We use time-resolved hard x-ray diffraction to investigate the structural dynamics of the multiferroic insulator TbMnO$_3$ in the low temperature antiferromagnetic and ferroelectrically ordered phase. The lattice response following photoexcitation at 1.55 eV is detected by measuring the (0 2 4) and (1 3 -5) Bragg reflections. A 0.02% tensile strain, normal to the surface, is seen to arise within 20 - 30 ps. The magnitude of this transient strain is over an order of magnitude lower than that predicted from laser-induced heating, which we attribute to a bottleneck in the energy transfer between the electronic and lattice subsystems. The timescale for the transient expansion is consistent with that of previously reported demagnetization dynamics. We discuss a possible relationship between structural and demagnetization dynamics in TbMnO$_3$, in which photoinduced atomic motion modulates the exchange interaction, leading to a destruction of the magnetic order in the system., Comment: 3 figures, 4 footnotes

The key challenge in superconductivity research is to go beyond the historical mode of discovery-driven research. We put forth a new strategy, which is to combine theoretical developments in the weak-coupling renormalization group approach with the experimental developments in lattice strain driven Fermi surface-engineering. For concreteness we theoretically investigate how superconducting tendencies will be affected by strain engineering of ruthenates' Fermi surface. We first demonstrate that our approach qualitatively reproduces recent experiments under uniaxial strain. We then note that order few $\%$ strain readily accessible to epitaxial thin films, can bring the Fermi surface close to van Hove singularity. Using the experimental observation of the change in the Fermi surface under biaxial epitaxial strain and ab-initio calculations, we predict ${\rm T}_{\rm c}$ for triplet pairing to be maximized by getting close to the van Hove singularities without tuning on to the singularity., 5 + 2 pages, 4 + 5 figures

Here we demonstrate how the Fermi surface topology and quantum many-body interactions can be manipulated via epitaxial strain in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and its isoelectronic counterpart Ba$_2$RuO$_4$ using oxide molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), \emph{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and transport measurements. Near the topological transition of the $\gamma$ Fermi surface sheet, we observe clear signatures of critical fluctuations, while the quasiparticle mass enhancement is found to increase rapidly and monotonically with increasing Ru-O bond distance. Our work demonstrates the possibilities for using epitaxial strain as a disorder-free means of manipulating emergent properties, many-body interactions, and potentially the superconductivity in correlated materials.

We report high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of epitaxial thin films of the correlated 4d transition metal oxide ferromagnet SrRuO3. The Fermi surface in the ferromagnetic state consists of well-defined Landau quasiparticles, exhibiting strong coupling to low-energy bosonic modes which contributes to the large effective masses observed by transport and thermodynamic measurements. Upon warming the material through its Curie temperature, we observe a substantial decrease in quasiparticle coherence, but negligible changes in the ferromagnetic exchange splitting, suggesting that local moments play an important role in the ferromagnetism in SrRuO3., 5 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information (see other files)

We describe a tunable low-energy photon source consisting of a laser-driven xenon plasma lamp coupled to a Czerny-Turner monochromator. The combined tunability, brightness, and narrow spectral bandwidth make this light source useful in laboratory-based high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy experiments. The source supplies photons with energies up to ~7 eV, delivering under typical conditions >10(12) ph/s within a 10 meV spectral bandwidth, which is comparable to helium plasma lamps and many synchrotron beamlines. We first describe the lamp and monochromator system and then characterize its output, with attention to those parameters which are of interest for photoemission experiments. Finally, we present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data using the light source and compare its performance to a conventional helium plasma lamp. Publisher PDF

Controlling the electronic properties of interfaces has enormous scientific and technological implications and has been recently extended from semiconductors to complex oxides which host emergent ground states not present in the parent materials. These oxide interfaces present a fundamentally new opportunity where, instead of conventional bandgap engineering, the electronic and magnetic properties can be optimized by engineering quantum many-body interactions. We utilize an integrated oxide molecular-beam epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy system to synthesize and investigate the electronic structure of superlattices of the Mott insulator LaMnO3 and the band insulator SrMnO3. By digitally varying the separation between interfaces in (LaMnO3)2n/(SrMnO3)n superlattices with atomic-layer precision, we demonstrate that quantum many-body interactions are enhanced, driving the electronic states from a ferromagnetic polaronic metal to a pseudogapped insulating ground state. This work demonstrates how many-body interactions can be engineered at correlated oxide interfaces, an important prerequisite to exploiting such effects in novel electronics., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. The correlation between electronic and crystal structures of 1T-TiSe2 in the charge density wave (CDW) state is studied by x-ray diffraction. Three families of reflections are used to probe atomic displacements and the orbital asymmetry in Se. Two distinct onset temperatures are found, TCDW and a lower T* indicative for an onset of Se out-of-plane atomic displacements. T* coincides with a DC resistivity maximum and the onset of the proposed gyrotropic electronic structure. However, no indication for chirality is found. The relation between the atomic displacements and the transport properties is discussed in terms of Ti 3d and Se 4p states that only weakly couple to the CDW order., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures + 13 pages supplementary info
