OBJECTIVE Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). METHODS In this study, we have retrospectively evaluated the major risk factors for the development of aGvHD in 100 patients who underwent allogeneic transplantation at the University Hospital in Bratislava between January 2007 and December 2011. RESULTS 29 patients acquired acute GvHD (Grade I - 12 patients, G II - 5 , G III - 3, G IV - 9). We proved a higher incidence of developing aGvHD in patients with unrelated donor type, TBI conditioning and cyclosporine (CsA) replacement with mycophenolate mofetil due to CsA nephrotoxicity, while other risk factors such as older patient age, the use of peripheral blood progenitor cells and donor/recipient sex mismatch were without statistical significance. The average time of onset of aGvHD has been 57 days (range 13-260) after HSCT. Corticosteroids were used as standard initial therapy with 52 % complete response (CR) rate, although the likelihood of response rapidly decreased with increasing severity of disease (G IV - 100 % refracterness). The response to primary therapy also correlated with overall survival. Patients with steroid-refractory aGvHD received a different second-line therapies (antithymocyte globulin, anti-TNFα antibody, anti CD52 antibody) with response rate 45 % (CR - 18 %, PR - 27 %). CONCLUSION Outcome for the patients with steroid-refractory aGvHD was poor, disease very often returned or progressed with one year mortality rate 81 % , that represents an important therapeutic problem (Tab. 2, Ref. 10).

Resonance energy transfer (RET) is of high interest for both the basic research and practical applications. It is a phenomenon of radiationless transmission of energy between donor and acceptor molecules. In this study single- and two-step (RET) was investigated between cyanine dye cations (NK1, NK2, NK3) in colloids of layered silicate, synthetic Sumecton saponite. In these systems the dye molecules played role of the energy donors (NK1) or energy acceptors (NK2, NK3) or both (NK2). The adsorption and formation of various types of dye species was studied using visible spectroscopy. The absorption spectroscopy did not detect any significant molecular aggregation of the dyes at the surface of saponite particles. The RET process was described by fluorescence spectroscopy. Both the single- and two-step RET were detected in saponite dispersion. Effects of various parameters on the efficiency of the RET process, such as dye concentrations, saponite properties the distances between co-adsorbed dye cations were found to be essential. Low dimensional metal sulfide particles have been prepared in the interlayers of montmorillonites via reactions of the metal ion-exchanged clay minerals in aqueous dispersions with gaseous hydrogen sulfide. The montmorillonites separated from the Wyoming (USA) and Jelsovy Potok (Slovakia) bentonites were saturated with Pb(2+) or Zn(2+). In the final nanohybrids, the smectite mineral can be incorporated with metal sulfide pillars and/or nanoparticles. Properties of the prepared materials were investigated by various analytical techniques. The formation of metal sulfide nanoparticles in the interlayer galleries was indicated by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. About 50% of Pb(2+) or Zn(2+) present in montmorillonite has formed metal sulfide semiconducting units. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used for characterization of starting materials and products. Ultraviolet-visible absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies confirmed that final composite systems acquired the optical properties of the incorporated quantum low dimensional systems exhibiting blue shift of the energy gap and higher oscillator strength excitonic peaks. Larger amounts of metal sulfide nanoparticles were formed in montmorillonite Jelsovy Potok probably as a consequence of its higher cation exchange capacity. Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics

The acid activation is discussed of bentonite to produce materials with increased acidity, surface area and porosity for use in a number of industrial processes. The structure and physical properties were investigated of HCl-treated bentonite from the Lieskovec deposit in Slovakia. Near-infrared and visible spectroscopy methods were used to follow the dissolution of Fe-montmorillonite and layer-charge reduction. Progressive dissolution resulted in the formation of a protonated amorphous silica phase. Si-OH groups were formed in mildly treated samples and the area of the Si-O-M(oct) band was a sensitive indicator of changes in the octahedral sheets. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of the smectite dispersions with methylene blue was shown to be an efficient method for controlling the acid activation process. Acid treatment resulted in a substantial layer-charge reduction, probably due to dissolution of MgO4(OH)2 polyhedra in the octahedral sheets. 19. Effect of Layer Charge on the Intercalation of Poly(ethylene oxide) in Layered Silicates: Implications on Nanocomposite Polymer Electrolytes

- Abstract
The effect of layer charge on the intercalation of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was investigated using a series of reduced-charge montmorillonites and smectites with varying layer charge. The amount of intercalated polymer initially increases with layer charge but then decreases. In contrast, the amount of water present continuously increases. This water is mostly coordinated with the gallery cations. When PEO is intercalated, it replaces water molecules filling the space between the hydrated exchangeable cations. Molecular simulations confirm the experiments and show that the polymer oxygen atoms do not directly associate with the exchangeable cations, which are mostly coordinated to water molecules and surface oxygen atoms.

25. Interaction of Methylene Blue with Reduced Charge Montmorillonite

- Abstract
Interaction of methylene blue (MB) with reduced charge Li−montmorillonites (RCM) in the aqueous suspensions was investigated using visible absorption spectroscopy. Dye cation agglomeration and protonation at the clay surface depended very sensitively on layer charge density. With increasing layer charge reduction, the content of agglomerates of MB cations decreased in favor of monomers and the protonated form of MB. Lower negative charge density on the clay basal surface induces a greater distance between neighboring MB cations sorbed at the clay surfaces, which suppresses dye agglomeration. Since each form of MB absorbs visible light at a different wavelength, different layer charge densities induce different colors of the resulting clay−dye suspension. Therefore, visible spectra of MB−smectite suspensions may be a simple but extremely sensitive method for the detection of layer charge density of smectites.

Background The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally. Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases. Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. - Abstract
Objective: Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT)., Methods: In this study, we have retrospectively evaluated the major risk factors for the development of aGvHD in 100 patients who underwent allogeneic transplantation at the University Hospital in Bratislava between January 2007 and December 2011., Results: 29 patients acquired acute GvHD (Grade I - 12 patients, G II - 5 , G III - 3, G IV - 9). We proved a higher incidence of developing aGvHD in patients with unrelated donor type, TBI conditioning and cyclosporine (CsA) replacement with mycophenolate mofetil due to CsA nephrotoxicity, while other risk factors such as older patient age, the use of peripheral blood progenitor cells and donor/recipient sex mismatch were without statistical significance. The average time of onset of aGvHD has been 57 days (range 13-260) after HSCT. Corticosteroids were used as standard initial therapy with 52 % complete response (CR) rate, although the likelihood of response rapidly decreased with increasing severity of disease (G IV - 100 % refracterness). The response to primary therapy also correlated with overall survival. Patients with steroid-refractory aGvHD received a different second-line therapies (antithymocyte globulin, anti-TNFα antibody, anti CD52 antibody) with response rate 45 % (CR - 18 %, PR - 27 %)., Conclusion: Outcome for the patients with steroid-refractory aGvHD was poor, disease very often returned or progressed with one year mortality rate 81 % , that represents an important therapeutic problem (Tab. 2, Ref. 10).

29. Spectral properties of rhodamine 3B adsorbed on the surface of montmorillonites with variable layer charge.

- Abstract
Montmorillonite was thermally treated at several temperatures to reduce the charge density of its layer surface. Absorption and fluorescence (steady-state and time-resolved) spectroscopies are now applied to study the adsorption of rhodamine 3B (R3B) laser dye in reduced charge montmorillonites (RCMs) in aqueous suspensions. The decrease in the charge density increases the intermolecular distance between adsorbed R3B molecules, reducing the tendency of the dye to self-associate. H-type and J-type aggregates of R3B in RCMs are spectroscopically characterized, the fluorescent J-aggregates being more extensively formed by decreasing the charge density. Both the reduction in the dye aggregation and the formation of J-type aggregates enhance the fluorescence efficiency of R3B dye adsorbed in montmorillonite particles. Absorption with linearly polarized light reveals that the H-aggregates are more disposed toward the perpendicular of the clay surface than the monomer and J-aggregates species.
