Abstract

We introduce the AusTraits database - a compilation of values of plant traits for taxa in the Australian flora (hereafter AusTraits). AusTraits synthesises data on 448 traits across 28,640 taxa from field campaigns, published literature, taxonomic monographs, and individual taxon descriptions. Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological attributes (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects of ecological variation. AusTraits contains curated and harmonised individual- and species-level measurements coupled to, where available, contextual information on site properties and experimental conditions. This article provides information on version 3.0.2 of AusTraits which contains data for 997,808 trait-by-taxon combinations. We envision AusTraits as an ongoing collaborative initiative for easily archiving and sharing trait data, which also provides a template for other national or regional initiatives globally to fill persistent gaps in trait knowledge.

25. World War 2 governmental cost-plus procurement: An Australian case study.

Abstract

The much-maligned cost-plus contract used in the procurement of defence assets has received little attention in the accounting history literature focused on accounting and the military in times of war. An extensive archive of a World War 2 contract between the Australian government and the UK De Havilland Aircraft Company for the supply of Tiger Moth airframes provides an opportunity to investigate important features of this contract, including cost recording and disclosure, monitoring of cost data by government inspectors, resolution of uncontracted events and evidence of government action to mitigate risks associated with this form of contracting. We also broaden the extant literature on open-book accounting on the premise that government access to the contractor's costing system constitutes a strong subset of this phenomenon. Finally, the batch-costing techniques utilised show strong evidence of 'learning' in respect of direct labour costs, consistent with this feature of cost behaviour in aircraft assembly. 29. Supermarket Botany

Abstract

Supermarket Botany is a frequently-used teaching resource or strategy. It draws on a student's existing familiarity with plant-based foods to explore plant structure and life cycles. One of its strongest points is that it is adaptable to many age levels--from lower primary school to university and general interest groups. We have designed a unique web-based resource that features accurate botanical information in an engaging format, combining a tutorial with an interactive test. High-quality photographic images of key morphological features allow students to interpret the structures they are observing. Teachers can use the website as a stand-alone application or as a resource for previewing/reviewing this material before/after a hands-on laboratory class. Evaluations have shown that this web-based application can result in similar learning outcomes to a traditional laboratory-based session. (Contains 2 tables, 8 figures and 5 online resources.)

31. Cheating ‘Jack Tar’: seafarers’ wages in Britain’s Royal Navy, 1754–1767

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe introduction of the Navy Act of 1758by the British Parliament was designed to provide a mechanism whereby the payment of wages and allowances to Royal Navy seafarers and their dependants would be placed on a more equitable footing through more timely remittances. This study challenges earlier claims made concerning the effectiveness of the Act in this regard. By utilising modern accrual accounting techniques, we demonstrate conclusively how, over a 14-year period of war and peace (1754–1767) that included the promulgation of the Act, seafarers were forced to endure longer periods for payment seemingly at odds with the desires of Parliament. We provide explanations regarding this phenomenon showing seafarers were ensnared in a macro-level public-finance policy agenda that strictly prioritised the credit status of the Royal Navy through the timely payment of Navy bills at the expense of the day-to-day survival needs of seafarers. In order to maintain reputation and ensure the ongoing supply of materials, we show that accounting technologies, in the form of parliamentary budgetary processes and Treasury and Royal Navy cash management practices, were used to deliver this outcome.

Abstract

Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological parameters (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects of ecological variation. AusTraits contains curated and harmonised individual-, species- and genus-level observations coupled to, where available, contextual information on site properties. This data descriptor provides information on version 2.1.0 of AusTraits which contains data for 937243 trait-by-taxa combinations. We envision AusTraits as an ongoing collaborative initiative for easily archiving and sharing trait data to increase our collective understanding of the Australian flora.

Abstract

Corporate failure exposes employees to the possible loss of sums due as deferred benefits such as arise from annual leave entitlements. Through such deferred benefits, employees are significant, often involuntary, providers of working capital to their employer. They are not necessarily adequately compensated for the risk involved, nor able to influence corporate governance in the ways available to other creditors. These issues have been largely neglected in the debate to date, and they provide the focus for an evaluation of alternative policies which have been proposed (or implemented) for protecting employee entitlements.

42. Profit sharing in Australian Big 6 accounting firms: an exploratory study

Abstract

The organizational structures of the six biggest accounting firms in Australia and the profit-sharing programs offered in their Melbourne offices were examined. The Big Six comprises Arthur Andersen, Coopers & Lybrand, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young, KMPG and Price Waterhouse. The study focused on the distribution of profits between partners in these organizations, the organizational settings in which profit sharing takes place and the motivation for preferring a particular profit-sharing arrangement over another. The findings provide support for the 'portfolio' and agency interpretations of partnerships. They also show marked differences between firms in the ranges of profit shares given to established partners, although these partners expected a remuneration range of 2.0.

46. New Voices: The usefulness of a narrative approach to social work research

Abstract

For many new academics, coming to a decision about which research methodology to employ for their doctoral studies can be daunting. Faced with numerous options, sometimes contradictory advice from experienced scholars and a desire to find the perfect match for a research question, one can find the decision to opt for a particular methodological path a huge step, and it can be hindered by nagging concerns and a lack of academic experience. This article draws together two short pieces of writing from PhD students at Lancaster University, who attended and were inspired by a workshop on narrative methods, led by Professor Catherine Kohler Riessman. The first piece is a reflective account of why the author was drawn to narrative methods for her research. It explores the impact of charities and how this is articulated qualitatively, within the context of a mixed market approach to welfare and health service provision in the UK. It discusses what she observes to be the parallels between a narrative research approach and her practice as a social worker and details her experience of completing her first narrative interview. The second is about how the author was inspired by the workshop to produce a pilot study on attitudes of male offenders towards violence against women using the narrative approach and including excerpts from his research data. Finally, it draws together their thoughts about the workshop and how they intend to continue working with narratives in their future.

47. The importance of seasonality in the timing of flora surveys in the South and Central Western Slopes of New South Wales

Abstract

Semi-permanent quadrats, located in the South and Central Western Slopes botanical regions of New South Wales, were assessed to indicate suitable periods of the year to conduct surveys of botanical diversity. The quadrats were located in woodland communities with a generally herbaceous understorey, and subject to a wide range of domestic stock grazing intensities. In the mid to western South Western Slopes (SWS) the greatest number of species was generally recorded in an October survey. The main exception was in degraded areas (low species diversity, high proportion of annual weed species), where similar results were recorded in September and October. In the cooler and wetter eastern SWS a relatively high proportion of species were recorded in October to early December surveys. However, when compared to species totals compiled from multiple assessments in all seasons, or from August to November, a single optimal survey usually recorded only 60–75% of the plant species at a site. Surveys in mid to late summer, autumn and early winter usually recorded less than 50% of the plant species present. The results reflect the prevailing Mediterranean-type climate, and that the ground layer vegetation (primarily comprised of annuals and herbaceous perennials) dominates the species diversity.

48. An assessment of the conservation status of Senecio garlandii, in the Central and South Western Slopes, New South Wales

Abstract

Senecio garlandii F. Muell. ex Belcher (Asteraceae) is a perennial subshrub found mainly on rocky outcrops in the South Western Slopes, New South Wales. It is listed as vulnerable in state, national and international listings. An assessment of its conservation status found i) Senecio garlandii has been recorded from about ten localities, ii) it has a relatively large (225 km) north to south distribution from Temora, NSW to Chiltern, Vic., iii) most populations were either within the reserve system (Ulandra, The Rock, Table Top Nature Reserves) or in areas managed for conservation, iv) large populations (> 30,000 individuals) were recorded at The Rock and Table Top Nature Reserves, v) the species appeared capable of regenerating in both the absence and presence of fire, and vi) the populations did not appear to be under direct threat. However, the known localities were highly disjunct and only three localities had substantiated recordings of large populations, while others had very small populations (e.g. < 200 individuals at Ulandra Nature Reserve). In addition, the species was largely restricted to rocky outcrops and on these it was generally restricted to the upper parts of the east- to south-facing talus slopes, often immediately below cliff lines (a small area of occupancy). Application of the IUCN red list criteria would indicate that Senecio garlandii should not be classified as vulnerable. Monitoring is needed to determine whether the populations are in decline or otherwise.

49. A survey of 25 remnant vegetation sites in the South Western Slopes, New South Wales

Abstract

A presence/absence survey of 25 remnant vegetation sites, principally Nature Reserves and State Forests, was carried out in the South Western Slopes (SWS) of New South Wales. A total of 658 taxa were recorded of which 188 (29%) were exotics. Eleven sites had an overstorey dominated by Callitris glaucophylla or Eucalyptus camaldulensis and 14 sites had an overstorey dominated by various eucalypt species such as Eucalyptus blakelyi, Eucalyptus goniocalyx, Eucalyptus macrorhyncha, Eucalyptus polyanthemos, Eucalyptus rossii and Eucalyptus sideroxylon. The Callitris glaucophylla/Eucalyptus camaldulensis dominated sites were in the western half of the region, were flatter and at lower elevation (average minimum and maximum elevations were 191 and 214 m, respectively), were smaller (average area 646 ha), were usually grazed more intensely, had a smaller average number of species per site (151) and a larger average percentage of introduced species (40%). In contrast, the sites dominated by various eucalypt species were usually in the eastern half of the region, had greater relief and were at higher elevation (average minimum and maximum elevations were 294 and 520 m, respectively), were larger (average area 1161 ha), were usually grazed less intensively, had a larger average number of species per site (179) and a smaller average percentage of introduced species (27%). This study provides the first published set of relatively comprehensive species lists for the SWS and has provided information relevant to species distribution, proportion of introduced species in the flora, threatened species, areas of conservation significance and directions for future research.
