Abstract

Activity and physical effort positively affect a person's psychophysical state and emotional experience. Interest in the phenomenon of flow, the state of perceived arousal, stems from its relationship to an individual's intrinsic motivation. Flow is an area of research in many fields, including sports. Nowadays, solutions are being sought to support the traditional assessment of cognitive and affective states using analysis of physiological signals. Therefore, the present study analysed and estimated the physiological responses that may occur during the induction of a flow state between exercises stimulated by additional metrorhythmic stimuli. Thirty-six healthy subjects participated in the study. The effects of various metrorhythmic stimuli on the body's physiological response during the subjects' free gait were examined. The physiological response and flow intensity were evaluated when the rate of individual stimuli was changed, and the rate was enforced. Several statistically significant variables and correlations were determined for physiological indicators depending on the stage of the study conducted and the level of flow experienced. A positive, statistically significant correlation of flow and HRV frequency variables was obtained. The results also confirm previous literature reports on the relationship between flow response and frequency heart rate variability during physical activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction. The lateral abdominal wall muscles and their recruitment are the subjects of common interest for researchers due to their clinical importance and practical application in athletes and non-athletes. So far, no repeatable method aimed at activating specific muscles by passive tilting has been discovered. in this paper, changes in the morphology of muscles of the lateral abdominal wall during passive body inclinations in the sagittal plane in a standing position were assessed. The objective was to determine whether a device with the mentioned function would be able to induce reflex activation of the trunk stabilisers and can be used in an initial stage of postural rehabilitation and re-education. Methods. A total of 179 healthy subjects aged 18-30 (96 women and 83 men) participated in the study. They were divided into groups according to the body mass index and the value of the pelvic tilt in the sagittal plane. The subject's body (in a standing, habitual position in a specially developed device) was tilted in steps, every 1 angular degree, each time taking ultrasound measurements of the muscle thickness on the right side, starting from the vertical to a maximum value of 7 degrees. The crosssection of the external oblique, internal oblique, and transverse abdominal muscles was measured. Results. Each of the three muscles changed its thickness in a statistically significant way accidentally at different degrees of inclination, thus not showing a homogeneous contraction pattern. Conclusions. There are no indications for clinical application of the forward sagittal inclination in accordance with the implemented procedure in therapeutic practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: There is a need to create objective and reproducible tool for assessing the quality of infant movements. It's substantially important to detect movement disorders in infants as early as possible. The study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of kinesiological measurements of spontaneous movements performed by 51 infants (aged 6 to 15 weeks) recorded three times for two consecutive days using OSESEC computer analysis algorithms by determining numerical values of parameters, i.e., speed, acceleration, direction, and movement trajectory. Methods: The study group consisted of 51 infants. The diagnostic method of Prechtl was used for qualitative assessment. The quantitative assessment was based on the use of a OSESEC system. Numerical values for all movement parameters were determined, and the data obtained in the study were used for statistical analysis. Results: Analysis including movement parameter values on three consecutive recordings for the same infant revealed no statistically significant differences in location (p = 0.073), range (p = 0.557), shape (p = 0.289), mean acceleration (p = 0.124) and mean speed (p = 0.767). This confirms the reproducibility of measurements of the proposed parameters of the objectification of spontaneous infant movements. Conclusions: The interpretability and accuracy of the presented parameters were proved. All parameters estimation is fully automated. Abstract

Background: The absence of even one parent has short- and long-term effects on the child's current and future health. The purpose of the study was to determine whether there is a long-term relationship between the type of family in which men were raised and an individual's adult social position, well-being in adulthood and their biological condition regardless of social status in adulthood. Materials and methods: Data for 4528 males, aged 25-80 years, were selected from the archives of the Lower Silesian Medical Centre in Wroclaw, Poland. A total of 329 men declared that they grew up in incomplete families. Height, weight, % fat, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, blood parameters, and health of men who grew up in complete or incomplete families were compared. Results: Growing up in an incomplete family reduced chances for better education, decreased life satisfaction in adulthood, and negatively affected the final height. After taking into account the education achieved, the effect persisted only for diastolic blood pressure, creatinine, and serum phosphorus levels. Conclusions: Growing up in an incomplete family has a significant impact on male's socioeconomic position (SES), life satisfaction, and final height. A poorer quality of diet is proposed as an early life risk factor for adult health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
