1. Automated galaxy sizes in Euclid images using the Segment Anything Model

Abstract

Stellar disk truncations, also referred to as galaxy edges, are key indicators of galactic size, determined by the radial location of the gas density threshold for star formation. Accurately measuring galaxy sizes for millions of galaxies is essential for understanding the physical processes driving galaxy evolution over cosmic time. In this study, we aim to explore the potential of the Segment Anything Model (SAM), a foundation model designed for image segmentation, to automatically identify disk truncations in galaxy images. With the Euclid Wide Survey poised to deliver vast datasets, our goal is to assess SAM's capability to measure galaxy sizes in a fully automated manner. SAM was applied to a labeled dataset of 1,047 disk-like galaxies with $M_* > 10^{10} M_{\odot}$ at redshifts up to $z \sim 1$, sourced from the HST CANDELS fields. We 'euclidized' the HST galaxy images by creating composite RGB images, using the F160W (H-band), F125W (J-band), and F814W + F606W (I-band + V-band) HST filters, respectively. Using these processed images as input for SAM, we retrieved various truncation masks for each galaxy image under different configurations of the input data. We find excellent agreement between the galaxy sizes identified by SAM and those measured manually (i.e., by using the radial positions of the stellar disk edges in galaxy light profiles), with an average deviation of approximately $3\%$. This error reduces to about $1\%$ when excluding problematic cases. Our results highlight the strong potential of SAM for detecting disk truncations and measuring galaxy sizes across large datasets in an automated way. 2. Formalization of a Language for the Construction of Design Patterns for Learning

Abstract

Design patterns for learning are about articulating, testing and sharing the principles of problem solving in the educational context. In this way, multiple patterns are developed to solve common problems, described in various pattern language formats. Therefore, this work is about characterizing and establishing functional relationships between the components involved in the construction of a learning design pattern. The research was carried out in a Delphi study of double round individual non-contact between experts (n = 14), from different areas (educational technology, e-learning, distance education, higher education), selected through the coefficient of expert competence. The main result is a pattern language composed of attributes, components, and groups of processes. It is concluded that the language obtained allows externalizing knowledge from its consistent and shareable structure, which makes it suitable for use in different scenarios that require a formal pattern language and facilitates its implementation in online learning contexts.

3. Exploring the topics, sentiments and hate speech in the Spanish information environment

Abstract

In the digital era, the internet and social media have transformed communication but have also facilitated the spread of hate speech and disinformation, leading to radicalization, polarization, and toxicity. This is especially concerning for media outlets due to their significant role in shaping public discourse. This study examines the topics, sentiments, and hate prevalence in 337,807 response messages (website comments and tweets) to news from five Spanish media outlets (La Vanguardia, ABC, El Pa\'is, El Mundo, and 20 Minutos) in January 2021. These public reactions were originally labeled as distinct types of hate by experts following an original procedure, and they are now classified into three sentiment values (negative, neutral, or positive) and main topics. The BERTopic unsupervised framework was used to extract 81 topics, manually named with the help of Large Language Models (LLMs) and grouped into nine primary categories. Results show social issues (22.22%), expressions and slang (20.35%), and political issues (11.80%) as the most discussed. Content is mainly negative (62.7%) and neutral (28.57%), with low positivity (8.73%). Toxic narratives relate to conversation expressions, gender, feminism, and COVID-19. Despite low levels of hate speech (3.98%), the study confirms high toxicity in online responses to social and political topics., Comment: 24 pages

4. The Three Hundred: The existence of massive dark matter-deficient satellite galaxies in cosmological simulations

Abstract

The observation of a massive galaxy with an extremely low dark matter content (i.e. NGC 1277) has posed questions about how such objects form and evolve in a hierarchical universe. We here report on the finding of several massive, dark matter-deficient galaxies in a set of 324 galaxy clusters theoretically modelled by means of full-physics hydrodynamical simulations. We first focus on two example galaxies selected amongst the most massive and dark matter-deficient ones. By tracing the evolution of these galaxies, we find that their lack of dark matter is a result of multiple pericentre passages. While orbiting their host halo, tidal interactions gradually strip away dark matter while preserving the stellar component. A statistical analysis of all massive satellite galaxies in the simulated clusters shows that the stellar-to-total mass ratio today is strongly influenced by the number of orbits and the distance at pericentres. Galaxies with more orbits and closer pericentres are more dark matter-deficient. Additionally, we find that massive, dark matter-deficient galaxies at the present day are either the remnants of very massive galaxies at infall or former central galaxies of infalling groups. We conclude that such massive yet dark matter-deficient galaxies exist and are natural by-products of typical cluster galaxy evolution, with no specific requirement for an exotic formation scenario., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. 5. On the Benefits of Memory for Modeling Time-Dependent PDEs

Abstract

Data-driven techniques have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). These techniques frequently offer a better trade-off between computational cost and accuracy for many PDE families of interest. For time-dependent PDEs, existing methodologies typically treat PDEs as Markovian systems, i.e., the evolution of the system only depends on the ``current state'', and not the past states. However, distortion of the input signals -- e.g., due to discretization or low-pass filtering -- can render the evolution of the distorted signals non-Markovian. In this work, motivated by the Mori-Zwanzig theory of model reduction, we investigate the impact of architectures with memory for modeling PDEs: that is, when past states are explicitly used to predict the future. We introduce Memory Neural Operator (MemNO), a network based on the recent SSM architectures and Fourier Neural Operator (FNO). We empirically demonstrate on a variety of PDE families of interest that when the input is given on a low-resolution grid, MemNO significantly outperforms the baselines without memory, achieving more than 6 times less error on unseen PDEs. Via a combination of theory and experiments, we show that the effect of memory is particularly significant when the solution of the PDE has high frequency Fourier components (e.g., low-viscosity fluid dynamics), and it also increases robustness to observation noise.

6. Semiparametric Modelling of Cancer Mortality Trends in Colombia

Abstract

In this paper, we compare semiparametric and parametric model adjustments for cancer mortality in breast and cervical cancer and prostate and lung cancer in men, according to age and period of death. Semiparametric models were adjusted for the number of deaths from the two localizations of greatest mortality by sex: breast and cervix in women; prostate and lungs in men. Adjustments in different semiparametric models were compared; which included making adjustments with different distributions and variable combinations in the parametric and non-parametric part, for localization as well as for scale. Finally, the semiparametric model with best adjustment was selected and compared to traditional model; that is, to the generalized lineal model with Poisson response and logarithmic link. Best results for the four kinds of cancer were obtained for the selected semiparametric model by comparing it to the traditional Poisson model based upon AIC, envelope correlation between estimated logarithm rate and real rate logarithm. In general, we observe that in estimation, rate increases with age; however, with respect to period, breast cancer and stomach cancer in men show a tendency to rise over time; on the other hand, for cervical cancer, it remains virtually constant, but for lung cancer in men, as of 2007, it tends to decrease., Comment: 13 pages, 4 tables, 3 figures

Abstract

The mechanisms of postacute medical conditions and unexplained symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection [Long Covid (LC)] are incompletely understood. There is growing evidence that viral persistence, immune dysregulation, and T cell dysfunction may play major roles. We performed whole-body positron emission tomography imaging in a well-characterized cohort of 24 participants at time points ranging from 27 to 910 days after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection using the radiopharmaceutical agent [18F]F-AraG, a selective tracer that allows for anatomical quantitation of activated T lymphocytes. Tracer uptake in the postacute COVID-19 group, which included those with and without continuing symptoms, was higher compared with prepandemic controls in many regions, including the brain stem, spinal cord, bone marrow, nasopharyngeal and hilar lymphoid tissue, cardiopulmonary tissues, and gut wall. T cell activation in the spinal cord and gut wall was associated with the presence of LC symptoms. In addition, tracer uptake in lung tissue was higher in those with persistent pulmonary symptoms specifically. Increased T cell activation in these tissues was also observed in many individuals without LC. Given the high [18F]F-AraG uptake detected in the gut, we obtained colorectal tissue for in situ hybridization of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and immunohistochemical studies in a subset of five participants with LC symptoms. We identified intracellular SARS-CoV-2 single-stranded spike protein-encoding RNA in rectosigmoid lamina propria tissue in all five participants and double-stranded spike protein-encoding RNA in three participants up to 676 days after initial COVID-19, suggesting that tissue viral persistence could be associated with long-term immunologic perturbations.

Abstract

We present the results of the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations taken as part of the ongoing, intensive multi-wavelength monitoring program of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 by the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping 2 (AGN STORM 2) Project. The campaign revealed an unexpected and transient obscuring outflow, never before seen in this source. Of our four XMM-Newton/NuSTAR epochs, one fortuitously taken during a bright X-ray state has strong narrow absorption lines in the high-resolution grating spectra. From these absorption features, we determine that the obscurer is in fact a multi-phase ionized wind with an outflow velocity of $\sim$5200 km s$^{-1}$, and for the first time find evidence for a lower ionization component with the same velocity observed in absorption features in the contemporaneous HST spectra. This indicates that the UV absorption troughs may be due to dense clumps embedded in diffuse, higher ionization gas responsible for the X-ray absorption lines of the same velocity. We observe variability in the shape of the absorption lines on timescales of hours, placing the variable component at roughly 1000 $R_g$ if attributed to transverse motion along the line of sight. This estimate aligns with independent UV measurements of the distance to the obscurer suggesting an accretion disk wind at the inner broad line region. We estimate that it takes roughly 200 days for the outflow to travel from the disk to our line of sight, consistent with the timescale of the outflow's column density variations throughout the campaign.

9. Frameworks, Modeling and Simulations of Misinformation and Disinformation: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

The prevalence of misinformation and disinformation poses a significant challenge in today's digital landscape. That is why several methods and tools are proposed to analyze and understand these phenomena from a scientific perspective. To assess how the mis/disinformation is being conceptualized and evaluated in the literature, this paper surveys the existing frameworks, models and simulations of mis/disinformation dynamics by performing a systematic literature review up to 2023. After applying the PRISMA methodology, 57 research papers are inspected to determine (1) the terminology and definitions of mis/disinformation, (2) the methods used to represent mis/disinformation, (3) the primary purpose beyond modeling and simulating mis/disinformation, (4) the context where the mis/disinformation is studied, and (5) the validation of the proposed methods for understanding mis/disinformation. The main findings reveal a consistent essence definition of misinformation and disinformation across studies, with intent as the key distinguishing factor. Research predominantly uses social frameworks, epidemiological models, and belief updating simulations. These studies aim to estimate the effectiveness of mis/disinformation, primarily in health and politics. The preferred validation strategy is to compare methods with real-world data and statistics. Finally, this paper identifies current trends and open challenges in the mis/disinformation research field, providing recommendations for future work agenda.

Abstract

Visual Question Answering (VQA) is an important task in multimodal AI, and it is often used to test the ability of vision-language models to understand and reason on knowledge present in both visual and textual data. However, most of the current VQA models use datasets that are primarily focused on English and a few major world languages, with images that are typically Western-centric. While recent efforts have tried to increase the number of languages covered on VQA datasets, they still lack diversity in low-resource languages. More importantly, although these datasets often extend their linguistic range via translation or some other approaches, they usually keep images the same, resulting in narrow cultural representation. To address these limitations, we construct CVQA, a new Culturally-diverse multilingual Visual Question Answering benchmark, designed to cover a rich set of languages and cultures, where we engage native speakers and cultural experts in the data collection process. As a result, CVQA includes culturally-driven images and questions from across 30 countries on four continents, covering 31 languages with 13 scripts, providing a total of 10k questions. We then benchmark several Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) on CVQA, and show that the dataset is challenging for the current state-of-the-art models. This benchmark can serve as a probing evaluation suite for assessing the cultural capability and bias of multimodal models and hopefully encourage more research efforts toward increasing cultural awareness and linguistic diversity in this field., Comment: 38th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024) Track on Datasets and Benchmarks

Abstract

This paper is focused on the segregation of FGK dwarf and giant stars through narrow-band photometric data using the Spanish Virtual Observatory (SVO) Filter Profile Service and associated photometric tools. We selected spectra from the MILES, STELIB, and ELODIE stellar libraries, and used SVO photometric tools to derive the synthetic photometry in 15 J-PAS narrow filters, which were especially selected to cover spectral features sensitive to gravity changes. Using machine-learning techniques as the Gaussian mixture model and the support vector machine, we defined several criteria based on J-PAS colours to discriminate between dwarf and giant stars. We selected five colour-colour diagrams that presented the most promising separation between both samples. Our results show an overall accuracy in the studied sample of $\sim$0.97 for FGK stars, although a dependence on the luminosity type and the stellar effective temperature was found. We also defined a colour-temperature relation for dwarf stars with effective temperatures between 4\,000 and 7\,000\,K, which allows one to estimate the stellar effective temperature from four J-PAS filters ($J0450$, $J0510$, $J0550$, and $J0620$). Abstract

We study the intracluster light (ICL) and intracluster globular clusters (ICGCs) in the nearby Perseus galaxy cluster using Euclid's EROs. By modelling the isophotal and iso-density contours, we mapped the distributions and properties of the ICL and ICGCs out to radii of 200-600 kpc (up to ~1/3 of the virial radius) from the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We find that the central 500 kpc hosts 70000$\pm$2800 GCs and $1.7\times10^{12}$ L$_\odot$ of diffuse light from the BCG+ICL in the near-infrared H$_E$. This accounts for 38$\pm$6% of the cluster's total stellar luminosity within this radius. The ICL and ICGCs share a coherent spatial distribution, suggesting a common origin or that a common potential governs their distribution. Their contours on the largest scales (>200 kpc) are offset from the BCG's core westwards by 60 kpc towards several luminous cluster galaxies. This offset is opposite to the displacement observed in the gaseous intracluster medium. The radial surface brightness profile of the BCG+ICL is best described by a double S\'ersic model, with 68$\pm$4% of the H$_E$ light in the extended, outer component. The transition between these components occurs at ~60 kpc, beyond which the isophotes become increasingly elliptical and off-centred. The radial ICGC number density profile closely follows the BCG+ICL profile only beyond this 60 kpc radius, where we find an average of 60-80 GCs per $10^9$ M$_\odot$ of diffuse stellar mass. The BCG+ICL colour becomes increasingly blue with radius, consistent with the stellar populations in the ICL having subsolar metallicities [Fe/H] ~ -0.6 to -1.0. The colour of the ICL, and the specific frequency and luminosity function of the ICGCs suggest that the ICL+ICGCs were tidally stripped from the outskirts of massive satellites with masses of a few $\times10^{10}$ M$_\odot$, with an increasing contribution from dwarf galaxies at large radii., Comment: Paper submitted as part of the A&A special issue `Euclid on Sky', which contains Euclid key reference papers and first results from the Euclid Early Release Observations. 27 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables. Abstract

The Euclid ERO programme targeted the Perseus cluster of galaxies, gathering deep data in the central region of the cluster over 0.7 square degree, corresponding to approximately 0.25 r_200. The data set reaches a point-source depth of IE=28.0 (YE, JE, HE = 25.3) AB magnitudes at 5 sigma with a 0.16" and 0.48" FWHM, and a surface brightness limit of 30.1 (29.2) mag per square arcsec. The exceptional depth and spatial resolution of this wide-field multi-band data enable the simultaneous detection and characterisation of both bright and low surface brightness galaxies, along with their globular cluster systems, from the optical to the NIR. This study advances beyond previous analyses of the cluster and enables a range of scientific investigations summarised here. We derive the luminosity and stellar mass functions (LF and SMF) of the Perseus cluster in the Euclid IE band, thanks to supplementary u,g,r,i,z and Halpha data from the CFHT. We adopt a catalogue of 1100 dwarf galaxies, detailed in the corresponding ERO paper. We identify all other sources in the Euclid images and obtain accurate photometric measurements using AutoProf or AstroPhot for 138 bright cluster galaxies, and SourceExtractor for half a million compact sources. Cluster membership for the bright sample is determined by calculating photometric redshifts with Phosphoros. Our LF and SMF are the deepest recorded for the Perseus cluster, highlighting the groundbreaking capabilities of the Euclid telescope. Both the LF and SMF fit a Schechter plus Gaussian model. The LF features a dip at M(IE)=-19 and a faint-end slope of alpha_S = -1.2 to -1.3. The SMF displays a low-mass-end slope of alpha_S = -1.2 to -1.35. Abstract

We provide an early assessment of the imaging capabilities of the Euclid space mission to probe deeply into nearby star-forming regions and associated very young open clusters, and in particular to check to what extent it can shed light on the new-born free-floating planet population. This paper focuses on a low-reddening region observed in just one Euclid pointing where the dust and gas has been cleared out by the hot sigma Orionis star. One late-M and six known spectroscopically confirmed L-type substellar members in the sigma Orionis cluster are used as benchmarks to provide a high-purity procedure to select new candidate members with Euclid. The exquisite angular resolution and depth delivered by the Euclid instruments allow us to focus on bona-fide point sources. A cleaned sample of sigma Orionis cluster substellar members has been produced and the initial mass function (IMF) has been estimated by combining Euclid and Gaia data. Our sigma Orionis substellar IMF is consistent with a power-law distribution with no significant steepening at the planetary-mass end. No evidence of a low-mass cutoff is found down to about 4 Jupiter masses at the young age (3 Myr) of the sigma Orionis open cluster., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to the A&A special issue on "Euclid on the sky"

Abstract

The Euclid ERO showcase Euclid's capabilities in advance of its main mission, targeting 17 astronomical objects, from galaxy clusters, nearby galaxies, globular clusters, to star-forming regions. A total of 24 hours observing time was allocated in the early months of operation, engaging the scientific community through an early public data release. We describe the development of the ERO pipeline to create visually compelling images while simultaneously meeting the scientific demands within months of launch, leveraging a pragmatic, data-driven development strategy. The pipeline's key requirements are to preserve the image quality and to provide flux calibration and photometry for compact and extended sources. The pipeline's five pillars are: removal of instrumental signatures; astrometric calibration; photometric calibration; image stacking; and the production of science-ready catalogues for both the VIS and NISP instruments. We report a PSF with a full width at half maximum of 0.16" in the optical and 0.49" in the three NIR bands. Our VIS mean absolute flux calibration is accurate to about 1%, and 10% for NISP due to a limited calibration set; both instruments have considerable colour terms. The median depth is 25.3 and 23.2 AB mag with a SNR of 10 for galaxies, and 27.1 and 24.5 AB mag at an SNR of 5 for point sources for VIS and NISP, respectively. Euclid's ability to observe diffuse emission is exceptional due to its extended PSF nearly matching a pure diffraction halo, the best ever achieved by a wide-field, high-resolution imaging telescope. Euclid offers unparalleled capabilities for exploring the LSB Universe across all scales, also opening a new observational window in the NIR. Abstract

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract

Deep learning (DL) techniques are a promising approach among the set of methods used in the ever-challenging determination of stellar parameters in M dwarfs. In this context, transfer learning could play an important role in mitigating uncertainties in the results due to the synthetic gap (i.e. difference in feature distributions between observed and synthetic data). We propose a feature-based deep transfer learning (DTL) approach based on autoencoders to determine stellar parameters from high-resolution spectra. Using this methodology, we provide new estimations for the effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and projected rotational velocity for 286 M dwarfs observed by the CARMENES survey. Using autoencoder architectures, we projected synthetic PHOENIX-ACES spectra and observed CARMENES spectra onto a new feature space of lower dimensionality in which the differences between the two domains are reduced. We used this low-dimensional new feature space as input for a convolutional neural network to obtain the stellar parameter determinations. We performed an extensive analysis of our estimated stellar parameters, ranging from 3050 to 4300 K, 4.7 to 5.1 dex, and -0.53 to 0.25 dex for Teff, logg, and [Fe/H], respectively. Our results are broadly consistent with those of recent studies using CARMENES data, with a systematic deviation in our Teff scale towards hotter values for estimations above 3750 K. Furthermore, our methodology mitigates the deviations in metallicity found in previous DL techniques due to the synthetic gap. We consolidated a DTL-based methodology to determine stellar parameters in M dwarfs from synthetic spectra, with no need for high-quality measurements involved in the knowledge transfer. These results suggest the great potential of DTL to mitigate the differences in feature distributions between the observations and the PHOENIX-ACES spectra., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Abstract

The Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI) sounding rocket payload flew for the second time on 2014 December 11. To enable direct Hard X-Ray (HXR) imaging spectroscopy, FOXSI makes use of grazing-incidence replicated focusing optics combined with fine-pitch solid-state detectors. FOXSI's first flight provided the first HXR focused images of the Sun. For FOXSI's second flight several updates were made to the instrument including updating the optics and detectors as well as adding a new Solar Aspect and Alignment System (SAAS). This article aims at sharing the preliminary literature review of the main developments related to Intersectional Identities in Colombian English Language Teaching and general educational contexts worldwide. First, I trace the research work concerning the topic at both national and international levels through a bibliometric analysis in Scopus to see the main developments regarding intersectionality from a decolonial perspective. Then, I show through a complementary bibliometric study, 50 articles that were collected from different databases, and the trends found as representation of intersectional studies. The analysis indicates two core trends: (1) Intersectional studies in general educational contexts and (2) Intersectional studies in ELT contexts. Finally, I present how this profiling research study shows that the topic of Intersectional Identities in Colombia seems scarce within the field of ELT.

36. Detecting the edges of galaxies with deep learning

Abstract

Galaxy edges or truncations are low-surface-brightness (LSB) features located in the galaxy outskirts that delimit the distance up to where the gas density enables efficient star formation. As such, they could be interpreted as a non-arbitrary means to determine the galaxy size and this is also reinforced by the smaller scatter in the galaxy mass-size relation when comparing them with other size proxies. However, there are several problems attached to this novel metric, namely, the access to deep imaging and the need to contrast the surface brightness, color, and mass profiles to derive the edge position. While the first hurdle is already overcome by new ultra-deep galaxy observations, we hereby propose the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms to determine the position of these features for very large datasets. We compare the semantic segmentation by our deep learning (DL) models with the results obtained by humans for HST observations of a sample of 1052 massive (M$_{\rm stellar}$ > 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) galaxies at $z < 1$. In addition, the concept of astronomic augmentations is introduced to endow the inputs of the networks with a physical meaning. Our findings suggest that similar performances than humans could be routinely achieved. The best results are obtained by combining the output of several neural networks using ensemble learning. Additionally, we find that using edge-aware loss functions allows for the networks to focus their optimization on the galaxy boundaries. The experiments reveal a great similarity between the segmentation performed by the AI compared to the human model. For the best model, an average dice of 0.8969 is achieved, while an average dice of 0.9104 is reached by the best ensemble. 38. Strong size evolution of disc galaxies since z = 1: Readdressing galaxy growth using a physically motivated size indicator

Abstract

Our understanding of how the size of galaxies has evolved over cosmic time is based on the use of the half-light (effective) radius as a size indicator. Although the half-light radius has many advantages for structurally parameterising galaxies, it does not provide a measure of the global extent of the objects, but only an indication of the size of the region containing the innermost 50% of the galaxy's light. Therefore, the observed mild evolution of the effective radius of disc galaxies with cosmic time is conditioned by the evolution of the central part of the galaxies rather than by the evolutionary properties of the whole structure. Expanding on the works by Trujillo et al. (2020) and Chamba et al. (2022), we study the size evolution of disc galaxies using as a size indicator the radial location of the gas density threshold for star formation. As a proxy to evaluate this quantity, we use the radial position of the truncation (edge) in the stellar surface mass density profiles of galaxies. To conduct this task, we have selected 1048 disc galaxies with M$_{\rm stellar}$ $>$ 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and spectroscopic redshifts up to z=1 within the HST CANDELS fields. We have derived their surface brightness, colour and stellar mass density profiles. Using the new size indicator, the observed scatter of the size-mass relation (~0.1 dex) decreases by a factor of ~2 compared to that using the effective radius. At a fixed stellar mass, Milky Way-like (M$_{\rm stellar}$ ~ 5$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) disc galaxies have on average increased their sizes by a factor of two in the last 8 Gyr, while the surface stellar mass density at the edge position has decreased by more than an order of magnitude from ~13 M$_{\odot}$/pc$^2$ (z=1) to ~1 M$_{\odot}$/pc$^2$ (z=0). Abstract

The majority of massive disk galaxies in the local Universe show a stellar barred structure in their central regions, including our Milky Way. Bars are supposed to develop in dynamically cold stellar disks at low redshift, as the strong gas turbulence typical of disk galaxies at high redshift suppresses or delays bar formation. Moreover, simulations predict bars to be almost absent beyond $z = 1.5$ in the progenitors of Milky Way-like galaxies. Here we report observations of ceers-2112, a barred spiral galaxy at redshift $z_{\rm phot} \sim 3$, which was already mature when the Universe was only 2 Gyr old. The stellar mass ($M_{\star} = 3.9 \times 10^9 M_{\odot}$) and barred morphology mean that ceers-2112 can be considered a progenitor of the Milky Way, in terms of both structure and mass-assembly history in the first 2 Gyr of the Universe, and was the closest in mass in the first 4 Gyr. We infer that baryons in galaxies could have already dominated over dark matter at $z \sim 3$, that high-redshift bars could form in approximately 400 Myr and that dynamically cold stellar disks could have been in place by redshift $z = 4-5$ (more than 12 Gyrs ago)., Comment: Published in Nature. Abstract

We fit the UV/optical lightcurves of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 to produce maps of the accretion disk temperature fluctuations $\delta T$ resolved in time and radius. The $\delta T$ maps are dominated by coherent radial structures that move slowly ($v \ll c$) inwards and outwards, which conflicts with the idea that disk variability is driven only by reverberation. Instead, these slow-moving temperature fluctuations are likely due to variability intrinsic to the disk. We test how modifying the input lightcurves by smoothing and subtracting them changes the resulting $\delta T$ maps and find that most of the temperature fluctuations exist over relatively long timescales ($\sim$100s of days). We show how detrending AGN lightcurves can be used to separate the flux variations driven by the slow-moving temperature fluctuations from those driven by reverberation. We also simulate contamination of the continuum emission from the disk by continuum emission from the broad line region (BLR), which is expected to have spectral features localized in wavelength, such as the Balmer break contaminating the $U$ band. We find that a disk with a smooth temperature profile cannot produce a signal localized in wavelength and that any BLR contamination should appear as residuals in our model lightcurves. Given the observed residuals, we estimate that only $\sim$20% of the variable flux in the $U$ and $u$ lightcurves can be due to BLR contamination. 50. A draft genome assembly of the reef-building coral Acropora hemprichii from the central Red Sea

Abstract

Abstract Coral reef ecosystems are under threat from climate change. Thus, active interventions to spur coral conservation/restoration are critical to support reef survival, greatly informed by a molecular understanding of resilience. The genus Acropora is a species-rich and globally prevalent reef builder that has experienced dramatic declines in the Caribbean. Here we generated a draft genome of the common coral Acropora hemprichii from the central Red Sea, one of the warmest water bodies in the world. We assembled the genome using 10x Chromium sequencing with subsequent scaffolding using a reference genome and Illumina short-read sequencing contigs. The A. hemprichii genome has an assembly size of 495.6 Mb confirmed using physical size estimation, of which 247.8 Mb (50%) are repeats. The scaffold N50 is 1.38 Mb with 99.6% of BUSCO genes identified (93.7% complete, 5.9% fragmented), providing a set of 26,865 protein-coding genes. The Red Sea A. hemprichii reference genome provides a valuable resource for studies aiming to decode the genomic architecture of resilience, e.g. through comparative analyses with other Acropora genomes.
