Conformational changes of the pyrophosphate (Pp)-functionalized uranyl peroxide nanocluster [(UO2)24(O2)24(P2O7)12]48- ({U24Pp12}), dissolved as a Li/Na salt, can be induced by the titration of alkali cations into solution. The most symmetric conformer of the molecule has idealized octahedral (Oh) molecular symmetry. One-dimensional 31P NMR experiments provide direct evidence that both K+ and Rb+ ions trigger an Oh-to-D4h conformational change within {U24Pp12}. Variable-temperature 31P NMR experiments conducted on partially titrated {U24Pp12} systems show an effect on the rates; increased activation enthalpy and entropy for the D4h-to-Oh transition is observed in the presence of Rb+ compared to K+. Two-dimensional, exchange spectroscopy 31P NMR revealed that magnetization transfer links chemically unique Pp bridges that are present in the D4h conformation and that this magnetization transfer occurs via a conformational rearrangement mechanism as the bridges interconvert between two symmetries. The interconversion is triggered by the departure and reentry of K (or Rb) cations out of and into the cavity of the cluster. This rearrangement allows Pp bridges to interconvert without the need to break bonds. Cs ions exhibit unique interactions with {U24Pp12} clusters and cause only minor changes in the solution 31P NMR signatures, suggesting that Oh symmetry is conserved. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the mixed Li/Na/Cs salt adopts D2h molecular symmetry, implying that while solvated, this cluster is in equilibrium with a more symmetric form. These results highlight the unusually flexible nature of the actinide-based {U24Pp12} and its sensitivity to countercations in solution.

The solid form of the uranyl peroxide cage (UPC) cluster LiU28 (Li28[(UO2)28(O2)42]) was irradiated by 5 MeV He2+ ions to achieve doses up to 42 MGy. An intermediate compound formed that reacts with atmospheric CO2 to form uranyl carbonates. The role of water in the UPC to uranyl carbonate transformation was studied by flowing either dry or hydrated Ar over samples during He2+ irradiation, and by storing samples in dry and humid environments before and after irradiation. Raman, infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry were used to characterize solid Li–U28 salts before and after He2+ irradiation. The highest yield of uranyl carbonates occurred when hydrated Ar gas was flowed across the sample during He2+ irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy provided evidence of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals in both unirradiated and γ-irradiated Li–U28. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel neptunyl(VI) phosphate compound, (NpO2)3(PO4)2(Terpy), was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pca21 with unit-cell parameters a = 13.9944 Å, b = 12.1989 Å, c = 13.1277 Å, V = 2241.1 Å3, and Z = 4. Related to the layered structure of the uranophane topology, it contains the first reported (NpVIO2)2(PO4)22− sheets, which are bonded via π–π interactions between the NpVIO2(Terpy)2+ ligands that are perpendicular to the sheets. The conformational dynamics of nanometer-sized actinide ions are exceptionally sensitive to the choice of counter-cations. A new means of following these dynamics in solution is presented that follows 1H NMR signals. The direct bond between hydrogen and phosphorus atoms in the bridging phosphonic groups of the [(UO2)28(O2)20(PHO3)24(H2O)12]32– (U28) cluster allows unparalleled recording of the orientations of these bridges in situ. The µ3-PHO3 bridges are organized into two supersets of conformers (facing inward vs. outward from the cluster), but each of these supersets additionally have four subsets that can be identified based upon orientations of the lone pairs of electrons in the associated oxygen atoms. The ensemble of these subsets changes over days or weeks depending upon bulk solution chemistry, temperature, and pressure. They also reflect cations trapped within the molecule. The 1H NMR spectra at room temperature indicate that the molecular orientation of this enormous ion tunes itself in response to solution composition, which suggests a strategy for selecting host–guest combinations.

Understanding the stability fields and decomposition products of various metal- and actinide-oxide nanoclusters is essential for their development into useful materials for industrial processes. Herein, we explore the spontaneous transformation of the sulfate-centered, phosphate functionalized uranyl peroxide nanocluster {U20P6} to {U24} under aqueous ambient conditions using time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering, Raman, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. We show that the unusual μ-η1:η2 bridging mode of peroxide between uranyl ions observed in {U20P6} may lead to its rapid breakdown in solution as evidenced by liberation of phosphate groups that were originally present as an integral part of its cage structure. Remarkably, the uranyl peroxide moieties present after degradation of {U20P6} undergo cation-mediated reassembly into the {U24} cluster, demonstrating the propensity of the uranyl peroxide systems to preserve well-defined macro-anions.

Herein, we report a new salt of a pyrophosphate-functionalized uranyl peroxide nanocluster {U24Pp12} (1) exhibiting Oh molecular symmetry both in the solid and solution. Study of the system yielding 1 across a wide range of pH by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, and a combination of traditional 31P and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR affords unprecedented insight into the amphoteric chemistry of this uranyl peroxide system. Key results include formation of a rare binary {U24}·{U24Pp12} (3) system observed under alkaline conditions, and evidence of acid-promoted decomposition of {U24Pp12} (1) followed by spatial rearrangement and condensation of {U4} building blocks into the {U32Pp16} (2) cluster. Furthermore, 31P DOSY NMR measurements performed on saturated solutions containing crystalline {U32Pp16} show only trace amounts (∼2% relative abundance) of the intact form of this cluster, suggesting a complex interconversion of {U24Pp12}, {U32Pp16}, and {U4Pp4-x} ions.

Macroion‐counterion interaction is essential for regulating the solution behaviors of hydrophilic macroions, as simple models for polyelectrolytes. Here, we explore the interaction between uranyl peroxide molecular cluster Li68K12(OH)20[UO2(O2)OH]60 (U60) and multivalent counterions. Different from interaction with monovalent counterions that shows a simple one‐step process, isothermal titration calorimetry, combined with light/X‐ray scattering measurements and electron microscopy, confirm a two‐step process for their interaction with multivalent counterions: an ion‐pairing between U60 and the counterion with partial breakage of hydration shells followed by strong U60‐U60 attraction, leading to the formation of large nanosheets with severe breakage and reconstruction of hydration shells. The detailed studies on macroion‐counterion interaction can be nicely correlated to the microscopic (self‐assembly) and macroscopic (gelation or phase separation) phase transitions in the dilute U60 aqueous solutions induced by multivalent counterions. Uranyl sulfate minerals are the most rapidly expanding group of uranium minerals, with dozens of species described in the past decade from the localities of White Canyon, U.S.A. and Jáchymov, Czech Republic. Synthetic analogs of a suite of uranyl sulfate minerals were crystallized, characterized, and the standard-state enthalpies of formation ( Δ H f ∘ ) were determined. Synthetic lussierite is monoclinic, space group Cc, a = 9.2896, b = 28.685, c = 9.6155 Å, β = 93.504°. Synthetic geschieberite is orthorhombic, space group Pna21, a = 13.7408, b = 7.2713, c = 11.5844 Å. The standard-state enthalpies of formation from the binary oxides for lussierite, péligotite, shumwayite, geschieberite, and bluelizardite are –3214 ± 78, –2026 ± 33, –587 ± 22, –966.1 ± 10.9, and –2084 ± 21 kJ/mol, respectively, while the standard-state enthalpies of formation of each phase from its elements are –9743 ± 78, –7220 ± 33, –5255 ± 22, –3916 ± 20, and –7117 ± 21 kJ/mol, respectively. The Δ H f ∘ of péligotite was accurately estimated using the Δ H f ∘ of lussierite, bluelizardite, and literature values of the oxide components of each phase. This implies that estimates can be made accurately of the Δ H f ∘ of uranyl sulfates of minerals without synthetic analogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent accidents resulting in worker injury and radioactive contamination occurred due to pressurization of uranium yellowcake drums produced in the western U.S.A. The drums contained an X-ray amorphous reactive form of uranium oxide that may have contributed to the pressurization. Heating hydrated uranyl peroxides produced during in situ mining can produce an amorphous compound, as shown by X-ray powder diffraction of material from impacted drums. Subsequently, studtite, [(UO2)(O2)(H2O)2](H2O)2, was heated in the laboratory. Its thermal decomposition produced a hygroscopic anhydrous uranyl peroxide that reacts with water to release O2 gas and form metaschoepite, a uranyl-oxide hydrate. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the most stable U2O7 conformer consists of two bent (UO2)(2+) uranyl ions bridged by a peroxide group bidentate and parallel to each uranyl ion, and a μ2-O atom, resulting in charge neutrality. A pair distribution function from neutron total scattering supports this structural model, as do (1)H- and (17)O-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The reactivity of U2O7 in water and with water in air is higher than that of other uranium oxides, and this can be both hazardous and potentially advantageous in the nuclear fuel cycle.

The uranyl cage clusters (UO2)22(O2)15(PHO3)20(H2O)1026- (U22) and (UO2)28(O2)20(PHO3)24(H2O)1232- (U28) can be probed in aqueous solutions by using a combination of 1H Diffusion-Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) and 1H-31P Heteronuclear-Single Quantum Coherence (HSQC) spectroscopy. This class of clusters is ideal for 1H NMR analysis in D2O because of the covalent character of the H-P bond in the phosphonic bridges. 1H DOSY indicates that the clusters are stable in solution and provides hydrodynamic radii of 9.8 ± 0.4 Å for the U22 and 12.3 ± 0.5 Å for the U28 clusters. Furthermore, 1H-31P HSQC delivers unequivocal signal assignment for both nuclei, which enables solution dynamics to be monitored by variable-temperature experiments, and reveals the presence of phosphonic-bridge conformers. The results provide some of the first dynamic information about steady conformational changes in these enormous actinide macroions.

Coffinite, USiO4, is an important U(IV) mineral, but its thermodynamic properties are not well-constrained. In this work, two different coffinite samples were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and purified from a mixture of products. The enthalpy of formation was obtained by high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Coffinite is energetically metastable with respect to a mixture of UO2 (uraninite) and SiO2 (quartz) by 25.6 ± 3.9 kJ/mol. Its standard enthalpy of formation from the elements at 25 °C is -1,970.0 ± 4.2 kJ/mol. Decomposition of the two samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction and by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry coupled with mass spectrometric analysis of evolved gases. Coffinite slowly decomposes to U3O8 and SiO2 starting around 450 °C in air and thus has poor thermal stability in the ambient environment. The energetic metastability explains why coffinite cannot be synthesized directly from uraninite and quartz but can be made by low-temperature precipitation in aqueous and hydrothermal environments. These thermochemical constraints are in accord with observations of the occurrence of coffinite in nature and are relevant to spent nuclear fuel corrosion.

A simple and efficient target preparation method is developed combining spin coating and solution combustion synthesis. Multiple smooth and uniform UO2 targets have been prepared using this method on a variety of backings (aluminium, carbon, silicon) used in nuclear physics experiments. The new mineral bobfinchite (IMA2020-082), Na[(UO2)8O3(OH)11]·10H2O, was found in the Burro mine, Slick Rock district, San Miguel County, Colorado, U.S.A., where it occurs as an oxidation product of uraninite on asphaltite matrix in intimate association with gypsum, natrozippeite, metaschoepite, and uranopilite. Bobfinchite crystals are transparent to translucent, yellow, lozenge-shaped disks up to 0.3 mm wide. Crystals are flattened on [100] and exhibit the forms {100}, {011}, {021}, {0 2 1}, and {0 1 1}. Bobfinchite has a pale-yellow streak and emits very dim yellow fluorescence under 365 nm ultraviolet illumination. The crystals are brittle with very good {100} cleavage and irregular, stepped fracture. The Mohs hardness is ca. 2 based on scratch tests. The calculated density is 5.044 g/cm3 based on the empirical formula and 5.036 g/cm3 for the ideal formula. Bobfinchite is optically biaxial (–), with α = 1.690(5), β = 1.7205(5), and γ = 1.730(5) (white light). The measured 2V, estimated from the interference figure, is 55(5)° and the calculated value is 59.1°. Dispersion is moderate, r > ν; orientation: X = a, Y = b, Z = c; pleochroism: X nearly colorless, Y yellow, Z yellow; X < Y ≈Z. Electron microprobe analysis provided the empirical formula (Na0.99Pb0.02)[(UO2)7.99O3(OH)11]·10H2O. The five strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs in Å(I)(hkl)]: 7.34(100)(200), 3.59(50)(024), 3.23(60)(224), 3.18(36)(240), and 2.01(23)(624,551,208,640,346). Bobfinchite is orthorhombic, Pbcn, a = 14.6249(9), b = 14.0389(10), c = 16.6923(10) Å, V = 3427.2(4) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure of bobfinchite (R1 = 0.0330 for 3770 I > 4σI) is built from uranyl oxide-hydroxide sheets that adopt the fourmarierite topology, with interlayer Na+ and H2O groups. Both the sheet and interlayer topology mimic those observed in natural and synthetic Na-metaschoepites studied previously, and as seen in other uranyl oxide hydrate minerals, charge balance is achieved at specific sites in the sheet through the substitution O2– ↔ (OH)–.
