Abstract

The experimental pushover test performed on the Castel di Lama building is studied by means of a finite element procedure based on the equivalent frame model with the aim to test the ability of this widespread model to reproduce the experimental results and the collapse mechanisms. Pier and spandrel macroelements are modelled as Timoshenko beams with plastic hinges to take into account shear and bending failures. Assuming the nodes as infinitely rigid and resistant, it is possible to model them by introducing properly sized offsets at the ends of pier and spandrel macroelements. A force-based formulation is adopted for the macroelement, taking advantage of its higher performances in terms of accuracy and efficiency with respect to the classical displacement-based method, and the capability of naturally avoiding shear-locking problems. The response of the building walls, either unreinforced or reinforced, is analysed in terms of resisting forces, story displacements and damage patterns, and compared with the experimental results.

Abstract

The great diffusion of masonry arch bridges, sometimes of historical interest, requires the development of simple but effective methodologies for a preliminary but reliable evaluation of their static and seismic capacity. In this paper, the behaviour under longitudinal seismic actions is analysed by using the mechanism method. The masonry is supposed to have no tension strength but a rigid–perfect plastic behaviour with finite strength in compression. The arch is subject to permanent loads and to a horizontal acceleration acting in the longitudinal direction, which causes a horizontal inertial loading acting on the arch. Three hypotheses about the effects of the inertial actions of the backfill are considered, which correspond to three different real behaviours. A comprehensive numerical investigation is performed, which allows us to point out the influence of the geometrical and mechanical parameters on the seismic capacity of a masonry arch bridge. The results are given by means of diagrams that can be easily used for a preliminary seismic check of a masonry arch bridge.

Abstract

Palazzo Torlonia in Avezzano (Italy) is a two-story confined masonry building, constructed according to the code issued after the devastating 1915 earthquake. That code provided concrete confining members around masonry walls and openings. Walls are made of clay bricks with gothic texture, whereas floor slabs are based on mixed concrete and hollow clay blocks. This paper reports the analysis and results of the experimental dynamic tests on the structure, did in year 2016, by means of 24 seismometers, placed at all floors on the structure in three different configurations. Ambient vibration was the excitation source. Data were analyzed in time and frequency. In the first case the planar bidirectional motion of some points on the building were observed for a long time, to obtain initial information regarding the prevalent directions of motion. Analysis in frequency was preliminarily pursued by means of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) and subsequently by the evaluation of the auto and cross Power Spectral Densities (PSDs). They show an energy content in the range 3-20 Hz, with many close peaks. Although the results presented in this paper are not conclusive and data will be investigated in more detail, in general they show the deformability of the floors, which cannot be considered as infinitely rigid in their plane, as is often done in structural analysis of buildings. © 2017 International Conference on Advances in Experimental Structural Engineerin. Abstract

The Marcus Aurelius Column has been a historical seismometer in Rome since its construction. Most of the seismic events of the past had effects on it. Therefore, the preservation of this monument is of fundamental importance for at least two reasons. First of all, to extend as much as possible its life time, in order to allow enjoying the sight to future generations. Then, the knowledge of these column characteristics will allow to improve the interpretation of historical documents on seismic event in Rome and to continue using it as historical seismometer in the Eternal City. In this paper, the last experimental vibrational analysis carried out on the Column is shown. Twenty-four velocimeter sensors, connected to a single acquisition unit, were used. Abstract

With the objective of characterizing the dynamic behavior of the Aureliana Column in Rome and evaluating its health status, an ambient vibration survey of the monument was carried out by using nine Kinemetrics seismometers SS-1 connected to one Kinemetrics K2 recorder. Data were analyzed both in time and frequency domain. The analysis showed that the motion was governed by two quite close translational frequencies, equal to 1.24 and 1.3 Hz respectively, and also by a third translational frequency, equal to 6.5 Hz. A rotational frequency, equal to 9.0 Hz was also observed. The analysis of the curves described by the measurement point at the top of the tower gave interesting information about the characteristics of the column vibrations, which does not behave as a whole.

Abstract

Palazzo Marchesale in San Giuliano di Puglia (Italy) is an old masonry structure hosting the new City Hall. It is quite complex and is characterized by several parts with different height and foundation levels, and includes an internal court. After the earthquake of October 31st (ML =5.4) and November 1st, 2002, (ML =5.3), the building was retrofitted and seismic joints were realized between the different buildings, in order to regularize the dynamic behaviour. The structure has been considered for seismic monitoring in the framework of a research project funded by the Office for the reconstruction of San Giuliano di Puglia. Therefore a permanent accelerometric array has been designed and installed. It was tested by deploying also a temporary array in different configurations and recording ambient vibrations and weak motion effects. The experimental results were compared with those obtained by means of a finite element model. Thus, linear and nonlinear analysis allowed to evaluate the seismic safety of the structure. Modal identification and model updating are shown in the paper. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.
