Abstract

Photosynthetic light response curve parameters help us understand the interspecific variation in photosynthetic traits, leaf acclimation status, carbon uptake, and plant productivity in specific environments. These parameters are also influenced by leaf traits which rely on species and growth environment. In accessions of four amaranth species (Amaranthus. hybridus, A. dubius, A. hypochondriacus, and A. cruentus), we determined variations in the net photosynthetic light response curves and leaf traits, and analysed the relationships between maximum gross photosynthetic rate, leaf traits, and whole-plant productivity. Non-rectangular hyperbolae were used for the net photosynthesis light response curves. Maximum gross photosynthetic rate (Pgmax) was the only variant parameter among the species, ranging from 22.29 to 34.21 μmol m–2 s–1. Interspecific variation existed for all the leaf traits except leaf mass per area and leaf inclination angle. Stomatal conductance, nitrogen, chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents, as well as leaf area correlated with Pgmax. Stomatal conductance and leaf nitrogen explained much of the variation in Pgmax at the leaf level. At the plant level, the slope between absolute growth rate and leaf area showed a strong linear relationship with Pgmax. Overall, A. hybridus and A. cruentus exhibited higher Pgmax at the leaf level and light use efficiency at the whole-plant level than A. dubius, and A. hypochondriacus. Thus, A. hybridus and A. cruentus tended to be more efficient with respect to carbon assimilation. These findings highlight the correlation between leaf photosynthetic characteristics, other leaf traits, and whole plant productivity in amaranths. Future studies may explore more species and accessions of Amaranthus at different locations or light environments.

Abstract

Root system scientists strive to understand how a single root, emerging from a plant’s seed, can form a complex, dynamic and plastic network of thousands of individual roots. They investigate how such a network is ideally suited to perform a number of functions required for the harmonious development of the whole plant. Everyone in the community also knows how complicated it can be to study root systems, with tasks ranging from digging plants out of the soil, creating experimental set-ups that allow the observation of the roots, to quantifying the root network itself or the processes underlying its formation. Within the community, there is one person, Dr Loïc Pagès, who has been working on all these tasks for many years, and who has moved the field forward numerous times. On the occasion of his soon-to-be retirement, we would like to express our appreciation to him via this editorial.

Abstract

Rapid development in the different computer science fields during the recent decades has facilitated the creation of new applications in the area of dynamic simulation of plant development. Among these new applications, simulation of trees swaying in the wind is of great importance, as those computer graphics related areas, e.g., computer games, tree cultivation and forest management simulations, help a lot in revealing the mechanisms of tree dynamics under wind load. However, it is a big challenge to balance the effect of visualization in real time and calculation efficiency for any simulation algorithm. A physics-based algorithm to simulate tree dynamics under wind load was proposed in this study. A mechanistic model simulating the bending of a cantilever beam was used within the algorithm to simulate deformation of stems, and the algorithm was integrated with a landscape model in which different types of trees were constructed with an L-system-based formalism. Simulation results show that realistic dynamic effects can be achieved with reasonably high computational efficiency.

Abstract

UMR AGAP - équipe AFEF - Architecture et fonctionnement des espèces fruitièresUMR AGAP - équipe AFEF - Architecture et fonctionnement des espèces fruitières; We describe an ongoing project which aims at a better understanding of the development and functioning of apple trees by modelling them at several spatial and temporal scales. Dependence of growth and carbon allocation upon genotype, environmental variables (particularly, water supply), fruit load and experimental manipulation of carbon transport is investigated and simulated. For the required functional-structural models, new tools are developed, especially for handling multiple-scale representations of the same organism in a user-friendly way, for cross-platform modelling and for facilitating the application of rigorous methods of parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis.

Abstract

The current European research landscape of 3D plant modeling shows fragmentation and critically lacks coordination. The CyberPlantS initiative aims at creating the first European network on advanced plant simulation systems and associated e-infrastructure. The network will aim at innovation in computational plant modeling with a focus on plant architecture and plant-environment interactions. It is focused on the development of a new paradigm, namely cyberplants. Cyberplants refers to cybernetic systems, as biological and environmental components of vegetation exchange signals to achieve specific goals. Cyberplants also refers to cyberspace, which designates a collaborative approach based on a network community relying on a cyberinfrastructure.

49. Cocowood Fibrovascular Tissue System--Another Wonder of Plant Evolution.

Abstract

The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) stem tissue (referred to as cocowood in this study) is a complex fibrovascular system that is made up of fibrovascular bundles embedded into a parenchymatous ground tissue. The complex configuration of fibrovascular bundles along with the non-uniform distribution of the material properties likely allow senile coconut stems to optimize their biomechanical performance per unit mass (i.e., mechanical efficiency) and grow into tall, slender, and very flexible plants with minimum resources of biomass and water. For the first time, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper examines, from the integral (i.e., stem structure) and macroscopic (i.e., tissue structure) levels of hierarchy, the characteristic triple helix formation depicted by the fibrovascular bundles within the monocotyledon cocowood. The natural course of the tangential orientation of the axial fibrovascular bundles is mapped for the whole cocowood structure by quantifying 264 cocowood discs, corresponding to 41 senile coconut palms estimated to be >70 years old. The observed variations were modeled in this paper by simple equations that partially enabled characterization of the cocowood fibrovascular tissue system. Furthermore, 11 finite element analyses (FEA) were performed over a three dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model resembling a characteristic coconut palm stem of 25m in height to analyze the biomaterial reactions produced by the progressive deviation of the tangential fibrovascular bundles on the cocowood mechanical response (i.e., on the material compressive strength and the bending stiffness). The analyses in this study were carried out for the critical wind speed of 23 m/s (i.e., Gale tornado according to the Fujita tornado scale). For each analysis, the characteristic average maxima degree of orientation of the cocowood fibrovascular bundles was varied from 0 to 51. The acquired results provided a deep understanding of the cocowood optimum fibrovascular tissue system that denotes the natural evolution of the material through millions of years. The knowledge advanced from this study may also serve as concept generators for innovative biomimetic applications to improve current engineered wood products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
