Abstract

Magnetic nanoparticles enhanced microwave imaging has a great potential in breast cancer diagnosis. In fact, thanks to the non-magnetic nature of human issues, it would allow high specificity diagnosis already at early stages. To meet this goal, a crucial requirement is to design and built an imaging device free of spurious magnetic effects, which could hide the useful signal due to the magnetic nanoparticles targeted to the tumor or induce false positives. In particular, spurious effect -free measurements must be ensured up to the precision required to gather the very low useful signal. In this communication, we report the preliminary results on an investigation aimed to assess the origin of the possible spurious magnetic signals, in order to devise effective actions for their elimination.

Abstract

This paper concerns with a recently proposed approach of blind focused microwave hyperthermia, exploiting magnetic nanoparticles as contrast agents, and aims at numerically assessing the approach in the clinically relevant case of the treatment of neck tumors. To this respect, a realistic scheme, inspired by the prototypal system called Hypercollar, has been adopted. The well-known Zubal phantom has been exploited as human model. The numerical results show that the proposed approach works well also in a realistic and complex situations like the one considered in this study.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is twofold. First, why and how exploitation of muitifrequency information is of great usefulness in inverse scattering problems is discussed. Second, three different solution strategies, all based on a recently introduced approach, are presented, discussed, and compared in the actual case of noise affected data in the two-dimensional (2-D) scalar case. The first one is a (nonlinear) frequency-hopping technique, which favorably compares with approaches of the same kind that use linear inversion steps. As a second approach, the contemporary use of the different frequencies data is considered. Contrary to common assumptions, it is shown that such an approach may perform better than the previous one, the different performances between the two being dictated by the spatial frequency content of the unknown contrast. Finally, a hybrid and, to the best of our knowledge, novel strategy, which exploits the advantages of the two previous ones, is introduced and discussed. Abstract

The aim of the present work is to investigate the interaction mechanisms between the electromagnetic field and “modified” double-helical DNA molecules as recently proposed in literature. To this end a family of applicators has been developped in order to expose the biomolecules to electromagnetic fields (300 MHz - 2.5 GHz) and to follow, simultaneously, their conformational changes induced by the radiation.

Abstract

The diagnosis of the faulty elements of a planar array from noisy far-field power pattern data is considered in the case of 'on-off' faults. The possible ambiguities of the solutions are considered both in the theoretical and practical sense and are shown to be intrinsically less relevant than in the widely studied continuous case. The probability of the occurrence of the practical ambiguities is inferred from a number of numerical examples and is shown to be negligible in all cases of interest. An effective algorithm is presented here based on an intersection set finding approach and involving the minimization of a suitable objective functional. The global minimization of the functional has been successfully performed by applying a properly modified genetic algorithm. A number of numerical examples shows the effectiveness of the approach whose computational complexity essentially increases linearly with the array size.
