1. Occupational (In)Visibility: The Emerging Role of the Remote Education Tutor as an Educational Conduit

Abstract

Remote Education Tutors (RETs) are central to the delivery of distance schooling in Australia and are accountable for the face-to face supervision and educational support of students. They act as the government mandated adult supervisors of Australian primary and secondary school students enrolled in distance education, including geographically isolated learners. This paper draws on statistical data from a national survey (N = 575) that was designed to map the perceptions of Australian RETs. These data confirmed that RETs act as a conduit between the distance schooling teacher and student, and that their role requires complex capabilities to be performed within a structured framework. Time restrictions with competing demands present a constant challenge to the RETs' work satisfaction. Constraining this occupation is the reality that there is no formal qualification available for RETs. Without specific credentialling, it appears that the RETs' (in)visible role risks being overlooked as a substantive educational occupation.

25. Limit design of reinforced concrete beam-column connections

Abstract

In applying inelastic or Limit Design procedures to structural frameworks/ the most important critical section is generally the beam support section. The primary objective of this thesis was to study the behaviour of the various experimental models used to simulate the reinforced concrete beam-column connection. With the system itself the main variable/ a series of 33 tests, 12 of which were 2-span continuous systems, was carried out. Additional variables in this essentially qualitative study were: the amount of tension reinforcement, tie spacing, type of loading, the presence of a column, and column load. All tests were deformation controlled in a "stiff" servo-mechanical structural test facility. Post-yield strength and deformation for all systems were evaluated for the more significant semi-empirical approaches. Comparisons were also made with analytical procedures which incorporate recently developed comprehensive stress-strain relationships for reinforced concrete in flexural compression. A generalised expression for post-yield behaviour has been suggested which acknowledges the significance of the cored compression area, the discontinuous nature of deformation and the existence of non-flexural effects. Pre-yield deformation was used as a basis for classifying the experimental models into flexural, non-flexural and quasi-flexural systems

32. Column abundance measurements of atmospheric hydroxyl at 45 deg S

Abstract

The first Southern Hemisphere measurements of the vertical column abundance of atmospheric hydroxyl (OH) have been obtained at Lauder, New Zealand (45 deg S) with a PEPSIOS instrument measuring the absorption of sunlight at 308 nm. The variation of column OH with solar zenith angle is similar to that measured at other sites. However average annual abundances of OH are about 20% higher than those found by similar measurements at 40 deg N. Minimum OH abundances about 10% less than average levels at 40 deg N, are observed during austral spring. The OH abundance abruptly increases by 30% in early summer and remains at the elevated level until late the following winter.
