Abstract

The panel will explore the challenges and opportunities for bridging the library and information science (LIS) research practice gap in Australia. The panel brings together participants from the Research Assistance and Development for Australian Researchers (RADAR) Grant, an initiative of the Library and Information Science Research Australia (LISRA) project. The LISRA project is a three-year project aimed at encouraging and enabling research culture and practice within the Australian LIS sector.

Abstract

Work is being carried out by the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) on improved rock breakage methods for hard rock mining using disc cutters. The first goal was to predict disc cutter forces from a knowledge of rock properties, rock boundary conditions, and cutter geometry. Two systems are being developed, both of which use an undercutting method, thus exploiting the rock's weakness in tension. One of these employs drag bits, which limits this system to weaker rocks, and the other involves an oscillating disc cutter. 18. Measurements of ice nucleation by mineral dusts in the contact mode.

Abstract

Formation of ice in Earth's atmosphere at temperatures above approximately -20 °C is one of the outstanding problems in cloud physics. Contact nucleation has been suggested as a possible mechanism for freezing at relatively high temperatures; some laboratory experiments have shown contact freezing activity at temperatures as high as -4 °C. We have investigated Arizona Test Dust and kaolinite as contact nuclei as a function of size and temperature and find that the fraction of submicron particles that are active as contact ice nuclei is less than 10-3 for -18 °C and greater. We also find that the different dusts are quite distinct in their effectiveness as contact nuclei; Arizona Test Dust catalyzed freezing in the contact mode at all mobility diameters we tested a -18 °C whereas kaolinite triggered freezing only for mobility diameters of 1000 and 500 nm at that temperature. Abstract

A detailed evaluation of 122 air samples collected in and around Libby, Montana and previously analyzed by EPA has been performed. Photographic records of each analyzed particle were collected and archived in a searchable database. The results of the study indicate that the EPA's failure to follow generally accepted procedures overestimated the concentration of regulated asbestos fibers by 10 times and by 3 times for all asbestiform fibers. These results are applicable to the analysis of naturally occurring asbestos in all parts of the country. The results demonstrate the need for detailed morphological and chemical analyses to reliably determine potential exposures and associated risks when evaluating mixed asbestos/non-asbestos environments. Abstract

The room-temperature reaction of (η5-C5H5)Co(PPh3)2 (5) with aliphatic nitro compounds, RNO2, where R = Me, Et, iPr, leads to formation of the corresponding η1-nitroso derivatives (η5-C5H5)Co(PPh3)[η1(N)-N(O)R] (6-Me, R = Me; 6-Et, R = Et; 6-Pr, R = iPr). Aromatic nitro compounds, ArNO2, where Ar = −C6H5, −p-C6H4C&tbd1;CTMS, undergo reaction with 5 to give the μ-η1:η2-nitroso derivatives, [(η5-C5H5)Co]2[μ-η1(N):η2(N,O)-N(O)R]2 (7-Ph, R = −C6H5; 7-Ar, R = −p-C6H4C&tbd1;CTMS). Complexes 6-Me and 7-Ar were characterized by X-ray crystallographic analyses.

Cut-and-break makes use of the fact that breaking rock in tension towards a free face requires a specific energy of excavation which is small in comparison with that for conventional indentation. The excavation process comprises a cutting step in which a groove is cut into the rock surface, followed by a breaking phase in which a tool is inserted into the cut to break the adjacent rock. Although cut-and-break has a long history, no new machines have been designed in the past few decades. Its application in a new experimental machine developed at the University of Queensland is described. Potential advantages that would make the process suitable for hard rock tunnelling include a probable reduction in the overall specific energy of the excavation and the small number of picks with which the cutting head would be fitted. Experiments are being carried out at the University of Queensland to develope a suitable combination of a cutting wheel, orientated in the manner of a Wohlmeyer wheel but fitted with appropriately laced picks, and a bursting wheel reorientated and redesigned so as to be carried into the slot by the cutting wheel and break away the undercut rock. A new and economical method of mechanical excavation has been developed at the University of Queensland. Cut-and-break excavation exploits the comparative weakness of rock in tension by breaking free large lumps of rock using low-energy processes. The lumps are undercut using conventional drag-tools or picks. A wedge device is then inserted into the undercut and a large lump is prised free before undercutting continues. The process is continuous, a cutting wheel fitted with drag-tools and bursting wheel doing both the cutting and breaking. As the cutting wheel rotates, the drag tools excavate a slot. When the bursting wheel is carried round into this slot by the cutting wheel, it breaks free the undercut rock using a wedging action. 49. Parent and Provider Perspectives of a Hospital-Based Bereavement Support Program in Pediatric Palliative Care.

Abstract

Context: Bereavement is an individuated, nuanced experience, and its expression is different for each parent who has cared for a dying child. Evidence highlights support is valuable to navigate this loss., Objectives: To evaluate a Bereavement Support Program from the perspectives of both families and service providers., Methods: A cross-sectional study design explored the experiences and perspectives of the benefits of various program components. Respondents were asked about accessing program components, their expectations, and parents were asked to rate the impact of program components on their grief on a scale from one, (no impact) to 100 (positive impact). Space for free text was provided throughout for additional feedback., Setting/ Participants: The survey was distributed through mailing lists of parents known to the service, referring service providers, and advertised in the program newsletter., Results: One hundred two respondents completed the survey and provided detailed comments about their experiences. Most interactions and program components were reported helpful by both parents and service providers. Parents (N = 60) reported a positive impact on grief across all program components (median impact on grief range 81-98, Interquartile range 68.5-99). There were, however, a considerable number of respondents who were unaware of some components., Conclusion: Bereavement care to navigate the devastating loss of a child is of paramount importance and can offer significant and beneficial resources for families. Abstract

Background: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nanofibers (CNT/F) have been previously investigated for their potential toxicities; however, comparative studies of the broad material class are lacking, especially those with a larger diameter. Additionally, computational modeling correlating physicochemical characteristics and toxicity outcomes have been infrequently employed, and it is unclear if all CNT/F confer similar toxicity, including histopathology changes such as pulmonary fibrosis. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 40 µg of one of nine CNT/F (MW #1-7 and CNF #1-2) commonly found in exposure assessment studies of U.S. facilities with diameters ranging from 6 to 150 nm. Human fibroblasts (0-20 µg/ml) were used to assess the predictive value of in vitro to in vivo modeling systems., Results: All materials induced histopathology changes, although the types and magnitude of the changes varied. In general, the larger diameter MWs (MW #5-7, including Mitsui-7) and CNF #1 induced greater histopathology changes compared to MW #1 and #3 while MW #4 and CNF #2 were intermediate in effect. Differences in individual alveolar or bronchiolar outcomes and severity correlated with physical dimensions and how the materials agglomerated. Human fibroblast monocultures were found to be insufficient to fully replicate in vivo fibrosis outcomes suggesting in vitro predictive potential depends upon more advanced cell culture in vitro models. Pleural penetrations were observed more consistently in CNT/F with larger lengths and diameters., Conclusion: Physicochemical characteristics, notably nominal CNT/F dimension and agglomerate size, predicted histopathologic changes and enabled grouping of materials by their toxicity profiles. Particles of greater nominal tube length were generally associated with increased severity of histopathology outcomes. Larger particle lengths and agglomerates were associated with more severe bronchi/bronchiolar outcomes. Spherical agglomerated particles of smaller nominal tube dimension were linked to granulomatous inflammation while a mixture of smaller and larger dimensional CNT/F resulted in more severe alveolar injury., (© 2021.
