We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral-timing measurements of the prototypical Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. The source was observed with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST in June 2023 at a MIR luminosity L(MIR)~10^{36} erg/s exceeding past IR levels by about a factor of 10. By contrast, the X-ray flux is much fainter than the historical average, in the source's now-persistent 'obscured' state. The MIRI low-resolution spectrum shows a plethora of emission lines, the strongest of which are consistent with recombination in the hydrogen Pfund (Pf) series and higher. Low amplitude (~1%) but highly significant peak-to-peak photometric variability is found on timescales of ~1,000 s. The brightest Pf(6-5) emission line lags the continuum. Though difficult to constrain accurately, this lag is commensurate with light-travel timescales across the outer accretion disc or with expected recombination timescales inferred from emission line diagnostics. Using the emission line as a bolometric indicator suggests a moderate (~5-30% Eddington) intrinsic accretion rate. Multiwavelength monitoring shows that JWST caught the source close in-time to unprecedentedly bright MIR and radio long-term flaring. Assuming a thermal bremsstrahlung origin for the MIRI continuum suggests an unsustainably high mass-loss rate during this time unless the wind remains bound, though other possible origins cannot be ruled out. PAH features previously detected with Spitzer are now less clear in the MIRI data, arguing for possible destruction of dust in the interim. We present the discovery, with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), that SRGA J144459.2-604207 is a 447.9 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP), which underwent a four-week long outburst starting on 2024 February 15. The AMXP resides in a 5.22 hr binary, orbiting a low-mass companion donor with $M_d>0.1M_\odot$. We report on the temporal and spectral properties from NICER observations during the early days of the outburst, from 2024 February 21 through 2024 February 23, during which NICER also detected a type-I X-ray burst that exhibited a plateau lasting ~6 s. The spectra of the persistent emission were well described by an absorbed thermal blackbody and power-law model, with blackbody temperature $kT\approx0.9{\rm\,keV}$ and power-law photon index $\Gamma\approx1.9$. Time-resolved burst spectroscopy confirmed the thermonuclear nature of the burst, where an additional blackbody component reached a maximum temperature of nearly $kT\approx3{\rm\,keV}$ at the peak of the burst. The evolution of accreting X-ray binary systems is closely coupled to the properties of their donor stars. As a result, we can constrain the evolutionary track a system is by establishing the nature of its donor. Here, we present far-UV spectroscopy of the transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1858 in three different accretion states (low-hard, high-hard and soft). All of these spectra exhibit anomalous N\,{\sc v}, C\,{\sc iv}, Si\,{\sc iv} and He\,{\sc ii} lines, suggesting that its donor star has undergone CNO processing. We also determine the donor's effective temperature, $T_{d} \simeq 5700$~K, and radius, $R_d \simeq 1.7~R_{\odot}$, based on photometric observations obtained during quiescence. Lastly, we leverage the transient nature of the system to set an upper limit of $\dot{M}_{\rm acc} \lesssim 10^{-8.5}~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ on the present-day mass-transfer rate. Combining all these with the orbital period of the system, $P_{\rm orb} = 21.3$~hrs, we search for viable evolution paths. The initial donor masses in the allowed solutions span the range $1~M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{d,i} \lesssim 3.5~M_{\odot}$. All but the lowest masses in this range are consistent with the strong CNO-processing signature in the UV line ratios. The present-day donor mass in the permitted tracks are $0.5~M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{d,obs} \lesssim 1.3~M_{\odot}$, higher than suggested by recent eclipse modelling. Since $P_{\rm orb}$ is close to the so-called bifurcation period, both converging and diverging binary tracks are permitted. We report on X-ray (NICER/NuSTAR/MAXI/Swift) and radio (MeerKAT) timing and spectroscopic analysis from a three-month monitoring campaign in 2022 of a high-intensity outburst of the dipping neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 1A 1744-361. The 0.5-6.8 keV NICER X-ray hardness-intensity and color-color diagrams of the observations throughout the outburst suggests that 1A 1744-361 spent most of its outburst in an atoll-state, but we show that the source exhibited Z-state-like properties at the peak of the outburst, similar to a small sample of other atoll-state sources. A timing analysis with NICER data revealed several instances of an $\approx8$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO; fractional rms amplitudes of ~5%) around the peak of the outburst, the first from this source, which we connect to the normal branch QPOs (NBOs) seen in the Z-state. Our observations of 1A 1744-361 are fully consistent with the idea of the mass accretion rate being the main distinguishing parameter between atoll- and Z-states. Radio monitoring data by MeerKAT suggests that the source was at its radio-brightest during the outburst peak, and that the source transitioned from the 'island' spectral state to the 'banana' state within ~3 days of the outburst onset, launching transient jet ejecta. The observations present the strongest evidence for radio flaring, including jet ejecta, during the island-to-banana spectral state transition at low accretion rates (atoll-state). The source also exhibited Fe XXV, Fe XXVI K$\alpha$, and K$\beta$ X-ray absorption lines, whose origins likely lie in an accretion disk atmosphere., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, and 8 tables. Accretion disks around compact objects are expected to enter an unstable phase at high luminosity. One instability may occur when the radiation pressure generated by accretion modifies the disk viscosity, resulting in the cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales. Such a scenario, however, has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole. Although there are hints of these cycles in a few isolated cases, their apparent absence in the variable emission of most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a lingering puzzle. Here we report the presence of the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star. Moreover, we show that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum-from radio to X-ray-of both black holes and neutron stars at high accretion rates can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable, producing relativistic ejections during transitions that deplete or refill the inner disk. We present the long term analysis of GS 1826-238, a neutron star X-ray binary known as the "Clocked Burster", using data from NuSTAR StrayCats. StrayCats, a catalogue of NuSTAR stray light data, contains data from bright, off-axis X-ray sources that have not been focused by the NuSTAR optics. We obtained stray light observations of the source from 2014-2021, reduced and analyzed the data using nustar-gen-utils Python tools, demonstrating the transition of source from the "island" atoll state to a "banana" branch. We also present the lightcurve analysis of Type I X-Ray bursts from the Clocked Burster and show that the bursts from the banana/soft state are systematically shorter in durations than those from the island/hard state and have a higher burst fluence. From our analysis, we note an increase in mass accretion rate of the source, and a decrease in burst frequency with the transition.

Due to the structure of the NuSTAR telescope, photons at large off-axis (> 1deg) can reach the detectors directly (stray light), without passing through the instrument optics. At these off-axis angles NuSTAR essentially turns into a collimated instrument and the spectrum can extend to energies above the Pt k-edge (79 keV) of the multi-layers, which limits the effective area bandpass of the optics. We present the first scientific spectral analysis beyond 79 keV using a Cygnus X-1 observation in StrayCats, the catalog of stray light observations. This serendipitous stray light observation occurred simultaneously with an INTEGRAL observation. When the spectra are modeled together in the 30-120 keV energy band, we find that the NuSTAR stray light flux is well calibrated and constrained to be consistent with the INTEGRAL flux at the 90% confidence level. We observed the Galactic black hole X-ray binary V4641 Sgr with the high resolution transmission gratings on Chandra during the source's 2020 outburst. Over two epochs of Chandra gratings observations, we see numerous highly ionized metal lines, superimposed on a hot, disc-dominated X-ray continuum. The measured inner disc temperatures and luminosities imply an unfeasibly small inner disc radius, such that we suggest that the central engine of V4641 Sgr is obscured, and we are viewing scattered X-rays. We find that the emission lines in the Chandra spectra cannot be constrained by a single photoionized model, instead finding that two separate photoionized model components are required, one to reproduce the iron lines and a second for the other metals. We compare the observed X-ray spectra of V4641 Sgr to optical studies during previous outbursts of the source, suggesting that the lines originate in an accretion disc wind, potentially with a spherical geometry., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an updated catalog of StrayCats (a catalog of NuSTAR stray light observations of X-ray sources) that includes nearly 18 additional months of observations. StrayCats v2 has an added 53 sequence IDs, 106 rows, and 3 new identified stray light (SL) sources in comparison to the original catalog. The total catalog now has 489 unique sequence IDs, 862 entries, and 83 confirmed StrayCats sources. Additionally, we provide new resources for the community to gauge the utility and spectral state of the source in a given observation. We have created long term light curves for each identified SL source using MAXI and Swift/BAT data when available. Further, source extraction regions for 632 identified SL observations were created and are available to the public. The X-ray spectra of some active galactic nuclei (AGN) show a soft X-ray excess, emission in excess to the extrapolated primary X-ray continuum below 2 keV. Recent studies have shown that this soft excess can be described well as originating from either a relativistic ionized reflection, the extreme blurring of the reprocessed emission from the innermost region of the accretion disk, or Comptonization from an optically thick and warm region called the 'warm corona', in which electron scattering is the dominant source of opacity. To constrain the origin of the soft excess in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 926, we carry out an multi-epoch X-ray spectral study using observations from Suzaku (2009), XMM-Newton and NuSTAR (2016), and NuSTAR and Swift-XRT (2021). The broadband X-ray spectra of Mrk 926 contains: a thermally Comptonized primary continuum, a variable soft excess, and distant reflection. We find that in Mrk 926 as in so many sources, it is difficult to make a definite statement as to what is causing the observed soft excess. A warm coronal-like component is slightly preferred by the data but a reflection origin is also possible. Using archival radio data, we detect an optically-thin radio component in our broadband study of Mrk 926. While this component is consistent with an optically-thin radio jet, future multi-wavelength observations including high spatial resolution radio observations at multiple frequencies are required to probe the origin of the radio emission in more detail.

All disc-accreting astrophysical objects produce powerful outflows. In binaries containing neutron stars (NS) or black holes, accretion often takes place during violent outbursts. The main disc wind signatures during these eruptions are blue-shifted X-ray absorption lines, which are preferentially seen in disc-dominated "soft states". By contrast,optical wind-formed lines have recently been detected in "hard states", when a hot corona dominates the luminosity. The relationship between these signatures is unknown, and no erupting system has revealed wind-formed lines between the X-ray and optical bands yet, despite the many strong resonance transitions in this ultraviolet (UV) region. Here, we show that the transient NS binary Swift J1858.6-0814 exhibits wind-formed, blue-shifted absorption associated with C IV, N V and He II in time-resolved UV spectroscopy during a luminous hard state. This represents the first evidence for a warm, moderately ionized outflow component in this state. Simultaneously observed optical lines also display transient blue-shifted absorption. Decomposing the UV data into constant and variable components, the blue-shifted absorption is associated with the former. This implies that the outflow is not connect to the luminous flares in the data. The joint presence of UV and optical wind features reveals a multi-phase and/or stratified outflow from the outer disc. This type of persistent mass loss across all accretion states has been predicted by radiation-hydrodynamic simulations and helps to explain the shorter-than-expected outbursts duration., Comment: Published in Nature. StrayCats, the catalog of NuSTAR stray light observations, contains data from bright X-ray sources that fall within crowded source regions. These observations offer unique additional data with which to monitor sources like X-ray binaries that show variable timing behavior. In this work, we present a timing analysis of stray light data of the high mass X-ray binary SMC X-1, the first scientific analysis of a single source from the StrayCats project. We describe the process of screening stray light data for scientific analysis, verify the orbital ephemeris, and create both time and energy resolved pulse profiles. We find that the orbital ephemeris of SMC X-1 is unchanged and confirm a long-term spin up rate of $\dot{\nu}=(2.52\pm0.03)\times10^{-11}$ Hz s$^{-1}$. We also note that the shape of SMC X-1's pulse profile, while remaining double-peaked, varies significantly with time and only slightly with energy., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We present a spectral analysis of NuSTAR and NICER observations of the luminous, persistently accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2. The data were divided into different branches that the source traces out on the Z-track of the X-ray color-color diagram; namely the horizontal branch, normal branch, and the vertex between the two. The X-ray continuum spectrum was modeled in two different ways that produced a comparable quality fit. The spectra showed clear evidence of a reflection component in the form of a broadened Fe K line, as well as a lower energy emission feature near 1 keV likely due to an ionized plasma located far from the innermost accretion disk. We account for the reflection spectrum with two independent models (relxillns and rdblur*rfxconv). The inferred inclination is in agreement with earlier estimates from optical observations of ellipsoidal light curve modeling (relxillns: $i=67^{\circ}\pm4^{\circ}$, rdblur*rfxconv: $i=60^{\circ}\pm10^{\circ}$). The inner disk radius remains close to the NS ($R_{\rm in}\leq1.15\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$) regardless of the source position along the Z-track or how the 1 keV feature is modeled. Given the optically determined NS mass of $1.71\pm0.21\ M_{\odot}$, this corresponds to a conservative upper limit of $R_{\rm in}\leq19.5$ km for $M=1.92\ M_{\odot}$ or $R_{\rm in}\leq15.3$ km for $M=1.5\ M_{\odot}$. We examine archival XMM-Newton data on the extremely variable narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) active galactic nucleus (AGN) 1H 0707-495. We construct fractional excess variance (Fvar) spectra for each epoch, including the recent 2019 observation taken simultaneously with eROSITA. We explore both intrinsic and environmental absorption origins for the variability in different epochs, and examine the effect of the photoionised emission lines from outflowing gas. In particular, we show that the unusual soft variability first detected by eROSITA in 2019 is due to a combination of an obscuration event and strong suppression of the variance at 1 keV by photoionised emission, which makes the variance below 1 keV appear more extreme. We also examine the variability on long timescales, between observations, and find that it is well described by a combination of intrinsic variability and absorption variability. We suggest that the typical extreme high frequency variability which 1H 0707-495 is known for is intrinsic to the source, but the large amplitude, low frequency variability that causes prolonged low-flux intervals is likely dominated by variable low-ionisation, low velocity absorption., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a systematic spectral-timing analysis of a fast appearance/disappearance of a type-B quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO), observed in four NICER observations of MAXI J1348-630. By comparing the spectra of the period with and without the type-B QPO, we found that the main difference appears at energy bands above ~2 keV, suggesting that the QPO emission is dominated by the hard Comptonised component. During the transition, a change in the relative contribution of the disk and Comptonised emission was observed. The disk flux decreased while the Comptonised flux increased from non-QPO to type-B QPO. However, the total flux did not change too much in the NICER band. Our results reveal that the type-B QPO is associated with a redistribution of accretion power between the disk and Comptonised emission. When the type-B QPO appears, more accretion power is dissipated into the Comptonised region than in the disk. Our spectral fits give a hint that the increased Comptonised emission may come from an additional component that is related to the base of the jet., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of eclipses in the X-ray light curves of the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6-0814. From these, we find an orbital period of $P=76841.3_{-1.4}^{+1.3}$ s ($\approx21.3$ hours) and an eclipse duration of $t_{\rm ec}=4098_{-18}^{+17}$ s ($\approx1.14$ hours). We also find several absorption dips during the pre-eclipse phase. From the eclipse duration to orbital period ratio, the inclination of the binary orbit is constrained to $i>70^\circ$. The most likely range for the companion mass suggests that the inclination is likely to be closer to this value than $90^\circ$. The eclipses are also consistent with earlier data, in which strong variability ('flares') and the long orbital period prevent clear detection of the period or eclipses. We also find that the bright flares occurred preferentially in the post-eclipse phase of the orbit, likely due to increased thickness at the disc-accretion stream interface preventing flares being visible during the pre-eclipse phase. This supports the notion that variable obscuration is responsible for the unusually strong variability in Swift J1858.6-0814., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted

We present the first joint NuSTAR and NICER observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 1543$-$624 obtained in 2020 April. The source was at a luminosity of $L_{0.5-50\ \mathrm{keV}} = 4.9 (D/7\ \mathrm{kpc})^{2}\times10^{36}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ and showed evidence of reflected emission in the form of an O VIII line, Fe K line, and Compton hump within the spectrum. We used a full reflection model, known as xillverCO, that is tailored for the atypical abundances found in UCXBs, to account for the reflected emission. We tested the emission radii of the O and Fe line components and conclude that they originate from a common disk radius in the innermost region of the accretion disk ($R_{\rm in} \leq1.07\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$). Assuming that the compact accretor is a neutron star (NS) and the position of the inner disk is the Alfv\'{e}n radius, we placed an upper limit on the magnetic field strength to be $B\leq0.7(D/7\ \mathrm {kpc})\times10^{8}$ G at the poles. Given the lack of pulsations detected and position of $R_{\rm in}$, it was likely that a boundary layer region had formed between the NS surface and inner edge of the accretion disk with an extent of 1.2 km. This implies a maximum radius of the neutron star accretor of $R_{\mathrm{NS}}\leq 12.1$ km when assuming a canonical NS mass of 1.4 $M_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We continue the analysis of NuSTAR data from the recent discovery outburst of MAXI J1820+070 (optical counterpart ASASSN-18ey), focussing on an observation including unusual flaring behaviour during the hard to soft state transition, which is a short phase of outbursts and so comparatively rarely observed. Two plateaus in flux are separated by a variable interval lasting ~10 ks, which shows dipping then flaring stages. The variability is strongest (with fractional variability up to $F_{\rm Var}\sim10\%$) at high energies and reduces as the contribution from disc emission becomes stronger. Flux-resolved spectra show that the variability is primarily due to the power law flux changing. We also find a long soft lag of the thermal behind the power law emission, which is $20_{-1.2}^{+1.6}$ s during the flaring phase. The lag during the dipping stage has a different lag-energy spectrum, which may be due to a wave passing outwards through the disc. Time resolved spectral fitting suggests that the lag during the flaring stage may be due to the disc re-filling after being disrupted to produce the power law flare, perhaps related to the system settling after the jet ejection which occurred around 1 day before. Swift J1858.6-0814 is a recently discovered X-ray binary notable for extremely strong variability (by factors $>100$ in soft X-rays) in its discovery state. We present the detection of five thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from Swift J1858.6-0814, implying that the compact object in the system is a neutron star. Some of the bursts show photospheric radius expansion, so their peak flux can be used to estimate the distance to the system. The peak luminosity, and hence distance, can depend on several system parameters; for the most likely values, a high inclination and a helium atmosphere, $D=12.8_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ kpc, although systematic effects allow a conservative range of $9-18$ kpc. Before one burst, we detect a QPO at $9.6\pm0.5$ mHz with a fractional rms amplitude of $2.2\pm0.2$% ($0.5-10$ keV), likely due to marginally stable burning of helium; similar oscillations may be present before the other bursts but the light curves are not long enough to allow their detection. We also search for burst oscillations but do not detect any, with an upper limit in the best case of 15% fractional amplitude (over $1-8$ keV). Finally, we discuss the implications of the neutron star accretor and this distance on other inferences which have been made about the system. The hard X-ray spectrum of magnetic cataclysmic variables can be modelled to provide a measurement of white dwarf mass. This method is complementary to radial velocity measurements, which depend on the (typically rather uncertain) binary inclination. Here we present results from a Legacy Survey of 19 magnetic cataclysmic variables with NuSTAR. We fit accretion column models to their 20-78 keV spectra and derive the white dwarf masses, finding a weighted average $\bar{M}_{\rm WD}=0.77\pm0.02$ $M_{\odot}$, with a standard deviation $\sigma=0.10$ $M_{\odot}$, when we include the masses derived from previous NuSTAR observations of seven additional magnetic cataclysmic variables. We find that the mass distribution of accreting magnetic white dwarfs is consistent with that of white dwarfs in non-magnetic cataclysmic variables. Both peak at a higher mass than the distributions of isolated white dwarfs and post-common-envelope binaries. We speculate as to why this might be the case, proposing that consequential angular momentum losses may play a role in accreting magnetic white dwarfs and/or that our knowledge of how the white dwarf mass changes over accretion-nova cycles may also be incomplete., Comment: 14 pages. 5 figures in main paper, 1 figure in appendix. We find soft X-ray emission lines from the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6-0814 in data from XMM-Newton-RGS: N VII, O VII and O VIII, as well as notable residuals short of a detection at Ne IX and other higher ionisation transitions. These could be associated with the disc atmosphere, as in accretion disc corona sources, or with a wind, as has been detected in Swift J1858.6-0814 in emission lines at optical wavelengths. Indeed, the N VII line is redshifted, consistent with being the emitting component of a P-Cygni profile. We find that the emitting plasma has an ionisation parameter $\log(\xi)=1.35\pm0.2$ and a density $n>1.5\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. From this, we infer that the emitting plasma must be within $10^{13}$ cm of the ionising source, $\sim5\times10^{7}r_{\rm g}$ for a $1.4M_{\odot}$ neutron star, and from the line width that it is at least $10^4r_{\rm g}$ away ($2\times10^{9}(M/1.4M_{\odot})$ cm). We present a detailed X-ray spectral and variability study of the full 2018 outburst of MAXI J1727-203 using NICER observations. The outburst lasted approximately four months. Spectral modelling in the 0.3-10 keV band shows the presence of both a soft thermal and a hard Comptonised component. The analysis of these components shows that MAXI J1727-203 evolved through the soft, intermediate and hard spectral states during the outburst. We find that the soft (disc) component was detected throughout almost the entire outburst, with temperatures ranging from ~0.4 keV, at the moment of maximum luminosity, to ~0.1 keV near the end of the outburst. The power spectrum in the hard and intermediate states shows broadband noise up to 20 Hz, with no evidence of quasi-periodic oscillations. We also study the rms spectra of the broadband noise at 0.3-10 keV of this source. We find that the fractional rms increases with energy in most of the outburst except during the hard state, where the fractional rms remains approximately constant with energy. We also find that, below 3 keV, the fractional rms follows the same trend generally observed at energies >3 keV, a behaviour known from previous studies of black holes and neutron stars. Swift J1858.6-0814 is a transient neutron star X-ray binary discovered in October 2018. Multi-wavelength follow-up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum revealed many interesting properties, such as erratic flaring on minute timescales and evidence for wind outflows at both X-ray and optical wavelengths, strong and variable local absorption, and an anomalously hard X-ray spectrum. Here, we report on a detailed radio observing campaign consisting of one observation at 5.5/9 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and nine observations at 4.5/7.5 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. A radio counterpart with a flat to inverted radio spectrum is detected in all observations, consistent with a compact jet being launched from the system. Swift J1858.6-0814 is highly variable at radio wavelengths in most observations, showing significant variability when imaged on 3-to-5-minute timescales and changing up to factors of 8 within 20 minutes. The periods of brightest radio emission are not associated with steep radio spectra, implying they do not originate from the launching of discrete ejecta. We find that the radio variability is similarly unlikely to have a geometric origin, be due to scintillation, or be causally related to the observed X-ray flaring. Instead, we find that it is consistent with being driven by variations in the accretion flow propagating down the compact jet. We compare the radio properties of Swift J1858.6-0814 with those of Eddington-limited X-ray binaries with similar X-ray and optical characteristics, but fail to find a match in radio variability, spectrum, and luminosity., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The black hole candidate and X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 was discovered in September 2017. During the decay of its discovery outburst, and before returning to quiescence, the source underwent at least four reflaring events, with peak luminosities of $\sim$10$^{35-36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (d/4.1 kpc)$^2$. To investigate the nature of these flares, we analysed a sample of NICER observations taken with almost daily cadence. In this work we present the detailed spectral and timing analysis of the evolution of the four reflares. The higher sensitivity of NICER at lower energies, in comparison with other X-ray detectors, allowed us to constrain the disc component of the spectrum at $\sim$0.5 keV. We found that during each reflare the source appears to trace out a q-shaped track in the hardness-intensity diagram similar to those observed in black hole binaries during full outbursts. MAXI J1535-571 transits between the hard state (valleys) and softer states (peaks) during these flares. Moreover, the Comptonised component is undetected at the peak of the first reflare, while the disc component is undetected during the valleys. Assuming the most likely distance of 4.1 kpc, we find that the hard-to-soft transitions take place at the lowest luminosities ever observed in a black hole transient, while the soft-to-hard transitions occur at some of the lowest luminosities ever reported for such systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal

We present the discovery of an optical accretion disk wind in the X-ray transient Swift J1858.6-0814. Our 90-spectrum data set, taken with the 10.4m GTC telescope over 8 different epochs and across five months, reveals the presence of conspicuous P-Cyg profiles in He I at 5876 Angs and Halpha. These features are detected throughout the entire campaign, albeit their intensity and main observational properties are observed to vary on time-scales as short as five minutes. In particular, we observe significant variations in the wind velocity, between a few hundreds and ~ 2400 km/s. In agreement with previous reports, our observations are characterised by the presence of frequent flares, although the relation between the continuum flux variability and the presence/absence of wind features is not evident. The reported high activity of the system at radio waves indicates that the optical wind of Swift J1858.6-0814 is contemporaneous with the radio-jet, as is the case for the handful of X-ray binary transients that have shown so far optical P-Cyg profiles. Finally, we compare our results with those of other sources showing optical accretion disk winds, with emphasis on V404 Cyg and V4641 Sgr, since they also display strong and variable optical wind features as well as similar flaring behaviour., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We explore a disc origin for the highly-blueshifted, variable absorption lines seen in the X-ray spectrum of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS13224-3809. The blueshift corresponds to a velocity of about 0.25c. Such features in other Active Galactic Nuclei are often interpreted as UltraFast Outflows (UFOs). The velocity is of course present in the orbital motions of the inner disk. The absorption lines in IRAS13224-3809 are best seen when the flux is low and the reflection component of the disk is strong relative to the power-law continuum. The spectra are consistent with a model in which the reflection component passes through a thin, highly-ionized absorbing layer at the surface of the inner disc, the blue-shifted side of which dominates the flux due to relativistic aberration (the disc inclination is about 70 deg). We present a qualitative search for ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) in excess variance spectra of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN). We analyse 42 sources from the Tombesi et al. (2010) spectroscopic UFO detection sample, and an additional 22 different sources from the Kara et al. (2016) variability sample. A total of 58 sources have sufficient observational data from XMM-Newton EPIC-pn and variability for an excess variance spectrum to be calculated. We examine these spectra for peaks corresponding to variable blue-shifted H- and He-like ion absorption lines from UFOs. We find good evidence for such outflows in 28% of the AGN sample and weak evidence in a further 31%, meaning that $\sim$ 30-60% of the AGN sample hosts such UFOs. The mean and median blue-shifted velocity is found to be $\sim$ 0.14c and 0.12c, respectively. Current variability methods allow for a fast, model-independent determination of UFOs, however, further work needs to be undertaken to better characterize the statistical significance of the peaks in these spectra by more rigorous modelling. Detecting good evidence for variable UFO lines in a large number of sources also lays the groundwork for detailed analysis of the variability timescales of the absorbers. MAXI J1820+070 (optical counterpart ASASSN-18ey) is a black hole candidate discovered through its recent very bright outburst. The low extinction column and long duration at high flux allow detailed measurements of the accretion process to be made. In this work, we compare the evolution of X-ray spectral and timing properties through the initial hard state of the outburst. We show that the inner accretion disc, as measured by relativistic reflection, remains steady throughout this period of the outburst. Nevertheless, subtle spectral variability is observed, which is well explained by a change in coronal geometry. However, characteristic features of the temporal variability - low-frequency roll-over and QPO frequency - increase drastically in frequency, as the outburst proceeds. This suggests that the variability timescales are governed by coronal conditions rather than solely by the inner disc radius. We also find a strong correlation between X-ray luminosity and coronal temperature. The launch of the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) heralded a new era of sensitive high energy X-ray spectroscopy for X-ray binaries (XRBs). In this paper we show how multiple physical parameters can be measured from the accretion disk spectrum when the high-energy side of the disk spectrum can be measured precisely using NuSTAR. This immediately makes two exciting developments possible. If the mass and distance of the source are known, the continuum fitting method can be used to calculate the spin and inner disk inclination independently of the iron line fitting method. If the mass and distance are unknown, the two methods can be combined to constrain these values to a narrow region of parameter space. In this paper we perform extensive simulations to establish the reliability of these techniques. We find that with high quality spectra, spin and inclination can indeed be simultaneously measured using the disk spectrum. These measurements are much more precise at higher spin values, where the relativistic effects are stronger. The inclusion of a soft X-ray snapshot observation alongside the NuSTAR data significantly improves the reliability, particularly for lower temperature disks, as it gives a greatly improved measurement of the disk peak. High signal to noise data are not necessary for this, as measuring the peak temperature is relatively easy. We present measurements of the coronae of two AGN from hard X-ray observations made with NuSTAR: ESO 103-035, a moderately to highly obscured source with significant reflection; and IGR 2124.7+5058, a radio-loud source with a very hard spectrum. Using an exponentially cut-off powerlaw model for the coronal emission spectrum gives a high-energy cut-off of $100_{-30}^{+90}$ keV for ESO 103-035 and $80_{-9}^{+11}$ keV for IGR 2124.7+5058, within the typical range for AGN. Fitting with physical Comptonisation models shows that these correspond to a temperature of $22_{-6}^{+19}$ and $20_{-2}^{+3}$ keV respectively. Ultrafast outflows (UFOs) have recently been found in the spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and are strong candidates for driving AGN feedback. 1H0707-495 is a highly accreting narrow line Seyfert 1 and the second most X-ray variable bright AGN. Previous studies found evidence of blueshifted absorption at 0.1-0.2c in its spectrum. We perform a flux-resolved analysis of the full XMM-Newton dataset on this AGN using both CCD and grating data, focusing on the low flux spectrum. We find strong evidence for an ultrafast outflow in absorption at $\sim$0.13c, with an ionisation parameter $\log(\xi$/erg cm s$^{-1})=4.3$. Surprisingly, we also detect blueshifted photoionised emission, with the velocity increasing at higher ionisation states, consistent with a trend that has been observed in the UV spectrum of this object. The bulk of the X-ray emitting material is moving at a velocity of 8000 km/s, with ionisation parameter $\log(\xi$/erg cm s$^{-1})=2.4$. The wind kinetic power inferred from the UFO absorption is comparable to that of the UV and X-ray emission features despite their different velocities and ionisation states, suggesting that we are viewing an energy-conserving wind slowing down and cooling at larger distances from the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

The narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) IRAS 13224-3809 is the most X-ray variable active galactic nucleus (AGN), exhibiting 0.3-10 keV flux changes of over an order of magnitude within an hour. We report on the results of the 1.5 Ms 2016 XMM-Newton/NuSTAR observing campaign, which revealed the presence of a 0.24c ultra-fast outflow in addition to the well-known strong relativistic reflection. We also summarise other key results of the campaign, such as the first detection of a non-linear RMS-flux relation in an accreting source, correlations between outflow absorption strength/velocity and source flux, and a disconnect between the X-ray and UV emission. We present two new NuSTAR observations of the narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 766 and give constraints on the two scenarios previously proposed to explain its spectrum and that of other NLS1s: relativistic reflection and partial covering. The NuSTAR spectra show a strong hard (>15 keV) X-ray excess, while simultaneous soft X-ray coverage of one of the observations provided by XMM-Newton constrains the ionised absorption in the source. The pure reflection model requires a black hole of high spin ($a>0.92$) viewed at a moderate inclination ($i=46^{+1}_{-4}$ degrees). The pure partial covering model requires extreme parameters: the cut-off of the primary continuum is very low ($22^{+7}_{-5}$ keV) in one observation and the intrinsic X-ray emission must provide a large fraction (75%) of the bolometric luminosity. Allowing a hybrid model with both partial covering and reflection provides more reasonable absorption parameters and relaxes the constraints on reflection parameters. The fractional variability reduces around the iron K band and at high energies including the Compton hump, suggesting that the reflected emission is less variable than the continuum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS accepted

We collate active galactic nuclei (AGN) with reported detections of both relativistic reflection and ultra-fast outflows. By comparing the inclination of the inner disc from reflection with the line-of-sight velocity of the outflow, we show that it is possible to meaningfully constrain the geometry of the absorbing material. We find a clear relation between the velocity and inclination, and demonstrate that it can potentially be explained either by simple wind geometries or by absorption from the disc surface. Due to systematic errors and a shortage of high- quality simultaneous measurements our conclusions are tentative, but this study represents a proof-of-concept that has great potential., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted to MNRAS letters

We present a detailed spectral analysis of the recent 1.5\,Ms XMM-Newton observing campaign on the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS~13224$-$3809, taken simultaneously with 500\,ks of NuSTAR data. The X-ray lightcurve shows three flux peaks, registering at about 100 times the minimum flux seen during the campaign, and rapid variability with a time scale of kiloseconds. The spectra are well fit with a primary powerlaw continuum, two relativistic-blurred reflection components from the inner accretion disk with very high iron abundance, and a simple blackbody-shaped model for the remaining soft excess. The spectral variability is dominated by the power law continuum from a corona region within a few gravitational radii from the black hole. Additionally, blueshifted Ne \textsc{x}, Mg \textsc{xii}, Si \textsc{xiv} and S \textsc{xvi} absorption lines are identified in the stacked low-flux spectrum, confirming the presence of a highly ionized outflow with velocity up to $v= 0.267$ and $0.225$\,c. We fit the absorption features with \texttt{xstar} models and find a relatively constant velocity outflow through the whole observation. Finally, we replace the \texttt{bbody} and supersolar abundance reflection models by fitting the soft excess successfully with the extended reflection model \texttt{relxillD}, which allows for higher densities than the standard \texttt{relxill} model. This returns a disk electron density $n_{\rm e}>10^{18.7}$\,cm$^{-3}$ and lowers the iron abundance from $Z_{\rm Fe}=24^{+3}_{-4}Z_\odot$ with $n_{\rm e}\equiv10^{15}$\,cm$^{-3}$ to $Z_{\rm Fe}=6.6^{+0.8}_{-2.1}Z_\odot$., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. We present a detailed X-ray timing analysis of the highly variable NLS1 galaxy, IRAS 13224-3809. The source was recently monitored for 1.5 Ms with XMM-Newton which, combined with 500 ks archival data, makes this the best studied NLS1 galaxy in X-rays to date. We apply standard time- and Fourier-domain in order to understand the underlying variability process. The source flux is not distributed lognormally, as would be expected for accreting sources. The first non-linear rms-flux relation for any accreting source in any waveband is found, with $\mathrm{rms} \propto \mathrm{flux}^{2/3}$. The light curves exhibit significant strong non-stationarity, in addition to that caused by the rms-flux relation, and are fractionally more variable at lower source flux. The power spectrum is estimated down to $\sim 10^{-7}$ Hz and consists of multiple peaked components: a low-frequency break at $\sim 10^{-5}$ Hz, with slope $\alpha < 1$ down to low frequencies; an additional component breaking at $\sim 10^{-3}$ Hz. Using the high-frequency break we estimate the black hole mass $M_\mathrm{BH} = [0.5-2] \times 10^{6} M_{\odot}$, and mass accretion rate in Eddington units, $\dot m_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 1$. The non-stationarity is manifest in the PSD with the normalisation of the peaked components increasing with decreasing source flux, as well as the low-frequency peak moving to higher frequencies. We also detect a narrow coherent feature in the soft band PSD at $0.7$ mHz, modelled with a Lorentzian the feature has $Q \sim 8$ and an $\mathrm{rms} \sim 3$ %. We present results from the optical, ultraviolet and X-ray monitoring of the NLS1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 taken with Swift and XMM-Newton during 2016. IRAS 13224-3809 is the most variable bright AGN in the X-ray sky and shows strong X-ray reflection, implying that the X-rays strongly illuminate the inner disc. Therefore, it is a good candidate to study the relationship between coronal X-ray and disc UV emission. However, we find no correlation between the X-ray and UV flux over the available ~40 day monitoring, despite the presence of strong X-ray variability and the variable part of the UV spectrum being consistent with irradiation of a standard thin disc. This means either that the X-ray flux which irradiates the UV emitting outer disc does not correlate with the X-ray flux in our line of sight and/or that another process drives the majority of the UV variability. We present a spectral-variability analysis of the low-redshift quasar PDS 456 using principal component analysis. In the XMM-Newton data, we find a strong peak in the first principal component at the energy of the Fe absorption line from the highly blueshifted outflow. This indicates that the absorption feature is more variable than the continuum, and that it is responding to the continuum. We find qualitatively different behaviour in the Suzaku data, which is dominated by changes in the column density of neutral absorption. In this case, we find no evidence of the absorption produced by the highly ionized gas being correlated with this variability. Additionally, we perform simulations of the source variability, and demonstrate that PCA can trivially distinguish between outflow variability correlated, anti-correlated, and un-correlated with the continuum flux. Here, the observed anti-correlation between the absorption line equivalent width and the continuum flux may be due to the ionization of the wind responding to the continuum. Finally, we compare our results with those found in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 IRAS 13224-3809.
