Abstract

Ziel: Das Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Wirksamkeit des Mistelextraktes Iscador® P beim Equinen Sarkoid im Vergleich zur Placebo‐Kontrolle zu evaluieren. Methoden: Zwischen Mai 2004 und Dezember 2005 wurden insgesamt 53 Pferde mit 444 Sarkoiden aufgenommen und per Zufall (2:1) einer Behandlungsgruppe (viscum album Extrakt; VAE n=32) oder einer Kontrollgruppe (Placebo n=21) zugeordnet. Die VAE‐Gruppe wurde mit subkutanen Injektionen von 0.1mg bis 20mg/ml Iscador® P (viscum album ssp. Austriacus; Weleda, CH‐Arlesheim) dreimal pro Woche über 105 Tage behandelt. Die Placebo‐Gruppe erhielt physiologische NaCl‐Lösung. Ein Jahr nach Therapiebeginn wurde der Status der Tiere entweder als "geheilt", "gebessert, "stabil" oder "verschlechtert" beurteilt. Im März 2011, somit min. 5 Jahre nach Therapiebeginn wurden die Pferdebesitzer telefonisch interviewt, um langfristige Behandlungsergebnisse bewerten zu können. Ergebnisse: Die Ein‐Jahres‐Heilungsrate war 28% (9/32) in der VAE‐Gruppe und 14% (3/21) in der Placebo‐Gruppe (n.s.). Darüber hinaus zeigten 4 Pferde der VAE‐Gruppe und 0 Pferde in der Placebo‐Gruppe Verbesserungen. Abstract

Wikis are widely used by communities to create and update documents on the Web. This presentation describes the potential of Wikis for producing DAISY (more precisely DTBook) contents. We discuss how to convert existing Wiki contents into DTBook. We also examine how DAISY content producers could use Wikis as an easy and free tool to collaboratively edit their documents. The case of MediaWiki is studied (this Wiki software is used by Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikibooks, …). We describe how to expand its functionalities as to make possible the importation and exportation of DTbook contents.

Abstract

DAISY has published a Specification for DAISY Protected Digital Talking Book. This paper discusses why such a specification is useful, not only for rightsholders but also for readers with print disabilities. An implementation of PDTB2 is proposed, called dtbprotect. It makes possible to simply produce an encrypted book from a book in DAISY format. It is currently experimented on the Helene Digital Library for the blind. It will be made available open source as to facilitate its implementation by other digital libraries.

Abstract

Both integrated library management systems and DAISY production and manipulation tools become widespread. We study how they could be combined to build a ready-to-use digital library with DAISY as its core format. The obtained framework should cover the entire book processing, from digital files provided either by publishers or by scanning printed material, until the delivery of DAISY content to end-users in a possibly secured way. We first give a functional description of the framework we have in mind. Then, we examine the existing tools of interest and give some tracks for further software developments.

Abstract

Looking for the best way to publish accessible graphics, this presentation gives some information about how to deal with non-textual contents when adapting documents for DAISY books. It is based on a study conducted by Braillenet for enriching the Helene’s digital library with technical contents. By analysing publishing guidelines, transcribers’ work in specialized centres and main relief printing formats, this work presents thoughts on how to analyse a graphical content, how to produce vectorial images, the main steps for preparing digital image files that could be downloaded and printed, how to index these files into the DAISY book, and finally make them accessible.

Ergebnisse: Die Ein‐Jahres‐Heilungsrate war 28% (9/32) in der VAE‐Gruppe und 14% (3/21) in der Placebo‐Gruppe (n.s.). Darüber hinaus zeigten 4 Pferde der VAE‐Gruppe und 0 Pferde in der Placebo‐Gruppe Verbesserungen. Ein positives Outcome war also bei 41% der Pferde in der VAE‐Gruppe und bei 14% in der Placebogruppe festzustellen (p <0,05). Im Jahr 2011 konnten Daten von 30 VAE‐Pferden und 20 Placebopferden gewonnen werden, von denen konnten 27 (VAE) bzw. 15 (Placebo) ausgewertet werden. Alle primär geheilten oder gebesserten, noch lebenden Pferde (11) der VAE‐Gruppe blieben ohne weitere Behandlung geheilt. Vorher als "stabil" beurteilte Pferde wurden in 6/8 Fällen ohne weitere Behandlung geheilt. Ausschliesslich mit VAE wurden bis 2011 63% Pferde geheilt (17/27), hingegen 4 von 15 nur mit Placebo (27%; p<0.05). Fazit: Die Behandlung mit Iscador® P stellt eine wirksame Therapie bei Pferden mit Equinem Sarkoid dar. Eine vollständige Heilung entwickelt sich in vielen Fällen über eine lange Zeit, ist dann aber in aller Regel nachhaltig.

Abstract

Both integrated library management systems and DAISY production and manipulation tools become widespread. We study how they could be combined to build a ready-to-use digital library with DAISY as its core format. The obtained framework should cover the entire book processing, from digital files provided either by publishers or by scanning printed material, until the delivery of DAISY content to end-users in a possibly secured way. We first give a functional description of the framework we have in mind. Then, we examine the existing tools of interest and give some tracks for further software developments.

Abstract

Wikis are widely used by communities to create and update documents on the Web. This presentation describes the potential of Wikis for producing DAISY (more precisely DTBook) contents. We discuss how to convert existing Wiki contents into DTBook. We also examine how DAISY content producers could use Wikis as an easy and free tool to collaboratively edit their documents. The case of MediaWiki is studied (this Wiki software is used by Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikibooks, …). We describe how to expand its functionalities as to make possible the importation and exportation of DTbook contents.

Abstract

Looking for the best way to publish accessible graphics, this presentation gives some information about how to deal with non-textual contents when adapting documents for DAISY books. It is based on a study conducted by Braillenet for enriching the Helene’s digital library with technical contents. By analysing publishing guidelines, transcribers’ work in specialized centres and main relief printing formats, this work presents thoughts on how to analyse a graphical content, how to produce vectorial images, the main steps for preparing digital image files that could be downloaded and printed, how to index these files into the DAISY book, and finally make them accessible.

Abstract

DAISY has published a Specification for DAISY Protected Digital Talking Book. This paper discusses why such a specification is useful, not only for rightsholders but also for readers with print disabilities. An implementation of PDTB2 is proposed, called dtbprotect. It makes possible to simply produce an encrypted book from a book in DAISY format. It is currently experimented on the Helene Digital Library for the blind. It will be made available open source as to facilitate its implementation by other digital libraries.

Abstract

This paper introduces a tactile and auditory interactive material, Tactison, that was developed to teach blind or visually impaired children. The principles and design of the system are described. Some applications in education are presented and prospects for future developments are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how technology can bring about metaphorical environments which may be as useful for the blind as images are for sighted people.

48. Towards Web Accessibility Certification: The Findings of the Support-EAM Project.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a European Specific Support Action whose objective was to explore the possibility to certify the accessibility of Internet services and the possible implications for a eAccessibility Quality Mark. The project initiated and conducted a CEN workshop which produced a CEN Workshop Agreemeent (CWA) identifying three possible schemes for Web accessibility certification, namely inspection according to the ISO/IEC 17020, certification according to the EN 45011 and Supplier's Declaration of Conformity according to the ISO/IEC 17050. The CEN workshop also recommended the creation of an Institute whose objective would be to harmonise the interpretation and implementation of the W3C/WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in Europe.
