to the vertical (oriented NE-SW) and σ, σ horizontal with R = 0.5. These results confirm that Bursa and its vicinity could be defined by an extensional regime showing a primarily normal to oblique-slip motion character. It differs from what might be expected from the stress tensor inversion for the NAFZ. Different fault patterns related to structural heterogeneity from the north to the south in the study area caused a change in the stress regime from strike-slip to normal faulting. 4. Lead in Particulate Deposits and in Leaves of Roadside Plants.

Abstract

Lead concentrations were determined for particulates, which were deposited on the leaves of roadside plants in Bursa city of Turkey. The particulates were collected from the leaves and the lead accumulated by the leaves of different species were also measured. A statistically significant correlation was found between the number of passing petrol-fueled vehicles and lead concentrations in the deposits at different designated sites. However, no significant correlation was found between concentration in the deposits and lead accumulated by the leaves. A lead concentration of 32.00 ± 6.8 ppm was the highest concentration in the particulate deposits, while maximum lead accumulated by the leaves was noted as 3.15 ± 1.12 ppm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsünde Haluk Başar'ın danışmanlığında Serhat Gürel tarafından hazırlanan "Bursa yöresinde armut plantasyonlarında görülen mikro besin elementleri (Fe, Zn ve B) noksanlıklarının teşhisi ve giderilmesi" adlı doktora tezine dayanılarak hazırlanmıştır. Bu araştırma, Bursa yöresindeki armut (Pyrus communis L.) bahçelerinin makro bitki besin elementleri yönünden beslenme durumlarının belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bu amaçla, yöreyi temsil edecek şekilde 76 adet armut bahçesinden toprak ve yaprak örnekleri alınmıştır. Toprakların toplam N, yarayışlı P, değişebilir Mg ve Ca, konsantrasyonlarının çoğunlukla yeterli konsantrasyonlarda olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bahçe topraklarının büyük kısmının K konsantrasyonları yönünden yetersiz olduğu belirlenmiştir. Yaprak analiz sonuçlarına göre; N genellikle yeterli düzeyde bulunurken, ağaçların yarısında K, Ca ve Mg yetersiz düzeyde bulunmuştur. Yaprak örneklerinin tamamında ise fosfor konsantrasyonları bakımından bir eksiklik görülmemiştir. This research was carried out to determine the macro nutrient status of pear orchards, planted in Bursa region, by means of soil and plant analysis. For this purpose 76 pear gardens were determined. According to the results of the analysis total N, available P, exchangeable Mg, and Ca contents were sufficient. The amount of exchangeable K contents were insufficient in soils. Considering the results of leaf analysis, contents of N were found to be generally sufficient. Half of the trees were sufficient for K, Ca and Mg contents. Also P was found to be above the limit values in all samples.

7. Determination of arsenic contamination in water samples obtained from Bursa reqion

Bu çalışma, Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimler Enstitüsünde Selahattin Ceylan 'in danışmanlığında Recep Serdar Erdöl tarafından yazılan "Bursa yöresinde içme ve kullanma sularında arsenikle kirlenmenin araştırılması" adlı yüksek lisans tezine dayanılarak hazırlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada Bursa şehir merkezi, ilçeler ve çevreleri, kır çeşmeleri, kuyu suları ve sığır çiftliklerinden alınan su numunelerinde spektrofotometrik yöntemle arsenik düzeyleri araştırıldı. Numunelerin % 93.68 inde en düşük 0,051 ppb, en yüksek 21,423 ppb ve ortalama 3, 777 ± 0,477 ppb arsenik bulundu. Arsenik rastlantı oranları şehit merkezi numunelerinde % 91,66, ilçeler ve çevrelerinde % 86 ,95, çiftlik numunelerinde % 94, 73, kır çeşmeleri ve kuyu sularında % 100 olarak saptandı. Bulunan arsenik düzeylerinin W.H.O., U.S.E.P.A. ve Türkiye'nin kabul ettiği tolerans limitinden düşük olduğu ve Bursa yöresinde sularındaki arsenik kontaminasyonunun insan ve hayvan sağlığı açısından risk oluşturmayacağı kanısına varıldı. In this work arsenic levels were determined by spectrophotometry in the water samples of Bursa city center, nearby towns and surroundings and cattle farms. In 93,68% of the samples minimal and maximal arsenic concentrations were 0,051-21,423 ppb respectively and the mean level was 3, 777± 0,477 ppb. Arsenic residue incidences of the water samples were determined as 96.66% in Bursa city center, 86,95% in the nearby towns and surroundings, 94,73% in the cattle farms and 100 % in the countryside (natural spring waters) and wells. Since arsenic concentrations foımd in all samples were low from the arsenical tolerans levels of W.H.O.. U.S.E.P.A. and Turkey, it was concluded that the arsenic contamination of waters in Bursa and its surroundings do not pose any risk for human and animal health.

8. Toxicological properties of the important poisonous plants grown in Bursa region

Bu çalışma, Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsünde Selahattin Ceylan'in danışmanlığında Orhan Yılmaz tarafından yazılan "Bursa yöresinde yetişen önemli zehirli bitkilerin toksikolojik özellikleri" adlı doktora tezine dayanılarak hazırlanmıştır. Bu araştırmada, Bursa yöresinde yetişen zehirli bitkilerin belirlenmesi amacıyla 1988-1989 yıllarını kapsayan iki yıllık bir tarama yapıldı. Dotura stramonium, Hyoscyamus niger, Digitalis ferruginea, Cionura erecta ve Helleborus orientalis türlerinin ağız yoluyla farelerdeki LD 50 değerleri belirlendi. Saponaria officinalis yapraklarının hemoliz ve köpürme indileri hesaplandı ve tavşanların kan tablosunda meydana getirdiği değişiklikler incelendi. D. stramonium, H. niger, D. ferruginea, Quercus petraea, Q. pubescens ve Q. robur subsp. robur'un içerdiği zehirli maddelerin miktar tayinleri yapıldı. Bu çalışmalara ek olarak D. stramonium, H. niger, Senecio aquaticus subsp. erraticus, Melilotus officinalis, D. ferruginea ve H. orientalis'in etken maddeleri ince tabaka ve kağıt kromatografisi ile analiz edildi. In this research a two years survey, during 1988-1989 was made to investigate poisonous plants in Bursa Region. The oral LD 50 values of Datura stramonium, Hyoscyamus niger, Digitalis ferruginea, Cionura erecta and Helleborus orientalis were determined in mice. The saponification and haemolytic indexes of Saponario officinalis were estimated. Effects of S. officinalis on haematological values of rabbits after feeding with that plant leaves were investigated. Poisonous active substance amounts of D. stramonium, H. niger, D. ferruginea, Quercus petraea, Q. pubescens and Q. robur subsp. robur were calculated. In addition, active substances of D. stramonium, H. niger, D. ferruginea, H. orientalis, Senecio aquaticus subsp. erraticus and Melilotus officinalis were analysed by thin layer and paper chromatography.

Bu çalışma, 27-30 Haziran 1991 tarihlerinde Bursa[Türkiye]'da düzenlenen I. Anatomi Kongresinde bildiri olarak sunulmuştur. Çalışmamızda Bursa bölgesindeki çocuklara ait CT görüntüleri üzerinde normal ventriculus Lateralis büyüklüğü ile ilgili olarak bifrontal ve bikaudat genişlik oranları saptandı. 0-17 yaşlan arasında 25 laz ve 19 erkek olmak üzere toplam 44 kişiye ait nominal CT görüntüleri ölçüm için kullanıldı. Bifrontal oran kızlarda 28.24 +. 5.30 (ortalama ve standart sapma), erkeklerde 28.63 + 5.29; bikaudat genişlik oranı kızlarda 10.36 + 2.74, erkeklerde 10.11 + 2.47 olarak tespit edildi. Bulgularımız arasında cinsiyete göre anlamlı fark saptanmadı. Bursa bölgesi çocuklarına ilişkin ortalama değerlerin başka toplumlara ait çocukların ortalamalarından anlamlı olarak küçük olduğu görüldü. In our study, it was aimed to determine ratios of bifrontal and bicaudate widths related to the size of normal lateral ventricle systems on CT of children in the Bursa Area. BFR and BCR were calculated on normal CT seans belonging to 44 children (19 boys and 25 girls 0.17 years of age). BFR was determined in boys as 28.63 + 5.29 (mean + SD) and girls as 28.24 + 5.30. BCR was determined in boys as 10.11 + 2.47 and girls 10.36 + 2.74. In our findings no significant differences to sex could be demonstrated. The mean values of Bursa children were significantly less than the values of other population.

10. Evaluation of some dry bean cultivars asa second crop in Bursa region

Abstract

Bölgemizin sulanır tarım alanlarında bir yılda iki ürün alabilme bakımından belirli bir potansiyeli vardır. Bursa 'da buğday hasadından sonra yaklaşık 120 güne varan devrede bölgemiz ekolojik koşullarına uygun, vegetasyon süresi kısa, üstün verimli fasulye çeşitlerini belirlemek amacı ile bu çalışma yapılmıştır. Denemelerde verim ve erkencilik bakımından yapılan değerlendirmeler sonu cu; bölgemizde birinci ve ikinci ürün olarak yetiştirilen Horoz oturak-1 fasulye çeşidinden yaklaşık bir ay erken olgunlaşan ancak verimleri % 4. 75 (5 No 'lu) ve % 12.86 (B No 'lu) oranında düşük bulunan çeşitlerin ikinci ürün fasulye tarımı için daha uygun olacağı düşünülmektedir. Potentially two cash crops can be produced every year under irrigated condi tions of the region. This research work was made in order to determine earlymaturing and high-ywlding dry bean cultivars asa second crop for ecological corıditions of Bursa. In this region after wheat harvest 120-day growing period is avai labk for second crop. The experiments showed that two dry bean strains (No 5 and B) matured appro;ıçimately 1 month earlier but yklded 4. 75 and 12.B6 % lower than local check cullivar Horoz Oturak-1 grown as a first and second crop in the region. lt was conduded that these two strains will be more suitable for second crop purposes in the region.
