2. The thermal control challenge of the Mars observer spacecraft

Abstract

The thermal control subsystem for the Mars Observer spacecraft has been synthesized from hardware currently in use on earth-orbiting satellites. Heat input to the spacecraft from environmental and internal sources varies widely throughout the mission, and system requirements, such as accommodation of payload instrument fields-of-view and minimization of weight and power, limit the sizes and locations of thermal control elements. Subsystem components are primarily passive, although heaters and louvers provide augmented control where required. Spacecraft-level finite difference thermal models have shown that all component temperature requirements are met with margin.

3. MPD thruster operation with inductively stored energy

Abstract

Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters with 10-cm and 2.5-cm long thoriated tungsten cathodes have been operated with both inductive and capacitive energy sources at currents up to 8 kA. Voltage-current characteristics and magnetic field measurements show that over most of the operating range, the inductively driven thruster acts as a continuously varying quasi-steady accelerator at the same current. However, at values of a specified parameter near the onset condition for voltage fluctuations and electrode and insulator erosion, the voltage for the inductively driven thruster is higher than its quasi-steady counterpart. This higher voltage occurs because the equilibration time constant of the MPD discharge, is too large to allow the terminal voltage to attain a quasi-steady value as the inductively driven current decreases.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether health-related quality of life (HRQL) would be improved in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related Kaposi's sarcoma treated by pegylated-liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) as compared to those treated by a conventional combination of doxorubicin, bleomycin, and vincristine (ABV). One hundred thirty-three patients received PLD and 125 patients received ABV every 2 weeks with a planned total of 6 cycles. Patients completed a 30-item AIDS-related HRQL questionnaire before beginning treatment (baseline), every 2 weeks while on treatment, and about 21 days after the end of treatment. Twenty-two items, involving nine domains, were analyzable. While on treatment, PLD-treated patients with partial clinical responses achieved statistically significant greater improvement (compared to baseline) in general health than did ABV-treated patients with partial clinical responses (rho = 0.008). By the end of treatment, the overall group of patients receiving PLD showed statistically significant greater improvement in pain and energy/fatigue than did the group receiving ABV (rho = 0.01-0.002). Abstract

Objective: To compare the safety of sterile water and glycine when used as bladder irrigation during transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate (TUVP) in a randomized controlled trial., Patients and Methods: The study comprised 50 consecutive patients admitted for transurethral prostatic surgery who were randomly allocated to receive bladder irrigation with either sterile water or 1.5% glycine during TUVP. After surgery, serum electrolytes and the presence of free plasma haemoglobin (suggesting haemolysis) were determined and the patients observed for clinical evidence of the transurethral resection (TUR) syndrome., Results: There was no significant difference in the level of free plasma haemoglobin between the groups and no difference in serum sodium levels. None of the patients developed any signs of the TUR syndrome., Conclusions: Water is a safe irrigant for use during TUVP and has several advantages over 1.5% glycine.
