2. Tannins and copper sulphate as antimicrobial agents to prevent contamination of Posidonia oceanica seedling culture for restoration purposes.

Abstract

Seed-based restoration methods are increasingly recognized as a relevant tool contributing to halt and reverse the loss of seagrass meadows while providing genetic and evolutionary benefit for the conservation of these habitats. Ad-hoc protocols aimed at maximizing the survival of plantlets obtained from seeds in cultivation systems are therefore required. Previous trials of seedling culture of Posidonia oceanica , the dominant seagrass of the Mediterranean Sea, recorded up to 40% loss due to mould development. In this study we aim to (i) identify the putative causal agents of seed decay and (ii) test the efficacy of copper sulphate (0.2 and 2 ppm) and of tannin-based products derived from chestnut, tara and quebracho in reducing seed and seedling decay, while assessing possible phytotoxic effects on plant development. Halophytophthora lusitanica, H. thermoambigua and a putative new Halophytophtora species were identified as possible causal agents of seed loss. The antimicrobial agents (copper and tannins) reduced seed contamination by 20%, although copper sulphate at 2 ppm strongly inhibited the root growth. Among tannins, chestnut and tara reduced seeds germination by up to 75% and decreased shoot and root development, while quebracho showed a less severe phytotoxic effect. The use of copper sulphate at 0.2 ppm is therefore recommended to prevent P. oceanica seedling loss in culture facilities since it reduces seed contamination with no phytotoxic effects. Our results contribute to improving the seedling culture of one the key species of the Mediterranean Sea, increasing propagule availability for restoration purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, an economic analysis of the effect of pingers as "anti-depredation" devices on artisanal fisheries and dolphin depredation was performed. By comparing the data of the gross Profit Per Unit Effort (PPUE) over 29 fishing days for two identical nets (900-m long, one was equipped with pingers, and the other did not have pingers), was assessed the following: the different production trends of the nets (Advantage of Production, AP) and the Return Of Investment (ROI) for the purchase of the pingers. Considering the difference in the PPUE values of the two nets, the frequency of the dolphin interaction, and the effort of fishing activities, was assessed the one-year economic losses (ED) due to dolphin depredation. Moreover, was assessed the economic damage caused by the destroyed area of the nets. The AP over 29 fishing days for the use of the pinger net with respect to the control net is 25.7 Euros for each 50 m of net. The ROI for the initial investment of the pingers (4 pinger = 800 Euro) is 50 fishing days, and the ED is 1400 Euros. The damages suffered by the control and the pinger nets were 33 m2 (90 Euros) and 22 m2 (91 Euros), respectively. The analysis of the results demonstrates that the critical factors that determine the success of the pinger technology could be represented by the return of investment (ROI) and the use of the economic incentives provided by the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).

Abstract

Nell'ambito del Piano "Indagine preliminare sullo stato di contaminazione organica ed inorganica di sedimenti marini nell'area prospiciente la condotta di scarico delle acque del depuratore di Acqua dei Corsari", il comune di Palermo ha affidato all'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero (IAMC) del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) di Capo Granitola, il campionamento e le analisi dei sedimenti, delle acque, della comunità mesobentonica e dei foraminiferi dello specchio di mare della zona sopracitata. I risultati delle suddette analisi consentiranno di valutare lo stato ecologico, chimico e fisico di tale ambiente marino-costiero in riferimento alle normative Italiane attualmente in vigore. Il presente rapporto tecnico descrive tutte le fasi di lavoro svolte: 1. Scelta del transetto dei siti di campionamento e analisi dello stato dell'arte sulla zona da investigare; 2. prelievo di 6 campioni di acque superficiali; 3. prelievo di 4 carote di sedimento marino per ciascuna delle 6 stazioni di campionamento (totale 24 carote) mediante carotiere manuale; 4. estrusione e stoccaggio dei campioni in contenitori di vetro e/o polietilene ad alta densità e conservazione dei suddetti; 5. acquisizione di documentazione fotografica dei campioni e descrizione macroscopica del sedimento prelevato; 6. colorazione della componente biologica vivente all'interno del sedimento tramite soluzione di Rosa Bengala; 7. analisi chimico-fisica e biologica dei campioni prelevati; 8. creazione di una relazione a carattere scientifico finale sui risultati ottenuti.

Abstract

International audience; The physiological responses of fish to underwater noise are poorly understood and further information is needed to evaluate any possible negative effects of sound exposure. We exposed European sea bass and gilthead sea bream to a 0.1-1 kHz linear sweep (150 dB re1μPa). This band frequency is perceptible by many species of fish and is mainly produced by vessel traffic. We assessed the noise-induced motility reaction (analysing the movements) and the haematological responses (measuring blood glucose and lactate, and haematocrit levels). The noise exposure produced a significant increase in motility as well as an increase in lactate and haematocrit levels in sea bream and sea bass. A significant decrease of glucose was only observed in sea bream. A linear correlation between blood parameters and motility in fish exposed to the noise was observed. The acoustic stimulus produced intense muscle activity.

Abstract

This study describes pulsed signals from bottlenose dolphins of the central Mediterranean Sea. Data were collected during 2011 and 2012 in 27 surveys in the Sicilian Channel, during which 163 animals were sighted. Based mainly on the pulse repetition rate, the signals were classified as Low-frequency click (LF; single clicks without a regular pulse rate), Train click (TC; with a interclick interval of 80 ± 2 ms), Burst (with a interclick interval of 3.4 ± 0.2 ms), or Packed click (with a lower number of clicks per train and median interclick interval of 3.2 ± 0.0 ms). The measured parameters were peak sound pressure level (SPLpk); signal duration; the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd peak of frequency; number of peaks frequency; bandwidth; centroid frequency; and the 10th, 25th, 75th, and 90th percentiles of the power spectrum distribution. Most of the parameters were significantly different among the groups, reflecting the different functions of these signals. LF clicks showed a lower peak frequency and percentiles and a longer duration and could be used to explore a wide area without a specific target focalization and with less resolution. The TC showed a higher SPLpk, higher peak frequency, lower duration, and lower number of secondary peaks frequency, showing a better resolution to investigate a specific target. Abstract

Abstract: Analyses of fatty acids from the dorsal muscle of Acipenser naccarii × A. baerii sturgeon hybrid were carried out. The data were compared with those reported in the literature for other sturgeons reared for human consumption. This hybrid would seem to be of great nutritional interest, its flesh being more beneficial for human health than those of other cultured sturgeons. In fact, the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was very high (34.7±0.67%), being similar to that of monounsaturated fatty acids (37.9±0.83%). Moreover, the PUFAs-n3/PUFAs-n6 ratio (6.74) was noticeably higher in this hybrid than in the other cultured sturgeon species. There were also high contents of EPA (C20:5n3) and DHA (C22:6n3), the two most important essential fatty acids for human health. The linolenic acid (C18:3n3) is the metabolic precursor of the PUFAs-n3, and it is important also in human metabolism. In A. naccarii × A. baerii hybrid we found higher C18:3n3 values than in other sturgeon species cultured for commercial purposes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
