We study the dynamics of a pair of molecular ensembles trapped inside a superconducting resonator through which they are strongly coupled via a microwave field mode. We find that entanglement can be generated via "vacuum fluctuations" even when the molecules and cavity field are initially prepared in their ground state. This entanglement is created in a relatively short time and without the need for further manipulation of the system. It does, therefore, provide a convenient scheme to entangle two mesoscopic systems, and may well be useful quantum information processing., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

For a condensate in a one-dimensional ring geometry, we compare the thermodynamic properties of three conceptually different classical field techniques: stochastic dynamics, microcanonical molecular dynamics, and the classical field method. Starting from non-equilibrium initial conditions, all three methods approach steady states whose distribution and correlation functions are in excellent agreement with an exact evaluation of the partition function in the high-temperature limit. We study a new type of Josephson device, the so-called "optical Josephson junction" as proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 170402 (2005). Two condensates are optically coupled through a waveguide by a pair of Bragg beams. This optical Josephson junction is analogous to the usual Josephson junction of two condensates weakly coupled via tunneling. We consider how macroscopic quantum superpositions may be created from arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates. We study a system of three condensates in Fock states, all with the same number of atoms and show that this has the form of a highly entangled superposition of different quasi-momenta. We then show how, by partially releasing these condensates and detecting an interference pattern where they overlap, it is possible to create a macroscopic superposition of different relative phases for the remaining portions of the condensates. We study the area-dependent entropy and two-site entanglement for two state Bose-Einstein condensates in a 2D optical lattice. We consider the case where the array of two component condensates behave like an ensemble of spin-half particles with the interaction to its nearest neighbors and next nearest neighbors. We show how the Hamiltonian of their Bose-Einstein condensate lattice with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions can be mapped into a harmonic lattice. We propose a method for simulating the behaviour of small clusters of particles that explicitly accounts for all mean-field and binary-correlation effects. Our approach leads to a set of variational equations that can be used to study both the dynamics and thermodynamics of these clusters. As an illustration of this method, we explore the BCS-BEC crossover in the simple model of four fermions, interacting with finite-range potentials, in a harmonic potential. We find, in the crossover regime, that the particles prefer to occupy two distinct pair states as opposed to the one assumed by BCS theory.

We discuss the use of high-order quantum accelerator modes to achieve an atom optical realization of a biased quantum random walk. We first discuss how one can create co-existent quantum accelerator modes, and hence how momentum transfer that depends on the atoms' internal state can be achieved. When combined with microwave driving of the transition between the states, a new type of atomic beam splitter results. We study the short-time dynamics of a degenerate Fermi gas positioned near a Feshbach resonance following an abrupt jump in the atomic interaction resulting from a change of external magnetic field. We investigate the dynamics of the condensate order parameter and pair wavefunction for a range of field strengths. When the abrupt jump is sufficient to span the BCS to BEC crossover, we show that the rigidity of the momentum distribution precludes any atom-molecule oscillations in the entrance channel dominated resonances observed in the 40K and 6Li. Focusing on material parameters tailored to the 40K Feshbach resonance system at 202.1 gauss, we comment on the integrity of the fast sweet projection technique as a vehicle to explore the condensed phase in the crossover region, Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a mathematical formalism for the description of unrestricted quantum walks with entangled coins and one walker. The numerical behaviour of such walks is examined when using a Bell state as the initial coin state, two different coin operators, two different shift operators, and one walker. We compare and contrast the performance of these quantum walks with that of a classical random walk consisting of one walker and two maximally correlated coins as well as quantum walks with coins sharing different degrees of entanglement. We illustrate that the behaviour of our walk with entangled coins can be very different in comparison to the usual quantum walk with a single coin. We also demonstrate that simply by changing the shift operator, we can generate widely different distributions. We also compare the behaviour of quantum walks with maximally entangled coins with that of quantum walks with non-entangled coins. Finally, we show that the use of different shift operators on 2 and 3 qubit coins leads to different position probability distributions in 1 and 2 dimensional graphs., Comment: Two new sections and several changes from referees' comments. 12 pages and 12 (colour) figures

We investigate the dynamic structure factor of atomic Bose and Fermi gases in one-dimensional optical lattices at zero temperature. The focus is on the generic behaviour of S(k,omega) as function of filling and interaction strength with the aim of identifying possible experimental signatures for the different quantum phase transitions. We employ the Hubbard or Bose-Hubbard model and solve the eigenvalue problem of the Hamiltonian exactly for moderate lattice sizes. This allows us to determine the dynamic structure factor and other observables directly in the phase transition regime, where approximation schemes are generally not applicable. We discuss the characteristic signatures of the various quantum phases appearing in the dynamic structure factor and illustrate that the centroid of the strength distribution can be used to estimate the relevant excitation gaps. Employing sum rules, these quantities can be evaluated using ground state expectation values only. Important differences between bosonic and fermionic systems are observed, e.g., regarding the origin of the excitation gap in the Mott-insulator phase., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Discrete time (coined) quantum walks are produced by the repeated application of a constant unitary transformation to a quantum system. By recasting these walks into the setting of periodic perturbations to an otherwise freely evolving system we introduce the concept of a stroboscopic quantum walk. Through numerical simulation, we establish the link between families of stroboscopic walks and quantum resonances. We formulate a general method for the study of semiclassical-like dynamics in stable regions of a mixed phase-space, in order to theoretically study the dynamics of quantum accelerator modes. In the simplest case, this involves determining solutions, which are stable when constrained to remain pure-state Gaussian wavepackets, and then propagating them using a cumulant-based formalism. Using this methodology, we study the relative longevity, under different parameter regimes, of quantum accelerator modes. Within this attractively simple formalism, we are able to obtain good qualitative agreement with exact wavefunction dynamics., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. The zero-temperature phase diagram of a binary mixture of bosonic and fermionic atoms in an one-dimensional optical lattice is studied in the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. By exact numerical solution of the associated eigenvalue problems, ground state observables and the response to an external phase twist are evaluated. The stiffnesses under phase variations provide measures for the boson superfluid fraction and the fermionic Drude weight. Several distinct quantum phases are identified as function of the strength of the repulsive boson-boson and the boson-fermion interaction. Besides the bosonic Mott-insulator phase, two other insulating phases are found, where both the bosonic superfluid fraction and the fermionic Drude weight vanish simultaneously. One of these double-insulator phases exhibits a crystalline diagonal long-range order, while the other is characterized by spatial separation of the two species., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, using REVTEX4

We present numerical results from a full second order quantum field theory of Bose-Einstein condensates applied to the 1997 JILA experiment [D. S. Jin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. 78, 764 (1997)]. Good agreement is found for the energies and decay rates for both the lowest-energy m = 2 and m = 0 modes. The anomalous behaviour of the m = 0 mode is due to experimental perturbation of the non-condensate. We investigate the properties of the one-dimensional Bose gas at zero temperature, for which exact results exist for some model systems. We treat the interactions between particles in the gas with an approximate form of the many-body T-matrix, and find a form of Gross-Pitaevskii equation valid in 1D. The results presented agree with the exact models in both the weakly and strongly interacting limits, and interpolate smoothly between them. We also investigate the use of mean-field treatments of trapped BECs to describe the 1D system in the strongly interacting limit. We find that the use of the many-body T-matrix to describe interactions leads to qualitative agreement with the exact models for some physical quantities. We investigate the zero temperature phase diagram of a gas of bosonic atoms in one- and two-color standing-wave lattices in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. We first introduce some relevant physical quantities; superfluid fraction, condensate fraction, quasimomentum distribution, and matter-wave interference pattern. We then discuss the relationships between them on the formal level and show that the superfluid fraction, which is the relevant order parameter for the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition, cannot be probed directly via the matter wave interference patterns. The formal considerations are supported by exact numerical solutions of the Bose-Hubbard model for uniform one-dimensional systems. We then map out the phase diagram of bosons in non-uniform lattices. The emphasis is on optical two-color superlattices which exhibit a sinusoidal modulation of the well depth and can be easily realized experimentally. From the study of the superfluid fraction, the energy gap, and other quantities we identify new zero-temperature phases, including a localized and a quasi Bose-glass phase, and discuss prospects for their experimental observation., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, using REVTEX4

We describe the quantum state of a Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. By evaluating the Q-function we show that the ground state of Bose-Einstein condensate under the Hartree approximation is squeezed. In this paper we examine the excitations observable in atoms confined in an optical lattice around the superfluid-insulator transition. We use increases in the number variance of atoms, subsequent to tilting the lattice as the primary diagnostic of excitations in the lattice. We show that this locally determined quantity should be a robust indicator of coherence changes in the atoms observed in recent experiments. This was found to hold for commensurate or non-commensurate fillings of the lattice, implying our results will hold for a wide range of physical cases. Our results are in good agreement with the quantitative factors of recent experiments. We do, howevers, find extra features in the excitation spectra. We consider many-body effects on particle scattering in one, two and three dimensional Bose gases. We show that at zero temperature these effects can be modelled by the simpler two-body T-matrix evaluated off the energy shell. This is important in 1D and 2D because the two-body T-matrix vanishes at zero energy and so mean-field effects on particle energies must be taken into account to obtain a self-consistent treatment of low energy collisions. Using the off-shell two-body T-matrix we obtain the energy and density dependence of the effective interaction in 1D and 2D and the appropriate Gross-Pitaevskii equations for these dimensions. We present numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a 2D condensate of hard-sphere bosons in a trap. We find that the interaction strength is much greater in 2D than for a 3D gas with the same hard-sphere radius. The Thomas-Fermi regime is therefore approached at lower condensate populations and the energy required to create vortices is lowered compared to the 3D case., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We present a study of the superfluid properties of atomic Bose gases in optical lattice potentials using the Bose-Hubbard model. To do this, we use a microscopic definition of the superfluid fraction based on the response of the system to a phase variation imposed by means of twisted boundary conditions. We compare the superfluid fraction to other physical quantities, i.e., the interference pattern after ballistic expansion, the quasi-momentum distribution, and number fluctuations. We have performed exact numerical calculations of all these quantities for small one-dimensional systems. We show that the superfluid fraction alone exhibits a clear signature of the Mott-insulator transition. Observables like the fringe visibility, which probe only ground state properties, do not provide direct information on superfluidity and the Mott-insulator transition., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, using REVTEX4

We propose a method to probe states in the Mott insulator regime produced from a condensate in an optical lattice. We consider a system in which we create time-dependent number fluctuations in a given site by turning off the atomic interactions and lowering the potential barriers on a nearly pure Mott state to allow the atoms to tunnel between sites. We calculate the expected interference pattern and number fluctuations from such a system and show that one can potentially observe a deviation from a pure Mott state. The influence of disorder on ultracold atomic Bose gases in quasiperiodic optical lattices is discussed in the framework of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. It is shown that simple periodic modulations of the well depths generate a rich phase diagram consisting of superfluid, Mott insulator, Bose-glass and Anderson localized phases. The detailed evolution of mean occupation numbers and number fluctuations as function of modulation amplitude and interaction strength is discussed. We demonstrate that the time-dependent projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation derived earlier [Davis, et al., J. Phys. B 34, 4487 (2001)] can represent the highly occupied modes of a homogeneous, partially-condensed Bose gas. We find that this equation will evolve randomised initial wave functions to equilibrium, and compare our numerical data to the predictions of a gapless, second-order theory of Bose-Einstein condensation [S. A. Morgan, J. Phys. B 33, 3847 (2000)]. We find that we can determine the temperature of the equilibrium state when this theory is valid. Outside the range of perturbation theory we describe how to measure the temperature of our simulations. We also determine the dependence of the condensate fraction and specific heat on temperature for several interaction strengths, and observe the appearance of vortex networks. We investigate the limitations arising from atomic collisions on the storage and delay times of probe pulses in EIT experiments. We find that the atomic collisions can be described by an effective decay rate that limits storage and delay times. We calculate the momentum and temperature dependence of the decay rate and find that it is necessary to excite atoms at a particular momentum depending on temperature and spacing of the energy levels involved in order to minimize the decoherence effects of atomic collisions., Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 figures. We study possible scenarios for quantum non-demolition measurements using Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that the interactions between condensate atoms makes it possible to measure the atom number with minimal back action on the system. We develop an approximate formalism suitable for performing simulations of the thermal dynamics of interacting Bose gases. The method is based on the observation that when the lowest energy modes of the Bose field operator are highly occupied, they may be treated classically to a good approximation. We derive a finite temperature Gross-Pitaevskii equation for these modes which is coupled to an effective reservoir described by quantum kinetic theory. We discuss each of the terms that arise in this Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and their relevance to experimental systems. We then describe a simpler projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation that may be useful in simulating thermal Bose condensates. We investigate the relative particle number squeezing produced in the excited states of a weakly interacting condensate at zero temperature by stimulated light scattering using a pair of lasers. We shall show that a modest number of relative number squeezed particles can be achieved when atoms with momentum $k$, produced in pairs through collisions in the condensate, are scattered out by their interaction with the lasers. This squeezing is optimal when the momentum $k$ is larger than the inverse healing length, $k>k_0$. We study the limitations to the relative number squeezing between photons and atoms coupled out from a homogeneous Bose-Einstein-Condensate. We consider the coupling between the translational atomic states by two photon Bragg processes, with one of the photon modes involved in the Bragg process in a coherent state, and the other initially unpopulated. We start with an interacting Bose- condensate at zero temperature and compute the time evolution for the system. We study the squeezing, i.e. the variance of the occupation number difference between the second photon and the atomic c.m. mode. We develop a general theory of adiabatic output coupling from trapped atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates at finite temperatures. For weak coupling, the output rate from the condensate, and the excited levels in the trap, settles in a time proportional to the inverse of the spectral width of the coupling to the output modes. We discuss the properties of the output atoms in the quasi-steady-state where the population in the trap is not appreciably depleted. We show how the composition of the output beam, containing condensate and thermal component, may be controlled by changing the frequency of the output coupler. This composition determines the first and second order coherence of the output beam. We discuss the changes in the composition of the bose gas left in the trap and show how nonresonant output coupling can stimulate either the evaporation of thermal excitations in the trap or the growth of non-thermal excitations, when pairs of correlated atoms leave the condensate., Comment: 22 pages, 6 Figs. Simulations of a rotationally stirred condensate show that a regime of simple behaviour occurs in which a single vortex cycles in and out of the condensate. We present a simple quantitative model of this behaviour, which accurately describes the full vortex dynamics, including a critical angular speed of stirring for vortex formation. We develop an extension of the well-known BCS-theory to systems with trapped fermions. The theory fully includes the quantized energy levels in the trap. The key ingredient is to model the attractive interaction between two atoms by a pseudo-potential which leads to a well defined scattering problem and consequently a BCS-theory free of divergences. We present numerical results for the BCS critical temperature and the temperature dependence of the gap. A straight forward numerical technique, based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is used to generate a self-consistent description of thermally-excited states of a dilute boson gas. The process of evaporative cooling is then modelled by following the time evolution of the system using the same equation. It is shown that the subsequent rethermalisation of the thermally-excited state produces a cooler coherent condensate. In view of ongoing experiments to trap ultracold spin-polarized $^6$Li, we study various properties of an interacting Fermi gas in a harmonic trap taking the discrete nature of the unperturbed harmonic trap levels into account exactly. As $^6$Li has a rather large and negative scattering length, we focus on the effects of the attractive atom-atom interaction on several thermodynamic properties and on the momentum and density distributions. The dependence of the chemical potential, the specific heat and the density and momentum distributions on the number of particles in the trap is obtained. We also calculate the energy of the gas. Comparison is made with results of a semiclassical calculation and with the properties of a non-interacting gas. We find that the effect of the interactions is rather large for realistic trap frequencies. Hence, it is important to include these interactions in any quantitative predictions relevant for experiments., Comment: 8 pages+15 figures

We present predictions for the frequencies of collective modes of trapped Bose-condensed $^{87}$Rb atoms at finite temperature. Our treatment includes a self-consistent treatment of the mean-field from finite-$T$ excitations and the anomolous average. This is the first gapless calculation of this type for a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas. The method of phenomenological damping developed by Pitaevskii for superfluidity near the $\lambda$ point is simulated numerically for the case of a dilute, alkali, inhomogeneous Bose-condensed gas near absolute zero. We study several features of this method in describing the damping of excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate. A simple picture describes the results of recent treatments of partially-condensed, dilute, trapped Bose gases at temperature T > 0. The condensate wavefunction is nearly identical to that of a T=0 condensate with the same number of condensate atoms, N_0. The cloud of non-condensed atoms is described by the statistical mechanics of an ideal Bose gas in the combined potentials of the magnetic trap and the cloud-condensate interaction. The meanfield interaction in a Bose condensate provides a nonlinearity which can allow stable structures to exist in the meanfield wavefunction. We discuss a number of examples where condensates, modelled by the one dimensional Gross Pitaevskii equation, can produce gray solitons and we consider in detail the case of two identical condensates colliding in a harmonic trap. Solitons are shown to form from dark interference fringes when the soliton structure, constrained in a defined manner, has lower energy than the interference fringe and an analytic expression is given for this condition., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, requires ioplppt.sty

We outline the general features of the conventional mean-field theory for the description of Bose-Einstein condensates at near zero temperatures. This approach, based on a phenomenological model, appears to give excellent agreement with experimental data. We argue, however, that such an approach is not rigorous and cannot contain the full effect of collisional dynamics due to the presence of the mean-field. We thus discuss an alternative microscopic approach and explain, within our new formalism, the physical origin of these effects. Furthermore, we discuss the potential formulation of a consistent finite-temperature mean-field theory, which we claim necessiates an analysis beyond the conventional treatment., Comment: 12 pages. A simple model for atom optical elements for Bose condensate of trapped, dilute alkali atomns is proposed and numerical simulations are presented to illustrate its characteristics. We demonstrate ways of focusing and splitting the condensate by modifying experimentally adjustable parameters. We show that there are at least two ways of implementing atom optical elements: one may modulate the interatomic scattering length in space, or alternatively, use a sinusoidal, externally applied potential., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

We have applied the Popov version of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation to calculate the finite-temperature excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{87}$Rb atoms. We derive and apply an optical Bloch equation (OBE) model for describing collisions of ground and excited laser cooled alkali atoms in the presence of near-resonant light. Typically these collisions lead to loss of atoms from traps. We compare the results obtained with a quantum mechanical complex potential treatment, semiclassical Landau-Zener models with decay, and a quantum time-dependent Monte-Carlo wave packet (MCWP) calculation. We formulate the OBE method in both adiabatic and diabatic representations. We calculate the laser intensity dependence of collision probabilities and find that the adiabatic OBE results agree quantitatively with those of the MCWP calculation, and qualitatively with the semiclassical Landau-Zener model with delayed decay, but that the complex potential method or the traditional Landau-Zener model fail in the saturation limit., Comment: 21 pages, RevTex, 7 eps figures embedded using psfig, see also http://www.physics.helsinki.fi/~kasuomin/

In this paper we use microscopic arguments to derive a nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation for trapped Bose-condensed gases. This is made possible by considering the equations of motion of various anomalous averages. The resulting equation explicitly includes the effect of repeated binary interactions (in particular ladders) between the atoms. Moreover, under the conditions that dressing of the intermediate states of a collision can be ignored, this equation is shown to reduce to the conventional Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the pseudopotential limit. Extending the treatment, we show first how the occupation of excited (bare particle) states affects the collisions, and thus obtain the many-body T-matrix approximation in a trap. In addition, we discuss how the bare particle many-body T-matrix gets dressed by mean fields due to condensed and excited atoms. We conclude that the most commonly used version of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can only be put on a microscopic basis for a restrictive range of conditions. For partial condensation, we need to take account of interactions between condensed and excited atoms, which, in a consistent formulation, should also be expressed in terms of the many-body T-matrix. This can be achieved by considering fluctuations around the condensate mean field beyond those included in the conventional finite temperature mean field, i.e. Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB), theory., Comment: Resolved some problems with printing of figures
