In 21-cm experimental cosmology, accurate characterization of a radio telescope's antenna beam response is essential to measure the 21-cm signal. Computational electromagnetic (CEM) simulations estimate the antenna beam pattern and frequency response by subjecting the EM model to different dependencies, or beam hyper-parameters, such as soil dielectric constant or orientation with the environment. However, it is computationally expensive to search all possible parameter spaces to optimize the antenna design or accurately represent the beam to the level required for use as a systematic model in 21-cm cosmology. We therefore present $\texttt{MEDEA}$, an emulator which rapidly and accurately generates farfield radiation patterns over a large hyper-parameter space. $\texttt{MEDEA}$ takes a subset of beams simulated by CEM software, spatially decomposes them into coefficients in a complete, linear basis, and then interpolates them to form new beams at arbitrary hyper-parameters. We test $\texttt{MEDEA}$ on an analytical dipole and two numerical beams motivated by upcoming lunar lander missions, and then employ $\texttt{MEDEA}$ as a model to fit mock radio spectrometer data to extract covariances on the input beam hyper-parameters. We find that the interpolated beams have RMS relative errors of at most $10^{-2}$ using 20 input beams or less, and that fits to mock data are able to recover the input beam hyper-parameters when the model and mock derive from the same set of beams. When a systematic bias is introduced into the mock data, extracted beam hyper-parameters exhibit bias, as expected. FarView is an early-stage concept for a large, low-frequency radio observatory, manufactured in-situ on the lunar far side using metals extracted from the lunar regolith. It consists of 100,000 dipole antennas in compact subarrays distributed over a large area but with empty space between subarrays in a core-halo structure. FarView covers a total area of ~200 km2, has a dense core within the inner ~36 km2, and a ~power-law falloff of antenna density out to ~14 km from the center. With this design, it is relatively easy to identify multiple viable build sites on the lunar far side. The science case for FarView emphasizes the unique capabilities to probe the unexplored Cosmic Dark Ages - identified by the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey as the discovery area for cosmology. FarView will deliver power spectra and tomographic maps tracing the evolution of the Universe from before the birth of the first stars to the beginning of Cosmic Dawn, and potentially provide unique insights into dark matter, early dark energy, neutrino masses, and the physics of inflation. What makes FarView feasible and affordable in the timeframe of the 2030s is that it is manufactured in-situ, utilizing space industrial technologies. This in-situ manufacturing architecture utilizes Earth-built equipment that is transported to the lunar surface to extract metals from the regolith and will use those metals to manufacture most of the array components: dipole antennas, power lines, and silicon solar cell power systems. This approach also enables a long functional lifetime, by permitting servicing and repair of the observatory. Accurate detection of the cosmological 21-cm global signal requires galactic foreground models which can remove power over ~$10^6$. Although foreground and global signal models unavoidably exhibit overlap in their vector-spaces inducing bias error in the extracted signal, a second source of bias and error arises from inadequate foreground models, i.e. models which cannot fit spectra down to the noise level of the signal. We therefore test the level to which seven commonly employed foreground models -- including nonlinear and linear forward-models, polynomials, and maximally-smooth polynomials -- fit realistic simulated mock foreground spectra, as well as their dependence upon model inputs. The mock spectra are synthesized for an EDGES-like experiment and we compare all models' goodness-of-fit and preference using a Kolomogorov-Smirnov test of the noise-normalized residuals in order to compare models with differing, and sometimes indeterminable, degrees of freedom. For a single LST bin spectrum and p-value threshold of $p=0.05$, the nonlinear-forward model with 4 parameters is preferred ($p=0.99$), while the linear forward-model fits well with 6-7 parameters ($p=0.94,0.97$ respectively). The polynomials and maximally-smooth polynomials, like those employed by the EDGES and SARAS3 experiments, cannot produce good fits with 5 parameters for the experimental simulations in this work ($p<10^{-6}$). However, we find that polynomials with 6 parameters pass the KS-test ($p=0.4$), although a 9 parameter fit produces the highest p-value ($p\sim0.67$). When fitting multiple LST bins simultaneously, we find that the linear forward-model outperforms (a higher p-value) the nonlinear for 2, 5 and 10 LST bins. The Lunar Surface Electromagnetics Explorer 'LuSEE Night' is a low frequency radio astronomy experiment that will be delivered to the farside of the Moon by the NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program in late 2025 or early 2026. The payload system is being developed jointly by NASA and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and consists of a 4 channel, 50 MHz Nyquist baseband receiver system and 2 orthogonal $\sim$6m tip-to-tip electric dipole antennas. We present a Bayesian analysis of data from the FIELDS instrument on board the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft with the aim of constraining low frequency ($\lesssim$ 6 MHz) sky in preparation for several upcoming lunar-based experiments. We utilize data recorded during PSP's ``coning roll'' maneuvers, in which the axis of the spacecraft is pointed 45$^{\circ}$ off of the Sun. The spacecraft then rotates about a line between the Sun and the spacecraft with a period of 24 minutes. We reduce the data into two formats: roll-averaged, in which the spectra are averaged over the roll, and phase-binned, in which the spectra are binned according to the phase of the roll. We construct a forward model of the FIELDS observations that includes numerical simulations of the antenna beam, an analytic emissivity function of the galaxy, and estimates of the absorption due to free electrons. Fitting 5 parameters, we find that the roll-averaged data can be fit well by this model and we obtain posterior parameter constraints that are in general agreement with previous estimates. The model is not, however, able to fit the phase-binned data well, likely due to limitations such as the lack of non-smooth emission structure at both small and large scales, enforced symmetry between the northern and southern galactic hemispheres, and large uncertainties in the free electron density. This suggests that significant improvement in the low frequency sky model is needed in order to fully and accurately represent the sky at frequencies below 6 MHz., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. The first James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image released was of galaxy cluster SMACSJ0723.3- 7327, a lensing cluster at z=0.39 showing detail only JWST can provide. While the majority of the focus has been on the brilliantly lensed galaxies at redshifts far beyond it, there is more to the story than it being just a lensing cluster. The Chandra X-ray temperature map tells a tale of a merging cluster with a significant subcluster leaving a wake in the intracluster medium (ICM). This paper presents a high fidelity temperature map of SMACSJ0723.3-7327 using adaptive circular binning, overlaid with the JWST image, showing clear signs of merger activity. As the ICM extends well past the boundaries of the JWST imagery, and no low-frequency radio observations are yet published, a fuller story of this cluster remains to be told. The Far-side Array for Radio Science Investigations of the Dark ages and Exoplanets (FARSIDE) is a proposed mission concept to the lunar far side that seeks to deploy and operate an array of 128 dual-polarization, dipole antennas over a region of 100 square kilometers. The resulting interferometric radio telescope would provide unprecedented radio images of distant star systems, allowing for the investigation of faint radio signatures of coronal mass ejections and energetic particle events and could also lead to the detection of magnetospheres around exoplanets within their parent star's habitable zone. Simultaneously, FARSIDE would also measure the "Dark Ages" of the early Universe at a global 21-cm signal across a range of red shifts (z approximately 50-100). Each discrete antenna node in the array is connected to a central hub (located at the lander) via a communication and power tether. Nodes are driven by cold=operable electronics that continuously monitor an extremely wide-band of frequencies (200 kHz to 40 MHz), which surpass the capabilities of Earth-based telescopes by two orders of magnitude. Achieving this ground-breaking capability requires a robust deployment strategy on the lunar surface, which is feasible with existing, high TRL technologies (demonstrated or under active development) and is capable of delivery to the surface on next-generation commercial landers, such as Blue Origin's Blue Moon Lander. Extended, steep, and ultra-steep spectrum radio emission in a galaxy cluster is usually associated with recent mergers. Simulations show that radio phoenixes are aged radio galaxy lobes whose emission reactivates when a low Mach shock compresses it. A85 hosts a textbook example of a radio phoenix at about 320 kpc southwest of the cluster center. We present a new high resolution 325 MHz GMRT radio map illustrating this radio phoenix's complex and filamentary structure. The full extent of the radio structure is revealed for the first time from these radio images of A85. Using archival \textit{Chandra} X-ray observations, we applied an automated 2-D shock finder to the X-ray surface brightness and Adaptive Circular Binning (ACB) temperature maps which confirmed a bow shock at the location of the radio phoenix. We also compared the Mach number from the X-ray data with the radio-derived Mach number in the same region using multi-frequency radio observations and find that they are consistent within the 1$\sigma$ error level., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (11 Pages, 6 Figures, 4 Tables)

Humans and robots will need to collaborate in order to create a sustainable human lunar presence by the end of the 2020s. This includes cases in which a human will be required to teleoperate an autonomous rover that has encountered an instrument assembly failure. To aid teleoperators in the troubleshooting process, we propose a virtual reality digital twin placed in a simulated environment. Here, the operator can virtually interact with a digital version of the rover and mechanical arm that uses the same controls and kinematic model. The user can also adopt the egocentric (a first person view through using stereoscopic passthrough) and exocentric (a third person view where the operator can virtually walk around the environment and rover as if they were on site) view. Upcoming ground and space-based experiments may have sufficient accuracy to place significant constraints upon high-redshift star formation, Reionization, and dark matter (DM) using the global 21-cm signal of the intergalactic medium. In the early universe, when the relative abundance of low-mass DM halos is important, measuring the global signal would place constraints on the damping of structure formation caused by DM having a higher relic velocity (warm dark matter, or WDM) than in cold dark matter (CDM). Such damping, however, can be mimicked by altering the star formation efficiency (SFE) and difficult to detect because of the presence of Pop III stars with unknown properties. We study these various cases and their degeneracies with the WDM mass parameter $m_X$ using a Fisher matrix analysis. We study the $m_X = 7$ keV case and a star-formation model that parametrizes the SFE as a strong function of halo mass and include several variations of this model along with three different input noise levels for the likelihood; we also use a minimum halo virial temperature for collapse near the molecular cooling threshold. We find that when the likelihood includes only Pop II stars, $m_X$ is constrained to an uncertainty of $\sim 0.4$ keV for all models and noise levels at 68$\%$ CI. When the likelihood includes weak Pop III stars, $m_X \sim 0.3$ keV, and if Pop III star formation is relatively efficient, $m_X \sim 0.1$ keV uncertainty, with tight Pop III star-formation parameter constraints. We present an investigation of the horizon and its effect on global 21-cm observations and analysis. We find that the horizon cannot be ignored when modeling low frequency observations. Even if the sky and antenna beam are known exactly, forward models cannot fully describe the beam-weighted foreground component without accurate knowledge of the horizon. When fitting data to extract the 21-cm signal, a single time-averaged spectrum or independent multi-spectrum fits may be able to compensate for the bias imposed by the horizon. However, these types of fits lack constraining power on the 21-cm signal, leading to large uncertainties on the signal extraction, in some cases larger in magnitude than the 21-cm signal itself. A significant decrease in signal uncertainty can be achieved by performing multi-spectrum fits in which the spectra are modeled simultaneously with common parameters. The cost of this greatly increased constraining power, however, is that the time dependence of the horizon's effect, which is more complex than its spectral dependence, must be precisely modeled to achieve a good fit. To aid in modeling the horizon, we present an algorithm and Python package for calculating the horizon profile from a given observation site using elevation data. We also address several practical concerns such as pixelization error, uncertainty in the horizon profile, and foreground obstructions such as surrounding buildings and vegetation. We demonstrate that our training set-based analysis pipeline can account for all of these factors to model the horizon well enough to precisely extract the 21-cm signal from simulated observations., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

All 21-cm signal experiments rely on electronic receivers that affect the data via both multiplicative and additive biases through the receiver's gain and noise temperature. While experiments attempt to remove these biases, the residuals of their imperfect calibration techniques can still confuse signal extraction algorithms. In this paper, the fourth and final installment of our pipeline series, we present a technique for fitting out receiver effects as efficiently as possible. The fact that the gain and global signal, which are multiplied in the observation equation, must both be modeled implies that the model of the data is nonlinear in its parameters, making numerical sampling the only way to explore the parameter distribution rigorously. However, multi-spectra fits, which are necessary to extract the signal confidently as demonstrated in the third paper of the series, often require large numbers of foreground parameters, increasing the dimension of the posterior distribution that must be explored and therefore causing numerical sampling inefficiencies. Building upon techniques in the second paper of the series, we outline a method to explore the full parameter distribution by numerically sampling a small subset of the parameters and analytically marginalizing over the others. We test this method in simulation using a type-I Chebyshev band-pass filter gain model and a fast signal model based on a spline between local extrema. The method works efficiently, converging quickly to the posterior signal parameter distribution. We present results from \textit{Chandra} X-ray observations and 325 MHz Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the massive and X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies Abell S1063. We report the detection of large-scale \lq\lq excess brightness\rq\rq\ in the residual \textit{Chandra} X-ray surface brightness map, which extends at least 2.7 Mpc towards the north-east from the center of the cluster. We also present a high fidelity X-ray flux and temperature map using \textit{Chandra} archival data of 122 ksec, which shows the disturbed morphology in the cluster. The residual flux map shows the first observational confirmation of the merging axis proposed by earlier simulation by \citet{Gomez2012AJ....144...79G}. The average temperature within $R_{500}$ is $11.7 \pm 0.56$ keV, which makes AS1063 one of the hottest clusters in the nearby Universe. The integrated radio flux density at 325 MHz is found to be $62.0\pm6.3$ mJy. The integrated spectrum of the radio halo follows a power-law with a spectral index $\alpha=-1.43\pm 0.13$. The radio halo is found to be significantly under-luminous, which favored for both the hadronic as well as the turbulent re-acceleration mechanism for its origin., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables)

An array of low-frequency dipole antennas on the lunar farside surface will probe a unique, unexplored epoch in the early Universe called the Dark Ages. It begins at Recombination when neutral hydrogen atoms formed, first revealed by the cosmic microwave background. This epoch is free of stars and astrophysics, so it is ideal to investigate high energy particle processes including dark matter, early Dark Energy, neutrinos, and cosmic strings. A NASA-funded study investigated the design of the instrument and the deployment strategy from a lander of 128 pairs of antenna dipoles across a 10 kmx10 km area on the lunar surface. The antenna nodes are tethered to the lander for central data processing, power, and data transmission to a relay satellite. The array, named FARSIDE, would provide the capability to image the entire sky in 1400 channels spanning frequencies from 100 kHz to 40 MHz, extending down two orders of magnitude below bands accessible to ground-based radio astronomy. The lunar farside can simultaneously provide isolation from terrestrial radio frequency interference, the Earth's auroral kilometric radiation, and plasma noise from the solar wind. It is thus the only location within the inner solar system from which sky noise limited observations can be carried out at sub-MHz frequencies. Through precision calibration via an orbiting beacon and exquisite foreground characterization, the farside array would measure the Dark Ages global 21-cm signal at redshifts z~35-200. One of the last unexplored windows to the cosmos, the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn, can be opened using a simple low frequency radio telescope from the stable, quiet lunar farside to measure the Global 21-cm spectrum. This frontier remains an enormous gap in our knowledge of the Universe. Standard models of physics and cosmology are untested during this critical epoch. The messenger of information about this period is the 1420 MHz (21-cm) radiation from the hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen, Doppler-shifted to low radio astronomy frequencies by the expansion of the Universe. The Global 21-cm spectrum uniquely probes the cosmological model during the Dark Ages plus the evolving astrophysics during Cosmic Dawn, yielding constraints on the first stars, on accreting black holes, and on exotic physics such as dark matter-baryon interactions. A single low frequency radio telescope can measure the Global spectrum between ~10-110 MHz because of the ubiquity of neutral hydrogen. Precise characterizations of the telescope and its surroundings are required to detect this weak, isotropic emission of hydrogen amidst the bright foreground Galactic radiation. We describe how two antennas will permit observations over the full frequency band: a pair of orthogonal wire antennas and a 0.3-m$^3$ patch antenna. A four-channel correlation spectropolarimeter forms the core of the detector electronics. Technology challenges include advanced calibration techniques to disentangle covariances between a bright foreground and a weak 21-cm signal, using techniques similar to those for the CMB, thermal management for temperature swings of >250C, and efficient power to allow operations through a two-week lunar night. This simple telescope sets the stage for a lunar farside interferometric array to measure the Dark Ages power spectrum.

A new era of exploration of the low radio frequency Universe from the Moon will soon be underway with landed payload missions facilitated by NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. CLPS landers are scheduled to deliver two radio science experiments, ROLSES to the nearside and LuSEE to the farside, beginning in 2021. These instruments would be pathfinders for a 10-km diameter interferometric array, FARSIDE, composed of 128 pairs of dipole antennas proposed to be delivered to the lunar surface later in the decade. ROLSES and LuSEE, operating at frequencies from 100 kHz to a few tens of MHz, will investigate the plasma environment above the lunar surface and measure the fidelity of radio spectra on the surface. Both use electrically-short, spiral-tube deployable antennas and radio spectrometers based upon previous flight models. ROLSES will measure the photoelectron sheath density to better understand the charging of the lunar surface via photoionization and impacts from the solar wind, charged dust, and current anthropogenic radio frequency interference. LuSEE will measure the local magnetic field and exo-ionospheric density, interplanetary radio bursts, Jovian and terrestrial natural radio emission, and the galactic synchrotron spectrum. FARSIDE, and its precursor risk-reduction six antenna-node array PRIME, would be the first radio interferometers on the Moon. We present a methodology for ensuring the robustness of our analysis pipeline in separating the global 21-cm hydrogen cosmology signal from large systematics based on singular value decomposition (SVD) of training sets. We show how traditional goodness-of-fit metrics such as the $\chi^2$ statistic that assess the fit to the full data may not be able to detect a suboptimal extraction of the 21-cm signal when it is fit alongside one or more additional components due to significant covariance between them. However, we find that comparing the number of SVD eigenmodes for each component chosen by the pipeline for a given fit to the distribution of eigenmodes chosen for synthetic data realizations created from training set curves can detect when one or more of the training sets is insufficient to optimally extract the signal. Furthermore, this test can distinguish which training set (e.g. foreground, 21-cm signal) needs to be modified in order to better describe the data and improve the quality of the 21-cm signal extraction. We also extend this goodness-of-fit testing to cases where a prior distribution derived from the training sets is applied and find that, in this case, the $\chi^2$ statistic as well as the recently introduced $\psi^2$ statistic are able to detect inadequacies in the training sets due to the increased restrictions imposed by the prior. In order to characterize and model the beam-weighted foreground for global 21-cm signal experiments, we present a methodology for generating basis eigenvectors that combines analytical and observational models of both the galactic spectral index and sky brightness temperature with simulations of beams having various angular and spectral dependencies and pointings. Each combination creates a unique beam-weighted foreground. By generating eigenvectors to fit each foreground model using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), we examine the effects of varying the components of the beam-weighted foreground. We find that the eigenvectors for modelling an achromatic, isotropic beam -- the ideal case -- are nearly identical regardless of the unweighted foreground model used, and are practicably indistinguishable from polynomial-based models. When anisotropic, chromatic beams weight the foreground, however, a coupling is introduced between the spatial and spectral structure of the foreground which distorts the eigenvectors away from the polynomial models and induces a dependence of the basis upon the exact features of the beam (chromaticity, pattern, pointing) and foreground (spectral index, sky brightness temperature map). We find that the beam has a greater impact upon the eigenvectors than foreground models. Any model which does not account for its distortion may produce RMS uncertainties on the order of $\sim 10$ - $10^3$ Kelvin for six-parameter, single spectrum fits. If the beam is incorporated directly using SVD and training sets, however, the resultant eigenvectors yield milli-Kelvin level uncertainties. Given a sufficiently detailed description of the sky, our methodology can be applied to any particular experiment with a suitably characterized beam for the purpose of generating accurate beam-weighted foreground models., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

Low-latency telerobotics can enable more intricate surface tasks on extraterrestrial planetary bodies than has ever been attempted. For humanity to create a sustainable lunar presence, well-developed collaboration between humans and robots is necessary to perform complex tasks. This paper presents a methodology to assess the human factors, situational awareness (SA) and cognitive load (CL), associated with teleoperated assembly tasks. Currently, telerobotic assembly on an extraterrestrial body has never been attempted, and a valid methodology to assess the associated human factors has not been developed. The Telerobotics Laboratory at the University of Colorado-Boulder created the Telerobotic Simulation System (TSS) which enables remote operation of a rover and a robotic arm. The TSS was used in a laboratory experiment designed as an analog to a lunar mission. The operator's task was to assemble a radio interferometer. Each participant completed this task under two conditions, remote teleoperation (limited SA) and local operation (optimal SA). The goal of the experiment was to establish a methodology to accurately measure the operator's SA and CL while performing teleoperated assembly tasks. A successful methodology would yield results showing greater SA and lower CL while operating locally. Performance metrics showed greater SA and lower CL in the local environment, supported by a 27% increase in the mean time to completion of the assembly task when operating remotely. Subjective measurements of SA and CL did not align with the performance metrics. Results from this experiment will guide future work attempting to accurately quantify the human factors associated with telerobotic assembly. The assumptions inherent to global 21-cm signal analyses are rarely delineated. In this paper, we formulate a general list of suppositions underlying a given claimed detection of the global 21-cm signal. Then, we specify the form of these assumptions for two different analyses: 1) the one performed by the EDGES team showing an absorption trough in brightness temperature that they modeled separately from the sky foreground and 2) a new, so-called Minimum Assumption Analysis (MAA), that makes the most conservative assumptions possible for the signal. We show fits using the EDGES analysis on various beam-weighted foreground simulations from the EDGES latitude with no signal added. Depending on the beam used, these simulations produce large false troughs due to the invalidity of the foreground model to describe the combination of beam chromaticity and the shape of the Galactic plane in the sky, the residuals of which are captured by the ad hoc flattened Gaussian signal model. On the other hand, the MAA provides robust fits by including many spectra at different time bins and allowing any possible 21-cm spectrum to be modeled exactly. We present uncertainty levels and example signal reconstructions found with the MAA for different numbers of time bins. The farside of the Moon is a pristine, quiet platform to conduct low radio frequency observations of the early Universe's Dark Ages, as well as space weather and magnetospheres associated with habitable exoplanets. In this paper, the astrophysics associated with NASA-funded concept studies will be described including a lunar-orbiting spacecraft, DAPPER, that will measure the 21 cm global spectrum at redshifts 40-80, and an array of low frequency dipoles on the lunar farside surface, FARSIDE, that would detect exoplanet magnetic fields. DAPPER observations (17-38 MHz), using a single cross-dipole antenna, will measure the amplitude of the 21 cm spectrum to the level required to distinguish the standard {\Lambda}CDM cosmological model from those of additional cooling models possibly produced by exotic physics such as dark matter interactions. FARSIDE has a notional architecture consisting of 128 dipole antennas deployed across a 10 km area by a rover. FARSIDE would image the entire sky each minute in 1400 channels over 0.1-40 MHz. This would enable monitoring of the nearest stellar systems for the radio signatures of coronal mass ejections and energetic particle events, and would also detect the magnetospheres of the nearest candidate habitable exoplanets. When using valid foreground and signal models, the uncertainties on extracted signals in global 21-cm signal experiments depend principally on the overlap between signal and foreground models. In this paper, we investigate two strategies for decreasing this overlap: (i) utilizing time dependence by fitting multiple drift-scan spectra simultaneously and (ii) measuring all four Stokes parameters instead of only the total power, Stokes I. Although measuring polarization requires different instruments than are used in most existing experiments, all existing experiments can utilize drift-scan measurements merely by averaging their data differently. In order to evaluate the increase in constraining power from using these two techniques, we define a method for connecting Root-Mean-Square (RMS) uncertainties to probabilistic confidence levels. Employing simulations, we find that fitting only one total power spectrum leads to RMS uncertainties at the few K level, while fitting multiple time-binned, drift-scan spectra yields uncertainties at the $\lesssim 10$ mK level. This significant improvement only appears if the spectra are modeled with one set of basis vectors, instead of using multiple sets of basis vectors that independently model each spectrum. Assuming that they are simulated accurately, measuring all four Stokes parameters also leads to lower uncertainties. Low radio frequency experiments performed on Earth are contaminated by both ionospheric effects and radio frequency interference (RFI) from Earth-based sources. The lunar farside provides a unique environment above the ionosphere where RFI is heavily attenuated by the presence of the Moon. We present electrodynamics simulations of the propagation of radio waves around and through the Moon in order to characterize the level of attenuation on the farside. The simulations are performed for a range of frequencies up to 100 kHz, assuming a spherical lunar shape with an average, constant density. Additionally, we investigate the role of the topography and density profile of the Moon in the propagation of radio waves and find only small effects on the intensity of RFI. Due to the computational demands of performing simulations at higher frequencies, we propose a model for extrapolating the width of the quiet region above 100 kHz that also takes into account height above the lunar surface as well as the intensity threshold chosen to define the quiet region. This model, which we make publicly available through a Python package, allows the size of the radio quiet region to be easily calculated both in orbit or on the surface, making it directly applicable for lunar satellites as well as surface missions., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted to Advances in Space Research. Astrophysics spans an enormous range of questions on scales from individual planets to the entire cosmos. To address the richness of 21st century astrophysics requires a corresponding richness of telescopes spanning all bands and all messengers. Much scientific benefit comes from having the multi-wavelength capability available at the same time. Most of these bands,or measurement sensitivities, require space-based missions. Historically, NASA has addressed this need for breadth with a small number of flagship-class missions and a larger number of Explorer missions. While the Explorer program continues to flourish, there is a large gap between Explorers and strategic missions. A fortunate combination of new astrophysics technologies with new, high capacity, low dollar-per-kg to orbit launchers, and new satellite buses allow for cheaper missions with capabilities approaching strategic mission levels. NASA has recognized these developments by calling for Probe-class mission ideas for mission studies, spanning most of the electromagnetic spectrum from GeV gamma-rays to the far infrared, and the new messengers of neutrinos and ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The advent of sensitive low frequency radio observations has revealed a number of diffuse radio objects with peculiar properties that are challenging our understanding about the physics of the intracluster medium. Here, we report the discovery of a steep spectrum radio halo surrounding the central Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) in the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J2031-4037. This cluster is morphologically disturbed yet has a weak cool core, an example of cool core/non-cool core transition system, which harbours a radio halo of $\sim 0.7$ Mpc in size. The halo emission detected at 1.7 GHz is less extended compared to that in the 325 MHz observation, and the spectral index of the part of the halo visible at 325 MHz to 1.7 GHz frequencies was found to be $-1.35 \pm 0.07$. Also, $P_{1.4\ \mathrm{GHz}}$ was found to be $0.77 \times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ which falls in the region where radio mini-halos, halo upper limits and ultra-steep spectrum (USS) halos are found in the $P_{1.4\ \mathrm{GHz}} - L_\mathrm{X}$ plane. Additionally, simulations presented in the paper provide support to the scenario of the steep spectrum. Cool core galaxy clusters are considered to be dynamically relaxed clusters with regular morphology and highly X-ray luminous central region. However, cool core clusters can also be sites for merging events that exhibit cold fronts in X-ray and mini-halos in radio. We present recent radio/X-ray observations of the Phoenix Cluster or SPT-CL J2344-4243 at the redshift of $z=0.596$. Using archival {\it Chandra} X-ray observations, we detect spiraling cool gas around the cluster core as well as discover two cold fronts near the core. It is perhaps the most distant galaxy cluster to date known to host cold fronts. Also, we present JVLA\footnote{Jansky Very Large Array\\ \url{https://science.nrao.edu/facilities/vla}} 1.52 GHz observations of the minihalo, previously discovered at 610 MHz with GMRT\footnote{Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope\\ \url{http://www.gmrt.ncra.tifr.res.in}} observations in the center of the Phoenix galaxy cluster. The minihalo flux density at 1.52 GHz is $9.65 \pm 0.97$ mJy with the spectral index between 610 MHz and 1.52 GHz being $-0.98 \pm 0.16$\footnote{$S_{\nu} = \nu^{\alpha}$ where $S_{\nu}$}. We present the completion of a data analysis pipeline that self-consistently separates global 21-cm signals from large systematics using a pattern recognition technique. In the first paper of this series, we obtain optimal basis vectors from signal and foreground training sets to linearly fit both components with the minimal number of terms that best extracts the signal given its overlap with the foreground. In this second paper, we utilize the spectral constraints derived in the first paper to calculate the full posterior probability distribution of any signal parameter space of choice. The spectral fit provides the starting point for a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) engine that samples the signal without traversing the foreground parameter space. At each MCMC step, we marginalize over the weights of all linear foreground modes and suppress those with unimportant variations by applying priors gleaned from the training set. This method drastically reduces the number of MCMC parameters, augmenting the efficiency of exploration, circumvents the need for selecting a minimal number of foreground modes, and allows the complexity of the foreground model to be greatly increased to simultaneously describe many observed spectra without requiring extra MCMC parameters. Using two nonlinear signal models, one based on EDGES observations and the other on phenomenological frequencies and temperatures of theoretically expected extrema, we demonstrate the success of this methodology by recovering the input parameters from multiple randomly simulated signals at low radio frequencies (10-200 MHz), while rigorously accounting for realistically modeled beam-weighted foregrounds., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. FARSIDE would provide the capability to image the entire sky each minute in 1400 channels spanning frequencies from 150 kHz to 40 MHz, extending down two orders of magnitude below bands accessible to ground-based radio astronomy. The lunar farside can simultaneously provide isolation from terrestrial radio frequency interference, auroral kilometric radiation, and plasma noise from the solar wind. This would enable near-continuous monitoring of the nearest stellar systems in the search for the radio signatures of coronal mass ejections and energetic particle events, and would also detect the magnetospheres for the nearest candidate habitable exoplanets. Simultaneously, FARSIDE would be used to characterize similar activity in our own solar system, from the Sun to the outer planets. Neutral hydrogen pervades the infant Universe, and its redshifted 21-cm signal allows one to chart the Universe. This signal allows one to probe astrophysical processes such as the formation of the first stars, galaxies, (super)massive black holes and enrichment of the pristine gas from z~6 to z~30, as well as fundamental physics related to gravity, dark matter, dark energy and particle physics at redshifts beyond that. As one enters the Dark Ages (z>30), the Universe becomes pristine. Ground-based low-frequency radio telescopes aim to detect the spatial fluctuations of the 21-cm signal. Complementary, global 21-cm experiments aim to measure the sky-averaged 21-cm signal. Escaping RFI and the ionosphere has motivated space-based missions, such as the Dutch-Chinese NCLE instrument (currently in lunar L2), the proposed US-driven lunar or space-based instruments DAPPER and FARSIDE, the lunar-orbit interferometer DSL (China), and PRATUSH (India). To push beyond the current z~25 frontier, though, and measure both the global and spatial fluctuations (power-spectra/tomography) of the 21-cm signal, low-frequency (1-100MHz; BW~50MHz; z>13) space-based interferometers with vast scalable collecting areas (1-10-100 km2), large filling factors (~1) and large fields-of-view (4pi sr.) are needed over a mission lifetime of >5 years. In this ESA White Paper, we argue for the development of new technologies enabling interferometers to be deployed, in space (e.g. Earth-Sun L2) or in the lunar vicinity (e.g. surface, orbit or Earth-Moon L2), to target this 21-cm signal. Due to ionosphere absorption and the interference by natural and artificial radio emissions, ground observation of the sky at the decameter or longer is very difficult. This unexplored part of electromagnetic spectrum has the potential of great discoveries, notably in the study of cosmic dark ages and dawn, but also in heliophysics and space weather, planets, cosmic ray and neutrinos, pulsar and interstellar medium, extragalactic radio sources, and even SETI. At a forum organized by the International Space Science Institute-Beijing (ISSI-BJ), we discussed the prospect of opening up this window for astronomical observations by using a constellation of small or micro-satellites. We discussed the past experiments and the current ones such as the low frequency payload on Chang'e-4 mission lander, relay satellite and the Longjiang satellite, and also the future DSL mission, which is a linear array on lunar orbit which can make synthesized map of the whole sky as well as measure the global spectrum. We also discuss the synergy with other experiments, including ground global experiments such as EDGES, SARAS, SCI-HI and High-z, PRIZM/Albatros, ground imaging facillities such as LOFAR and MWA, and space experiments such as SUNRISE, DARE/DAPPER and PRATUSH. ClusterPyXT is a new software pipeline to generate spectral temperature, X-ray surface brightness, pressure, and density maps from X-ray observations of galaxy clusters. These data products help elucidate the physics of processes occurring within clusters of galaxies, including turbulence, shock fronts, nonthermal phenomena, and the overall dynamics of cluster mergers. ClusterPyXT automates the creation of these data products with minimal user interaction, and allows for rapid analyses of archival data with user defined parameters and the ability to straightforwardly incorporate additional observations. In addition to being a probe of Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization astrophysics, the 21cm line at $z>6$ is also a powerful way to constrain cosmology. Its power derives from several unique capabilities. First, the 21cm line is sensitive to energy injections into the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. It also increases the number of measurable modes compared to existing cosmological probes by orders of magnitude. Many of these modes are on smaller scales than are accessible via the CMB, and moreover have the advantage of being firmly in the linear regime (making them easy to model theoretically). Finally, the 21cm line provides access to redshifts prior to the formation of luminous objects. Together, these features of 21cm cosmology at $z>6$ provide multiple pathways toward precise cosmological constraints. The "cosmic dawn" refers to the period of the Universe's history when stars and black holes first formed and began heating and ionizing hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Though exceedingly difficult to detect directly, the first stars and black holes can be constrained indirectly through measurements of the cosmic 21-cm background, which traces the ionization state and temperature of intergalactic hydrogen gas. The epoch of reionization, when photons from early galaxies ionized the intergalactic medium about a billion years after the Big Bang, is the last major phase transition in the Universe's history. Measuring the characteristics of the transition is important for understanding early galaxies and the cosmic web and for modeling dwarf galaxies in the later Universe. But such measurements require probes of the intergalactic medium itself. Here we describe how the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen provides a powerful probe of the reionization process and therefore important constraints on both the galaxies and intergalactic absorbers at that time. The early phases of galaxy formation constitute one of the most exciting frontiers in astrophysics. It is during this era that the first luminous sources reionize the intergalactic medium - the moment when structure formation affects every baryon in the Universe. Here we argue that we will obtain a complete picture of this era by combining observations of galaxies with direct measurements of the reionization process: the former will provide a detailed understanding of bright sources, while the latter will constrain the (substantial) faint source population. Cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are among the least explored observational eras in cosmology: a time at which the first galaxies and supermassive black holes formed and reionized the cold, neutral Universe of the post-recombination era. With current instruments, only a handful of the brightest galaxies and quasars from that time are detectable as individual objects, due to their extreme distances. Fortunately, a multitude of multi-wavelength intensity mapping measurements, ranging from the redshifted 21 cm background in the radio to the unresolved X-ray background, contain a plethora of synergistic information about this elusive era. The coming decade will likely see direct detections of inhomogenous reionization with CMB and 21 cm observations, and a slew of other probes covering overlapping areas and complementary physical processes will provide crucial additional information and cross-validation. The cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization mark the time period in the universe when stars, galaxies, and blackhole seeds first formed and the intergalactic medium changed from neutral to an ionized one. Despite substantial progress with multi-wavelength observations, astrophysical process during this time period remain some of the least understood with large uncertainties on our existing models of galaxy, blackhole, and structure formation. This white paper outlines the current state of knowledge and anticipated scientific outcomes with ground and space-based astronomical facilities in the 2020s. The Dark Ages, probed by the redshifted 21-cm signal, is the ideal epoch for a new rigorous test of the standard LCDM cosmological model. Divergences from that model would indicate new physics, such as dark matter decay (heating) or baryonic cooling beyond that expected from adiabatic expansion of the Universe. In the early Universe, most of the baryonic matter was in the form of neutral hydrogen (HI), detectable via its ground state's spin-flip transition. A measurement of the redshifted 21-cm spectrum maps the history of the HI gas through the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn and up to the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The Experiment to Detect the Global EoR Signature (EDGES) recently reported an absorption trough at 78 MHz (redshift z of 17), similar in frequency to expectations for Cosmic Dawn, but about 3 times deeper than was thought possible from standard cosmology and adiabatic cooling of HI. Interactions between baryons and slightly-charged dark matter particles with electron-like mass provide a potential explanation of this difference but other cooling mechanisms are also being investigated to explain these results. The Cosmic Dawn trough is affected by cosmology and the complex astrophysical history of the first luminous objects. Another trough is expected during the Dark Ages, prior to the formation of the first stars and thus determined entirely by cosmological phenomena (including dark matter). Observations on or in orbit above the Moon's farside can investigate this pristine epoch (15-40 MHz; z=100-35), which is inaccessible from Earth. A single cross-dipole antenna or compact array can measure the amplitude of the 21-cm spectrum to the level required to distinguish (at >5$\sigma$}) the standard cosmological model from that of additional cooling derived from current EDGES results. Detecting the cosmological sky-averaged (global) 21 cm signal as a function of observed frequency will provide a powerful tool to study the ionization and thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the early Universe ($\sim$ 400 million years after the Big Bang). The greatest challenge in conventional total-power global 21 cm experiments is the removal of the foreground synchrotron emission ($\sim 10^3$-$10^4$ K) to uncover the weak cosmological signal (tens to hundreds of mK), especially since the intrinsic smoothness of the foreground spectrum is corrupted by instrumental effects. Although the EDGES team has recently reported an absorption profile at 78 MHz in the sky-averaged spectrum, it is necessary to confirm this detection with an independent approach. The projection effect from observing anisotropic foreground source emission with a wide-view antenna pointing at the North Celestial Pole (NCP) can induce a net polarization, referred as the Projection-Induced Polarization Effect (PIPE). Due to Earth's rotation, observation centered at the circumpolar region will impose a dynamic sky modulation on the net polarization's waveforms which is unique to the foreground component. In this study, we review the implementation practicality and underlying instrumental effects of this new polarimetry-based technique with detailed numerical simulation and a testbed instrument, the Cosmic Twilight Polarimeter (CTP). Most of the current Global 21-cm experiments include ground screens that help moderate effects from the Earth. In this paper, we report on a possible systematic artifact within the ground plane that may produce broad absorption features in the spectra observed by these experiments. Using analytical approximations and numerical modeling, the origin of the artifact and its impact on the sky-averaged spectrum are described. The publicly released EDGES dataset, from which a 78 MHz absorption feature was recently suggested, is used to probe for the potential presence of ground plane resonances. While the lack of a noise level for the EDGES spectrum makes traditional goodness-of-fit statistics unattainable, the rms residual can be used to assess the relative goodness of fits performed under similar circumstances. The fit to the EDGES spectrum using a model with a simple 2-term foreground and three cavity-mode resonances is compared to a fit to the same spectrum with a model used by the EDGES team consisting of a 5-term foreground and a flattened Gaussian signal. The fits with the physically motivated resonance and empirical flattened Gaussian models have rms residuals of 20.8 mK (11 parameters) and 24.5 mK (9 parameters), respectively, allowing us to conclude that ground plane resonances constitute another plausible explanation for the EDGES data., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ

The reduced chi-squared statistic is a commonly used goodness-of-fit measure, but it cannot easily detect features near the noise level, even when a large amount of data is available. In this paper, we introduce a new goodness-of-fit measure that we name the reduced psi-squared statistic. It probes the two-point correlations in the residuals of a fit, whereas chi-squared accounts for only the absolute values of each residual point, not considering the relationship between these points. The new statistic maintains sensitivity to individual outliers, but is superior to chi-squared in detecting wide, low level features in the presence of a large number of noisy data points. After presenting this new statistic, we show an instance of its use in the context of analyzing radio spectroscopic data for 21-cm cosmology experiments. We perform fits to simulated data with four components: foreground emission, the global 21-cm signal, an idealized instrument systematic, and noise. This example is particularly timely given the ongoing efforts to confirm the first observational result for this signal, where this work found its original motivation. We present results from an X-ray and radio study of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 115. We use the full set of 5 Chandra observations taken of A115 to date (360 ks total integration) to construct high-fidelity temperature and surface brightness maps. We also examine radio data from the Very Large Array at 1.5 GHz and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 0.6 GHz. We propose that the high X-ray spectral temperature between the subclusters results from the interaction of the bow shocks driven into the intracluster medium by the motion of the subclusters relative to one another. We have identified morphologically similar scenarios in Enzo numerical N-body/hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy clusters in a cosmological context. In addition, the giant radio relic feature in A115, with an arc-like structure and a relatively flat spectral index, is likely consistent with other shock-associated giant radio relics seen in other massive galaxy clusters. We document how the narrative and the policies of space exploration in the U.S. have changed over the past 50 years. We first examine the history of the U.S. space exploration program and also assess three current conditions of space exploration including: (1) the increasing role of the private sector, (2) the influence of global politics, and (3) the focus on a human mission to Mars. We identify five rhetorical themes: competition, prestige, collaboration, leadership, and a new paradigm. These themes are then used to analyze the content of forty documents from eight presidential administrations. The historical narrative and content analysis together suggest that space exploration has developed from a discourse about a bipolar world composed of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. into a complicated field that encompass many new players. We make three observations: (1) there is a disconnect between stated U.S. policy goals and the implementation of those goals, (2) the U.S. communicates mixed messages regarding its intent to be both the dominant leader in space exploration and also a committed participant in international collaborations, and (3) the U.S. cannot remain a true pioneer in space exploration if it does not embrace the realities of globalization and the changing dynamics within space exploration. We conclude with three suggestions: (1) the U.S. government and NASA should critically examine space exploration priorities and commit to implementing a program that will further realistic policy and goals, (2) the U.S. should re-examine its intention to play a dominant leadership role in space exploration and consider emphasizing a commitment toward active participation in international collaboration in space, and (3) the U.S. should fully embrace the new paradigm of space exploration by lowering barriers that hinder competitiveness., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, 1 appendix, To appear in the journal Space Policy

The sky-averaged (global) highly redshifted 21-cm spectrum from neutral hydrogen is expected to appear in the VHF range of $\sim20-200$ MHz and its spectral shape and strength are determined by the heating properties of the first stars and black holes, by the nature and duration of reionization, and by the presence or absence of exotic physics. Measurements of the global signal would therefore provide us with a wealth of astrophysical and cosmological knowledge. However, the signal has not yet been detected because it must be seen through strong foregrounds weighted by a large beam, instrumental calibration errors, and ionospheric, ground and radio-frequency-interference effects, which we collectively refer to as "systematics". Here, we present a signal extraction method for global signal experiments which uses Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of "training sets" to produce systematics basis functions specifically suited to each observation. Instead of requiring precise absolute knowledge of the systematics, our method effectively requires precise knowledge of how the systematics can vary. After calculating eigenmodes for the signal and systematics, we perform a weighted least square fit of the corresponding coefficients and select the number of modes to include by minimizing an information criterion. We compare the performance of the signal extraction when minimizing various information criteria and find that minimizing the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC) most consistently yields unbiased fits. NASA's SLS and Orion crew vehicle will launch humans to cislunar space to begin the new era of space exploration. NASA plans to use the Orion crew vehicle to transport humans between Earth and cislunar space where there will be a stationed habitat known as the Deep Space Gateway (DSG). The proximity to the lunar surface allows for direct communication between the DSG and surface assets, which enables low-latency telerobotic exploration. The operational constraints for telerobotics must be fully explored on Earth before being utilized on space exploration missions. We identified two constraints on space exploration using low-latency surface telerobotics and attempts to quantify these constraints. A constraint associated with low-latency surface telerobotics is the bandwidth available between the orbiting command station and the ground assets. The bandwidth available will vary during operation. As a result, it is critical to quantify the operational video conditions required for effective exploration. We designed an experiment to quantify the threshold frame rate required for effective exploration. The experiment simulated geological exploration via low-latency surface telerobotics using a COTS rover in a lunar analog environment. The results from this experiment indicate that humans should operate above a threshold frame rate of 5 frames per second. In a separate, but similar experiment, we introduced a 2.6 second delay in the video system. This delay recreated the latency conditions present when operating rovers on the lunar farside from an Earth-based command station. This time delay was compared to low-latency conditions for teleoperation at the DSG ($\leq$0.4 seconds). The results from this experiment show a 150% increase in exploration time when the latency is increased to 2.6 seconds. The Global Exploration Roadmap indicates the need for increased human exploration of under-sampled regions of our solar system in order to make new scientific discoveries. The high costs and dangers of sending humans deeper into our solar system necessitates the use of human-robotic partnerships, especially in transitioning from low-Earth orbit to deep-space operations. Low-latency planetary surface exploration is an example of a human-robotic partnership that provides an exciting option for effective, low-cost exploration of our solar system. However, low-latency telerobotic exploration is a new concept for space exploration and needs to be tested for its limits and effectiveness. This paper focuses on a human operator's ability to identify exploration targets in an unfamiliar environment using real-time low-latency telerobotics under various frame rate conditions. This relationship was investigated using a Telerobotic Simulation System (TSS). The frame rates were varied and the order of the exploration tasks were randomized for each operator. The rover operated at peak speeds of one meter per second with a video stream resolution of 640x480 and colorscale of 24 bits. NASA and ESA are preparing a series of human exploration missions using the four-person Orion crew vehicle, launched by NASA's Space Launch System, and a Lunar Orbiting Platform-Gateway (LOP-G) that enable long duration (>30 days) operations in cis-lunar space. This will provide an opportunity for science and exploration from the lunar surface facilitated by low latency surface telerobotics. We describe two precursor experiments, using the International Space Station (ISS) and a student-built teleoperated rover, which are laying the groundwork for remote operation of rovers on the Moon by astronauts aboard the LOP-G. Such missions will open the lunar far side, among other sites, for exploration and science. We describe examples of two high-priority, lunar science missions that can be conducted using low latency surface telerobotics including an astronaut-assisted far side sample return and the deployment/construction of a low frequency radio telescope array to observe the first stars and galaxies (Cosmic Dawn).
