Parks near urban areas provide important opportunities for locals to connect with nature and enjoy outdoor leisure. Climate change planning needs in these parks are pronounced, especially given the large local populations they serve. Ecosystem services, particularly cultural ecosystem services, can frame people’s perceived benefits from these park systems and the larger region. Place attachment on park system and regional scales can differentiate the extent of perceived benefits by the strength of park and regional connection. Together, these can highlight priorities for climate action and communication. The Huron-Clinton Metroparks in densely populated southeast Michigan (US) exemplify an important urban-proximate park system grappling with climate change effects within the parks and across the region. We assisted the Metroparks in creating their Climate Action Plan, including surveying regional residents’ and Metroparks recreationists’ (n = 4069). Here, we examine associations between respondents’ prioritized ecosystem services and levels of place attachment to southeast Michigan and the Metroparks. Results show that on both geographic scales of the park system and region, the three most valued cultural ecosystem services were leisure time spent outdoors, appreciation of beauty, and physical/mental health benefits. However, place attachment level (ambivalent, moderate, or strong) on both scales surfaced ecosystem services prioritization differences and a potentially enhanced role of cultural ecosystem services related to relationships—cultural heritage, social capital, and spirituality—within the Metroparks and with the strong place attached. We discuss these patterns and their connections to the park system and regional climate action planning and communication.

IntroductionNijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS) is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by microcephaly, immunodeficiency, and impaired DNA repair. NBS is most prevalent among Slavic populations, including Ukraine. Our study aimed to comprehensively assess the prevalence, diagnosis, clinical data, immunological parameters, and treatment of NBS patients in Ukraine.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review that included 84 NBS patients from different regions of Ukraine who were diagnosed in 1999-2023. Data from the Ukrainian Registry of NBS and information from treating physicians, obtained using a developed questionnaire, were utilized for analysis.ResultsAmong 84 NBS patients, 55 (65.5%) were alive, 25 (29.8%) deceased, and 4 were lost to follow-up. The median age of patients was 11 years, ranging from 1 to 34 years. Most patients originate from western regions of Ukraine (57.8%), although in recent years, there has been an increase in diagnoses from central and southeastern regions, expanding our knowledge of NBS prevalence. The number of diagnosed patients per year averaged 3.4 and increased from 2.7 to 4.8 in recent years. The median age of NBS diagnosis was 4.0 years (range 0.1-16) in 1999-2007 and decreased to 2.7 in the past 6 years. Delayed physical development was observed in the majority of children up to the age of ten years. All children experienced infections, and 41.3% of them had recurrent infections. Severe infections were the cause of death in 12%. The second most common clinical manifestation of NBS was malignancies (37.5%), with the prevalence of lymphomas (63.3%). Malignancies have been the most common cause of death in NBS patients (72% of cases). Decreased levels of CD4+ and CD19+ were observed in 89.6%, followed by a reduction of CD3+ (81.8%) and CD8+ (62.5%). The level of NK cells was elevated at 62.5%. IgG concentration was decreased in 72.9%, and IgA - in 56.3%. Immunoglobulin replacement therapy was administered to 58.7% of patients. Regular immunoglobulin replacement therapy has helped reduce the frequency and severity of severe respiratory tract infections.ConclusionImprovements in diagnosis, including prenatal screening, newborn screening, monitoring, and expanding treatment options, will lead to better outcomes for NBS patients.

Background. The search for optimal methods of selective and integral determination of various cytotoxic compounds in biological fluids and tissues, which would have high sensitivity and allow for quick and reliable assessment and detection of potentially cytotoxic components of substances with biologically active action, remains relevant today. It is known that chemotherapeutic agents can be released into the environment (air, surface water, sediments and soil) and cause adverse consequences (impact on the stability of ecosystems due to reduced viability of species). The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of thiazole derivative N-(5-benzyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)-3,5-dimethyl1-benzofuran-2-carboxamide (BF1) conjugated with PEG-based polymeric nanoparticles (PEG-PN – Th1) on genotoxicity and acute toxicity in allium bioassay. Materials and Methods. Allium cepa ana-telophase assay was applied to monitor genotoxicity of the studied compounds. The acute toxic effects such as inhibition of cell division, seed germination and growth of Allium roots were estimated. A. cepa seeds (15 per each point) were germinated on the studied solutions of BF1, Th1 and Th2 (10 μM) for 5 days at 22 °C. The root growth and the percentage of inhibition of seed germination were calculated. In order to establish cyto- and genotoxicity of the studied compounds, we have determined the mitotic index and the relative amount of chromosomal aberrations. Results. BF1 had a significant inhibitory effect on root growth and seed germination at a concentration of 10 μM. The effect was eliminated when it was influenced by BF1 complex with a polymeric carrier. The free polymer does not have a negative effect on the studied parameters either. A significant decrease in the mitotic index and increase in the percentage of chromosomal aberrations was observed under the action of BF1 at a concentration of 10 µM. There was no significant change in the value of mitoitic index and percentage of chromosomal aberrations under the action of Th2 comp­lex or polymeric carrier Th1. Conclusions. The thiazole derivative in complex with a polymeric carrier at a concentration of 10 µM did not show acute toxicity in Allium cepa bioassay. Polymer carrier based on polyethylene glycol neutralized the negative effect of BF1 on the mitotic and phase indices of Allium root meristem cells; it also decreased the percentage of chromosomal aberrations.

Transportation of firewood can be a vector for invasive insect spread resulting in damage to surrounding areas. In 2016 and 2021, surveys were conducted at campgrounds around Michigan to understand where campers were sourcing their firewood, awareness of the ‘Do not move firewood’ campaign, knowledge of invasive insects and pests, reactions to a potential ban on bringing firewood to campgrounds, and perspective on kiln-dried firewood – all potential policy levers to reduce the spread of invasive insects. Results indicated that campaign awareness slightly decreased between the survey years, personal firewood transport has decreased, and knowledge of invasives remains low. There is an opportunity for intensifying invasive species and firewood outreach efforts, however, regulation (and enforcement) may be more effective among those who would not comply or support a ban.

In this study, we examine principals' data use within four districts are engaged in district-level professional learning around equity. Drawing on Gutierrez's framework for dimensions of equity, we consider how principals engage in data use in light of the dimensions of access, achievement, identity, and power. Findings suggest each district had its own definition of equity and engaged in work at advancing equity based on this unique definition. We conclude with implications for policy, preparation, and practice related to these different understandings of equity.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the Motherhood Constellation in two young mothers (19 and 22 years old), with and without depressive symptoms. Through qualitative content analysis of the interviews, information was categorized according to four themes of this construct: life-growth, primary relating, support matrix, and identity reorganization. There were no differences between mothers in the first theme. In the others, despite the similarities with the asymptomatic mother, the young woman with depressive symptoms had difficulty to get involved with her baby, restricted social support, and an impasse related to the organization of her maternal identity and internal reorganization in the face of developmental demands. These findings indicate the need for attention to the mental health of young mothers during the complex process of becoming a mother.

The petrochronological records of eclogites in the Scandinavian Caledonides are investigated using EPMA and LA-ICPMS of zircon and apatite for U-Pb geochronology, combined with major and trace element characteristics. Metamorphic zircon from two eclogites from the Lofoten-Vesterålen Complex (Lofoten Archipelago region) collectively yielded a Concordia age 427.8 ± 5.7 Ma and an upper intercept U-Pb age 425 ± 30 Ma. Apatites from the same eclogites provided U-Pb lower intercepts at 322 ± 28 Ma and 354 ± 33 Ma, with the latter also yielding a younger age of 227 ± 24 Ma. Two eclogites from the Lower Seve Nappe (Northern Jämtland) demonstrate different zircon and apatite age records. Metamorphic zircon provided Concordia ages of 467.2 ± 5.9 Ma and 444.5 ± 5.5 Ma, which resolve the age of prograde metamorphism and zircon growth during retrogression, respectively. The lower intercept U-Pb ages of apatites from the same eclogites are 436 ± 18 and 415 ± 25 Ma, respectively. In combination with their geochemical characteristics, they suggest two separate stages of exhumation of eclogite bodies in the Lower Seve Nappe. Zircons from an eclogite from the Blåhø Nappe (Nordøyane Archipelago) yielded a continuum of concordant U-Pb dates from ca. 435 to 395 Ma, which suggests several cycles of HT metamorphism within short intervals. Distinctive trace element characteristics of apatites from the Blåhø Nappe eclogite suggest formation coeval with zircon and garnet during HT metamorphism, but Pb diffusion behaved as an open system until cooling during exhumation of the nappe at 390 ± 12 Ma (lower intercept U-Pb age of apatite). This paper presents a study of six physical transmission line transformers (TLTs) designed to provide wideband output matching for laterally diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) transistors within a push-pull amplifier operating in the 1.8-30 MHz spectrum with an output power of 600W. While the mathematical model of TLTs is well described in the literature, the impact of physical construction methods on impedance matching and real amplifier performance is more challenging to ascertain. This paper compares six different TLTs built on various ferrite cores and employing different implementations of transmission lines. Return loss below -14 dB was achieved from 1.65 to 37.4 MHz, with most of the tested transformers exhibiting return loss better than -10 dB up to 50 MHz. The study also presents the impact of transmission line implementation on impedance matching using both special-purpose low impedance coaxial cable and a combination of general-purpose coaxial cables connected in parallel. Comparison of three chosen transformers in a real RF amplifier shows that using parallel transmission lines can lead to a return loss comparable to that of a specialpurpose coaxial cable, although at the cost of lower efficiency and output power. Biochemical monitoring of the adaptation of young water polo players to physical activity specific to this kind of sport is of immense importance. The content and objectives of biochemical monitoring are enhanced due to the fact that this cohort (from 10 to 15 years) undergoes complex phases of puberty. Exercise regulation should be strictly dosed according to the adaptive capabilities of young athletes. The sport training has a positive influence only in the absence of stress response of the body of adolescent athletes. At the same time, physical activity should promote the development of physical qualities. According to the theory about the sensitive periods of development of physical qualities, it is known that such qualities as flexibility and speed types are inherent to people of a younger age who play sports, but their improvement at the level of the highest manifestation of sportsmanship will be uniformly prolonged in time. This article proposes a scheme of biochemical monitoring of a standard training of young water polo players. Based on the results of performed analysis we have come to the conclusion that the training regimen promotes the development of anaerobic characteristics. Comparative analysis of biochemical monitoring of different age groups indicates the peculiarities of their energy supply while overcoming the same physical load, which is the PWC-170 Cycle Test. In particular, the younger the organism, the greater is the share of the anaerobic component of energy supply. This means that during the monitoring of younger groups of water polo players, special attention should be paid to the indicator of changes in lactic acid, which is a criterion that characterizes adequate changes in anaerobic metabolism, namely in glycolysis. Regarding the older age groups of athletes, urea acquires special importance in biochemical monitoring. It is known to be a biomarker of protein energy metabolism, which is precisely the last critical component of aerobic energy transformations. Dissimilation of proteins increases its contribution to aerobic energy exchange under the conditions of overcoming physical loads of a critical level. As a result of the conducted scientific experiment, as well as according to the results of one-way analysis of variance (One Way ANOVA), we recorded the fact of a significant influence of the age of the athlete on the indicators of energy exchange, which can be used in biochemical monitoring of the state of development of energy systems during the long-term training of young water polo players. We report a 31 year old female with urologic history significant for right ureteropelvic junction obstruction managed with open right pyeloplasty in 1996 with recurrent stricture managed with right ureterocalycostomy in 1997 along with right distal ureteroneocystostomy for iatrogenic distal ureteral stricture. She developed symptomatic stone episodes and recurrent urinary tract infections and elected to proceed with shockwave lithotripsy. Postoperatively she developed a large liver hemorrhage requiring supportive care and endovascular embolization.
