Exploitation of ores has surely represented a risk for contamination of environmental matrices for a long time. This paper reports the results of a study concerning soil contamination by heavy metals at Libiola abandoned copper mine (Italy). This deposit has surely got special importance in Italy because of its historical, environmental and mining features. From a historical viewpoint, Libiola deposit was known since Copper Age, with maximum exploitation at the end of the 19th century. Our investigation plan was elaborated in order to characterize the environmental matrices there, and it provided for inspection of the zones (included in the valley of Gromolo stream) which, according to our preliminary studies and according to literature, could be most affected by past mining activity. Within our selected zones, some soils (even cultivated) were collected in order to check their contamination by heavy metals. Results from the analysis of the collected soil samples showed that the content of heavy metals often exceeds limits provided by the Italian Law 152/06. The knowledge of situation concerning pollution can give useful indications about the influence of mining activities on the surrounding environment, and it can also be valid support in order to organize an optimal future use of the studied mining area, which has been abandoned since its closure (1962). During the 1960s, fossil beds characterized by a tropical-sea malacofauna were discovered by G. Ruggieri and G. Buccheri in the Island of Ustica, on the southern slope of Falconiera hill, 32 m asl. Thanks to the presence of Strombus bubonius and other Senegalese guests, the authors estimated that the molluscan fauna had lived around 125,000 years ago, during the Tyrrhenian stage. Recently on the initiative of the “Centro Studi e Documentazione Isola di Ustica”, a research has been initiated to verify the persistence of sand-layers mixed up with Tyrrhenian fossils, even though, in the last 50 years, that area has undergone great changes, because of earthworks which have sealed the deposit. The new research led to the discovery of a fossil assemblage formed by 22 taxa (16 species of gastropods and 6 of bivalves), characterized by the presence of some Senegalese guests and other accompanying species that can be associated with the Eutyrrhenian subunit (MIS 5.5). This is the main subject of this note, along with the suggestion to preserve what remains of the Ustica Tyrrhenian deposit.

Environment and Climate in Sicily over the last 20, 000 years. (IT ISSN 0394-3356, 2010). A series of recent studies shed light on the central Mediterranean, and Sicily, climate and environment, starting from the last glacial maximum (about 20 ka cal BP). In the present paper, we examine most of these works, in order to unravel environmental changes of the past, mainly in terms of temperature, atmospheric pattern, precipitation, vegetation and faunal associations. The climate of the last glacial maximum was characterised by very low temperature and by repeated northerlies penetration, even during summer. Low precipitation values led to a steppe- or semisteppe-like vegetation pattern, dominated by herbs and shrubs. Episodes of climatic anomaly, characterised by lower temperature and strengthened wind activity, could have occurred during the Holocene, as testified by micropaleontological and geochemical investigations carried out on the southern Tyrrhenian Sea and in the northern Sicily Channel. In the terrestrial record, there is evidence of drought at 8.2 ka cal BP, from the isotopic composition of a stalagmite recovered near Palermo, and of prolonged drought intervals during the Little Ice Age in the Erice village (Trapani). The vegetation pattern shows the development of Mediterranean Maquis in coastal sites and deciduous forests in sub-montane and montane regions, approximately from the Holocene base. The human impact is the main factor that forced the present vegetation pattern, as a consequence of intensive land-use, which started about 2.7 ka cal BP, when Greek colonies were first established. Human activity is however superimposed on a natural trend towards aridity, with climatic forces still not fully understood.
