The goal of this paper is to provide insights into various FACTS technologies and test a UPFC device connected to a 400 kV bus in substation Ernestinovo that will regulate the flow of active and reactive power and maintain voltage within satisfactory limits in the software package DIgSILENT Power Factory 2021. Firstly, power transmission theory is mentioned which is needed for the understanding of the operation and the purpose of FACTS devices. The types of reactive power compensation are explained and specifics of the Croatian transmission grid are mentioned. The continuation of the paper deals with the topic of FACTS devices. The reason for application of FACTS devices, their development and classifications are briefly mentioned and a detailed overview of individual FACTS devices is given. The UPFC device and the Croatian transmission grid were modeled in the software package DIgSILENT Power Factory 2021 and the power flow analysis was performed for different power ratings of UPFC based on which conclusions were given. Finally, a review of the techno-economic analysis of a potential UPFC device in substation Ernestinovo is given.
