We demonstrate coherent Doppler-free three-photon excitation of the $^{1}S_{0}$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}P_{0}$ optical clock transition and the $^{1}S_{0}$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}P_{1}$ intercombination transition in free-space thermal clouds of $^{88}$Sr atoms. By appropriate orientation of the wavevectors of three lasers incident on the atoms, the first-order Doppler shift can be eliminated for all velocity classes. Three-photon excitation of the $^{1}S_{0}$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}P_{1}$ transition enables high-contrast Ramsey spectroscopy with interrogation times comparable to the 21$\mu$s natural lifetime using a single near-resonant laser source. Three-photon spectroscopy on the $^{1}S_{0}$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}P_{0}$ clock transition, using only laser frequencies nearly resonant with the $^{1}S_{0}$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}P_{0}$ and $^{1}S_{0}$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}P_{1}$ transitions, enables a reduction in Doppler broadening by two orders of magnitude and a corresponding $\sim470$Hz linewidth without a confining potential.

We experimentally implement circuits of one and two mode operations on two motional modes of a single trapped ion. This is achieved by implementing the required displacement, squeezing, two-mode squeezing, and beamsplitter operations using oscillating electric potentials applied to the trap electrodes. The resulting electric fields drive the modes resonantly or parametrically without the need for optical forces. As a demonstration, we implement SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers with phase sensitivities near the Cram\'er-Rao bound. We report a maximum sensitivity of a SU(2) interferometer within $0.67(5)\,$dB of the standard quantum limit (SQL) as well as a single and two-mode SU(1,1) sensitivity of $5.9(2)\,$dB and $4.5(2)\,$dB below the SQL respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We show experimentally that a broad class of interactions involving quantum harmonic oscillators can be made stronger (amplified) using a unitary squeezing protocol. While our demonstration uses the motional and spin states of a single trapped $^{25}$Mg$^{+}$ ion, the scheme applies generally to Hamiltonians involving just a single harmonic oscillator as well as Hamiltonians coupling the oscillator to another quantum degree of freedom such as a qubit, covering a large range of systems of interest in quantum information and metrology applications. Importantly, the protocol does not require knowledge of the parameters of the Hamiltonian to be amplified, nor does it require a well-defined phase relationship between the squeezing interaction and the rest of the system dynamics, making it potentially useful in instances where certain aspects of a signal or interaction may be unknown or uncontrolled.

Improving coherence is a fundamental challenge in quantum simulation and sensing experiments with trapped ions. Here we discuss, experimentally demonstrate, and estimate the potential impacts of two different protocols that enhance, through motional parametric excitation, the coherent spin-motion coupling of ions obtained with a spin-dependent force. The experiments are performed on 2D crystal arrays of approximately one hundred $^9$Be$^+$ ions confined in a Penning trap. By modulating the trapping potential at close to twice the center-of-mass mode frequency, we squeeze the motional mode and enhance the spin-motion coupling while maintaining spin coherence. With a stroboscopic protocol, we measure $5.4 \pm 0.9$ dB of motional squeezing below the ground-state motion, from which theory predicts a $10$ dB enhancement in the sensitivity for measuring small displacements using a recently demonstrated protocol [Science $\textbf{373}$, 673 (2021)]. With a continuous squeezing protocol, we measure and accurately calibrate the parametric coupling strength. Theory suggests this protocol can be used to improve quantum spin squeezing, limited in our system by off-resonant light scatter. We illustrate numerically the trade-offs between strong parametric amplification and motional dephasing in the form of center-of-mass frequency fluctuations for improving quantum spin squeezing in our set-up., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

AI-based recommender systems have been successfully applied in many domains (e.g., e-commerce, feeds ranking). Medical experts believe that incorporating such methods into a clinical decision support system may help reduce medical team errors and improve patient outcomes during treatment processes (e.g., trauma resuscitation, surgical processes). Limited research, however, has been done to develop automatic data-driven treatment decision support. We explored the feasibility of building a treatment recommender system to provide runtime next-minute activity predictions. The system uses patient context (e.g., demographics and vital signs) and process context (e.g., activities) to continuously predict activities that will be performed in the next minute. We evaluated our system on a pre-recorded dataset of trauma resuscitation and conducted an ablation study on different model variants. The best model achieved an average F1-score of 0.67 for 61 activity types. Studies of the most distant AGNs allow us to test our current understanding of the physics present in radio-jetted AGNs across a range of environments. The decrease in apparent luminosity with distance is the primary difficulty to overcome in the study of these distant AGNs, which requires highly sensitive instruments. Our goal is to employ new long wavelength radio data to better parametrise the broad-band SED of GB 1508+5714, a high-redshift (z=4.30) AGN. Its high redshift, high intrinsic luminosity, and classification as a blazar allow us to test emission models that consider the efficient cooling of jet electrons via inverse Compton losses in interactions with the dense CMB photon field at high redshifts. A significant detection of this effect in GB 1508+5714 may partly explain the apparent sparsity of high-redshift radio galaxies in wide-field surveys; detections of this kind are only becoming possible with the current generation of SKA precursors. We used international LOFAR telescope to image the long wavelength radio emission around the high-redshift blazar GB 1508+5714 on arcsecond scales at frequencies between 128 MHz and 160 MHz. This allowed us to compare the spatially resolved structure with higher frequency observations, and to construct spectral index maps. The LOFAR image shows a compact unresolved core and two resolved emission regions around 2 arcsec to the east and to the west of the radio core. We find structure consistent with previous VLA observations, as well as a previously unreported emission region to the east. We interpret the arcsecond-scale radio structure of GB 1508+5714 as a FR II-like radio galaxy at a small viewing angle. Our SED modelling shows that a scenario featuring significant quenching effects caused by interaction with the CMB provides a good description of the data, and notably explains the suppressed radio emission., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Process data with confidential information cannot be shared directly in public, which hinders the research in process data mining and analytics. Data encryption methods have been studied to protect the data, but they still may be decrypted, which leads to individual identification. We experimented with different models of representation learning and used the learned model to generate synthetic process data. We introduced an adversarial generative network for process data generation (ProcessGAN) with two Transformer networks for the generator and the discriminator. We evaluated ProcessGAN and traditional models on six real-world datasets, of which two are public and four are collected in medical domains. We used statistical metrics and supervised learning scores to evaluate the synthetic data. We also used process mining to discover workflows for the authentic and synthetic datasets and had medical experts evaluate the clinical applicability of the synthetic workflows. We found that ProcessGAN outperformed traditional sequential models when trained on small authentic datasets of complex processes. ProcessGAN better represented the long-range dependencies between the activities, which is important for complicated processes such as the medical processes. Traditional sequential models performed better when trained on large data of simple processes. We conclude that ProcessGAN can generate a large amount of sharable synthetic process data indistinguishable from authentic data., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Purpose: To evaluate an iterative learning approach for enhanced performance of Robust Artificial-neural-networks for K-space Interpolation (RAKI), when only a limited amount of training data (auto-calibration signals, ACS) are available for accelerated standard 2D imaging. Methods: In a first step, the RAKI model was optimized for the case of strongly limited training data amount. In the iterative learning approach (termed iterative RAKI), the optimized RAKI model is initially trained using original and augmented ACS obtained from a linear parallel imaging reconstruction. Subsequently, the RAKI convolution filters are refined iteratively using original and augmented ACS extracted from the previous RAKI reconstruction. Evaluation was carried out on 200 retrospectively undersampled in-vivo datasets from the fastMRI neuro database with different contrast settings. Results: For limited training data (18 and 22 ACS lines for R=4 and R=5, respectively), iterative RAKI outperforms standard RAKI by reducing residual artefacts and yields strong noise suppression when compared to standard parallel imaging, underlined by quantitative reconstruction quality metrics. In combination with a phase constraint, further reconstruction improvements can be achieved. Additionally, iterative RAKI shows better performance than both GRAPPA and RAKI in case of pre-scan calibration with varying contrast between training- and undersampled data. On the kiloparsec scale, extragalactic radio jets show two distinct morphologies related to their power: collimated high-power jets ending in a bright termination shock and low-power jets opening up close to the core and showing a more diffuse surface brightness distribution. The emergence of this morphological dichotomy on the parsec scale at the innermost jet regions can be studied with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations of blazars in which the jet emission is strongly Doppler boosted due to relativistic bulk motion at small angles between the jet direction and the line of sight. We seek to characterize the geometry and emission profiles of the parsec-scale radio jets of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) on parsec scales to derive properties of the magnetic field, environment, and energetics for different classes of extragalactic jets. We analyze the VLBI radio data of 15 FSRQs, 11 BL Lacs, and two radio galaxies contained in both the MOJAVE data archive and the Boston University BU blazar group sample archive at 15 GHz and 43 GHz, repectively. We derived the brightness-temperature and jet-width gradients along the jet axis from parameterizations of the jets using 2D Gaussian brightness distributions. In most BL Lac objects, the diameter and brightness-temperature gradients along the jet axis can generally be described well by single power laws, while the jets of FSRQs show more complex behavior and remain more strongly collimated on larger physical scales. We find evidence for a transition of the global jet geometry from a parabolic to a conical shape in the BL Lac objects 3C 66A, Mrk 421 and BL Lacertae, the radio galaxy 3C 111 and the FSRQs CTA 26, PKS 0528+134,4 C +71.07,4C +29.45, and 3C 279 outside the Bondi sphere., Comment: 51 pages, 47 figures

With the increased sensitivity and resolution of radio interferometry the study of the collimation and acceleration region of jets in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has come into focus within the last years. Whereas a large fraction of AGN jets reveal a change from parabolic to conical collimation around the Bondi radius, a small number of sources deviate from this standard picture, including the radio galaxy NGC1052. We study the jet width profile, which provides valuable information about the interplay between the central engine and accretion disk system and the collimation and acceleration zone of the jets. We observed the double-sided active galaxy NGC1052 at six frequencies with the VLBA in 2017 and at 22GHz with RadioAstron in 2016. These data are combined with archival 15, 22, and 43 GHz multi-epoch VLBA observations. From ridge-line fitting we obtained width measurements along the jet and counter-jet which were fitted with broken power-laws. We find a break in the jet collimation profile at ~10^4 R_s (Schwarzschild radii). Downstream of the break the collimation is conical with a power-law index of 1.0 - 1.2 (cylindrical 0; parabolic 0.5; conical 1). The upstream power-law index of 0.36 for the approaching jet is neither cylindrical nor parabolic and for the receding jet with 0.16 close-to cylindrical. Both jets have an opening angle of ~30 degree at a distance of ~10^3 R_S and are well collimated with an opening angle of <10 degrees downstream of the break. There are significant differences in the upstream collimation profile between approaching (Eastern) and receding (Western) jet. Absorption or scattering in the surrounding torus as well as an accretion wind may mimic a cylindrical profile. We need to increase the observing frequencies, which do not suffer from absorption to find the true jet collimation profile upstream of 10^4 R_s., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. Despite numerous detections of individual flares, the physical origin of the rapid variability observed from blazars remains uncertain. Using Bayesian blocks and the Eisenstein-Hut HOP algorithm, we characterize flux variations of high significance in the $\gamma$-ray light curves of two samples of blazars. Daily binned long-term light curves of TeV-bright blazars observed with the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) are compared to those of GeV-bright blazars observed with the Large Area Telescope on board the $Fermi$ Gamma-ray Space Telescope ($Fermi$-LAT). We find no evidence for systematic asymmetry of the flux variations based on the derived rise and decay time scales. Additionally, we show that the daily-binned blazar light curves can be described by an exponential stochastic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process with parameters depending on energy. Our analysis suggests that the flux variability in both samples is a superposition of faster fluctuations. Transport, separation, and merging of trapped ion crystals are essential operations for most large-scale quantum computing architectures. In this work, we develop a theoretical framework that describes the dynamics of ions in time-varying potentials with a motional squeeze operator, followed by a motional displacement operator. Using this framework, we develop a new, general protocol for trapped ion transport, separation, and merging. We show that motional squeezing can prepare an ion wave packet to enable transfer from the ground state of one trapping potential to another. The framework and protocol are applicable if the potential is harmonic over the extent of the ion wave packets at all times. As illustrations, we discuss two specific operations: changing the strength of the confining potential for a single ion, and separating same-species ions with their mutual Coulomb force. Both of these operations are, ideally, free of residual motional excitation.

This report analyzes data from 2001-2017 to examine public four-year universities' spending on financial aid dollars--specifically between non-need-based and need-based aid. Our researcher found that these universities have spent nearly $32 billion of their own financial aid dollars on students who lack financial need, according to an analysis New America conducted prior. About $2 out of every $5 these public universities provided went to non-needy students--those whom the federal government deems able to afford college without financial aid. For generations, public colleges and universities, with the help of the federal government and states, provided a low-cost higher education to students in their home states. By keeping their prices low, these schools offered students from low-income and moderate-income families a gateway to the middle class. The more public universities engage in these practices, the harder it gets for others to resist for fear of putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage. As a result, schools that provide generous amounts of non-need-based aid cannot rest easy. They have to keep ratcheting up their scholarships or discounts to try to stay ahead of their competition, creating an ever-expanding arms race. Our analysis shows this "merit-aid" arms race at work.

Universal control of multiple qubits -- the ability to entangle qubits and to perform arbitrary individual qubit operations -- is a fundamental resource for quantum computation, simulation, and networking. Here, we implement a new laser-free scheme for universal control of trapped ion qubits based on microwave magnetic fields and radiofrequency magnetic field gradients. We demonstrate high-fidelity entanglement and individual control by creating symmetric and antisymmetric two-qubit maximally entangled states with fidelities in the intervals [0.9983, 1] and [0.9964, 0.9988], respectively, at 68% confidence, corrected for state initialization error. This technique is robust against multiple sources of decoherence, usable with essentially any trapped ion species, and has the potential to perform simultaneous entangling operations on many pairs of ions without increasing control signal power or complexity.

Context. Monthly-binned gamma-ray light curves of 236 bright gamma-ray sources, particularly blazars, selected from a sample of 2278 high-galactic latitude objects observed with Fermi-LAT, show flux variability characterized by power spectral densities consisting of a single power-law component, ranging from Brownian to white noise. Aims. The main goal here is to assess the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) model by studying the range of its three parameters that reproduces these statistical properties. Methods. We develop procedures for extracting values of the three OU model parameters (mean flux, correlation length, and random amplitude) from time series data, and apply them to compare numerical integrations of the OU process with the Fermi-LAT data. Results. The OU process fully describes the statistical properties of the flux variations of the 236 blazars. The distributions of the extracted OU parameters are narrowly peaked about well-defined values (sigma, mu, theta) = (0.2, -8.4, 0.5) with variances (0.004, 0.07, 0.13). The distributions of rise and decay time scales of flares in the numerical simulations, i.e. major flux variations fulfilling pre-defined criteria, are in agreement with the observed ones. The power spectral densities of the synthetic light curves are statistically indistinguishable from those of the measured light curves. Conclusions. Long-term gamma-ray flux variability of blazars on monthly time scales is well described by a stochastic model involving only three parameters. The methods described here are powerful tools to study randomness in light curves and thereby constrain the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed flux variations., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Strong and precisely-controlled interactions between quantum objects are essential for quantum information processing, simulation, and sensing, and for the formation of exotic quantum matter. A well-established paradigm for coupling otherwise weakly-interacting quantum objects is to use auxiliary bosonic quantum excitations to mediate the interactions. Important examples include photon-mediated interactions between atoms, superconducting qubits, and color centers in diamond, and phonon-mediated interactions between trapped ions and between optical and microwave photons. Boson-mediated interactions can in principle be amplified through parametric driving of the boson channel; the drive need not couple directly to the interacting quantum objects. This technique has been proposed for a variety of quantum platforms, but has not to date been realized in the laboratory. Here we experimentally demonstrate the amplification of a boson-mediated interaction between two trapped-ion qubits by parametric modulation of the trapping potential. The amplification provides up to a 3.25-fold increase in the interaction strength, validated by measuring the speedup of two-qubit entangling gates. Following our study of the radio and high-energy properties of $\gamma$-ray-emitting radio galaxies, here we investigate the kinematic and spectral properties of the parsec-scale jets of radio galaxies that have not yet been detected by Fermi-LAT. We take advantage of the regular VLBI observations provided by the TANAMI monitoring program, and explore the kinematic properties of six $\gamma$-ray-faint radio galaxies. We include publicly available VLBI kinematics of $\gamma$-ray-quiet radio galaxies monitored by the MOJAVE program and perform a Fermi-LAT analysis, deriving upper limits. We combine these results with those from our previous paper to construct the largest sample of radio galaxies with combined VLBI and $\gamma$-ray measurements to date. We find superluminal motion up to $\beta_\mathrm{app}=3.6$ in the jet of PKS 2153$-$69. We find a clear trend of higher apparent speed as a function of distance from the jet core on scales of $\sim10^5\,R_s$, corresponding to the end of the collimation and acceleration zone in nearby radio galaxies. We find evidence of subluminal apparent motion in the jets of PKS 1258$-$321 and IC 4296, and no measurable motion for PKS 1549$-$79, PKS 1733$-$565 and PKS 2027$-$308. We compare the VLBI properties of $\gamma$-ray-detected and undetected radio galaxies, and find significantly different distributions of median core flux density, and, possibly, of median core brightness temperature. We find a significant correlation between median core flux density and $\gamma$-ray flux, but no correlation with typical Doppler boosting indicators such as median core brightness temperature and core dominance. Our study suggests that high-energy emission from radio galaxies is related to parsec-scale radio emission from the inner jet, but is not driven by Doppler boosting effects, in contrast to the situation in their blazar counterparts., Comment: Main text: 15 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. Two vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) systems producing ultraviolet (UV) radiation at 235 nm and 313 nm are demonstrated. The systems are suitable for quantum information processing applications with trapped beryllium ions. Each system consists of a compact, single-frequency, continuous-wave VECSEL producing high-power near-infrared light, tunable over tens of nanometers. One system generates 2.4 W at 940 nm, using a gain mirror based on GaInAs/GaAs quantum wells, which is converted to 54 mW of 235 nm light for photoionization of neutral beryllium atoms. The other system uses a novel gain mirror based on GaInNAs/GaAs quantum-wells, enabling wavelength extension with manageable strain in the GaAs lattice. This system generates 1.6 W at 1252 nm, which is converted to 41 mW of 313 nm light that is used to laser cool trapped $^{9}$Be$^{+}$ ions and to implement quantum state preparation and detection. The 313 nm system is also suitable for implementing high-fidelity quantum gates, and more broadly, our results extend the capabilities of VECSEL systems for applications in atomic, molecular, and optical physics., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures
