Abstract

In recent decades, an increasing persistence of atmospheric circulation patterns has been observed. In the course of the associated long-lasting anticyclonic summer circulations, heat waves and drought spells often coincide, leading to so-called hotter droughts. Previous hotter droughts caused a decrease in agricultural yields and increase in tree mortality, and thus, had a remarkable effect on carbon budgets and negative economic impacts. Consequently, a quantification of ecosystem responses to hotter droughts and a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms is crucial. In this context, the European hotter drought of the year 2018 may be considered as a key event. As a first step towards the quantification of its causes and consequences, we here assess anomalies of atmospheric circulation patterns, temperature loads, and climatic water balance as potential drivers of ecosystem responses as quantified by remote sensing using the MODIS vegetation indices NDVI and EVI. To place the drought of 2018 within a climatological context, we compare its climatic features and ecosystem response with the extreme hot drought of 2003. Our results indicated 2018 to be characterized by a climatic dipole, featuring extremely hot and dry weather conditions north of the Alps but comparably cool and moist conditions across large parts of the Mediterranean. Analyzing ecosystem response of five dominant land-cover classes, we found significant positive effects of April-July climatic water balance on ecosystem productivity. Negative drought impacts appeared to affect a larger area in 2018 compared to 2003. We found a significantly higher sensitivity of pastures and arable land to climatic water balance compared to forests in both years. This study quantifies the drought of 2018 as a yet unprecedented event and provides valuable insights into the heterogeneous drought responses of European ecosystems.

Abstract

The tundra is warming more rapidly than any other biome on Earth, and the potential ramifications are far-reaching because of global feedback effects between vegetation and climate. A better understanding of how environmental factors shape plant structure and function is crucial for predicting the consequences of environmental change for ecosystem functioning. Here we explore the biome-wide relationships between temperature, moisture and seven key plant functional traits both across space and over three decades of warming at 117 tundra locations. Spatial temperature-trait relationships were generally strong but soil moisture had a marked influence on the strength and direction of these relationships, highlighting the potentially important influence of changes in water availability on future trait shifts in tundra plant communities. Community height increased with warming across all sites over the past three decades, but other traits lagged far behind predicted rates of change. Our findings highlight the challenge of using space-for-time substitution to predict the functional consequences of future warming and suggest that functions that are tied closely to plant height will experience the most rapid change. They also reveal the strength with which environmental factors shape biotic communities at the coldest extremes of the planet and will help to improve projections of functional changes in tundra ecosystems with climate warming.

Abstract

Reconstructions of past climates are based on the calibration of available proxy data. This calibration is usually achieved by means of linear regression models. In the recent paleo-climate literature there is an ongoing discussion on the validity of highly resolved climate reconstructions. The reason for this is that the proxy data are noisy, i.e. in addition to the variability that is related to the climate variable of interest, they contain other sources of variability. Inadequate treatment of such noise leads to a biased estimation of regression slopes, resulting in a wrong representation of the real amplitude of past climate variations. Methods to overcome this problem have had a limited success so far. Here, we present a new approach - SINOMA - for noisy serial data streams that are characterized by different spectral characteristics of signal and noise. SINOMA makes use of specific properties of the data streams temporal or spatial structure and by this is able to deliver a precise estimate of the true regression slope and, simultaneously, of the ratio of noise variances present in the predictor and predictand. The paper introduces the underlying mathematics as well as a general description of the presented algorithm. The validity of SINOMA is illustrated with two test data-sets. Abstract

Late-spring frost (LSF) is a critical factor influencing the functioning of temperate forest ecosystems. Frost damage in the form of canopy defoliation impedes the ability of trees to effectively photosynthesize, thereby reducing tree productivity. In recent decades, LSF frequency has increased across Europe, likely intensified by the effects of climate change. With increasing warming, many deciduous tree species have shifted towards earlier budburst and leaf development. The earlier start of the growing season not only facilitates forest productivity but also lengthens the period during which trees are most susceptible to LSF. Moreover, recent forest transformation efforts in Europe intended to increase forest resilience to climate change have focused on increasing the share of deciduous species in forests. To assess the ability of forests to remain productive under climate change, dynamic vegetation models (DVMs) have proven to be useful tools. Currently, however, most state-of-the-art DVMs do not model processes related to LSF and the associated impacts. Here, we present a novel LSF module for integration with the dynamic vegetation model Lund–Potsdam–Jena General Ecosystem Simulator (LPJ-GUESS). This new model implementation, termed LPJ-GUESS-FROST, provides the ability to directly attribute simulated impacts on forest productivity dynamics to LSF. We use the example of European beech, one of the dominant deciduous species in central Europe, to demonstrate the functioning of our novel LSF module. Using a network of tree-ring observations from past frost events, we show that LPJ-GUESS-FROST can reproduce productivity reductions caused by LSF. Further, to exemplify the effects of including LSF dynamics in DVMs, we run LPJ-GUESS-FROST for a study region in southern Germany for which high-resolution climate observations are available. Here, we show that modeled LSF plays a substantial role in regulating regional net primary production (NPP) and biomass dynamics, emphasizing the need for LSF to be more widely accounted for in DVMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many plant species reproduce by cloning if environmental conditions are unfavorable for sexual reproduction. To test the alternative hypotheses, whether cloning is an 'exit strategy' or caused by selection, clonal growth in white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) was investigated in three stands in Alaska, each consisting of a core (closed forest) plot and an edge (tree-line) plot. In total, 2571 trees were mapped and genotyped with 11 single sequence repeat (SSR) markers. The proportion of clonal trees follows a moisture gradient and was lowest in the dry Interior basin (4.5%), followed by the sites at the Alaska Range (9.0%) and the Brooks Range (21.7%). At the two latter sites, clonal growth was more frequent in the edge plot. A comparison among 960 aged trees revealed that clonal growth becomes more likely with increasing age and continues over the life span of a tree. Genetic data do not indicate any genetic predisposition for cloning. Clonal growth in white spruce most likely takes place via layering and depends on environmental conditions. Because performance of the trees, and therefore likely plant reproductive success, is lower in plots with a high proportion of clones, selection for clonal growth seems to be highly unlikely.Key words: boreal forest, climate change, clonal growth, microsatellites, Picea glauca.Plusieurs especes vegetales se reproduisent par clonage lorsque les conditions environnementales ne sont pas favorables a la reproduction sexuee. Abstract

Late-spring frost (LSF) is a critical factor influencing the functioning of temperate, forest ecosystems. Frost damage in the form of canopy defoliation impedes the ability of trees to effectively photosynthesize thereby reducing tree productivity. In recent decades, LSF frequency has increased across Europe, likely intensified by the effects of climate change. With increasing warming, many deciduous tree species have shifted towards earlier budburst and leaf development. The earlier start of the growing season not only facilitates forest productivity but also lengthens the period during which trees are most susceptible to LSF. Moreover, recent forest transformation efforts in Europe intended to increase forest resilience to climate change have focused on increasing the share of deciduous species in forests. To assess the ability of forests to remain productive under climate change, dynamic vegetation models (DVMs) have proven to be useful tools. Currently, however, most state-of-the-art DVMs do not model processes related to LSF and the associated impacts. Here, we present a novel LSF module for integration with the dynamic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS. This new model implementation, termed LPJ-GUESS-FROST, provides the ability to directly attribute impacts on simulated forest productivity dynamics to LSF. We use the example of European beech, one of the dominant deciduous species in Central Europe, to demonstrate the functioning of our novel LSF module. Using a network of tree-ring observations from past frost events we show that LPJ-GUESS-FROST can reproduce productivity reductions caused by LSF. Further, to exemplify the effects of including LSF dynamics in DVMs, we run LPJ-GUESS-FROST for a study region in southern Germany for which high-resolution climate observations are available. Here, we show that modeling LSF plays a substantial role in regulating regional NPP and biomass dynamics emphasizing the need for LSF to be more widely accounted for in DVMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
