Abstract: Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Abstract: Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Abstract: Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Abstract: The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. 6. Tracing the Galactic Disk with Planetary Nebulae using Gaia DR3

Abstract: We study the population of Galactic planetary Nebulae (PNe) and their central stars (CSs) through the analysis of their heliocentric distances and Galactic distribution. Distances are obtained by means of a revised statistical scale, based on an astrometrically-defined sample of CSs parallaxes from Gaia DR3 as calibrators. The statistical scale is applied to infer distances of a significant number (~850) of Galactic PNe, for which we deliver a new catalog of PN distances. By adopting a circular velocity curve of the Galaxy, we also derive 3D peculiar velocities from DR3 proper motions and published radial velocities of a large sample (~300) of PN CSs. We date PN progenitors based both on the best chemical abundances culled from the literature and on CS kinematic properties, finding a confirmation of the first method with the second. The slope of the radial oxygen gradient of the Galactic Disk traced by the complete PNe sample amounts to -0.0144 +/- 0.00385 [dex/kpc]. Furthermore, by distinguishing between PNe with old (> 7.5 Gyr) and young (< 1 Gyr) progenitors, we estimate the gradient to be respectively -0.0121 +/- 0.00465 and -0.022 +/- 0.00758 [dex/kpc], thus disclosing a mild steepening since Galaxy formation, with a slope change of 0.01 dex. 7. The MPI + CUDA Gaia AVU-GSR Parallel Solver Toward Next-generation Exascale Infrastructures

Abstract: We ported to the GPU with CUDA the Astrometric Verification Unit-Global Sphere Reconstruction (AVU-GSR) Parallel Solver developed for the ESA Gaia mission, by optimizing a previous OpenACC porting of this application. The code aims to find, with a [10,100]$\mu$as precision, the astrometric parameters of $\sim$$10^8$ stars, the attitude and instrumental settings of the Gaia satellite, and the global parameter $\gamma$ of the parametrized Post-Newtonian formalism, by solving a system of linear equations, $A\times x=b$, with the LSQR iterative algorithm. The coefficient matrix $A$ of the final Gaia dataset is large, with $\sim$$10^{11} \times 10^8$ elements, and sparse, reaching a size of $\sim$10-100 TB, typical for the Big Data analysis, which requires an efficient parallelization to obtain scientific results in reasonable timescales. The speedup of the CUDA code over the original AVU-GSR solver, parallelized on the CPU with MPI+OpenMP, increases with the system size and the number of resources, reaching a maximum of $\sim$14x, >9x over the OpenACC application. This result is obtained by comparing the two codes on the CINECA cluster Marconi100, with 4 V100 GPUs per node. After verifying the agreement between the solutions of a set of systems with different sizes computed with the CUDA and the OpenMP codes and that the solutions showed the required precision, the CUDA code was put in production on Marconi100, essential for an optimal AVU-GSR pipeline and the successive Gaia Data Releases. This analysis represents a first step to understand the (pre-)Exascale behavior of a class of applications that follow the same structure of this code. 8. Feral frogs, native newts, and chemical cues: identifying threats from and management opportunities for invasive African Clawed Frogs in Washington state.

Abstract: Invasive species threaten biodiversity globally. Amphibians are one of the most threatened vertebrate taxa and are particularly sensitive to invasive species, including other amphibians. African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) are native to Southern Africa but have subsequently become invasive on multiple continents-including multiple parts of North America-due to releases from the pet and biomedical trades. Despite their prevalence as a global invader, the impact of X. laevis remains understudied. This includes the Pacific Northwest of the USA, which now hosts multiple expanding X. laevis populations. For many amphibians, chemical cues communicate important information, including the presence of predators. Here, we tested the role chemical cues may play in mediating interactions between feral X. laevis and native amphibians in the Pacific Northwest. We tested whether native red-legged frog (Rana aurora) tadpoles display an antipredator response to non-native frog (X. laevis) or native newt (rough-skinned newts, Taricha granulosa) predator chemical stimuli. We found that R. aurora tadpoles exhibited pronounced anti-predator responses when exposed to chemical cues from T. granulosa but did not display anti-predator response to invasive X. laevis chemical cues. We also began experimentally testing whether T. granulosa-which produce a powerful neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX)-may elicit an anti-predator response in X. laevis, that could serve to deter co-occupation. However, our short-duration experiments found that X. laevis were attracted to newt chemical stimuli rather than deterred. Our findings show that X. laevis likely poses a threat to native amphibians, and that these native species may also be particularly vulnerable to this invasive predator, compared to native predators, because toxic native newts may not limit X. laevis invasions. Our research provides some of the first indications that native Pacific Northwest species may be threatened by feral X. laevis and provides a foundation for future experiments testing potential management techniques for X. laevis.

9. Eye Movements are like Gestures in the Creation of Informal Algorithms

Abstract: People who have no experience with programming can create informal programs to rearrange the order of cars in trains. To find out whether they rely on kinematic mental simulations, the current studies examined participants' eye movements in two experiments in which participants performed various moves and rearrangements on a railway consisting of a main track running from left to right and a siding entered from and exited to the left track. In Experiment 1, they had to imagine different sorts of single moves of cars on the railway. The sequences of their fixations resembled iconic gestures: they tended to look at the starting location of the imagined move, and then at its final location. In Experiment 2, the task was to create descriptions of how to solve four sorts of rearrangements that differ in their Kolmogorov complexity. It predicted the time to find the correct solution and the relative number and duration of fixations recorded during the description of each move for rearrangements of different complexity. Participants were more likely to fixate on the symbols on the cars than anything else, and they fixated longer when the rearrangement was more difficult. They also tended to fixate regions of the tracks where a car's movement began or ended, as if they were imagining a car moving along the tracks. The results suggest that humans rely on a kinematic mental simulation when creating informal algorithms.

10. False Memories of Actions: When Motor Simulation is Deceptive

Abstract: Seeing a person preparing to perform an action and later remembering having seen subsequent phases of the action, but not previous phases. This is what a theory on the role of the motor system in the creation and recovery of memories predicts can happen. We investigate memory for action after viewing an image representing an actor acting on a series of everyday objects. The participants in one experiment viewed a series of still photos of unfolding actions on objects (e.g., blowing the nose), and 15 minutes later they were asked to complete a recognition task. At recognition, participants viewed photos representing temporally distant moments, backward or forward in time compared to the original, along with the same photos seen at encoding. Results showed that participants tended to accept forward photos more than backward photos. In a pilot study, we explored the role of the temporal distance between encoding and recognition. Results showed that when 3 days elapsed between the encoding and recognition phases, participants did not tend to accept forward photos more than backward photos.

11. Emotion, Belief, and the Words of the Law

Abstract: An assertion about a fact can in principle be tested in observations. That is impossible for assertions about what is permissible or obligatory, i.e., deontic assertions based on moral principles, conventions, rules, or laws. Many modal logics concern these matters. But an integrated theory of emotions and reasoning predicts that emotional reactions and strength of belief should be correlated for deontic assertions, but not for factual assertions. You can be convinced that it is wrong to take paperclips from the office, and that it is right for society to provide health care for everyone, and your emotional response to these two assertions is likely to correlate with the strength of your beliefs in them. In contrast, you can be convinced both that fresh snow is white and that fossil fuels are making the world hotter, but have an emotional reaction to only the second of these assertions. Grounds for factual assertions are empirical findings. But assessments of deontic assertions depend in part on the emotions that they elicit. Previous studies have corroborated this prediction for moral claims, matters of convention, prudential rules, and personal recommendations. We report two experiments that yield the same interaction for legal pronouncements from the Italian Civil Code compared with parallel factual assertions. People like propositions they believe, and they believe propositions they like. We discuss several remaining unknowns including the potential role of emotions in reasoning about legal and other deontic propositions.

12. A new kinematic model of the Galaxy: analysis of the stellar velocity field from Gaia Data Release 3

Abstract: This work presents the results of a kinematic analysis of the Galaxy that uses a new model as applied to the newest available Gaia data. We carry out the Taylor decomposition of the velocity field up to second order for 18 million high luminosity stars (i.e. OBAF-type stars, giants and subgiants) from the Gaia DR3 data. We determine the components of mean stellar velocities and their first and second partial derivatives (relative to cylindrical coordinates) for more than 28 thousand points in the plane of our Galaxy. We estimate Oort's constants $A$, $B$, $C$, and $K$ and other kinematics parameters and map them as a function of Galactocentric coordinates. The values found confirm the results of our previous works and are in excellent agreement with those obtained by other authors in the Solar neighbourhood. In addition, the introduction of second order partial derivatives of the stellar velocity field allows us to determine the values of the vertical gradient of the Galaxy azimuthal, radial and vertical velocities. Also, we determine the mean of the Galaxy rotation curve for Galactocentric distances from 4 kpc to 18 kpc by averaging Galactic azimuths in the range -30$^\circ$ < $\theta$ < +30$^\circ$ about the direction Galactic Centre-Sun-Galactic anticentre. Maps of the velocity components and of their partial derivatives with respect to coordinates within 10 kpc of the Sun reveal complex substructures, which provide clear evidence of non-axisymmetric features of the Galaxy. 13. Native amphibian toxin reduces invasive crayfish feeding with potential benefits to stream biodiversity.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Biodiversity is generally reduced when non-native species invade an ecosystem. Invasive crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, populate California freshwater streams, and in the Santa Monica Mountains (Los Angeles, USA), their introduction has led to trophic cascades due to omnivorous feeding behavior and a rapid rate of population growth. The native California newt, Taricha torosa, possesses a neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX), that affects freshwater animal behavior. Given P. clarkii has a limited evolutionary history with TTX, we hypothesized that TTX may affect crayfish feeding behaviors. To determine if TTX affects P. clarkii behavior, we measured cumulative movement and various feeding behaviors of P. clarkii exposed to (i) waterborne, ecologically realistic concentrations of TTX (~ 3.0 × 10- 8 moles/L), (ii) an anuran chemical cue to account for intraguild cues, or (iii) a T. torosa chemical cue with quantitated TTX in it (~ 6.2 × 10- 8 moles/L). RESULTS: We found that the presence of TTX in any form significantly reduced crayfish movement and decreased the amount of food consumed over time. Crayfish responses to the anuran treatment did not significantly differ from controls. CONCLUSION: Our laboratory results show that naturally occurring neurotoxin from native California newts limits invasive crayfish foraging and feeding rates, which may play a role in preserving local stream ecosystems by limiting invasive crayfish behaviors that are detrimental to biodiversity.

16. Exploring New Topologies for the Theory of Clones

Abstract: Clones of operations of arity omega (referred to as omega-operations) have been employed by Neumann to represent varieties of infinitary algebras defined by operations of at most arity omega. More recently, clone algebras have been introduced to study clones of functions, including omega-operations, within the framework of one-sorted universal algebra. Additionally, polymorphisms of arity omega, which are omega-operations preserving the relations of a given first-order structure, have recently been used to establish model theory results with applications in the field of complexity of CSP problems. In this paper, we undertake a topological and algebraic study of polymorphisms of arity omega and their corresponding invariant relations. Given a set A and a Boolean ideal X on the set of omega-sequences of elements of A, we propose a method to endow the set of omega-operations on A with a topology, which we refer to as X-topology. Notably, the topology of pointwise convergence can be retrieved as a special case of this approach. Polymorphisms and invariant relations are then defined parametrically, with respect to the X-topology. We characterise the X-closed clones of omega-operations in terms of polymorphisms and invariant relations of arity omega, and present a method to relate those infinitary invariant relation and polymorphisms to the classical (finitary) Inv-Pol.

Abstract: Planetary nebulae (PNe), the ejected envelopes of red giant stars, provide us with a history of the last, mass-losing phases of 90 percent of stars initially more massive than the Sun. Here, we analyse James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observation (ERO) images of the PN NGC3132. A structured, extended H2 halo surrounding an ionised central bubble is imprinted with spiral structures, likely shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at 40-60 AU. The images also reveal a mid-IR excess at the central star interpreted as a dusty disk, indicative of an interaction with another, closer companion. Including the previously known, A-type visual companion, the progenitor of the NGC3132 PN must have been at least a stellar quartet. The JWST images allow us to generate a model of the illumination, ionisation and hydrodynamics of the molecular halo, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate complex stellar outflows. Further, new measurements of the A-type visual companion allow us to derive the value for the mass of the progenitor of a central star to date with excellent precision: 2.86+/-0.06 Mo. Abstract: The Gaia Astrometric Verification Unit-Global Sphere Reconstruction (AVU-GSR) Parallel Solver aims to find the astrometric parameters for $\sim$10$^8$ stars in the Milky Way, the attitude and the instrumental specifications of the Gaia satellite, and the global parameter $\gamma$ of the post Newtonian formalism. The code iteratively solves a system of linear equations, $\mathbf{A} \times \vec{x} = \vec{b}$, where the coefficient matrix $\mathbf{A}$ is large ($\sim$$10^{11} \times 10^8$ elements) and sparse. To solve this system of equations, the code exploits a hybrid implementation of the iterative PC-LSQR algorithm, where the computation related to different horizontal portions of the coefficient matrix is assigned to separate MPI processes. In the original code, each matrix portion is further parallelized over the OpenMP threads. To further improve the code performance, we ported the application to the GPU, replacing the OpenMP parallelization language with OpenACC. In this port, $\sim$95% of the data is copied from the host to the device at the beginning of the entire cycle of iterations, making the code $compute$ $bound$ rather than $data$$-$$transfer$ $bound$. The OpenACC code presents a speedup of $\sim$1.5 over the OpenMP version but further optimizations are in progress to obtain higher gains. Abstract: Background. Astrometry at or below the micro-arcsec level with an imaging telescope assumes that the uncertainty on the location of an unresolved source can be an arbitrarily small fraction of the detector pixel, given a sufficient photon budget. Aim. This paper investigates the geometric limiting precision, in terms of CCD pixel fraction, achieved by a large set of star field images, selected among the publicly available science data of the TESS mission. Method. The statistics of the distance between selected bright stars ($G \simeq 5\,mag$), in pixel units, is evaluated, using the position estimate provided in the TESS light curve files. Results. The dispersion of coordinate differences appears to be affected by long term variation and noisy periods, at the level of $0.01$ pixel. The residuals with respect to low-pass filtered data (tracing the secular evolution), which are interpreted as the experimental astrometric noise, reach the level of a few milli-pixel or below, down to $1/5,900$ pixel. Saturated images are present, evidencing that the astrometric precision is mostly preserved across the CCD columns, whereas it features a graceful degradation in the along column direction. The cumulative performance of the image set is a few micro-pixel across columns, or a few 10 micro-pixel along columns. Conclusions. The idea of astrometric precision down to a small fraction of a CCD pixel, given sufficient signal to noise ratio, is confirmed by real data from an in-flight science instrument to the $10^{-6}$ pixel level. Abstract: Neuroscience studies entail the generation of massive collections of heterogeneous data (e.g. demographics, clinical records, medical images). Integration and analysis of such data in research centers is pivotal for elucidating disease mechanisms and improving clinical outcomes. However, data collection in clinics often relies on non-standardized methods, such as paper-based documentation. Moreover, diverse data types are collected in different departments hindering efficient data organization, secure sharing and compliance to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. Henceforth, in this manuscript we present a specialized data management system designed to enhance research workflows in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), a state-of-the-art neurosurgical procedure employed to treat symptoms of movement and psychiatric disorders. The system leverages REDCap to promote accurate data capture in hospital settings and secure sharing with research institutes, Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) as image storing standard and a DBS-specific SQLite database as comprehensive data store and unified interface to all data types. A self-developed Python tool automates the data flow between these three components, ensuring their full interoperability. The proposed framework has already been successfully employed for capturing and analyzing data of 107 patients from 2 medical institutions. It effectively addresses the challenges of managing, sharing and retrieving diverse data types, fostering advancements in data quality, organization, analysis, and collaboration among medical and research institutions.

Women, because of their roles in food production and their unique physiological responses to nutrients, face distinct vulnerabilities. This review explores the interplay between climate change, diet, and cardiovascular health in women. The review highlights that sustainable diets, particularly the Mediterranean diet, offer health benefits and lower environmental impacts but are threatened by climate change-induced disruptions. Women's adherence to the Mediterranean diet is linked to significant reductions in CVD risk, though sex-specific responses need further research.Resilient agricultural practices, efficient water management, and climate-smart farming are essential to mitigate climate change's negative impacts on food security. Abstract: Background Barth syndrome is a rare, life-threatening X-linked recessive mitochondrial disorder of lipid metabolism primarily affecting males. Previous research suggests that bezafibrate may ameliorate cellular lipid abnormalities and reduce cardiac dysfunction in an animal model. Objectives Estimate the effect of bezafibrate on clinical, biochemical, and quality-of-life outcomes. Investigate whether within-participant clinical changes parallel in vitro changes in cardiolipin ratio/profile and mitochondrial morphology when each participant’s cells are cultured with bezafibrate. Investigate as for objective 2, culturing each participant’s cells with resveratrol. Describe the most feasible methods and standardised outcome measures to optimise the conduct of future trials and evaluations in Barth syndrome. Describe features of the research infrastructure which optimised recruitment, retention and communication with families and people with Barth syndrome. Describe the perceptions of participants and their families about the research and any important potential barriers to participation. Design Randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of bezafibrate versus placebo. Setting NHS hospital providing UK-wide Barth Syndrome Service. Participants Males aged ≥ 6 years with a confirmed diagnosis of Barth syndrome with stable cardiac status, able to swallow tablets of bezafibrate/placebo. Exclusions were: hypersensitivity or allergy to bezafibrate or any component of bezafibrate; hepatic, liver or renal dysfunction; gallbladder disease; or recent deterioration in general health. Interventions Fifteen weeks of bezafibrate in one period and placebo in a second period, or vice versa (randomly allocated), with at least a 1-month washout between periods. Main outcome measures The primary outcome was peak VO2; secondary outcomes were cardiac function rest and exercise echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging, cardiolipin ratio, quality of life, dynamic skeletal muscle P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mitochondrial studies and neutrophil counts, and adverse events. Outcomes were measured at baseline and the end of each period. Results Eleven males were studied; all attended all three assessments. There was no difference in peak VO2 between periods (0.66 ml/kg/min lower with bezafibrate than placebo, 95% confidence interval 2.34 to 1.03; p = 0.43). There was a trend towards a higher left ventricular ejection fraction with bezafibrate when measured by echocardiography but not magnetic resonance imaging, and better echocardiography-derived rest longitudinal and circumferential strain with bezafibrate. There was no difference in quality of life or cardiolipin ratio between periods. Skeletal muscle 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed cross-sectionally and showed a trend to higher Tau and lower Qmax indices in the bazafibrate group. Two participants had serious, expected adverse reactions when taking bezafibrate; otherwise, bezafibrate was well tolerated. Limitations The sample size was very small; the bezafibrate dose may have been too low or 15 weeks too short to observe an effect; measurements of mitochondrial content and membrane potential were highly variable; P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy was available only at the final assessment. Conclusions This study did not show significant improvement in the primary and secondary outcomes with bezafibrate treatment. Future work Elamipretide, studied in a small crossover trial in the USA, is another potential intervention which may be worth evaluating in an international study. Plain language summary Barth syndrome is a rare genetic syndrome with mutations in the tafazzin gene causing long-term effects in several organ systems, leading to significant lifelong comorbidities and a reduced quality of life. Barth syndrome shows an X-linked inheritance, hence it is almost exclusively present in males. Tafazzin gene mutations impair overall cell energy metabolism, and affected individuals show compromise of the immune system with a high risk for life-threatening infections, as well as cardiac dysfunction and cardiomyopathy, muscle and general fatigue, and generally reduced mobility also leading to psychological challenges and dysfunction. Currently, specific medical therapies are limited to symptomatic treatment, and drug therapies targeting the causative mitochondrial energy disturbance are urgently needed. This randomised controlled trial explored the use of oral bezafibrate, a licensed drug that can improve cell energy metabolism. Eleven male patients received either bezafibrate or a placebo for 4 months. Exercise capacity by cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a cycle ergometer, as the primary outcome measurement, as well as cardiac function by echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging, and cellular anatomy and function by in vitro assays and microscopy, were measured before and after this 4-month period. Bezafibrate did not significantly improve exercise capacity, cardiac function or the cellular metabolism, although several cardiac function parameters showed slight improvements with bezafibrate treatment. No significant adverse effects were recorded. The limitations of the trial were its low participant number and the relatively short duration of the drug treatment phase. The trial did prove that complex randomised controlled drug trials are feasible in people with rare diseases. Adherence was good, with parents reporting few difficulties with pill swallowing. The qualitative interviews also found that the study was acceptable to participants and the burden of participating not too onerous. We hope the research can provide a template for future studies. Scientific summary Introduction Barth syndrome is a very rare, life-threatening, X-linked recessive genetic disease almost exclusively affecting young males, caused by abnormal lipids in mitochondria. The tafazzin gene (TAZ) encodes tafazzin, a phospholipid acyltransferase. Tafazzin transfers unsaturated fatty acids with acyl chains from phospholipids to monolysocardiolipin (MLCL) and regulates remodelling and maturation of cardiolipin, a phospholipid located exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Mature tetralinoleoyl-cardiolipin (L4-CL) is essential in the mitochondrial membrane for maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential, structural integrity of electron transport chain complexes and mitochondrial cristae architecture. Cardiolipin is a major constituent of inner mitochondrial membranes, and the major effects of the aberrant gene are on muscular tissues. Cardiac and skeletal manifestations of Barth syndrome are thought to result from impaired formation of respiratory chain super-complexes. TAZ mutations decrease L4-CL and increase intermediate species of MLCL, resulting in a marked increase in the MLCL : L4-CL ratio, which provides a highly sensitive and specific biochemical test for Barth syndrome. Barth syndrome is characterised by many gene mutations and profound phenotypic variability between affected patients within families and those in different families. The disease carries many risks and problems for its sufferers, as well as major healthcare costs. Almost one-third (30%) of living UK patients have undergone cardiac transplantation. Several patients who have died due to cardiac rejection or post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease had previously undergone cardiac transplantation. Other patients who have died deteriorated too fast to undergo transplantation or died of complications while awaiting transplantation. Neutropenia is another life-threatening issue. Two-thirds of UK patients are treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor by subcutaneous injection. Managing neutropenia in this disease is challenging, since patients have highly variable neutrophil counts, which prevents administration of a consistent daily dose and requires repeated blood counts and physician oversight. Exercise intolerance, lethargy and fatigue are universal, interfering with daily life, schoolwork and play and often necessitating use of a wheelchair. Patients cannot perform strenuous or demanding jobs. Many have major feeding problems from infancy through to adult life; for example, requiring feeding via gastrostomies. There can be rapid deterioration during periods of stable health despite expert medical care. Ventricular arrhythmia (tachycardia or fibrillation) affects 10% of adolescents and can cause sudden cardiac death at any time. There are no specific treatments for Barth syndrome. There is no evidence that standard medications for cardiomyopathy ameliorate long-term poor outcomes. Treatment is multidisciplinary and currently limited to treating intercurrent bacterial infections, bone marrow support, physiotherapy, nutritional support, management of heart failure and arrhythmia, and consideration for heart transplantation. Experiments using lymphoblasts from patients with Barth syndrome show that either bezafibrate or resveratrol can partially normalise the deranged cardiolipin ratio. This may be important, since some patients with Barth syndrome who lack neutropenia and tend to have good exercise tolerance have cardiolipin ratios intermediate between those of typical patients and normal individuals. Bezafibrate also improved left ventricular function and showed other benefits at supraphysiological doses in a TAZ knockdown mouse model. This trial was motivated by the need for disease-specific therapy to prevent morbidity, mortality, psychological distress, and disruption of quality of life (QoL) in affected patients and their families. An effective therapy also has the potential to generate savings for the NHS. Bezafibrate is a lipid-lowering drug used in adults and children, with a good safety record in long-term use. These characteristics made it a candidate for investigation. Bezafibrate has been reported to significantly ameliorate a mitochondrial myopathy in adults and shown promising results in several animal/human cellular models of mitochondrial disease. Several of the laboratory assays and clinical investigations proposed in this study were also considered potentially important beyond the scope of this specific study, to assess associations between genotype and phenotype and for future evaluations of therapies in Barth syndrome. Objectives Estimate the effect on clinical, biochemical and QoL outcome measures of bezafibrate compared to placebo. Investigate whether clinical improvements parallel in vitro changes in cardiolipin ratio and mitochondrial morphology in each participant’s cells when cultured with bezafibrate. Investigate whether clinical improvements and culture findings with bezafibrate parallel in vitro changes in each participant’s cells when exposed to resveratrol in laboratory culture. Describe the most feasible methods and standardised outcome measures for future trials. Describe features of the research infrastructure which optimised recruitment, retention and communication with participants and families. Describe participants’ and their families’ perceptions of research and important potential barriers to participation. Methods Study design and participants CARDIOlipin MANipulation trial (CARDIOMAN) was a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover randomised trial. Treatment was given in two 15-week periods with a minimum of 1 month’s washout period between these when no treatment was given. Twenty-six males and one female with the disease were alive in the UK when the trial was designed. Males aged ≥ 6 years in the UK diagnosed with Barth syndrome were eligible. Exclusion criteria were: hypersensitivity to bezafibrate or component of the investigational medicinal product (IMP), photoallergic or phototoxic reaction to fibrate, unstable cardiac condition, cardiac chamber shortening fraction < 25% or significant decrease in shortening fraction in the preceding year, atrial or ventricular arrhythmia not stabilised by treatment, inability to swallow the IMP, hepatic dysfunction, renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 90 ml/min), gallbladder disease, recent unspecified significant deterioration in general health, prisoners and adults lacking capacity to provide informed consent. Randomisation and masking Participants were randomised to receive either bezafibrate then placebo, or the reverse order. Allocations were generated in advance by the Bristol Trials Centre and provided to the trial pharmacy which dispensed the IMP. All investigators, members of the research team (apart from pharmacy) and participants remained blind to treatment allocation. Intervention and procedures The intervention IMP was bezafibrate taken orally as 100-mg tablets. Children aged 6–9 years started on 100 mg once daily for the first 4 weeks and, if well tolerated, increased to 100 mg twice daily for the remaining 11 weeks. Children aged 10–17 years started on 200 mg once daily for the first 4 weeks and, if well tolerated, increased to 200 mg twice daily for the remaining 11 weeks. Adults (≥ 18 years) took 200 mg twice daily throughout. The comparator IMP was placebo taken orally as visually identical tablets and manufactured to be as similar as possible in taste and smell to the intervention. The IMP was prescribed at the start of the first period and again at the end of the first period for the second period. Outcomes All in vivo outcomes except magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were assessed three times: at baseline and in the final week of each treatment phase. The primary outcome measure was peak oxygen consumption on bicycle ergometry [peak volume of oxygen (VO2)]. Secondary outcomes were: MLCL/L4-CL ratio and cardiolipin profile in blood cells; phosphocreatine (PCr)/adenosine 5’ triphosphate (ATP) ratio in cardiac muscle on 31P MRS; skeletal muscle oxidative function/on 31P MRS; QoL [age-appropriate Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQLTM) questionnaires]; absolute neutrophil count; amino acid expression (serum arginine and cysteine); cardiac function [left and right ventricular function: left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF%), right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF%); and 2-D longitudinal and circumferential strain at rest, peak exercise and after recovery]; mitochondrial size and number in lymphocytes; mitochondrial area in lymphocytes and as a proportion of cytoplasm area; mitochondrial function and cristae organisation in lymphocytes/neutrophils; arrhythmia profile from 12-lead electrocardiogram at rest and during exercise. Qualitative research methods explored participants’ and families’ experiences of the different interventions. Adverse events Serious adverse events (SAEs) and non-serious adverse events (AEs) were collected from participants from the time of consent until 1 month after the final period. Participants’ general practitioners were asked to inform the research team of suspected AEs. Participants were asked questions about SAEs/AEs at each research clinic visit and in monthly phone calls, including during the washout period. SAEs were reviewed by the Chief Investigator, who decided whether the SAE was related to bezafibrate. Statistical analysis A total of 20 males aged ≥ 6 years were potentially eligible. The sample size was dictated by the number of eligible boys willing to take part. The primary analysis estimated the difference in mean peak VO2 between placebo and bezafibrate periods (two-tailed 5% significance level). A sample size of 12 participants allowed the trial to detect a difference of 0.90 (within subject) standard deviations with 80% power. The statistical analysis plan (SAP) prespecified that all analyses should be conducted according to the intention-to-treat (ITT) principle. The ITT population comprised all participants and periods, according to the randomised allocations. The safety population comprised all randomised participants, according to the treatment received in each period, who received at least one dose of IMP. All statistical tests were two-sided and used a 5% significance level, except for interactions that used a 10% significance level. Treatment effects were estimated with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). No formal adjustment was made for multiple testing. The treatment effect for the primary outcome was analysed using mixed linear regression models, adjusting for period (fixed effect; exploring interactions where necessary) and participants (random effects). Model assumptions were tested using standard methods, and the carry-over effect was estimated by including treatment order. Treatment effects for continuously scaled secondary outcomes (prespecified in the SAP) were estimated and tested using the same methods. Results There was no statistically significant difference between bezafibrate and placebo in peak VO2, which was 0.66 ml/kg/min lower (95% CI −2.34 to 1.03; p = 0.43) with bezafibrate. There was a borderline statistically significant increase in LVEF% using echocardiography (3.72%, 95% CI −0.26% to 7.69%; p = 0.065) but no evidence of a difference when using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (0.15%, 95% CI −3.21% to 3.51%; p = 0.926). There was also no difference for RVEF% between bezafibrate and placebo (0.32, 95% CI −2.32 to 2.96; p = 0.801). Longitudinal and circumferential strain at rest were better (lower) with bezafibrate than with placebo; differences were –1.67 (95% CI −3.11 to −0.22; p = 0.026) and −2.72 (95% CI −5.03 to −0.40; p = 0.024) respectively. There was no difference in diastolic ratio at rest between bezafibrate and placebo, and no differences in strain or diastolic ratio at peak exercise or after 2 minutes’ recovery. All participants had sinus rhythm at rest and during exercise for all three time points. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy was only performed after the second period for 10 participants. PCr/ATP ratio in cardiac muscle was not collected. Cross-sectionally (five vs. five participants), MRS appeared to increase Tau and reduce Qmax parameters with bezafibrate compared to placebo. Monolysocardiolipin/L4-CL ratio did not differ between bezafibrate and placebo but deteriorated in the second period (20% higher, 95% CI 3% to 40%; p = 0.024). Neutrophil count also showed no difference between bezafibrate and placebo but increased in the second period (2.26, 95% CI 0.08 to 4.45; p = 0.043). Plasma cysteine increased with bezafibrate (32% higher, 95% CI 8% to 62%; p = 0.001) but plasma arginine did not (25% higher, 95% CI −10% to 72%; p = 0.180). Mitochondrial outcomes on blood samples did not show marked differences and were not formally compared. Quality-of-life scores were transformed to a 0–100 scale (higher being better). Bezafibrate had no effect on core (−3.41, 95% CI −8.67 to 1.86; p = 0.192) or fatigue (1.71, 95% CI −6.28 to 9.71; p = 0.659) QoL scores. Emerging themes identified in qualitative interviews were classified as overarching, related to lived experience with Barth syndrome, and trial participation and conduct. Participants and families were pleased to take part in the trial, viewing participation as ‘giving back’ to the medical community. No participant withdrew, and the trial was not perceived to be too onerous for families. Participating in the research gave both individuals and families a sense of responsibility for their condition, partly driven by appreciation for the Barth Syndrome Service and staff expertise. Monolysocardiolipin/L4-CL ratio in vitro was estimated from samples of cells incubated with control, bezafibrate or resveratrol. Each drug reduced the MLCL/L4-CL ratio, largely by increasing intermediate cardiolipin species, and more so with resveratrol than with bezafibrate. Ratios were nevertheless profoundly abnormal in comparison to patients with intermediate Barth phenotypes. Discussion Main findings: study results There was no clinically important or statistically significant improvement in peak VO2 with bezafibrate compared to placebo. There were inconsistent findings for LVEF% by method of measurement; echocardiography showed a borderline improvement that cardiac MRI did not demonstrate. Longitudinal and circumferential strain measurements were better at rest with bezafibrate, but not at peak exercise. There were no clinically important or statistically significant improvements in core or fatigue QoL domains. Plasma cysteine was significantly improved with bezafibrate treatment. Plasma arginine also increased but not significantly. Neutrophil count was unaffected and there was no significant change in cardiolipin ratio in participants’ blood with bezafibrate. There were no significant period effects except for MLCL/L4-CL ratio and neutrophil count, both increased in the second period. In vitro incubation of Epstein–Barr virus-transformed patient lymphoblasts with either bezafibrate or resveratrol resulted in improved MLCL/L4-CL ratios, an effect that was more profound with resveratrol. Treatment with this drug also resulted in a more obvious increase in intermediate MLCL species. Strengths and limitations Strengths of the trial are: randomisation and placebo blinding; crossover design; excellent retention; completeness of the data, good adherence and IMP tolerance. There were several limitations. The sample size (outside our control) was very small, and interpretation of effects for many secondary outcomes was challenging. Longer treatment duration or a higher bezafibrate dose might have produced better outcomes. Bezafibrate may have induced adverse reactions in some participants, inadvertently causing unblinding. The group of participants randomised to receive bezafibrate first was older than the group randomised to the opposite order, which may explain period effects. The electron microscopic and mitochondrial assessments proved problematic and were not completed in vitro. Measurements of mitochondrial content and membrane potential were highly variable. Amino acid levels were not assayed after fasting. Echocardiography images during exercise testing were often suboptimal. Lessons for the future Magnetic resonance spectroscopy in children is still exploratory, and protocols need to be better validated, but it is considered very promising as a potential objective functional outcome. Cardiolipin profile is not a good outcome for research, although it is appropriate for diagnosis because the Barth cardiolipin profile is so extremely different from a normal profile. Electron microscopy measurements of mitochondria should not be considered as outcomes in future trials. Peak VO2 should be the preferred current primary outcome because it is resistant to bias compared to other functional outcomes. Conclusion The trial did not show a significant treatment effect for the primary outcome, peak VO2. Some secondary outcomes such as systolic function measured by echocardiography and amino acid levels provided some evidence of benefit. The trial provided insights about trial methods and conduct in the context of a very rare paediatric disease that should inform future studies. Abstract: Abstract Originally designed as anti-hyperglycemic drugs, Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1Ra) and Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have demonstrated protective cardiovascular effects, with significant impact on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite several mechanisms have been proposed, the exact pathophysiology behind these effects is not yet fully understood. Cardiovascular imaging is key for the evaluation of diabetic patients, with an established role from the identification of early subclinical changes to long-term follow up and prognostic assessment. Among the different imaging modalities, CMR may have a key-role being the gold standard for volumes and function assessment and having the unique ability to provide tissue characterization. Novel techniques are also implementing the possibility to evaluate cardiac metabolism through CMR and thereby further increasing the potential role of the modality in this context. Aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of changes in CMR parameters and novel CMR techniques applied in both pre-clinical and clinical studies evaluating the effects of SGLT2i and GLP-1Ra, and their potential role in better understanding the underlying CV mechanisms of these drugs.

Abstract: La selección de la estrategia de control para un motor síncrono de imanes permanentes o PMSM (del inglés Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) depende sus aspectos constructivos, aplicación específica y del costo de implementación de dicha estrategia. Por ello, resulta de interés el estudio de diferentes alternativas de control considerando a su impacto sobre variables críticas tales como la potencia máxima desarrollada y el rendimiento del motor. Este artículo presenta el análisis teórico y la validación experimental de un modelo para la estimación del desempeño de un PMSM al ser controlado con dos estrategias diferentes, específicamente, control vectorial por campo orientado y control Seis-Pulsos. Se estudian las ecuaciones que modelan las pérdidas del motor y se estiman para un conjunto de puntos de operación, los cuales son contrastados con los resultados obtenidos de los ensayos experimentales en los que se evalúan los mapas de eficiencia de la máquina para las dos estrategias de control estudiadas. Los resultados del modelo muestran una adecuada correlación cuando es ajustado con datos del ensayo. Por último se propone una aproximación simplificada para estimar la degradación de la eficiencia en el punto nominal de operación.

Abstract: We present the third data release of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, GDR3. The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The GDR3 catalogue contains the same source list, celestial positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and broad band photometry in the G, G$_{BP}$, and G$_{RP}$ pass-bands already present in the Early Third Data Release. Abstract: The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been routinely observing Solar System objects (SSOs) since the beginning of its operations in August 2014. The Gaia data release three (DR3) includes, for the first time, the mean reflectance spectra of a selected sample of 60 518 SSOs, primarily asteroids, observed between August 5, 2014, and May 28, 2017. Each reflectance spectrum was derived from measurements obtained by means of the Blue and Red photometers (BP/RP), which were binned in 16 discrete wavelength bands. We describe the processing of the Gaia spectral data of SSOs, explaining both the criteria used to select the subset of asteroid spectra published in Gaia DR3, and the different steps of our internal validation procedures. In order to further assess the quality of Gaia SSO reflectance spectra, we carried out external validation against SSO reflectance spectra obtained from ground-based and space-borne telescopes and available in the literature. For each selected SSO, an epoch reflectance was computed by dividing the calibrated spectrum observed by the BP/RP at each transit on the focal plane by the mean spectrum of a solar analogue. The latter was obtained by averaging the Gaia spectral measurements of a selected sample of stars known to have very similar spectra to that of the Sun. Finally, a mean of the epoch reflectance spectra was calculated in 16 spectral bands for each SSO. The agreement between Gaia mean reflectance spectra and those available in the literature is good for bright SSOs, regardless of their taxonomic spectral class. We identify an increase in the spectral slope of S-type SSOs with increasing phase angle. Moreover, we show that the spectral slope increases and the depth of the 1 um absorption band decreases for increasing ages of S-type asteroid families., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract: In this paper we develop a differential astrometric framework that is appropriate for a scanning space satellite such as Gaia. We apply it to the first of the GAREQ fields, which is the fruit of dedicated efforts within the Gaia project focused on measuring the relativistic deflection of light close to Jupiter's limb. This provides a preliminary assessment of: a) the observability of the relativistic deflection of light close to Jupiter, and, b) Gaia's astrometric capabilities under extremely difficult conditions such as those around a bright extended object. Inputs to our differential astrometric model are the CCD transit times as measured by the IDU system, transformed to field angles via AGIS geometric calibrations, and the commanded/nominal spacecraft attitude. [abridged] To illustrate the model we analyze Gaia astrometric measurements after their calibration through the latest cyclic EDR3/DR3 processing of the GAREQ event of Feb 2017. We use observations of the closest bright target star successfully observed several times by Gaia in close proximity to Jupiter and surrounding reference stars brighter than G<13 mag in transits leading up to the time of closest approach and on subsequent transits. The relativistic deflection signal is detected with a S/N of 50 at closest approach by the target star. This signal is the combined effect due to Jupiter and the Sun, mainly dominated by Jupiter's monopole, demonstrating Gaia's scientific performance under extreme observational conditions. It is an unprecedented detection for the following reasons: a) closest ever to Jupiter's limb (~7") in the optical, and, b) highest S/N at any wavelength. Finally, this work sets the stage for investigations into disentangling the relativistic quadrupole deflection due to Jupiter with future Gaia astrometric measurements., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: With the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. Abstract: The third Gaia data release provides photometric time series covering 34 months for about 10 million stars. For many of those stars, a characterisation in Fourier space and their variability classification are also provided. This paper focuses on intermediate- to high-mass (IHM) main sequence pulsators M >= 1.3 Msun) of spectral types O, B, A, or F, known as beta Cep, slowly pulsating B (SPB), delta Sct, and gamma Dor stars. These stars are often multi-periodic and display low amplitudes, making them challenging targets to analyse with sparse time series. All datasets used in this analysis are part of the Gaia DR3 data release. The photometric time series were used to perform a Fourier analysis, while the global astrophysical parameters necessary for the empirical instability strips were taken from the Gaia DR3 gspphot tables, and the vsini data were taken from the Gaia DR3 esphs tables. We show that for nearby OBAF-type pulsators, the Gaia DR3 data are precise and accurate enough to pinpoint them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We find empirical instability strips covering broader regions than theoretically predicted. In particular, our study reveals the presence of fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators outside the strips, as well as the co-existence of rotationally modulated variables inside the strips as reported before in the literature. We derive an extensive period-luminosity relation for delta Sct stars and provide evidence that the relation features different regimes depending on the oscillation period. Finally, we demonstrate how stellar rotation attenuates the amplitude of the dominant oscillation mode of delta Sct stars.

Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. Abstract: The Gaia Galactic survey mission is designed and optimized to obtain astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy of nearly two billion stars in our Galaxy. Yet as an all-sky multi-epoch survey, Gaia also observes several million extragalactic objects down to a magnitude of G~21 mag. Due to the nature of the Gaia onboard selection algorithms, these are mostly point-source-like objects. Using data provided by the satellite, we have identified quasar and galaxy candidates via supervised machine learning methods, and estimate their redshifts using the low resolution BP/RP spectra. We further characterise the surface brightness profiles of host galaxies of quasars and of galaxies from pre-defined input lists. Here we give an overview of the processing of extragalactic objects, describe the data products in Gaia DR3, and analyse their properties. Two integrated tables contain the main results for a high completeness, but low purity (50-70%), set of 6.6 million candidate quasars and 4.8 million candidate galaxies. We provide queries that select purer sub-samples of these containing 1.9 million probable quasars and 2.9 million probable galaxies (both 95% purity). We also use high quality BP/RP spectra of 43 thousand high probability quasars over the redshift range 0.05-4.36 to construct a composite quasar spectrum spanning restframe wavelengths from 72-100 nm., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Abstract: The Gaia DR3 Catalogue contains for the first time about eight hundred thousand solutions with either orbital elements or trend parameters for astrometric, spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries, and combinations of them. This paper aims to illustrate the huge potential of this large non-single star catalogue. Using the orbital solutions together with models of the binaries, a catalogue of tens of thousands of stellar masses, or lower limits, partly together with consistent flux ratios, has been built. Properties concerning the completeness of the binary catalogues are discussed, statistical features of the orbital elements are explained and a comparison with other catalogues is performed. Illustrative applications are proposed for binaries across the H-R diagram. The binarity is studied in the RGB/AGB and a search for genuine SB1 among long-period variables is performed. The discovery of new EL CVn systems illustrates the potential of combining variability and binarity catalogues. Potential compact object companions are presented, mainly white dwarf companions or double degenerates, but one candidate neutron star is also presented. Towards the bottom of the main sequence, the orbits of previously-suspected binary ultracool dwarfs are determined and new candidate binaries are discovered. The long awaited contribution of Gaia to the analysis of the substellar regime shows the brown dwarf desert around solar-type stars using true, rather than minimum, masses, and provides new important constraints on the occurrence rates of substellar companions to M dwarfs. Several dozen new exoplanets are proposed, including two with validated orbital solutions and one super-Jupiter orbiting a white dwarf, all being candidates requiring confirmation. Abstract: Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their [alpha/Fe] ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. Abstract: Crowding effects significantly influence the phase behavior and the structural and dynamic properties of the concentrated protein mixtures present in the cytoplasm of cells or in the blood serum. This poses enormous difficulties for our theoretical understanding and our ability to predict the behavior of these systems. While the use of course grained colloid-inspired models allows us to reproduce the key physical solution properties of concentrated monodisperse solutions of individual proteins, we lack corresponding theories for complex polydisperse mixtures. Here, we test the applicability of simple mixing rules in order to predict solution properties of protein mixtures. We use binary mixtures of the well-characterized bovine eye lens proteins α and γB crystallin as model systems. Combining microrheology with static and dynamic scattering techniques and observations of the phase diagram for liquid–liquid phase separation, we show that reasonably accurate descriptions are possible for macroscopic and mesoscopic signatures, while information on the length scale of the individual protein size requires more information on cross-component interaction.

36. Feral frogs, native newts, and chemical cues: identifying threats from and management opportunities for invasive African Clawed Frogs in Washington state

Abstract: Invasive species threaten biodiversity globally. Amphibians are one of the most threatened vertebrate taxa and are particularly sensitive to invasive species, including other amphibians. African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) are native to Southern Africa but have subsequently become invasive on multiple continents—including multiple parts of North America—due to releases from the pet and biomedical trades. Despite their prevalence as a global invader, the impact of X. laevis remains understudied. This includes the Pacific Northwest of the USA, which now hosts multiple expanding X. laevis populations. For many amphibians, chemical cues communicate important information, including the presence of predators. Here, we tested the role chemical cues may play in mediating interactions between feral X. laevis and native amphibians in the Pacific Northwest. We tested whether native red-legged frog (Rana aurora) tadpoles display an antipredator response to non-native frog (X. laevis) or native newt (rough-skinned newts, Taricha granulosa) predator chemical stimuli. We found that R. aurora tadpoles exhibited pronounced anti-predator responses when exposed to chemical cues from T. granulosa but did not display anti-predator response to invasive X. laevis chemical cues. We also began experimentally testing whether T. granulosa—which produce a powerful neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX)—may elicit an anti-predator response in X. laevis, that could serve to deter co-occupation. However, our short-duration experiments found that X. laevis were attracted to newt chemical stimuli rather than deterred. Our findings show that X. laevis likely poses a threat to native amphibians, and that these native species may also be particularly vulnerable to this invasive predator, compared to native predators, because toxic native newts may not limit X. laevis invasions. Our research provides some of the first indications that native Pacific Northwest species may be threatened by feral X. laevis and provides a foundation for future experiments testing potential management techniques for X. laevis.

Abstract: Gaia-CRF3 is the celestial reference frame for positions and proper motions in the third release of data from the Gaia mission, Gaia DR3 (and for the early third release, Gaia EDR3, which contains identical astrometric results). The reference frame is defined by the positions and proper motions at epoch 2016.0 for a specific set of extragalactic sources in the (E)DR3 catalogue. We describe the construction of Gaia-CRF3, and its properties in terms of the distributions in magnitude, colour, and astrometric quality. Compact extragalactic sources in Gaia DR3 were identified by positional cross-matching with 17 external catalogues of quasars (QSO) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), followed by astrometric filtering designed to remove stellar contaminants. Selecting a clean sample was favoured over including a higher number of extragalactic sources. For the final sample, the random and systematic errors in the proper motions are analysed, as well as the radio-optical offsets in position for sources in the third realisation of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF3). The Gaia-CRF3 comprises about 1.6 million QSO-like sources, of which 1.2 million have five-parameter astrometric solutions in Gaia DR3 and 0.4 million have six-parameter solutions. The sources span the magnitude range G = 13 to 21 with a peak density at 20.6 mag, at which the typical positional uncertainty is about 1 mas. The proper motions show systematic errors on the level of 12 ${\mu}$as yr${}^{-1}$ on angular scales greater than 15 deg. For the 3142 optical counterparts of ICRF3 sources in the S/X frequency bands, the median offset from the radio positions is about 0.5 mas, but exceeds 4 mas in either coordinate for 127 sources. We outline the future of the Gaia-CRF in the next Gaia data releases.

Abstract: Relativistic models of light propagation adopted for high-precision astrometry are based on the parametrised post-Newtonian formalism, which provides a framework for examining the effects of a hypothetical violation of general relativity on astrometric data. Astrometric observations are strongly affected by the post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ describing the strength of gravitational light deflection. We study both analytically and numerically how a deviation in the PPN parameter $\gamma$ from unity, which is the value predicted by general relativity, affects the parallax estimations in Gaia-like astrometry. Changes in the observable quantities produced by a small variation in PPN $\gamma$ were calculated analytically. We then considered how such variations of the observables are reflected in the parallax estimations, and we performed numerical simulations to check the theoretical predictions. A variation in the PPN $\gamma$ results in a global shift of parallaxes and we present a formula describing the parallax bias in terms of the satellite barycentric distance, the angle between the spin axis and the direction to the Sun, and the PPN $\gamma$ uncertainty. Numerical simulations of the astrometric solutions confirm the theoretical result. The up-to-date estimation of PPN $\gamma$ suggests that a corresponding contribution to the Gaia parallax zero point unlikely exceeds 0.2 $\mu$as. The numerical simulations indicate that the parallax shift is strongly dependent on ecliptic latitude. It is argued that this effect is due to an asymmetry in the Gaia scanning law and this conclusion is fully validated by additional simulations with a reversed direction of the precession of the spin axis around the direction to the Sun., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Background: Starting from March 2020 until December 2021, different phases of Covid-19 pandemic have been identified in Italy, with several containing/lifting measures progressively enforced by the National government. In the present study, we investigate the change in occupational risk during the subsequent pandemic phases and we propose an estimate of the incidence of the cases by economic sector, based on the analysis of insurance claims for compensation for Covid-19. Methods: Covid-19 epidemiological data available for the general population and injury claims of workers covered by the Italian public insurance system in 2020–2021 were analyzed. Monthly Incidence Rate of Covid-19 compensation claims per 100,000 workers (MIRw) was calculated by the economic sector and compared with the same indicator for general population in different pandemic periods. Results: The distribution of Covid-19 MIRw by sector significantly changed during the pandemic related to both the strength of different waves and the mitigation/lifting strategies enforced. The level of occupational fraction was very high at the beginning phase of the pandemic, decreasing to 5% at the end of 2021. Healthcare and related services were continuously hit but the incidence was significantly decreasing in 2021 in all sectors, except for postal and courier activities in transportation and storage enterprises. Conclusion: The analysis of compensation claim data allowed to identify time trends for infection risk in different working sectors. The claim rates were highest for human health and social work activities but the distribution of risk among sectors was clearly influenced by the different stages of the pandemic.

Pur appartenendo a due campi semantici affini, la prima delle due espressioni si riferisce all’insieme di risorse (personali e collettive), tools, app ed accorgimenti tecnico-regolativi, ideati da chi progetta il web ed i suoi contenuti, per far sì che le persone navighino nel web secondo i principi di sicurezza e benessere; la seconda si centra maggiormente sull’azione diretta delle persone nel digitale e chiama in causa le capacità critiche e riflessive dei singoli nel muoversi in qualsiasi tipo di ambiente, reale o virtuale che sia. Il benessere digitale è soprattutto frutto del lavoro di chi ha il compito di rendere l’esperienza di fruizione del virtuale il più confortevole possibile. Il benessere nel digitale è un atto volitivo, conoscitivo ed euristico durante il quale, a partire dall’identificazione dei nostri bisogni e desideri, proviamo a trovare una loro soddisfazione nel digitale. Se da un lato l’applicazione dei principi dell’ergonomia alla costruzione degli spazi digitali risulta fondamentale per promuovere il benessere digitale, dall’altra esistono diversi tipi di App che propongono ai fruitori esperienze di benessere variamente declinate. Risulta, comunque, di fondamentale importanza coniugare lo sviluppo di competenze personali di natura affettiva e cognitiva con la costruzione di habitat digitali centrati sulla persona al fine di garantire il Ben-Essere delle persone che, in maniera parziale o totale, abitano il virtuale.

Abstract: Lo scopo di questa mini review è quello di dare una definizione aggiornata di Ecopsicologia, come disciplina emergente che si concentra sull'indagine delle dinamiche psicologiche, emotive e cognitive che definiscono la nostra relazione con il mondo naturale, evidenziando come questa relazione influenzi non solo il benessere individuale, ma anche la salute del Pianeta e riconoscendo come l’essere umano sia inestricabilmente legato all’ecosistema terrestre. Inoltre si intende fornire una descrizione delle principali tappe storiche e degli attori coinvolti nello sviluppo di questa materia, con particolare attenzione all’evoluzione della International Ecopsychology Society - IES e al panorama accademico all’interno del quale, in Italia e nel Mondo, avviene il dibattito in merito all’Ecopsicologia. Il tentativo è quello di tracciare la traiettoria che nel corso del tempo questa branca, trasversale a diverse discipline, sta prendendo, con una particolare attenzione all’Ecopsicoterapia, che ne costituisce l’applicazione psicoterapeutica, e alla sua connessione con la fenomenologia e le psicoterapie umanistiche. Si procede quindi alla descrizione di concetti come quello di “legame naturale”, e agli studi clinici e alle metanalisi condotte da studiosi di tutto il mondo, che indicano l'esito positivo complessivo degli interventi terapeutici dell’ecoterapia: la natura che orienta alla crescita, riflette qualità sane che evocano una sintonia interna con un cambiamento e forniscono una prospettiva più estesa e interconnessa sulla vita e su sé stessi.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The extent to which health care systems have adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide necessary cardiac diagnostic services is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the pandemic on cardiac testing practices, volumes and types of diagnostic services, and perceived psychological stress to health care providers worldwide. METHODS: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations from baseline in cardiovascular diagnostic care at the pandemics onset and 1 year later. Multivariable regression was used to determine factors associated with procedure volume recovery. RESULTS: Surveys were submitted from 669 centers in 107 countries. Worldwide reduction in cardiac procedure volumes of 64% from March 2019 to April 2020 recovered by April 2021 in high- and upper middle-income countries (recovery rates of 108% and 99%) but remained depressed in lower middle- and low-income countries (46% and 30% recovery). Although stress testing was used 12% less frequently in 2021 than in 2019, coronary computed tomographic angiography was used 14% more, a trend also seen for other advanced cardiac imaging modalities (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance; 22%-25% increases). Pandemic-related psychological stress was estimated to have affected nearly 40% of staff, impacting patient care at 78% of sites. In multivariable regression, only lower-income status and physicians psychological stress were significant in predicting recovery of cardiac testing. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac diagnostic testing has yet to recover to prepandemic levels in lower-income countries. Worldwide, the decrease in standard stress testing is offset by greater use of advanced cardiac imaging modalities. Pandemic-related psychological stress among providers is widespread and associated with poor recovery of cardiac testing.

Abstract: A pandemia gerou impactos sociais e econômicos, como o trabalho informal dos que se ocupam do serviço de café de rua, ampliado na retomada pós isolamento. O artigo analisa as significações construídas pelas instalações do serviço nas ruas de São Paulo (SP) e Vitória (ES), enquanto manifestações do empreendedorismo por necessidade. O corpus foi coletado em dias úteis, no início das manhãs, em diversos pontos das capitais. A semiótica discursiva sustenta a análise e seu método permitiu traçar isotopias conectoras de figuras e temas. Os resultados apontam para a comunicação dos sentidos da informalidade, casualidade e familiaridade, marcados pela presença feminina, pela autonomia imposta aos sujeitos produtor/vendedor e consumidor e pela conexão entre a energia dada pela bebida e o trabalho. Esses significados vêm embebidos no risco vivido por esses sujeitos, aconchegados entre si e alijados da proteção de políticas públicas de trabalho, condições sanitárias, serviços de transporte e saúde.

Abstract: The Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) is, at present, the largest deep underground laboratory in operation for astroparticle physics and rare event research. The LNGS was created to carry out this research exploiting an overburden of 1,400 m of rock to reduce the flux of muons from cosmic rays. Operating an underground laboratory and its facilities implies a high level of risk. To mitigate risks at the LNGS, a crucial aspect is represented by the evacuation of people from an underground environment during emergencies. The connection between the underground facilities and the outside infrastructure is limited, and the intervention by rescue teams is complicated. This paper reports the study of an adaptive evacuation system to improve the evacuation performance in underground laboratories. The system proposed is composed of a combination of passive, dynamic, and adaptive signage that is able to adapt itself to lead the laboratory occupants to the safe location for evacuation (assembly point). The system collects information from all safety plants, and the data are processed using a customized path-finding algorithm. In the computational algorithm, the underground laboratory is represented as a grid, and the customized path-finding algorithm discovers all available paths to reach the identified evacuation assembly point.

Abstract: Extreme weather events are predicted to increase as a result of climate change, yet amphibian responses to extreme disturbance events remain understudied, especially in the Neotropics. Recently, an unprecedented windstorm within a protected Costa Rican rainforest opened large light gaps in sites where we have studied behavioral responses of diurnal strawberry poison frogs (Oophaga pumilio) to ultraviolet radiation for nearly two decades. Previous studies demonstrate that O. pumilio selects and defends perches where ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) is relatively low, likely because of the lethal and sublethal effects of UV-B. In this natural experiment, we quantified disturbance to O. pumilio habitat, surveyed for the presence of O. pumilio in both high-disturbance and low-disturbance areas of the forest, and assessed UV-B levels and perch selection behavior in both disturbance levels. Fewer frogs were detected in high-disturbance habitat than in low-disturbance habitat. In general, frogs were found vocalizing at perches in both disturbance levels, and in both cases, in significantly lower UV-B levels relative to ambient adjacent surroundings. However, frogs at perches in high-disturbance areas were exposed to UV-B levels nearly 10 times greater than males at perches in low-disturbance areas. Thus, behavioral avoidance of UV-B may not reduce the risks associated with elevated exposure under these novel conditions, and similarly, if future climate and human-driven land-use change lead to sustained analogous environments.
