Macro and microstructural damage was studied in typical glass fibre-reinforced polymer laminates with two types of coating systems – (a) isophtalic gel coat: pure or mixed with SiO2 nanoparticles 5 wt% (5%N) or 10 wt% (10%N) and (b) a two-layer coating system: urethane-modified vinyl ester-based gel coat and additional polyester barrier coat layer. Accelerated tests were performed at 50℃ for 50 days for specimens with nanoparticle-modified gel and for the specimens with or without a barrier coat. Long-term ageing behaviour at 23℃ was assessed for the two-layer systems. Nanoparticle-reinforced specimens (10%) showed some advantage over ‘barrier coat systems' in terms of blister incubation time (16 and 13 days, respectively), while for 5% and 0% nanoparticles, blister incubation times were 3 and 7 days, respectively. Round and/or acicular blisters were observed on the examined surfaces. The varying size, shape and distribution of blisters was illustrated by macro and micrographs showing various failure modes associated with surface blisters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dynamic mechanic (DMA) tests were performed to compare the mechanical behaviour of glass fibre reinforced epoxy laminate composites with SiO2 nanoparticle reinforced matrix. The selection of the most promising nanoparticle concentrations was considered in terms of elastic modulus and glass transition temperature. The reference specimens (0% nanoparticles) did not contain diluent accordingly the results do not allow the exact comparison with unreinforced composite, nevertheless the ranking of the nanocomposites was made. In terms of stiffness requirements 20% nanoparticles composites offer the best behaviour, 25% higher elastic modulus than 5% nanoparticles. For nano composites the glass transition temperature TG is the highest: 80°C, 77°C for 3%, 5% nanoparticles respectively and the lowest 75°C, 72°C , 71°C for 15%, 10% and 20% nanoparticles is respectively . Low velocity impact behaviour of nano-SiO 2 enhanced carbon fibre/epoxy composites for naval applications is reported. Epoxy resin matrix was enhanced by 1- 8 wt% SiO 2 nanoparticles, based on industrial surface-modified nanosilica. Impact parameters: force, deformation, energy, damage size were recorded. The most pronounced effect was damage size decrease; e.g. ∼28% recorded by infrared thermography and X-ray computed radiography for 8% nano-SiO 2 content. Crack branching and crack deflection, due to the nanoparticles, were observed. Decreases in permanent deformation, by ∼15%, and absorbed energy, by ∼8%, were observed, as well as improved fibre/matrix interfacial strength. Flexural strength peaked at 2–5% at ∼640 MPa and then decreased, probably due to nanoparticle agglomerations. There was very little effect of small nanoparticle contents on impact force, deformation and energy, with only a 6% increase of the peak impact force for 8% nano-SiO 2 content. Water pollution exerts a negative impact on the health of both women and men, inducing hormonal changes, accelerating aging, and consequently leading to the premature onset of age-related health problems. Water pollutants can in general be classified as chemical (both organic and inorganic), physical, and biological agents. Certain chemical pollutants have been found to disrupt hormonal balance by blocking, mimicking, or disrupting functions within the intricate homeostasis of the human body. Moreover, certain water pollutants, including specific pesticides and industrial chemicals, have been associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as mood swings, depression, cognitive decline, and anxiety, impacting both women and men. Water pollution is also associated with physical ailments, such as diarrhea, skin diseases, malnutrition, and cancer. Exposure to specific pollutants may promote premature menopause and vasomotor symptoms, elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease, and reduce bone density. In men, exposure to water pollution has been shown to reduce LH, FSH, and testosterone serum levels. The oxidative stress induced by pollutants prompts apoptosis of Sertoli and germ cells, inhibiting spermatogenesis and altering the normal morphology and concentration of sperm. Environmental estrogens further contribute to reduced sperm counts, reproductive system disruptions, and the feminization of male traits. Studies affirm that men generally exhibit a lower susceptibility than women to hormonal changes and health issues attributed to water pollutants. This discrepancy may be attributed to the varied water-related activities which have traditionally been undertaken by women, as well as differences in immune responses between genders. The implementation of effective measures to control water pollution and interventions aimed at safeguarding and enhancing the well-being of the aging population is imperative. The use of dentistry in forensic medicine has gradually become an indispensable tool in the process of identifying human remains. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the importance of this field in the identification of victims in mass disasters, criminal investigations, ethnic research, and the identification of decomposed and distorted bodies, such as drowning, fire and car accident victims. Dental examinations allow for precise determination of individual identities based on unique dental features. Various methods applied in forensic medicine in the realm of dentistry include dental impressions, radiographs, photographic examinations, rugoscopy, cheiloscopy, and molecular methods. Advanced dental analysis techniques make it possible to restore identities even in the most challenging cases. Equally important is the integration of knowledge and methods of forensic dentistry with other forensic disciplines such as molecular genetics and anthropology. Further research and development in this branch of science are crucial for improving investigative processes and ensuring the dignity of mass disaster victims. The aim of this work is to present methods using teeth for the identification of human remains along with the latest advancements in forensic DNA technology, which utilizes dental evidence to aid in the identification of human remains.

Pancreatic cancer is the seventh most common cause of death in the group of oncological diseases. Due to the asymptomatic course, early diagnosis is difficult. Currently, early detection methods are only used in high-risk groups. A literature review based on the available results of observational studies on patients with pancreatic cancer and people from high-risk groups was used to summarize the knowledge on risk factors. The GLOBOCAN 2020 data were used to assess the epidemiological situation in Europe. A summary of screening recommendations was prepared based on the available documents from medical organizations and associations. Pancreatic cancer risk factors are divided into two main groups: non-modifiable factors, e.g., hereditary factors and age, which increase the risk of developing this disease, and modifiable factors-BMI, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Hereditary factors account for 10% of pancreatic cancer cases. The highly specialized methods of early detection, (MRI, CT, or EUS) are used for screening high-risk populations. Of all the imaging methods, EUS is considered the most sensitive for pancreatic cancer and allows an accurate assessment of the size of even small lesions (<30 mm) and the extent of tumour infiltration into blood vessels. The available studies vary on the level of sensitivity and specificity of these methods for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. EUS, MRI, and CT are also expensive procedures and in some patients can be invasive, which is one of the arguments against the introduction of population screening programs based on imaging methods. Therefore, it is important to look for viable solutions that would improve early detection. This is important from the point of view of healthcare systems in Europe, where almost 29% of all global pancreatic cancer cases are reported.

The most common tumour of the pancreas is ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). It remains one of the most lethal non-neuroendocrine solid tumours despite the use of a multi-approach strategy. Other, less-common neoplasms, which are responsible for 15% of pancreatic lesions, differ in treatment and prognosis. Due to the low incidence rate, there is a lack of information about the rarest pancreatic tumours. In this review, we described six rare pancreatic tumours: intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN), mucinous cystadenoma (MCN), serous cystic neoplasm (SCN), acinar cell carcinoma (ACC), solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) and pancreatoblastoma (PB). We distinguished their epidemiology, clinical and gross features, covered the newest reports about courses of treatment and systematised differential diagnoses. Although the most common pancreatic tumour, PDAC, has the highest malignant potential, it is still essential to properly classify and differentiate less-common lesions. It is vital to continue the search for new biomarkers, genetic mutations and the development of more specific biochemical tests for determining malignancy in rare pancreatic neoplasms.

The bony skeleton, as a structural foundation for the human body, is essential in providing mechanical function and movement. The human skeleton is a highly specialized and dynamic organ that undergoes continuous remodeling as it adapts to the demands of its environment. Advances in research over the last decade have shone light on the various hormones that influence this process, modulating the metabolism and structural integrity of bone. More recently, novel and non-traditional functions of hypothalamic, pituitary, and adipose hormones and their effects on bone homeostasis have been proposed. This review highlights recent work on physiological bone remodeling and discusses our knowledge, as it currently stands, on the systemic interplay of factors regulating this interaction. In this review, we provide a summary of the literature on the relationship between bone physiology and hormones including kisspeptin, neuropeptide Y, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), growth hormone (GH), leptin, and adiponectin. The discovery and understanding of this new functionality unveils an entirely new layer of physiologic circuitry.

The process of material cutting emerges from a series of nonlinear phenomena including frictional contact, plastic deformation, and fracture. While cutting dominated by shear deformation is of interest to achieve a smooth material removal and a high-quality surface finish, the fracture-induced chip breaking is of equal importance to prevent the formation of long chips. Here we show that discrepant observations and predictions of these two distinct cutting mechanisms can be reconciled into a unified framework. A simple analytical model is developed to predict the mechanism of chip formation in a homogeneous medium as a function of work piece intrinsic material properties, tool geometry, and the process parameters. The model reveals the existence of a critical depth of cut, below which the chip formation is gradually progressed by plastic deformation in the shear plane, and above which chips break off by abrupt crack propagation. The models' prediction is validated by systematic in situ orthogonal cutting experiments and literature data for a wide range of materials over multiple length scales.

BRCA1-mutated breast cancer (BC) is responsible for approximately 25% of hereditary breast cancer cases. BRCA1 is a tumor suppressor protein regulating the cell cycle and DNA repair; therefore its dysfunctions play a significant role in carcinogenesis. BRCA1-mutated BC is associated with basal-like phenotype, lack of expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in addition to frequent TP53 mutations and poor prognosis. Currently used criteria for genetic evaluation of BC for the risk of hereditary mutations are based on patients' age and family history, and therefore are prone to be imprecise or incomplete. This review discusses recently developed sets of immunohistochemical markers, promising independent markers (nestin, ALDH1, FOXO3, claudins, topoisomerase 1, EGFR) and their potential to be incorporated into clinical practice as a support tool in oncological counseling. This approach could be applied as a screening method for cost-effective selection of cases requiring genetic testing or adapted in pathology laboratories with limited access to molecular techniques. Although not all of the described predictor models have been validated yet, they could further improve the performance of BRCA1 screening methods in BC in the near future via increasing the accuracy of criteria for further genetic evaluation.

Introduction: Metaplastic breast cancer (MpBC) is a rare but aggressive type of breast cancer accounting for 0.25-1% of all diagnosed invasive breast cancers. Morphologically, it is characterized by differentiation of the neoplastic epithelium into squamous cells and/or mesenchymal-looking tissue., Material and Methods: We analyzed 13 MpBCs selected from the group of 1122 invasive breast cancers. Histopathological examination and analysis of estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR) and HER2 receptors expression in MpBC patients and their comparison to other types of invasive breast cancer has been performed., Results: 13 MpBC cases represented 1.16% of the 1122 invasive breast cancers. The MpBC group presented with a significantly larger tumor size (≥T2, 69% versus 49%, p < 0.001) and with higher grade of histological malignancy (G1-G3) (p < 0.001). MpBC group had significantly more cases with no hormone receptors (ER, PR) and HER2 overexpression/gene amplification compared with the other invasive breast cancer types group (ER-, 69% versus 23%, p < 0.001; PR-, 69% versus 28%, p < 0.001; HER2 0/1+, 93% versus 82%, p = 0.019). Most MpBCs (62%) were triple-negative. We found a correlation between hormone receptors expression and lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001). The analysis of the HER2 expression allowed us to find correlation between its expression and tumor histological grade (G1-G3) (p < 0.001), tumor size (T1a-T4) (p < 0.001) and lymph node metastasis (pN0-pN4) (p < 0.001) in MpBCs., Discussion: MpBCs are usually larger at primary diagnosis and most of MpBCs present with other poor prognostic indicators and show lack of steroid hormone receptors expression as well as HER2. Hormone receptor status and HER2 expression seems to correlate with histological grade of malignancy (G1-G3), tumor size (T1a-T4) and regional lymph node involvement (pN0-pN4) and these features are directly related to MpBC malignancy., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. A prototype bioluminescence-based biosensor was designed and constructed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO(2)) gas under various treatment conditions. The biosensor consisted of a bioluminescent bioreporter (Pseudomonas fluorescens 5RL), an optical transducer (photomultiplier tube), and a light-tight chamber housing, the bioreporter and the transducer. The bioluminescent recombinant P. fluorescens 5RL in the biosensor allowed for online monitoring of bioluminescence during ClO(2) gas disinfection. Experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of the two key physical parameters associated with ClO(2) disinfection: relative humidity (40, 60, 80%) and ClO(2) gas concentration (0.5, 1.0, 1.6, 2.1 mg/l) on the bioreporter. Results showed that increasing concentrations of ClO(2) gas corresponded to a faster decrease in luminescence. The rates of luminescence decrease from P. fluorescens 5RL, and the log reduction time (LRT, time required to obtain 1-log reduction in luminescence) were calculated for each treatment tested. The LRT values of luminescence were 103, 78, 53, and 35 s for 0.5, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.1 mg/l of ClO(2) gas treatment, respectively, at 78% relative humidity. The gas concentration which caused a tenfold change in LRT (z value) for luminescence of P. fluorescens 5RL was 3.4 mg/l of ClO(2). The prototype biosensor showed potential for many applications, such as monitoring real-time microbial inactivation and understanding parameters that influence the efficacy of gaseous decontamination procedures.
