Some severe burn injuries may warrant amputation; however, the physical and functional adjustments resulting from postburn amputation can have long-term consequences. This study investigates longitudinal functional and psychosocial outcomes among pediatric burn amputees. Pediatric participants enrolled in the Burn Model System national longitudinal, multicenter database between 2015 and 2023 with postburn amputations were included. Participants with amputations were matched using nearest-neighbor matching to those without amputations based on burn location, age, and % total burn surface area burn size. Primary outcomes were the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Pediatric-25 Profile v2.0 Physical Function and the Children Burn Outcomes Questionnaire: appearance subscore, both measured at 6-, 12-, and 24 months postburn. In this study, 17 participants had amputations, and 17 did not (matched participants). Pairwise analyses at each timepoint found those with amputations reported significantly lower physical function scores at 24 months postburn (54.9 ± 11.6 vs 66 ± 5, P = .013). No significant differences were found in appearance scores. This study suggests that pediatric burn amputees may potentially face greater physical impairment long-term, highlighting an important area of research that deserves further attention., (© The Author(s) 2024. Mental health is a component of care that should be addressed for patients with burns while they are hospitalized. Unfortunately, dedicated burn psychotherapists are rare in burn centers in the United States (US), and it can take months for patients to be seen by a mental health professional after referral. Our burn center has a dedicated licensed clinical social worker who sees patients within 2 business days of referral. She uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is designed to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and acute stress by modifying the individual's maladaptive thoughts. To evaluate the timely use of CBT as a treatment for depression in patients with burns, we measured depressive symptoms before and after psychotherapy. Burn clinic nurses administered the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) depression screener as part of standard care. We computed difference scores to determine the change in PHQ-9 scores at both group and individual levels. At a group level, psychotherapy significantly improved symptoms of depression, indicated by a decreased mean PHQ-9 score. On an individual level, half of the patients (50.7%) experienced a meaningful improvement in their symptoms, indicated by a change in their PHQ-9 depression category, while 35.6% showed no change. Although it was not an effective solution for all patients in this study, timely use of CBT could be an important component of burn care for many and should be considered as part of standard care in burn centers across the US., (© The Author(s) 2024. Despite the growing incidence of burn injuries globally and the advancements in physical recovery, the psychological aspect of burn trauma recovery remains inadequately addressed. This review aims to consolidate existing literature on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in adult burn survivors, recognizing the need for a holistic approach to burn recovery that encompasses both physical and mental health. The comprehensive analysis of 156 studies revealed significant variations in methodological approaches, leading to challenges in creating standardized protocols for mental health assessment in burn care. Key findings include the identification of a wide range of psychological assessment tools and a substantial research gap in low- and middle-income countries, where the majority of burn injuries occur. Only 7.0% of the studies assessed interventions for PTSD or depression, indicating a lack of focus on treatment modalities. The studies identified demographic factors, patient history, psychosocial factors, burn injury characteristics, and treatment course as risk factors for PTSD and depression postburn injury. The review highlights the need for early screening, intervention, and attention to subjective experiences related to burn injury, as these are strong predictors of long-term psychological distress. Adequate and effective pain management and prevention of depression are essential in patients with burns. This study aims to explore the effects of ketamine sedation in patients with burns in terms of mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and suicidality during postoperative follow-up in the intensive care unit. This study targeted subjects aged 18-65 years, in the ASA I-II class, with basic communication skills, no history of diagnosed mental illness, and no history of neuropsychiatric or cognitive disorders or related treatment. The study was conducted on 67 patients. After preoxygenation, anesthesia induction was practiced with 2 mg/kg intravenous (IV) propofol and 1 mcg/kg IV fentanyl in the general anesthesia group. Anesthesia was continued with a mixture of 0.3-0.5 mcg/kg/min remifentanil, 2% sevoflurane, 50% air, and 50% oxygen. In the sedation group, 1 mcg/kg IV fentanyl and 1 mg/kg IV ketamine were administered at induction; anesthesia was maintained by adding 30-50 mg IV propofol if necessary. The Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI) have been administered via way of means of a psychiatrist preoperatively and on the primary postoperative day. In intragroup evaluations, MADRS values for the sedation anesthesia group decreased statistically significantly after the anesthesia (11.63 ± 5.49) compared to the preanesthesia period (14.44 ± 7.22) (P < .001). HAM-A scores of both anesthesia groups decreased statistically significantly after anesthesia. No patient was found to have suicidal ideation in all evaluations in which BSSI was used. Patients with burns may have a high potential for depression, anxiety disorders, and suicidal tendencies due to the trauma they have experienced. In these patients, sedation anesthesia with ketamine may reduce negative mood, depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies in the postoperative period., (© The Author(s) 2024. The prevalence of psychological symptoms in burn survivors has been well documented; however, the role of biological sex requires further investigation. This study explored sex differences among burn survivors and examined the impact of sex, age, and total body surface area (TBSA) of the burn injury on the risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression and, subsequently, the influence of initial risk on symptom outcomes 30 days postinjury. Participants included 374 adult patients enrolled in the Burn Behavioral Health program at a regional Burn Center. T-tests and chi-square tests were conducted to determine differences between sexes on outcome measures. A path analysis was conducted to evaluate relationships between variables of interest. Findings revealed significant sex discrepancies in risk and symptom outcomes. Compared to men, women reported greater total risk scores of developing PTSD and depression (P = .005) early after their burn injury. A subscale analysis showed that women reported greater risk scores for depression (P < .001), but not on PTSD. Women did not report higher depression scores 30 days postinjury compared to men but did report higher PTSD scores than men (P = .020). When sex, age, and TBSA were included in a path analysis, female sex (P = .001), younger age (P < .001), and larger TBSA of the burn injury (P = .024) were associated with greater risk. In addition, risk scores significantly predicted PTSD (P < .001) and depression (P < .001) symptoms 30 days postinjury. Our research shows how sex, age, and TBSA affect the risk of PTSD and depression among burn survivors. It underscores the importance of accounting for sex and age differences in mental health risk, especially in women and younger patients. Background: Despite known inequalities, little is understood about the burden and healthcare experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who sustain a burn injury and their families., Methods: The Coolamon Study recruited parents and carers whose children (aged <16 years) were Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander children and had presented to burn units across four Australian states, New South Wales (Sydney), Northern Territory (Darwin), Queensland (Brisbane, Townsville) and South Australia (Adelaide), between 2015 and 2018. Consent was obtained and carers completed baseline and subsequent interviews at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. Data were collected on the injury event, patient care and safety, sociodemographic factors, health related quality of life (PedsQual), and psychological distress (Kessler K-5)., Results: Of the 208 participants, 64 % were male; 26 % were aged less than 2 years and 37 % aged 2-4 years. The most common burn mechanisms were scalds (37 %), contact (33 %) and flame burns (21 %), with more severe burns and flame burns occurring in rural and remote settings. Most carers rated their child's care as either excellent or very good (82 %). Family distress, measured by the K-5, lessened over the 24 months, however the changes were not statistically significant. While 77 % of carers reported that they received enough information, 18 % reported they would have liked more, and 3 % reported no information was provided before treatment. Introduction: Appearance concerns are common following burns. However, there is a lack of research investigating early psychological interventions for appearance concerns. This qualitative study explored the acceptability of early psychological interventions for appearance concerns after burns., Methods: Fifteen adults (nine female; 18-56 years) with appearance concerns were interviewed within three months post-burn to explore their views about the acceptability of early psychological interventions for these concerns. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Template analysis informed data collection and analysis., Results: Three themes represented participants' views about the acceptability of early psychological interventions for appearance concerns: (1) early psychological interventions are absent; (2) early psychological interventions are acceptable within a therapeutic relationship (to manage upsetting emotions and thoughts about appearance, with therapists who are experienced in supporting burns patients); and (3) ambivalence and obstacles exist (e.g., difficulties accepting help, minimising injuries or concerns, and time restrictions following hospital discharge)., Conclusion: Early psychological interventions for appearance concerns following burns are likely to be acceptable for some patients. However, ambivalence and potential barriers remain to be addressed. Background: Spanish-speaking trauma and burn patients have unique needs in their postdischarge care navigation. The confluence of limited English proficiency, injury recovery, mental health, socioeconomic disadvantages, and acute stressors after hospital admission converge to enhance patients' vulnerability, but their specific needs and means of meeting these needs have not been well described., Study Design: This prospective, cross-sectional survey study describes the results of a multi-institutional initiative devised to help Spanish-speaking trauma and burn patients in their care navigation after hospitalization. The pathway consisted of informational resources, intake and follow-up surveys, and multiple points of contact with a community health worker who aids in accessing community resources and navigating the healthcare system., Results: From January 2022 to November 2023, there were 114 patients identified as eligible for the Non-English-Speaking Trauma Survivors pathway. Of these, 80 (70.2%) were reachable and consented to participate, and 68 were approached in person during their initial hospitalization. After initial screening, 60 (75.0%) eligible patients had a mental health, social services, or other need identified via our survey instrument. During the initial consultation with the community health worker, 48 of 60 patients with any identified need were connected to a resource (80%). Food support was the most prevalent need (46, 57.5%). More patients were connected to mental health resources (16) than reported need in this domain (7)., Conclusions: The Non-English-Speaking Trauma Survivors pathway identified the specific needs of Spanish-speaking trauma and burn patients in their recovery, notably food, transportation, and utilities. Objective: Pain and anxiety are common complications in burn patients, significantly impacting treatment effectiveness and overall patient well-being. Peer counseling, a form of patient education provided by individuals with shared experiences, may hold potential to alleviate this pain and anxiety. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of patient-centered education through peer counseling on background pain and state anxiety levels in these patients., Methods: A two-arm, parallel, randomized, controlled trial design was employed. A total of 86 participants were randomly allocated to one of two groups: control and intervention groups. State anxiety and background pain levels were assessed using the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), respectively, before and after intervention. Statistical analyses, including Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, and paired t-test, were employed to analyze the data., Results: The intervention significantly reduced pain and anxiety in the intervention group compared to baseline (p < .001). There was no significant difference between the control and intervention groups in baseline levels, but there was a significant difference after the intervention (p < .001)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates the efficacy of patient-centered education through peer counseling in reducing background pain and state anxiety levels in burn patients. A few studies have examined post-traumatic growth (PTG) after burns, a relatively new area of research. To understand how to promote PTG in burn survivors, we need to know how PTG and coping are presented, how they change over time, and the components that influence development. Based on the criteria of the PRISMA statement, we conducted our initial search on 1 February 2023. This study systematically reviewed relevant studies in five PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus and Science Direct search databases. The search used the following keywords: Post-traumatic Growth, Psychological Growth, Post-traumatic Growth, Psychological, PTG, Burns and Burn. The two researchers evaluated the quality of the included studies using a 20-item tool called the appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies (AXIS tool). A total of 1396 burn patients participated in 12 studies. Among the studies included in this systematic review, seven were cross-sectional, and five were cohort. The average age of the patients in this study was 35.77 (SD = 10.19). Among the participants, 52.4% were men. The total body surface area (TBSA) percentage in these patients was 32.77 (SD = 16.42). The mean of PTG inventory (PTGI) was 54.08 (SD = 20.46) out of 105, which is a moderate level. Factors such as coping strategies, perceived social support, TBSA, religion/spirituality and severity of burn are positive factors for PTG in burn survivors. Also, factors such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and physical and mental recovery are negative factors for PTG in burn survivors. These factors can be improved through targeted intervention strategies, including overall function, quality of life, social support, optimism, hope and new opportunities. Introduction: Burn survivors often experience a plethora of post-burn residual needs following their discharge including psychological issues and poor sleep. These needs are often overlooked with a significant focus on resolving physical issues. Aftercare support is particularly limited. The emergence of the Coronavirus pandemic worsened the situation as burn survivors were unable to return to utilise available services outpatient basis. Thus, an innovative nurse-led aftercare programme was developed and delivered via WeChat social medial platform. The current study sought to examine the effects of the intervention on anxiety, depression, and sleep pattern among adult burn survivors., Methods: This is a randomised controlled trial. Sixty adult burn survivors were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Participants in the intervention group received the nurse-led aftercare programme which involved pre-discharge support and active follow-up on WeChat over an 8-week period and an additional 4 weeks to examine the sustained effects of the intervention. Data were collected at three timepoints: baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and follow-up (T2). Generalised estimating equation was employed to ascertain the group, time, and interaction effects., Results: Using Bonferroni corrected p value (0.017), Anxiety and depression improved at T1 and sustained at T2 with mean scores demonstrating a reduction in both variables and total score. No statistically significant improvement was however observed regarding sleep., Conclusion: Continuous, comprehensive support is required by burn survivors following discharge to improve psychological outcomes. Objective: To examine the effects of the transitional tele-rehabilitation programme on quality of life of adult burn survivors., Design: A prospective, single centre, randomised controlled trial and reported according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines., Participants: Adult burn survivors aged ≥18 years with burn size ≥10% total body surface area irrespective of the depth was considered eligible to participate., Intervention: The intervention was in two phases: pre-discharge and active follow-up phase (which occurred via WeChat). In both phases, comprehensive assessment and intervention guided by the Omaha System and evidenced-based protocols guided the care delivery over an 8-week period., Main Measures: The outcome of interest was quality of life. Two outcome measures were used to assess the outcome of interest: Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B) and the EQ-5D-5L tools. The outcome was assessed at three time points: T0 (baseline), T1 (immediate post-intervention) and T2 (4 weeks from T1)., Results: In total, 60 adult burn survivors were randomly allocated to undergo the new programme. The transitional tele-rehabilitation programme elicited statistically significant improvement in simple abilities, affect, interpersonal relationship (T2) and overall quality life (T1 and T2) measured on the BSHS-B., Conclusion: Ongoing rehabilitative care is essential to support the recovery process of burn survivors considering that some quality-of-life subscales may improve faster than others. Background: Burns are common childhood injuries, which can lead to serious physical and psychological outcomes. Appropriate first aid is essential in managing the pain and severity of these injuries; hence, parents who need timely access to such information often seek it from the web. In particular, social media allow them to reach other parents, hence these conversations may provide insight to aid the design and evaluation of burn first aid interventions for parents., Objective: This study aims to determine the feasibility of finding, accessing, and analyzing parent burn first aid conversations on social media to inform intervention research., Methods: The initial choice of the relevant social media was made based on the results of a parent focus group and survey. We considered Facebook (Meta Platforms, Inc), Mumsnet (Mumsnet Limited), Netmums (Aufeminin Group), Twitter (subsequently rebranded as "X"; X Corp), Reddit (Reddit, Inc), and YouTube (Google LLC). To locate the relevant data on these platforms, we collated a taxonomy of search terms and designed a search strategy. A combination of natural language processing and manual inspection was used to filter out irrelevant data. The remaining data were analyzed manually to determine the length of conversations, the number of participants, the purpose of the initial post (eg, asking for or offering advice), burn types, and distribution of relevant keywords., Results: Facebook parenting groups were not accessed due to privacy, and public influencer pages yielded scant data. No relevant data were found on Reddit. Data were collected from Mumsnet, Netmums, YouTube, and Twitter. The amount of available data varied across these platforms and through time. Sunburn was identified as a topic across all 4 platforms. Conversations on the parenting forums Mumsnet and Netmums were started predominantly to seek advice (112/116, 96.6% and 25/25, 100%, respectively). Conversely, YouTube and Twitter were used mainly to provide advice (362/328, 94.8% and 126/197, 64%, respectively). Contact burns and sunburn were the most frequent burn types discussed on Mumsnet (30/94, 32% and 23/94, 25%, respectively) and Netmums (2/25, 8% and 14/26, 56%, respectively)., Conclusions: This study provides a suite of bespoke search strategies, tailored to a range of social media platforms, for the extraction and analysis of burn first aid conversation data. Our methodology provides a template for other topics not readily accessible via a specific search term or hashtag. YouTube and Twitter show potential utility in measuring advice offered before and after interventions and extending the reach of messaging. Objective: Individuals with severe burn injuries may develop depression, yet knowledge about psychological risk factors for depression following trauma is limited. This study investigated the prospective impact and interplay of prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes (posttraumatic negative appraisals and trauma-related rumination) to depressive symptoms between 6 and 24 months after burn injury., Method: Taiwanese adult survivors of burn (N = 118) participated in surveys immediately post-burn and at 6-, 12-, and 24-months follow-up. Participants were 7 5% men, with an average age of 41.8 years and an average of TBSA of 18.3%., Results: A total of 8.5%, 5.9%, and 4.2% met criteria for probable major depression at 6, 12, and 24 months post-burn, respectively. The prevalence increased to 23.7%, 11.0%, and 5.9% using the cutoff on the PHQ-9. Prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes immediately post-burn explained 13.5%, 20.5%, and 18.6% of the variance in depressive symptoms at 6, 12, and 24 months post-burn, respectively. Posttraumatic negative appraisals strongly predicted depressive symptoms post-burn across follow-ups. Moreover, posttraumatic negative appraisals significantly mediated the effect of prior depression on subsequent depressive symptoms across follow-ups. Prior depression significantly moderated the effect of trauma-related rumination on depressive symptoms at 6 months post-burn., Conclusions: Our results are the first to demonstrate the role and interplay of prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes in post-burn depression. Purpose: Respiratory muscle function is compromised in children recovering from chest wall burns, which potentially leads to more impact on exercise capacity and quality of life. This study investigates the effects of an inspiratory muscle training intervention accompanied with a pulmonary rehabilitation program on respiratory muscle strength, lung function, functional capacity, and quality of life in chest burned children., Methods: Forty children with burns, aged from 10 to 18 years old and total body surface area of 30% to 50%, were randomly allocated to the inspiratory muscle training group (IMT- G: n = 20) or control group (CG: n = 20). They received IMT plus pulmonary rehabilitation or pulmonary rehabilitation with sham IMT, respectively for eight weeks. The outcomes were the respiratory muscle strength measured by maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP); lung functions (FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC ratio); functional capacity as well as Pediatric Quality of Life to measure physical and psychosocial functioning. outcome measures were assessed at before and after intervention (after eight weeks)., Results: Based on the pre-intervention assessments, we found no significant difference between both groups (p > 0.05). Significant post-intervention differences were reported between both groups in MIP (P = .003), MEP (P = .017), FVC (P = .001), FEV 1 (P = .007), FEV 1 /FVC ratio (P = .028), functional capacity (P = .003), physical domain of QoL (P = .006) and psychological domain of QoL (P = .002) in favor of the IMT group., Conclusions: Eight weeks of inspiratory muscle training combined with pulmonary rehabilitation program improved children with chest burns' respiratory muscles strength, lung functions, functional capacity, and quality of life. Background: Major burn injuries may have long-term mental health consequences, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study extended prior work to investigate DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn as well as the contribution of two sets of early psychological risk factors to DSM-5 PTSD symptoms: Established PTSD risk factors (prior adjustment problems, past trauma, perception of life threat, peritraumatic emotions and dissociation) and theory-derived cognitive factors (negative appraisals of the trauma and its sequelae, memory disorganization, trauma-related rumination, and thought suppression)., Method: The current study recruited a sample of 118 adult burn patients (75.4% men, mean age 41.8, mean TBSA 18.3%) consecutively admitted to a large regional burn center in Northern Taiwan, who were assessed at 6, 12, and 24 months following their burn injury., Results: A total of 11.0%, 5.9%, and 7.6% met probable DSM-5 PTSD at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn, respectively. The rates rose to 15.3%, 10.2%, and 11.0% using the cutoff method. After controlling for covariates, the regression model with theory-derived cognitive factors explained an additional significant 15.9%, 17.2%, and 17.7% of the variance in DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn, respectively. In contrast, the regression model with established PTSD risk factors explained an additional significant 7.2%, 14.4%, and 10.5% of the variance in DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn, respectively. Objective: To examine the moderation effects of daily behavior on the associations between symptoms and social participation outcomes after burn injury., Design: A 6-month prospective cohort study., Setting: Community., Participants: Twenty-four adult burn survivors., Interventions: Not applicable., Main Outcome Measures: Symptoms and social participation outcomes were assessed weekly using smartphone surveys, including symptoms of pain (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System [PROMIS] Pain Intensity and Pain Interference), anxiety (PROMIS Anxiety), and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire), as well as outcomes of social interactions and social activities (Life Impact Burn Recovery Evaluation [LIBRE] Social Interactions and Social Activities). Daily behaviors were automatically recorded by a smartphone application and smartphone logs, including physical activity (steps, travel miles, and activity minutes), sleep (sleep hours), and social contact (number of phone calls and message contacts)., Results: Multilevel models controlling for demographic and burn injury variables examined the associations between symptoms and social participation outcomes and the moderation effects of daily behaviors. Lower (worse) LIBRE Social Interactions and LIBRE Social Activities scores were significantly associated with higher (worse) PROMIS Pain Intensity, PROMIS Pain Interference, PROMIS Anxiety, and Patient Health Questionnaire-8 scores (P<.05). Additionally, daily steps and activity minutes were associated with LIBRE Social Interactions and LIBRE Social Activities (P<.05), and significantly moderated the association between PROMIS Anxiety and LIBRE Social Activities (P<.001)., Conclusions: Social participation outcomes are associated with pain, anxiety, and depression symptoms after burn injury, and are buffered by daily physical activity. Background: Telemedical referrals after burn injury had been shown to be advantageous over telephone referrals for multiple reasons, however there were several key barriers towards complete implementation. The Covid-19 pandemic facilitated the adoption of telemedicine to ensure the safety of both clinicians and patients. Due to the circumstances, it was unclear whether the pre-pandemic barriers still existed despite the complete implementation of telemedicine. This study aims to evaluate clinicians' views about the barriers towards implementation of a specific telemedicine system for burns referrals, and their changing attitudes following the pandemic, to identify key domains for improvement in current and future telemedicine systems., Methods: A questionnaire was created to evaluate the attitudes of referring clinicians towards telemedicine, following literature searches and administration of a pilot questionnaire. This was administered via telephone to staff working in EDs and MIUs which referred to the South-West United Kingdom Burns Network using the Medical Data Solutions and Services (MDSAS) system, in both 2019 and 2022. A statistical analysis was performed to compare the attitudes of clinicians towards telemedicine both pre- and post-pandemic., Results: 100 respondents completed the survey in 2019 and 70 in 2022, with similar demographics of respondents. Out of the twelve barriers identified, the lack of reliable Wi-Fi and need to duplicate notes were identified as the main obstacles to implementation in both time periods. In both years, the single greatest barrier reported was poor access to reliable Wi-Fi (p = 0.944). Miscommunication between clinicians using the system, inadequate numbers of devices and financial constraints were identified less frequently as barriers in 2022 than 2019 (p = 0.005, p = 0.047 and p < 0.001 respectively). However, significantly more respondents reported time pressures when waiting for a response to their telemedicine referral in 2022 (p = 0.022)., Conclusion: Overall, clinicians displayed a positive attitude towards the MDSAS system for acute burns, with clinicians identifying fewer concerns with the system following the Covid-19 pandemic. However, concerns over the time pressures that this telemedicine system places on the referring clinician and existing Wi-Fi infrastructure persist. Background: An effective patient-reported outcome measure for scars is needed to assess scar treatments and thus improve scar management. The recently developed SCAR-Q questionnaire for all scar types, which consists of the Appearance, Symptom, and Psychosocial impact scales, has been developed with patients' input. The aim of this study was to translate the SCAR-Q into Finnish and to assess its psychometric properties in burn patients., Methods: The translation protocol followed the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research guidelines. Participants for the psychometric validation of the Finnish SCAR-Q were adults with deep second or third degree burns treated with skin grafting in the Helsinki Burn Centre between 2006 and 2017. Internal consistency was assessed by using Crohnbach's alpha and reliability by using ICC, SEM, R values, and Mann-Whitney U-test. The internal structure of each SCAR-Q subscale was investigated by using exploratory factor analysis., Results: 190 burn patients participated in the psychometric validation of the Finnish SCAR-Q. 135 (71.1 %) of the participants were male. Ceiling effect was present in all subscales. Internal consistency was excellent with all subscales, Crohnbach's alpha 0.97, 0.91, and 0.94. Reliability was good in all subscales, ICC 0.84, 0.88, and 0.91. Objective: This study attempts to examine long-term pain medication usage after burn injury and its association with functional and psychosocial outcomes., Design: This is a multicenter retrospective cohort study utilizing the Burn Model System National Longitudinal Database. Participants injured from 2015 to 2021 were divided into two groups, those taking and not taking prescription pain medication at 12 mos after injury. Regression analyses examined associations between pain medication use and outcomes at 12 mos, adjusting for demographics, burn size, length of hospital stay, and preinjury pain medication use and employment status. Outcomes included VR-12 Physical and Mental Component Summary scores Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Anxiety and Depression scores, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and employment status., Results: Of 358 participants analyzed, prescription pain medication use was associated with worse outcomes at 12 mos: Physical Component Summary (β = -7.11, P < 0.001), Mental Component Summary (β = -6.01, P < 0.001), and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Depression (β = 4.88, P < 0.001) and Anxiety (β = 6.16, P < 0.001). Exposure to patients who have experienced major traumatic events places burn therapists at risk of developing high levels of anxiety and stress, directly impacting their quality of life. Poor professional quality of life has been associated with negative physical and emotional characteristics in healthcare professionals and may subsequently influence patient safety and satisfaction, job retention, and productivity. The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the experiences of occupational and physical therapists who provide acute therapy to people who have sustained burn injuries. Semistructured interviews were completed with 10 participants (8 females and 7 physical therapists) for this qualitative descriptive study. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze the data collected from semistructured interviews. Six themes emerged after content analysis: (1) the importance of therapeutic relationships to patient successes and therapists' retention; (2) the autonomy and flexibility of burn therapists; (3) the impact of career longevity on compassion; (4) the uniqueness of burn team relationships and camaraderie; (5) the challenges of operating within the business of a healthcare system; and (6) the physical, mental, and emotional challenges to the burn therapists' resiliency. This research brings to light the physical, mental, and emotional challenges that impact burn therapists' resiliency, and which should be considered when creating programs to increase retention and professional quality of life in this professional population., (© The Author(s) 2024. Although concerns regarding intimacy abound among burn survivors, these are often not captured during rehabilitation. Considering that sexuality remains a part of humans suggests a critical need to pay attention to this aspect. To guide further work, this review sought to examine existing studies to ascertain what is known about factors associated with sexual role functioning, sexual satisfaction, and intimacy, the scree ning tools employed, and the preparedness of burn care staff in initiating discussions about these. We employed a scoping review approach with extensive searches in 4 peer-reviewed databases for studies reporting on the phenomenon, published in English from 2010 to date. A total of 17 studies comprising of 13 studies reporting on the burn survivors and 4 reporting on burn care staff were retained. Though we identified both sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with postburn sexual role functioning, sexual satisfaction, and intimacy, the existing evidence appear limited which made it rather difficult to draw definitive conclusions. The sexuality subscale of the Burn-Specific Health Scale-Brief emerged as the commonly used screening/assessment tool. The evidence suggest that burn care staff are generally unprepared to initiate discussions regarding sexual role functioning, sexual satisfaction, and intimacy and often, there is no personnel assigned to this task. There is a great need for studies to strengthen the evidence base regarding the factors associated with postburn sexual role functioning, sexual satisfaction, and intimacy. This study was conducted to determine the effect of using virtual reality (VR) during burn dressing on the level of fear, anxiety, and pain that children would experience. This randomized controlled trial was conducted in a pretest-posttest design. Randomization of the participants (n = 65) was performed with the block randomization method. Then, 33 children were included in the intervention and 32 children in the control group with simple sequential randomization. The study data were collected using the "Family and Child Personal Information Form," "Physiological Parameters Registration Form," "Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale," "Children's Fear Scale," and "Children's Anxiety Meter-State." The chi-square test, t-test, Shapiro-Wilk, mean, and percentile distributions were used for the data analysis. After dressing, the physiological parameters of the children who used VR were found to be within normal limits (HR: 108.48 ± 12.43, O2: 98.39 ± 1.14) compared to the children who did not use (HR: 117.38 ± 15.25, O2: 97.81 ± 1.35) (P < .05). After the dressing, children using VR (0.85 ± 1.23) were determined to have less fear than those who did not use them (3.03 ± 1.06), and similarly, children who used VR (2.64 ± 2.73) experienced less anxiety than those who did not use them (5.84 ± 2.26). When the pain levels were evaluated, the VR group (1.79 ± 2.04) was reported to feel less pain compared to the control group (5.50 ± 2.36). The VR used by children aged 5-10 years during burn dressing has been found to affect their physiological parameters and is effective in reducing fear, anxiety, and pain levels., (© The Author(s) 2024. Artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) have recently gained attention as promising tools in various healthcare domains, offering potential benefits in clinical decision-making, medical education, and research. The Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) program is a didactic initiative endorsed by the American Burn Association, aiming to provide knowledge on the immediate care of severely burn patients. The aim of the study was to compare the performance of three LLMs (ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and Google Bard) on the ABLS exam. The ABLS exam consists of 50 questions with 5 multiple-choice answers. The passing threshold is 80% of correct answers. The 3 LLMs were queried with the 50 questions included in the latest version of the ABLS exam, on July 18th, 2023. ChatGPT-3.5 scored 86% (43 out of 50), ChatGPT-4 scored 90% (45 out of 50), and Bard scored 70% (35 out of 50). No difference was measured between ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 (P = .538) and between ChatGPT-3.5 and Bard (P = .054), despite the borderline P-value. ChatGPT-4 performed significantly better than Bard (P = .012). Out of the 50 questions, 78% (n = 39) were direct questions, while 12% (n = 11) were presented as clinical scenarios. No difference in the rate of wrong answers was found based on the type of question for the 3 LLMs. ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 demonstrated high accuracy at the ABLS exam and outperformed Google Bard. However, the potential multiple applications of LLMs in emergency burn and trauma care necessitate appropriate surveillance and most likely should represent a tool to complement human cognition., (© The Author(s) 2024. Our systematic review aimed to investigate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among parents within 12 months of their child's burn injury. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Psychinfo, and CINAHL on January 6, 2023, for quantitative studies reporting the prevalence of PTSD and/or PTSS in parents within 12 months following their child's burn injury. The risk of bias was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool version 2018. A narrative synthesis of prevalence was presented. We identified 15 articles that met our inclusion criteria. The prevalence of PTSS within 12 months following the burn injury ranged from 6% to 49%. Prevalence estimates of PTSD within the 12 months following a burn injury were limited, ranging from 4.4% to 22%. Our findings highlight the significant impact of burn injuries on parental mental health, with a considerable proportion of parents experiencing PTSS within 12 months following their child's burn injury. Prevalence estimates for PTSD were limited and warrant further investigation. Our review also underscores the need for standardization of PTSS/PTSD terminology. Recovery from a severe burn injury requires early and aggressive therapy, which is often painful and distressing to the patient. Burn therapists who guide these interventions may be prone to experiencing secondary trauma and compassion fatigue through repeated exposure to difficult situations. At the same time, therapists may gain a sense of purpose and altruism from their work, fostering compassion satisfaction. Despite being well documented in other health professions, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction have not been sufficiently explored among burn therapists. This study aimed to quantify and characterize burn therapists' compassion fatigue and satisfaction using the Professional Quality of Life scale and to answer the question of what job-related factors may impact these outcomes. A total of 143 burn therapists participated in this study. Results revealed compassion fatigue subsale scores of burnout and secondary traumatic stress in the low or moderate range and compassion satisfaction scores in the moderate or high ranges for all participants. This study presents new knowledge for the field of burn care in its quantification of professional quality of life in burn therapists. While burn therapists experienced moderate-to-high levels of compassion satisfaction in their work, burnout and stress also approached moderate levels. Years of practice was a significant predictor of compassion. Self-immolation, a form of self-harm involving setting oneself on fire, is associated with high mortality, morbidity, and healthcare burden. This study aimed to characterize potential clinical correlates and predisposing factors for self-immolation based on burn severity using TBSA percentage scoring. Additional objectives included identifying motivational elements, associated risk factors, and clinical characteristics to optimize patient care and reduce future self-immolation incidents. A retrospective review of admissions to the Arizona Burn Center from July 2015 to August 2022 identified 103 self-immolation patients for the study. Burn severity was categorized as mild to moderate (TBSA < 20%) or severe (TBSA ≥ 20%) based on TBSA. This study population had a mortality rate of 21%. Positive urine drug screens were found in 44% of subjects, and 63% having chronic substance use, with methamphetamine (37%) and alcohol (30%), being the most prevalent. Underlying psychiatric illnesses were present in 83% of patients. Suicidal intent strongly predicted severe burns (P < .001) among the 68 severe burn cases identified. In conclusion, this study emphasizes that the presence of suicidal intent among self-immolation patients significantly correlates with burn severity. Burn injuries often lead to psychological distress, from depression and anxiety to adjustment concerns and posttraumatic stress. There is some evidence that the anatomical location of burn injuries (eg, head/neck, feet) has a specific negative effect on psychological functioning. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between burn injury location and emotional distress. First, we administered self-report questionnaires to burn survivors with ≤ 5% TBSA at a single adult outpatient burn clinic. Second, we used a cross-sectional analysis of the Burn Model System National Database. The mean values of each measure of psychological distress (ie, quality of life, self-esteem, depression, posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and, for contrast, posttraumatic growth) were examined for each anatomical location for those participants with a burn in those anatomical areas against those with burn in other areas. Using Kruskal-Wallis tests to compare psychological distress, we found no significant differences in outcome measures in either sample analyzed in our study. These findings contrast with prior literature indicating the negative psychological effect of burn injuries on certain locations in the body. Burn injuries are frequently disastrous catastrophes that can cause significant skin damage and frequently result in hypertrophic scarring. Recovery from burn injury includes 3 domains-medical, functional, and psychiatric. Psychological concerns affect both the quality of life and the disease recovery. This study assesses the prevalence of major depression or clinically significant symptoms of depression among patients hospitalized for acute burn injury, as well as their persistence once diagnosed. It is a prospective cohort that was studied in 1%-40% of patients with body surface area burn, where the Beck Depression Inventory was used as a depressive symptom measure. A total of 108 patients were included in the study, out of which 42 (38.8%) exhibited depressive symptoms. Type of burn did not affect the prevalence of depression, whereas total body surface area had an impact on prevalence rate. The Beck Depression Inventory score assessment during the study revealed that 8.4% of participants exhibited worsening of scores during the study period and only 3.4% showed improvement throughout the study. Patients with mild depressive symptoms at admission were likely to recover, whereas those with severe depressive symptoms were less likely to recover from the psychological state. Aims: To investigate the status of demoralization syndrome and the factors affecting demoralization in burn patients., Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional research design and utilized a face-to-face questionnaire to gather data from adult burn patients with burn depths classified as second-degree or higher. The Demoralization Scale Mandarin Version, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Herth Hope Index, and the Medical Coping Method Questionnaire were used to assess the level of demoralization, perceived social support, sense of hope, and coping strategies, respectively. General information, including socio-demographic data and disease characteristics, were collected. The patients' level of demoralization was categorized as the mean ± 1 standard deviation of the DS-MV scores. The data was analyzed using IBM SPSS 26.0 software to explore the relationship between the variables., Results: This study included 381 burn patients with a mean DS-MV score of 34.62 ± 18.319. Of these, 66 (17.3%) had mild demoralization, 241 (63.3%) had moderate demoralization, and 74 (19.4%) had severe demoralization. Cause of burn, total burn area, average monthly income of the individual, occupation, sense of hope, perceived social support, and medical coping strategies were the important factors associated with the severity of demoralization in burn patients., Conclusions: Patients with burn injuries exhibit a notable prevalence and severity of demoralization indicating focused attention. Background: Major burn injury, despite advancements in care and prevention, can have a profound impact on long-term morbidity, affecting quality of life and socioeconomic standing. We aim to explore factors predicting recovery of independence, the expected rate and time in majorly burned patients, and the measures of progress used., Method: A systematic search of four databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE, CINAHL) was conducted for studies reporting outcomes pertaining to physical ability indicative of independent function in adult (>15 y) cohorts who had suffered a major burn (>20% TBSA) up to 30 years after treatment in a developed specialised burn service. Data extracted included factors affecting rate of and time to achievement of function in five independence domains, as well as the outcome measures used., Results: 21 eligible studies were included comprising 1298 major burns survivors with a combined mean age of 39.6 y and a mean TBSA of 25.8%. The most significant recurring factors impacting recovery of independent function were older age, female gender, burn severity, prolonged ICU and hospital admission, preceding mental health conditions, and post-acute psychological issues. Exercise-based rehabilitation conferred benefits on major burn patients even over 2 years following injury. Discharge to independent living from hospital occurred in 27% to 97% of patients, while reported return to work rates varied from 52% to 80%. Burns Specific Health Scale-Brief, Functional Independence Measure, and Physical Composite Score (SF-36) were the most widely used outcome scoring systems., Conclusion: Major burn survivors have protracted recovery with potential for persistent chronic impairments, remaining consistently below baseline levels of function. Background: Burn injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting not only the patients but also their families. Family-based education and follow-up program are interventions that aim to improve the quality of life and psychosocial outcomes of patients with burns and their families. However, we find a lack of evidence on the effectiveness and feasibility of these programs in different settings and populations. This study aimed to evaluate the features of the family-based education and follow-up program (FBEFP), a pilot project that was developed and implemented at the Tabriz Sina Teaching Hospital in 2020 to improve its burn care system., Design: A mixed-methods approach was used to collect and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data from various sources, such as, questionnaires, medical records, interviews and observation notes, to assess the content, process, and outcome of the program. The study followed the three steps of the CDC's framework for program evaluation: describing the program, measuring its effectiveness, and providing recommendations for improvement., Results: The results of this study revealed the positive impacts of the FBEFP on the patients' physical, psychological, and social outcomes and quality of life. 4.8% of the people in the follow-up group were re-admitted, while this amount was 7.2% in the group without follow-up. Although the number of readmissions was less in the non-follow-up group, statistically no significant difference was observed between the two ratios before and after follow-up. In order to evaluate satisfaction rates, In the follow-up group, 72 patients and in the non-follow-up group, 38 patients were reached. After converting these data to normal distribution, using t-tests, it was determined that the difference between the two studied groups was highly significant. In other words, the follow-up process had favorable results on satisfaction of the studied people. However, the study also identified some challenges and barriers in implementing the program, such as lack of resources, staff training, and family involvement., Conclusion: FBEFP is a promising intervention that enhances the well-being of patients with burns and their families. However, more evidence is needed to support its effectiveness and feasibility in different contexts and populations. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the moderating role of gender in the relationship between burn severity, perceived stigmatization and depressive symptoms at multiple time points postburn., Materials and Methods: This multi-center study included data from two cohorts. Cohort 1 consisted of 215 burn survivors, participating in a longitudinal study with measures at 3 and 12 months postburn. Cohort 2 consisted of 180 burn survivors cross-sectionally assessed at 5 - 7 years postburn. Both cohorts completed self-reported measures of perceived stigmatization and depressive symptoms. The number of acute surgeries (i.e., no surgery, 1 surgery or 2 or more surgeries) was used as indicator of burn severity. Relations between number of surgeries, depressive symptoms, and perceived stigmatization, including possible indirect effects, were evaluated with gender-specific path models., Results: In both men and women, number of surgical operations was related to higher levels of depressive symptoms and perceived stigmatization at 3 months after burn. In women, number of operations was still directly related to both constructs at 12 months after burn, which was cross-sectionally confirmed in the 5-7 years after burn cohort. In men, from 3 to 12 months after burn, depressive symptoms and perceived stigmatization were bidirectionally related, and, through these effects, number of surgeries was indirectly related to both outcomes. In the cross-sectional 5-7 years after burn cohort, number of operations was related to stigma but not to depressive symptoms of men., Conclusion: Number of operations had a different effect on psychosocial adaptation of male and female burn survivors. In women, a persistent direct link from number of operations to both depressive symptoms and perceived stigmatization was found over time. In men, the effect of number of operations was most evident in the short-term, after which perceived stigmatization and depressive symptoms became interrelated. Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) in alleviating pain and improving the experience of burn patients during wound care and physical therapy., Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis., Data Sources: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Database, and the Web of Science., Review/analysis Methods: We searched four electronic databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from the earliest available date up to March 1, 2022. The primary outcome was worst pain intensity, while secondary outcomes encompassed pain unpleasantness intensity, time spent thinking about pain, and fun experience intensity. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool., Results: This study included 21 trials. The combined data revealed that the VR group experienced a significant reduction in worst pain intensity, pain unpleasantness intensity, and time spent thinking about pain compared to the control group. Moreover, VR treatment was associated with a significant increase in the fun experience intensity., Implications for Nursing: Virtual reality has the potential value of auxiliary analgesia in burn care, and exploring a more perfect scheme of VR-assisted analgesia is worthwhile., Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis indicate that VR can effectively reduce worst pain intensity, pain unpleasantness intensity, and time spent thinking about pain during wound care and physical therapy for burn patients. Approximately 120,000 children in the United States are evaluated in the emergency department annually due to burn injuries. Studies have consistently documented that pediatric burns are among the most stressful events for caregivers, resulting in a wide range of emotions, including guilt, anxiety, grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress symptoms, as well as positive psychological changes, a phenomenon known as posttraumatic growth. The present pilot study aimed to explore the prevalence of elevated perceived stress as well as posttraumatic growth among caregivers of pediatric burn patients receiving outpatient burn care and using an mHealth burn platform to administer burn treatment. Our results demonstrated that, on average, caregivers endorsed similar or lower levels of perceived stress over the past 30 days compared to the general population of 30-44-year-old adults and only a third of caregivers reported elevated levels of perceived stress in the past 30 days. However, during the treatment phase, two-thirds of caregivers reported elevated levels of stress. Further, approximately half of the caregiver sample reported moderate to high levels of posttraumatic growth following their child's burn injury. This pilot study clarifies the level of the perceived stress that caregivers of burn-injured children experience, particularly during the treatment phase when they are responsible for their children's outpatient burn care (e.g., dressing changes). Objective: Few studies have explored the mental health status of parents of children with burns and the moderating effect of social support on them., Methods: A survey was performed with parents of 112 burn-injured children at a burn center in China. Their perceived stress, anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and social support were measured by the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Perceived Social Support Scale., Results: ➀ The prevalence of anxiety (46.43%), depression (52.67%) and poor sleep quality (43.75%) of parents indicated that they experienced emotional and sleep disorders;➁ The perceived stress was positively correlated with sleep quality, anxiety and depression（P＜0.01), and negatively correlated with perceived social support (p＜0.05); ➂ Social support had a significant moderating effect on their perceived stress and anxiety, depression, but not on their sleep quality. With high social support, parental perceived stress had a significant positive association on anxiety and depression, while with low perceived social support, parental perceived stress had no significant association on anxiety and depression., Conclusion: Parents of burned children had increased stress, obvious symptoms of anxiety and depression, and poor sleep quality. Social support had a significant buffering effect on them under low pressure, and high pressure will hinder the buffering effect of social support on stress. Objective: This study aimed to explore the effect of comprehensive noise reduction management on the postoperative recovery of burn patients., Methods: Data of 156 patients admitted to Jinling Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University from October 2022 to July 2023 were retrospectively analysed. The patients were divided into two groups according to the management method: group A (n = 76, standard care of burns) and group B (n = 80, standard care of burns+comprehensive noise reduction management). The stress response level, anxiety and depression level, sleep quality and satisfaction of the two groups were compared before and after the management., Results: Before the management, no statistically significant differences in cortisol (Cor), anxiety and depression scores and sleep quality were found between the two groups (P > 0.05). After the management, significant differences in Cor, anxiety scores, sleep quality and patient satisfaction were observed between the two groups (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Comprehensive noise reduction management can reduce postoperative stress hormone levels, alleviate negative emotions, such as anxiety, and improve sleep quality and patient satisfaction., (Copyright © 2024 Noise & Health.)

Background: Understanding the national epidemiology of burns is necessary for effective planning of prevention and treatment services. However, epidemiological studies of burns have often focused on short-term and retrospective investigations of a specific group of burned patients in Iran. Therefore, we conduct a comprehensive study from August 2016 to October 2017, in the Burn Research Center of Iran University of Medical Sciences on approximately 1700 hospitalized burn patients at Motahari Hospital to identify the underlying causes of burns. In this study, an open-ended question was asked about how the burn occurred in the patients. The current study was designed and conducted for the qualitatively analyzing of the responses to this question, using the content analysis method, in order to maximize its use in policymaking and prevention., Methods: Content analysis of written responses to open-ended questions was done as a part of a large questionnaire survey. This survey was conducted by face-to-face interview at a national referral center for burn injuries., Results: Answers from 1595 patients were coded and the underlying causes of injury were categorized into three themes and 43 subthemes. These underlying causes were lack of knowledge and awareness, inappropriate equipment, and inevitable accidents. The underlying cause of lack of knowledge and awareness had the highest proportion in causing burns in both men and women. The most common subthemes in descending order included lack of skills, dangerous actions, improper location of hot liquids, individual mistakes, and improper use of flammable materials. The top five subthemes with the highest average percentage of burn in patients in descending order were deficiency of residential equipment, self-immolation, accidents, inappropriate location of flammable materials, and unsafe kitchen appliances., Conclusion: The focus of prevention programs on educating and increasing awareness of individuals, preferably women, is suggested. The main objective of this study is to analyse the association between Quality of Life (QOL), Emotional Symptomology and perceived Emotional Intelligence (EI) in burn patients. Additionally, it is intended determine the predictor models of QOL, and confirm the mediating effect of emotional symptomology between QOL and perceived EI. This is a transversal study developed in the Hospital da Prelada, Porto, Portugal, with a sample of 92 patients that were hospitalized in the Burn Unit and the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Service. The assessment protocol consisted of a sociodemographic and clinical data sheet. To assess the perception of QOL of the burn patient it was used the Burn Specific Health Scale - Revised (BSHS-R), the emotional symptomology was measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and Trait Met-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS) was used to assess Emotional Intelligence (EI). The cross-sectional and correctional data were analysed through descriptive statistics, correlations, regressions and simple mediations. The results obtained suggest significant associations between QOL, perceived EI and Emotional Symptomology in burn patients. The results of the predictor models of the QOL domains encompass the Positive Symptom Distress Index (PSDI of Emotional Symptomology), where the total variance is explained mainly by the models of QOL Affect and Body Image 46% and Treatment 31%. The mediating effect of the PSDI in the relationship between QOL in the Affect and Body Image dimension and the Mood Repairs (MR) was also tested, having proved to have a total mediation (the Mood Repairs loses its contribution in the QOL model when the PSDI variable is introduced). This study underscores the importance of perceived Emotional Intelligence and its association with the burn impact in the different dimensions of QOL of the patients. There remains a paucity of evidence on the early predictors of long-term Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) outcomes post-burn in hospitalised adults. The overall aim of this study was to identify the factors (personal, environmental, burn injury and burn treatment factors) that may predict long-term HRQoL outcomes among adult survivors of hospitalised burn injuries at 12 months post-burn. A total of 274 participants, aged 18 years or over, admitted to a single state-wide burn centre with a burn injury were recruited. Injury and burn treatment information were collected from medical records or the hospital database and surveys collected demographic and social data. HRQoL outcome data were collected at 3-, 6- and 12-months using the 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12 v1) and Burns Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B). Personal, environmental, burn injury and burn treatment factors were also recorded at baseline. Analyses were performed using linear and logistic regression. Among 274 participants, 71.5 % (N=196) remained enrolled in the study at 12 months post-burn. The majority of participants reported HRQoL outcomes comparable with population norms and statistically significant improvements in generic (SF-12 v1) and condition-specific (BSHS-B) outcomes over time. However, for participants with poor HRQoL outcomes at 12-months post-burn, Univariable predictors included longer hospital length of stay, unemployment at the time of injury, a diagnosed pre-injury mental health condition, inadequate pre-burn social support, intentional injury, recreational drug use pre-injury and female gender. The early multivariable predictors of insufficient HRQoL outcomes were female gender, a previously diagnosed mental health condition, unemployment, inadequate social support, intentional injury, and prolonged hospital length of stay. Objective: This investigation identified the association between burn injuries and the risk of mental disorders in patients with no documented pre-existing psychiatric comorbidities. We also examined the relationship of injury severity and the types of injury with the likelihood of receiving new diagnoses of mental disorders., Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study used administrative data extracted from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) between 2000 and 2013. In total, 10,045 burn survivors were matched with a reference cohort of 40,180 patients without burn injuries and were followed to determine if any mental disorder was diagnosed. Patients diagnosed with mental disorders in the five years before study initiation were excluded to ensure incident diagnoses throughout the research duration. Generalized estimating equations in Cox proportional hazard regression models were used for data analysis., Results: In general, burn injury survivors have a 1.21-fold risk of being diagnosed with new mental disorders relative to patients without burn injuries. Total body surface area (TBSA) of ≧ 30% (aHR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.36-1.63) and third- or fourth-degree burns (aHR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.37-1.63) had a significantly greater risk of being diagnosed with mental disorders in comparison to the reference cohort. Patients TBSA 10-29% (aHR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.77-0.93) and first- or second-degree burn victims (aHR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.81-0.97) had relatively lower risk of mental disorders than the reference cohort., Conclusion: Burn injuries were associated with an increased risk of mental disorders. Background: A considerable number of burn patients have greater psychological stress due to the special trauma site. In clinical practice, it is found that medical staff pay more attention to the rehabilitation of physical function, while the mental health status of patients is greatly neglected. In contact with patients, we found that attention should be paid to the levels of stigma and self-esteem. However, there are few studies on stigma and self-esteem in patients with facial burns. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the stigma and self-esteem levels of facial burns, investigate the relationship between these two variables, and explore the influencing factors of stigma in patients with facial burns, in order to provide evidence for follow-up interventions to improve this population., Methods: From August 2020 to June 2021, we recruited patients with facial burns who met the inclusion criteria in one burn specialist clinic and three burn units of a tertiary A hospital in Guangzhou, China. The survey tools of this study include sociodemographic and disease-related information questionnaires, the Chinese version of the Social Impact Scale, and the self-esteem scale (these scales were validated). SPSS 25.0 software was used for data analysis through t test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, multiple linear regression method for data statistics., Results: The total stigma score of facial burn patients was (58.01 ± 7.57), which was at a medium level; the self-esteem score was (19.72 ± 2.43), which was at a low level. Correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between the self-esteem score and the total score of stigma (r = 0.286, P < 0.01). The family per capita monthly income, education level, way of medical expenses expenditure, and self-esteem of facial burn patients were the influencing factors of their stigma, and these factors explained 33.7% of the variation in stigma (F=8.659, P＜0.01)., Conclusions: Patients with facial burns have low levels of stigma and self-esteem, which requires our efforts. In particular, there is a positive correlation between stigma and self-esteem, and self-esteem is an independent risk factor affecting stigma. Rehabilitative care for burn patients in developing countries is often wrought with several issues. Post-discharge support is equally challenging as there is often limited rehabilitative care as the burn survivors and their families transition. To inform practice, this study sought to explore the perspectives of adult burn survivors and burn care staff regarding transitioning from the burn unit and the development of a transitional rehabilitation programme. We employed interpretive description for this study. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with adult burn survivors and burn care staff across two tertiary healthcare facilities in Lanzhou, Gansu Province of China, and Ghana. The thematic analytical approach was employed to analyse the data. Forty-six participants comprising 26 adult burn survivors and 20 burn care staff participated in this study. Two themes and five subthemes emerged from the data. Transitioning from the burn unit to the home was described as complex with varied biopsychosocial needs emerging. However, available support was not comprehensive to resolve these needs. Existing pre-discharge support is limited across both settings. Burn survivors expressed interest in taking on an active role in the rehabilitation process and being able to self-manage their post-burn symptoms following discharge. Transitional rehabilitative support should include an active follow-up system, ensure patient- and family-centred support, and offer a bundle of comprehensive rehabilitative services using locally available items which do not financially burden burn survivors and their families. In conclusion, transitioning from the burn unit is filled with varied health needs. Aim: To collect data on self-harm burn patients at a national level in Finland and analyze patient characteristics., Material and Methods: First, we went through The National Care Register for Health Care (Hilmo) records from 2011 to 2015 to find all patients in Finland with both burn and self-harm ICD10 codes. Then we investigated the medical records of all patients treated at the National Burn Centre (NBC) in Helsinki in the period 2011-2020. Patients admitted to the hospital because of self-harm burn injuries were compared to those without self-harm injuries. Patients below 18 years old were excluded., Results: The Hilmo register consisted of a total of 3391 adult burn patients admitted to any healthcare unit during the study period. Compared with non-self-harm patients, self-harm patients (N = 82) had lower mean age (41 years vs 54 years, p < 0.001) and longer hospitalization (18 days vs. 6 days, p < 0.05). Two-thirds of the self-harm patients (N = 38) admitted to the NBC in the period 2011-2020 had a pre-burn history of psychiatric care (66%) and one-third of them had a previous record of self-harm or suicide attempt. Men had more severe burns than women (mean TBSA 46% vs. 14%, p < 0.05), and seven of them died during the first 48 h of care, but this was not the case for any female patient., Conclusions: Self-harm burn patients were younger and had longer hospitalization at all care levels than other burn patients. Based on medical records of hospitalized self-harm burn patients, we found clear gender differences in the severity of the burn injury and in mortality, with men suffering more severe injuries, in some cases leading to death. Background: There is a high incidence of burns in China and the sequelae of post-burn scar growth, disfigurement, and other body image disorders can cause serious psychological distress to burns patients, and negatively affecting the patient's dignity. However, there is limited knowledge relating to the dignity of burns patients., Aim: To investigate the factors that affect dignity in burns patients., Design: Cross-sectional study., Participants and Research Context: We recruited 323 burn patients from the burn unit of a tertiary care hospital. The Patient Dignity Scale, Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to assess burn patients' dignity, quality of life, anxiety, and depression, respectively. 18 sociodemographic variables were included in the questionnaire., Ethical Considerations: Before the data were collected, the study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Ethics Committee of the Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital of Jinan University (Reference: 2022-149-02) and all patients provided and signed informed consent forms., Findings: This study included 323 burns patients; of these, 26 (8%) had a mild loss of dignity, 94 (29.1%) had a moderate loss of dignity, 125 (38.7%) had a severe loss of dignity, and 78 (24.1%) had a very severe loss of dignity. Children are most vulnerable to burn injuries, and their families are their most important source of support. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the information needs of such parents and support them to help children adapt to the new situation, recover to pre-accident conditions, and reintegrate into school and society. This study aimed to investigate the perceived information needs of family caregivers of children admitted to the burn wards of hospitals. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 family caregivers of children admitted to the burn ward of a hospital in Tabriz, Iran. Participants were selected through convenience sampling, and the required data were collected by using questionnaires on socio-demographic information, information needs, information resources, and information acquisition methods. The obtained data were analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage) and inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman correlation tests). Results indicated that the greatest informational need among family caregivers was related to the child's condition. The treatment team was identified as the most important source of information for them. It was found that information should be provided in a comprehensive and understandable manner, while maintaining honesty and human dignity. The study findings contribute to our understanding of the specific information needs of family caregivers in managing the medical care of children with burns. These findings can serve as a basis for interventions and support services aimed at meeting the needs of these families and improving the quality of care for children with burns., (© The Author(s) 2024. Burn is associated with psychological distress, anxiety, and depression. Social support and mindfulness are considered a strength source for postburn survivors to resume their daily living activities. There is a lack of literature that supported the direct impact of mindfulness on social support and psychological distress among burn survivors. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of mindfulness and social support in enhancing the psychological well-being of burn survivors in Jordan. A cross-sectional descriptive design and convenience sampling technique were utilized to meet the study goal. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by a sample of 212 burn survivors. The questionnaire consists of 3 tools to measure psychological distress, social support, and mindfulness. A significant correlation was found between social support and psychological distress among the Jordanian burn survivors. Mindfulness revealed a distinctive variance in psychological distress among the study participants. In addition, some sociodemographic and clinical data have a relationship with psychological distress. Several factors among burn survivors have influenced their psychological and social support status. Also, mindfulness is important for enhancing psychological well-being and affecting the social support among burn patients., (© The Author(s) 2023. Occupational and physical therapists who routinely provide potentially painful and distressing rehabilitation to burn survivors are at risk for developing compassion fatigue. Burn therapists may also experience compassion satisfaction based on the successes their patients accomplish. The purpose of this review was to synthesize the literature related to compassion fatigue and satisfaction in therapists who work with burn survivors, explore previously reported predictors and mediators of (and responses to) these constructs, and identify gaps in the literature. Original, peer-reviewed papers published from journal inception to May 2023 were obtained from 5 electronic bibliographic databases: CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science. Studies were eligible if they (1) reported compassion fatigue or its related concepts and (2) focused on occupational or physical therapists who work with burn survivors directly or as a member of a multidisciplinary burn treatment team. The initial search revealed 284 articles, 2 of which met inclusion criteria and are summarized in this scoping review. Neither article focused solely on burn therapists but examined the experiences of multidisciplinary burn team members working in single burn centers in North America. Both studies used a cross-sectional survey-based design to assess concepts related to compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. This scoping review uncovered important gaps in the literature related to compassion fatigue or satisfaction in burn therapists. More research is needed to better understand the interplay between concepts as well as their relationship to burn therapists' outcomes., (© The Author(s) 2024.
