Abstract

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has shown exponential growth in recent years, with expectations for further development in the years to come. With such significant expansion, efforts and incentives are shifting from EV sales to projects aimed at expanding charging station infrastructure. In order to sustain this growing trend, a reliable and robust charging infrastructure is needed. However, the entire process of planning, designing, and constructing fixed charging stations (FCSs) is time-consuming and expensive. In this scenario, mobile charging stations (MCSs) offer a complementary solution to ensure the necessary reliability for the improvement of EV owners' experiences in the electrified transportation sector, as they help reduce range anxiety, peak-hour costs, and waiting times. In this sense, this paper aims to disseminate the state-of-the-art research and studies on MCSs, covering topics such as architectures, standards, converter topologies, and market solutions. Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in using model-free deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based controllers as an alternative approach to improve the dynamic behavior, efficiency, and other aspects of DC–DC power electronic converters, which are traditionally controlled based on small signal models. These conventional controllers often fail to self-adapt to various uncertainties and disturbances. This paper presents a design methodology using proximal policy optimization (PPO), a widely recognized and efficient DRL algorithm, to make near-optimal decisions for real buck converters operating in both continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) while handling resistive and inductive loads. Challenges associated with delays in real-time systems are identified. Key innovations include a chattering-reduction reward function, engineering of input features, and optimization of neural network architecture, which improve voltage regulation, ensure smoother operation, and optimize the computational cost of the neural network. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the controller in real scenarios. The findings are believed to make significant contributions to the application of DRL controllers in real-time scenarios, providing guidelines and a starting point for designing controllers using the same method in this or other power electronic converter topologies. Abstract

The prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, particularly carbapenem-resistant strains, has become a significant global health concern. Ceftazidime–avibactam (CZA) has emerged as a promising treatment option. However, data on its efficacy and safety in children are scarce, necessitating further investigation. We conducted a descriptive case series at a tertiary hospital in Spain from February 2019 to January 2022. Pediatric patients (<16 years) treated with CZA for confirmed or suspected multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections were included. The clinical and microbiological characteristics, treatment approaches, and outcomes were examined. Eighteen children received CZA treatment. All had complex chronic conditions, with the most frequent underlying main diseases being liver transplantation (n = 8) and biliary atresia (n = 4). The predominant type of infection for which they received CZA was intra-abdominal infection caused or suspected to be caused by OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. CZA was generally well tolerated. Within the first month of starting CZA therapy, two patients died, with one case directly linked to the infection's fatal outcome. Some patients needed repeated courses of therapy due to recurrent infections, yet no resistance development was noted. In summary, the use of CZA showed effectiveness and safety, while the lack of resistance development highlights CZA's potential as a primary treatment option against OXA-48-producing infections. Abstract

Continual advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) are revolutionizing virtual education and bringing new tools on the market that provide virtual solutions to a range of problems. Nevertheless, nonvirtual experimentation using computer-aided control system design tools is still fundamental for future engineers. This paper describes a control course laboratory element, which is designed to teach electronic control engineering, in which students use a networked control system to steer and drive an electric car prototype. Multidisciplinary in nature, this laboratory allows students to take advantage of their previous academic training, as they model the plant from an open-loop test and contrast the simulated behavior with experimental results obtained on the prototype. A goal in this work was that students, across multiple engineering disciplines, should be able to integrate the knowledge acquired throughout their degree studies. An evaluation of students' grades, and their perception of the course, was conducted; this confirmed the educational benefits of the approach.

Abstract

This work studies the DC-DC conversion stage in solid-state transformers (SST). The traditional two- or three-level dual active bridge (DAB) topology faces limitations in microgrid interconnection due to power and voltage limitations. For this reason, the use of multilevel topologies such as active neutral point clamped (ANPC) is a promising alternative. Additionally, the efficiency of the SSTs is a recurring concern, and reducing losses in the DC-DC stage is a subject to be studied. In this context, this work presents a new control technique based on an adaptive model- based predictive control (AMPC) to select the modulation technique of an ANPC-DAB DC-DC converter aimed at reducing losses and increasing efficiency. The single-phase shift (SPS), triangular, and trapezoidal modulation techniques are used according to the converter output power with the aim of maximizing the number of soft-switching points per cycle. The performance of the proposed control technique is demonstrated through real-time simulation and a reduced-scale experimental setup. The findings indicate the effectiveness of the AMPC control technique in mitigating voltage source perturbations. This technique has low output impedance and is robust to converter parameter variations. Prototyping tests revealed that, in steady-state, the AMPC significantly improves converter efficiency without compromising dynamic performance. Despite its advantages, the computational cost of AMPC is not significantly higher than that of traditional model predictive control (MPC), allowing for the allocation of time to other applications. 47. On-Line Monitoring of Maximum Temperature and Loss Distribution of a Medium Frequency Transformer Using Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract

Losses and maximum temperature are important indicators of the health status of the medium-frequency magnetic components. Both the losses and the maximum temperature are very difficult to obtain/estimate due to the high complexity, change of losses in the core with respect to the average temperature, or the variation of the losses of the windings derived from the construction of the litz wire and the high-frequency effects. This article proposes the use of a real-time estimator, based on artificial neural networks trained from finite element method simulations capable of predicting with an error less than 2% in all cases both the maximum internal temperatures and the losses of a medium frequency transformer, with forced convection, which implies a very complex thermal behavior.
