Citizenship acquisition is viewed as the key indicator of political incorporation into US society and one motivated by the desire to formally engage in the civic realm, but we know naturalization is undertaken for many reasons. What we know less about is what motivates particular groups. Through surveying 74 lower socio-economic immigrants of color initiating the naturalization process at free citizenship clinics in the Boston, Massachusetts area in the northeastern United States in fall 2019, we examine the stated motivations to naturalize. The survey data reveal that the desire to engage politically is the most commonly cited primary motivation to naturalize (44%), followed by a desire to feel safer in the US (29%). When looking at primary and secondary motivations, 66% cite the ability to vote, and 59% cite the desire to feel safer. The combined motivations of security and political engagement suggest a “threat-opportunity” model of citizenship acquisition, whereby immigrants assess the external socio-political threats and seek to neutralize them through both naturalizing and then engaging politically to change the environment. At the same time, statistically significant relationships between motivations and ethno-racial group and country of origin suggest additional factors must be examined.

Discoloring of glass due to ionizing radiation depends on the absorbed dose. The radiation-induced light attenuation in optical fibers may be used as a measure of the dose. In high-energy photon beams (6 MV X rays), a lead-doped silica fiber can be calibrated. A dosimeter based on an optical fiber was developed for applications in radiation therapy. The diameter of the mounted fiber is 0.25 mm, whereas the length depends on the sensitivity required. To demonstrate the applicability, a customized fiber device was used to determine scattered radiation close to the lens of the eye. Measurements were compared with TLDs (LiF) in an anthropomorphic phantom. The comparison with TLD measurements shows good agreement. In contrast to TLD, optical fibers provide immediate dose values, and the readout procedure is much easier. Owing to its small size and diameter, interesting invasive dose measurements are feasible. A protein obtained from the mouse submaxillary gland, which enhances the growth of sympathetic and spinal ganglia and their processes, is 4-30 times more concentrated in the male than in the female sub-maxillary gland, an organ which shows a sexual dimorphism in histological appearance and in several physiological differences. The masculinization of the gland which occurs during pregnancy and lactation, as a result of increased androgen secretion during that time, has been shown to be correlated to a logarithmic increase in concentration of nerve growth protein, to the point where it may equal that of the male. It is suggested that this increase may serve the function of aiding the development of parts of the nervous system of the suckling mouse.

The paper electrophoretic pattern of human serum has a general resemblance to other mammalian species in number of components and their electrophoretic properties. Globulin and albumin fractions of avian species (domestic fowl, cormorant) resemble in mobility those of the human. Serum components of lower vertebrates differed in their electrophoretic properties from those of the human and thus are not comparable. The serum pattern from an anthropod, H. americanus, was completely different from the patterns obtained from vertebrates.

Nerve growth factor has been isolated from submaxillary glands of mature male mice at specific activities about a million times, and in yields of biological activity ten million times, greater than best previous results. The major improvement in the isolation is related to the separation of a highly active tosylarginine methyl esterase present in cruder preparations. The new nerve growth factor may be an entity different from the older one, although no gross differences in the qualitative aspects of their actions are apparent on superficial examination of chick ganglia influenced by them. The neurites which develop from a ganglion in the presence of nerve growth factor are of nearly equal length. The amount of nerve growth factor determines the number of neurites but not the extent of individual development. The amount of the new nerve growth factor which evokes the appearance of a hundred neurites from a single ganglion appears to be about ten molecules. Since each neurite seems to arise from a different neuron each molecule of nerve growth factor must affect several cells. This result can be rationalized by a catalytic mechanism or by indirect action of nerve growth factor through a hypothetical cell which produces a neurite evocator on contact with the molecule of nerve growth factor.

1. Large doses of acetylcholine (1.20-2.85 mg) were injected in the yolk sac, air chamber, or directly on the embryo during the 4-12-day incubation period. These doses were well tolerated by the embryo and attended with no gross abnormalities. Atropine similarly administered produced no malformation. 2. The yolk sac of 4-day embryos was injected with weak doses (0.05 mg) of physostigmine salicylate. Shortened beaks, micromelia, and retarded development of eyelids were observed at 8 to 13 days' incubation. Inasmuch as similar anomalies were reported in sulfanilamide and insulin treated animals, these anomalies cannot be considered eserine specific. 3. With larger doses (1-15 mg) of prostigmine bromide or physostigmine salicylate, the above mentioned anomalies were generally associated with severe midline bendings of the vertebral column (Figs. 4,5), and this was interpreted as specific for cholinesterase inhibition.

PurposeAs our previously reported basic investigations indicated, optical loss in silica induced by ionizing radiation may be used for dosimetrical purposes. We tested a novel optical fiber radiation sensor in clinical settings.

On May 23, 1929 a species of Phenacoccuswas found in ant's nests of the genus Lasius. Some of these were feeding on the roots of grass and were well guarded by the ants. Mature males were also found in the nest. After going carefully through the literature I find that it agrees well with the description of P. wilmattaeCkll. However, since a number of very obvious characters were omitted in the original description it will be profitable to mention them, and emphasize the outstanding differences between this species and P. stachyosEhrhorn.

Cohen's method for preparing the nerve growth factor from mouse submaxillary glands was followed to the last ammonium sulfate fraction. Further purification was accomplished with carboxymethyl- and diethylaminoethyl- column chromatography. Three peaks were obtained for each column; the third peak obtained with diethylaminoethyl cellulose was the most active. Electrophoresis of this active fraction produced one anodal and two cathodal bands. Each band was inactive for nerve outgrowth. However combinations of the cathodal bands produced 3+ growth. One cathodal band was not dialyzable; the other was dialyzable and negative for ultraviolet absorption at 280 millimicrons.
