Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have relevance in extensive applications such as gas adsorption, separation, and energy storage. The tunability demonstrated by MOFs has encouraged research on MOF database generation via distinct methodologies. One of the crucial stages of these procedures is pre-processing, which often includes extraction of the building units (BUs). The process of BU extraction is intricate, and it is further amplified with the presence of solvent molecules/ions in the structure. This work presents MOF BU developer (mBUD), a platform to deconstruct the BUs, such as metal nodes, organic linkers, and functional groups of the MOF structure. The deconstruction algorithm has been assessed on the MOF structures of the CoRE MOF 2019 database. A total of 2,580 BUs have been extracted and provided as a database. This platform has been utilized to create a ready-to-use database of unique BUs deconstructed from the CoRE MOF database. We have also provided the web version of mBUD that can be easily used to extract BUs. These BUs can be employed to develop hypothetical MOF structures. It is envisaged that the BU database built with the deconstruction platform will aid the design of novel application-specific MOFs.

New three-dimensional spin crossover (SCO) coordination polymers systematically constructed by the novel building unit [AgI2(CN)3], FeII(3-Br-5-CH3pyridine)2[AgI2(CN)3][AgI(CN)2] (1), FeII(3-Br-5-Clpyridine)2[AgI2(CN)3][AgI(CN)2] (2), and FeII(3,5-Brpyridine)2[AgI2(CN)3][AgI(CN)2] (3), have been synthesized and characterized. The bismonodentate binuclear [Ag2(CN)3]- and mononuclear [AgI(CN)2]- units and FeII atoms assemble to form a 3D network structure. The structures of 1-3 are crystallographically identical, which made up the triply interpenetration combined with complicated intermolecular interactions including Ag···Ag, Ag···X (pyridine substituents) and π-stacking interactions. Magnetic and differential scanning calorimetry studies were performed for 1-3. These compounds display a similar SCO behavior, while the critical temperatures (Tc) are shifted by the substituent effect. Due to the identical structures of 1-3, the order of Tc clearly corresponds with the Hammett constant.

An approach to description of the structural types of phases is suggested, in accordance with which the structural types A15, C15 and C14 of Frank–Kasper phases are described as the densest packing of chains of special unions of tetrahedrons-tetrablocks. A tetrablock is a seven-vertex union of four tetrahedrons over faces. For the packing to be the densest, the ideal tetrahedrons in the tetrablocks should undergo a minimum possible deformation. Since a tetrablock is a natural structural unit of one-dimensional chains, the approach developed may be used for plotting structural models of phase transitions where the transformation develops within linear substructures. Chains of tetrablocks may also be structural components of metallic melts and glasses.

The most effective methodologies for the construction of polynuclear complexes usually take advantage of preorganized building blocks. Herein, we successfully developed a new versatile heterometallic {BiNb4} moiety, which can be applied for the assembly of less explored organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxoniobates. Through controlled condensation reactions, three {BiNb4} moieties can be assembled into a pair of isomeric Bi3Nb18 clusters at different temperatures; whilst four {BiNb4} moieties can be combined into two unique Bi4Nb16 and Bi4Nb18 tetramers in different solvents. Interestingly, we have used mass spectrometry to probe the above condensation reactions, which clearly confirmed a stepwise bottom-up assembly process by capturing the presence of bismuth subsalicylate precursors, salicylate coordinated intermediates, Nb incorporated {BiNb4} moieties and the final BixSiby-oxo clusters, respectively. Moreover, the packing modes of the {BiNb4} units induce different solution behaviors, and the {BiNb4} units in Bi4Nb16 can be recombined by post-synthetic recrystallization in acetonitrile to produce a new tetramer Bi4Nb18-R. Therefore, this work provides not only a useful {BiNb4} building unit but also the mechanism for their condensation, both of which will promote the future development of metal-oxo clusters.

Herein, a novel non-planar 2D COF with a stair-stepped structure was constructed from a Z-shaped building block for the first time. Compared with its similar planar COF, the unique stair-stepped non-planar COF possesses larger surface area and stronger fluorescence, which was further applied for specific explosive detection through a fluorescence quenching mechanism. This work not only extends the traditional planar 2D COF structures to unique non-planar structures based on the bottom-up design principle, but also expands the potential applications of COF materials.

CrI3, a two-dimensional layered material, has recently attracted a lot of research interest due to its exotic magnetic property. However, the synthesis of a CrI3 monolayer (ML) by vapor-phase deposition has not been achieved by current experimental endeavors, which require a better understanding of the vapor-phase growth mechanism involved. In this study, we theoretically simulate the growth of the CrI3 ML on the Si(111) surface by using a first-principles calculation. Our key finding is that an iodine buffer layer on the Si surface is crucial to the formation of the CrI3 ML by stabilizing the precursor and also reacting with the precursor. Moreover, our simulation reveals that the CrI2 cluster as the growth building unit, which can be formed by controlling the chemical potential of the I source, is preferred for the formation of CrI3 ML. We think that our work will provide insightful guidance for the experimental synthesis of CrI3 ML in the future.

Biological muscle is considered an inspiring actuator for the researchers in the field of biorobots. The main building unit of a muscle, sarcomere, and the study of its energy cycle is analyzed to mimic the micro-level muscle components’ behavior to improve actuator performance and efficiency. A newly developed hybrid material actuator is designed using a combination of Ionic Polymeric Metallic Composites and hydrogel to behave like the sarcomere with different deflection types. The proposed module is arranged in two different configurations and performance is investigated for working at once or working in sequence. A physical model is proposed, and a mathematical model of the actuator is derived and formulated using MATLAB Simulink. The proposed arrangements show an improvement in force and displacement magnification of three times relative to the single module. PurposeThe purpose of the study is to assess performance of local level planning policies that required new buildings to avoid a specified and rising proportion of projected greenhouse gases (GHGs) from their use; it is calculated based on the approved design and plans for the specific development and through the installation and operation of low and zero-carbon generating technologies (LZCGTs).Design/methodology/approachData were extracted from a random sample of 911 new builds from 403 planning applications and related documents, across five Scottish local planning authorities (LPAs) who adopted GHG reduction policies. The data included GHG reduction, LZCGT installation and performance, use of plan designs to meet GHG reductions and exemptions from the GHG policies. Descriptive statistics using SPSS software, complimented by qualitative responses from questionnaires, helped to explain observed performance.FindingsThe policies performed poorly, at the level of delivering low-hanging fruits, with significant room for improvement. Design-led opportunities in the GHG policies were not actively pursued; most LZCGT installation was exempted from GHG policies and the policies were poor in targeting the relationship between building unit size, GHG emission and reductions.Research limitations/implicationsThe source documents, where the data came from, had varying quality and completeness and some LPAs are over-represented in the data. The study applied limited criteria to evaluate policy performance.Practical implicationsAreas for policymakers to further focus on when exploring how to enhance role and performance of LZCGT are highlighted, including practical suggestions.Originality/valueOne of the few studies assessing policy performance and distilling lessons, from early adopters of GHG policies at local level planning, offer performance benchmarks and raise points of concern for policymakers.

Small-bandgap π-conjugated polymers are an important class of materials possessing significant potential for their broad application in organic electronics. Incorporating a quinoid structure into the polymer backbone is a powerful strategy for reducing the bandgap. Although this also leads to high-lying HOMO energy levels, resulting in unstable polymers, the use of an electron-deficient quinoid building unit can bring about low-lying HOMO energy levels, thus stabilizing the polymer against oxidation. Recent efforts in molecular design and synthesis have produced a number of fascinating small-bandgap π-conjugated polymers based on quinoid structures, many of which have shown notable performance in organic electronic devices such as transistors and solar cells. This review covers the progress in small-bandgap quinoid-based π-conjugated polymers, focusing on a variety of electron-deficient quinoid building units. We highlight the properties of each quinoid building unit and the polymers along with their structural features and device performances.

A natural clinoptilolite zeolite was transformed into other zeolites of greater industrial interest, such as zeolites with GIS and LTA structures. The synthesis conditions were studied, and the interzeolitic transformation was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (FRX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results, it was possible to observe that the GIS and LTA zeolites were successfully synthesized. Furthermore, the results revealed that a synthesis time of 4 days was enough to obtain the GIS structure, and 4 h was sufficient to obtain LTA. The interzeolitic transformation can be explained by the RBU (Ring Building Unit) approach using C4 units from the HEU topology. The use of clinoptilolite in the synthesis of other zeolites is an innovative, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable process that exploits a material that exists in large quantities and is still little explored by industry.

For rooftop building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology, photovoltaic (PV) modules are typically mounted on the sunny side of a rooftop to receive a high amount of solar irradiance, whereas the opposite side of the rooftop will have free space. This study proposed a novel strategy for building-integrated PV and radiative cooling (RC) system, namely BIPV−RC system, by covering the sunny side of a rooftop with PV modules and its free side with all-day RC modules to integrate solar energy collection and RC utilization into a single building unit. A mathematical model was developed for the proposed BIPV−RC system and a case study was conducted in two tropical cities (Karachi, Pakistan and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). Results show the total electricity and cooling output of the BIPV−RC system in Riyadh is 462.1 kWh·m −2 and 1315.3 MJ·m −2 , respectively, approximately 20.7% and 94.0% higher than those in Karachi. Moreover, a comparative study between the BIPV−RC system and the common BIPV and building-integrated RC (BIRC) system was performed and results indicate that the annual total energy output of the BIPV−RC system is nearly 79.1% and 16.8% higher than that of BIPV and BIRC system, respectively.

The creation of supramolecular assemblies by assembly of structurally simple components via supramolecular interactions provides an opportunity to develop functional materials with hierarchical complexibility. Herein, we report an assembly approach to supramolecular gels based on metal-organic cages with tunable hierarchical structures and properties. A Pd12L24 cage (L is cholesteryl-functionalized 3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene) bearing 24 cholesteryl groups is used as a supramolecular building unit and molecular platform for functionalization with tunable functional behaviors. The Pd12L24 cage motifs spontaneously self-assemble into gels where orthogonal metal-organic coordination and cholesteryl-cholesteryl interactions are involved in the gelation. The Pd12L24 cage exhibits a reversible transition between solution and aggregated gel states in response to temperature. The gelation and the mechanical property are rarely regulated by deuterated solvents and tetramethylsilane. The mechanical property of the gel materials is tunable by varying the content of cholesteryl groups of Pd12L24. Functional moieties (e.g., luminescent TPE group) can be introduced on the cage, and the luminescent property changes while the structure is maintained. The Pd12L24 gel shows visible anion-responsive behaviors arising from the hierarchical structure.

The study aims to examine the factors affecting the IEQ of buildings with respect to type of building unit, gender, age, ethnicity and directions that the windows of occupants' building units are facing. The study was conducted in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) of South Africa. The descriptive (questionnaire) survey research design (quantitative method) was adopted in the study. The convenience sampling technique was used to collect data for the study. The method of data analysis includes percentages, mean scores, t-test statistic and one-way analysis of variance. The results of the study indicate that the factors investigated in the study were significantly optimum for the IEQ of buildings. However, inferential statistics show that the respondents differed on some factors of IEQ based on age, gender, ethnicity and building unit. Based on the findings, the study concludes that, the factors affecting IEQ of buildings vary according to age, gender and type of building units occupied. Hence, the factors need to be given dedicated consideration whenever design of buildings are to be done. Despite the existence of standards/assessment tools for determining the IEQ of proposed buildings, gender, age and type of units to be provided for occupants should be put into consideration when building projects are to be designed for IEQ.

Cu2S, featuring low cost, nontoxicity, and earth abundance, has been recently recognized as a high efficiency thermoelectric (TE) material. However, before reaching the maximum of the figure of merit (ZT), Cu2S undergoes three phase transformations starting at 370 K, which give rise to severe problems, such as possible decomposition and low reliability. Herein, we discover CsCu5S3 with phase transformation at 823 K, which is significantly higher than the 370 K value of Cu2S. Single crystal diffraction data reveal that its two phases are constructed by the same Cu4S4 columnar building unit via propagating either at the opposite sides into a layered o-CsCu5S3, or at the four apexes into a 3D t-CsCu5S3, respectively. Interestingly, the o-to-t transformation is quick, but the reverse one is relatively slow. The association constants for the formation of negatively charged complexes containing calcium and phosphate ions in aqueous solution have been computed, and these results suggest that the previously proposed calcium phosphate building unit, [Ca(HPO4)3]4–, should only be present in small amounts under normal experimental conditions. However, the presence of an activation barrier for the removal of an HPO42– ion from this complex indicates that this species could be kinetically trapped. Thereby, a distinct, crystalline titania layer is achieved inside every hollow sphere building unit. These hybrid carbon spherogels allow capitalizing on carbon's electrical conductivity and the lithium-ion intercalation capacity of titania.

[BMIm][Sn(AlCl4)3] (1) ([BMIm]: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMPyr][Sn(AlCl4)3] (2) ([BMPyr]: 1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium), and [BMIm][Pb(AlCl4)3] (3) are obtained by reaction of SnCl2/PbCl2 in [BMIm]Cl/[BMPyr]Cl/AlCl3-based ionic liquids. The colourless crystals of the title compounds contain infinite 1∞[M(AlCl4)3]n− chains (M: Sn, Pb) that are separated by the voluminous [BMIm]+/[BMPyr]+ cations. The central Sn2+/Pb2+ is coordinated by chlorine in the form of distorted squared anti-prismatic polyhedra. Each Cl atom, in turn, is part of an [AlCl4]− tetrahedron that interlinks Sn2+/Pb2+ to the chain-like building unit. In addition to the novel structural arrangement, all title compounds surprisingly show intense white-light emission. Although Sn2+ and Pb2+ are well-known as dopants in conventional phosphors, efficient luminescence via s–p-transitions of compounds containing Sn2+/Pb2+ in molar quantities and as regular lattice constituents is rare. The emission of [BMIm][Sn(AlCl4)3] and [BMPyr][Sn(AlCl4)3] is very efficient with quantum yields of 51 and 76%, which belong to the highest values known for s–p-based luminescence of Sn2+.

Vacant housing detection is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed. It is also a suitable example to promote utilisation of smart data that are stored in municipalities. This study proposes a vacant housing detection model that uses closed municipal data and considers accelerating the use of public data to promote smart cities. Employing a machine learning technique, this study ensures high predictive power for vacant housing detection. The model enables us to handle complex municipal data that include non-linear feature characteristics and substantial missing data. In particular, handling missing data is important in the practical use of closed municipal data because not all of the data are necessarily absorbed to a building unit. Consequently, the model in this analysis showed that the accuracy and false positive rate are 95.4 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, which are high enough to detect vacant houses. However, the true positive rate is 77.0 percent. Although the rate is not low to some extent, selection of features and further collection of extra samples may improve the rate. Geographic distribution of vacant houses further enabled us to check the difference between the actual and estimated number of vacant houses, and more than 80 percent of 500-meter grid data are with below 10 errors, which we think, provides city planners with informative data to roughly grasp geographical tendencies.

Reticular framework materials thrive on designability, but unexpected reaction outcomes are crucial in exploring new structures and functionalities. By combining "incompatible" building blocks, we employed geometric frustration in reticular materials leading to emergent structural features. The combination of a pseudo-C5-symmetrical organic building unit based on a pyrrole core with a C4-symmetrical copper paddlewheel synthon led to three distinct frameworks by tuning the synthetic conditions. The frameworks show structural features typical for geometric frustration: self-limiting assembly, internally stressed equilibrium structures, and topological defects in the equilibrium structure, which manifested in formation of a hydrogen-bonded framework, distorted and broken secondary building units, and dangling functional groups, respectively. The influence of geometric frustration on the CO2 sorption behavior and the discovery of a new secondary building unit shows geometric frustration can serve as a strategy to obtain highly complex porous frameworks.

Two new, microporous MOFs of framework composition ((CH3)2NH2)2[M3O(HHTP)(HHTP˙)], M = Al3+, Ga3+, H6HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene, are described. Electron diffraction combined with molecular simulations show that these compounds crystallize in the β-cristobalite structure, containing a new type of trinuclear inorganic building unit for MOFs and radical anions.

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials that have attracted considerable renewed interest are in great demand by the relevant industries, but there is a severe shortage of these materials. The existence of such a dilemma may be attributed to the extremely rigorous prerequisite for such materials, including a very wide energy gap (>6.2 eV), which can be met by only a few borates, phosphates, and carbonates; among them, only one, KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF), is practically usable. Herein, we theoretically identify PO3F2– as a novel DUV NLO building unit based on first-principles studies. In addition, we thoroughly survey more than 100 known monofluorophosphates and identify three of them, (NH4)2PO3F, [C(NH2)3]2PO3F, and NaNH4PO3F·H2O, as promising DUV NLO candidates. This research is articulated from the clay framework as material wealth of the region of Norte de Santander, Colombia, and seeks to structure attributes of passive thermal cooling in a ceramic piece for low cost masonry type block cooked with physical, mechanical and thermals feasible characteristics for warm tropical weather conditions of 33 °C on average. This work is based on previous studies that explores the partitions structure morphology in Blocks H10 establishing a model of 6 horizontal cavities for low thermal conductivity and having oblique geometry partitions to interrupt heat conduction by direct thermal bridge inside of the constructive unit called Form-C, which is taken as the object of analysis, adding 5% organic coffee cisco additive in the 95% clay mixture to increase the porosity with a proportion that does not affect the deterioration of the mechanical properties and allow to optimize the thermal insulation capacity regarding to a traditional product. Methodologies: in the first phase, prototypes of Block H10 with Form-A are manufactured by extrusion at the laboratory level as a comparative witness of the properties of a standard piece and Form-C as a piece with thermo-insulating strategies to execute physical-ceramic, geometric evaluations of mechanical resistance and water absorption applying the Norma Técnica Colombiana 4017 for masonry units. In the second stage, simulations of temperature distribution and heat flow are prepared by finite element method in ANSYS R16 software to determine the incidence of the variables in the mixture on heat transfer. The results obtained from thermal simulations show an energy decrease of 1.5 °C on average in relation to Form-A. In conclusion, the use of agro industrial scraps and the implementation of passive design techniques in the ceramic piece generate added value in a product that can be industrialized with improvements in technological properties from a thermal efficiency perspective in construction ceramics.

By taking advantage of a metal-containing building unit derived by a metal–organic framework—MOF-2, we found the 3-methyl-phenyl-modified Zn-mTA cluster that formed is well-defined with controlled size and structure and demonstrates extremely high solubility. Progress in recent years in metal–organic frameworks has created a rich variety of metal-containing structures that are useful for numerous applications. Substitution of the bridging ligands with monovalent ligands produces a discrete metal–organic cluster that strongly interacts with soft X-rays at a wavelength of 13 nm. Here we describe the design, preparation, computational modeling, and physical characterization of these new materials. Such metal-containing structures may form the basis of photoresists that enable the next generation of microelectronic devices.
