Abstract

The Tore Supra tokamak is the largest superconducting magnetic fusion facility, has been devoted to long-duration high-performance discharge research. With a steady-state magnetic field and water cooled plasma facing components, discharges up to 6 minutes 24 seconds duration with injected / extracted energy up to 1 GJ have been performed. The Tore Supra real time measurements and control (RTMC) system has been upgraded to address schemes dedicated to long pulse operation with simultaneous control of an increasing number of plasma parameters. This includes plasma equilibrium control with possible self calibration during the discharge, plasma density control with possible pellet injection, current profile control to avoid magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities and infrared monitoring of plasma facing components preventing overheating. Most of these improvements are relevant to the tokamaks operation in a fully steady state regime.

Abstract

The dynamic retention of deuterium in a full-tungsten JET-like tokamak is investigated thanks to the Dynamics of Wall Elements (DWE) code. DWE is a wall model coupled to the SolEdge-EIRENE edge-plasma transport code. It is composed of two internal codes: (i) WE-temp, which determines the wall temperature, and (ii) MHIMS, which determines the transport, trapping and desorption of hydrogen isotopes in the wall material. In this work, four consecutive discharges are modeled and analysed with DWE. These discharges are identical and present a transition from a H-mode phase to a L-mode phase, which induces strongly different plasma-wall interactions. The main results are as follows. (i) A release of deuterium is observed at the vicinity of both strike-points at the end of the H-mode phase. This dynamics is explained by an increase of the wall temperature at both strike-points due to the strong plasma heat flux received there, leading to detrapping from trap with low detrapping energy. On the contrary, during the subsequent L-mode phase, the wall temperature at the strike-points decreases, leading to retention by filling the trap emptied during the H-mode. (ii) A release of deuterium from the first-wall is unexpectedly observed at the transition between the H-mode and the L-mode. This release is a consequence of a decrease in implantation energy between the two phases, as it entails a shallower implantation of deuterium. Despite the different material considered in the simulation, the latter result offers a possible explanation of the strong transient release of deuterium experimentally observed in the JET-ILW at the NBI cutoff during high density H-mode discharges.

International audience; High power experiments, up to 9.2 MW with LHCD and ICRH, have been carried out in the full tungsten tokamak WEST. Quasi non inductive discharges have been achieved allowing to extend the plasma duration to 53s at medium density (ne=3.7×10 19 m-3). Apart few pulses post-boronization, the plasma radiation is rather high (Prad/Ptot~50%) and is dominated by W. This fraction does not vary as the RF power is ramped up and, against expectations, it is quite similar in ICRH and/or LHCD heated plasmas. Hot L mode plasmas (Te(0)>3keV) with a confinement time following the ITER L96 scaling are routinely obtained, confirming the weak aspect ratio dependence of this scaling law. Tungsten accumulation is generally not an operational issue on WEST. Nonetheless, 25% of the of the discharges are affected by a rapid collapse of the central electron temperature which occurs when a slight decrease of Te leads to enhanced radiation causing flat or hollow current profiles. To this respect LHCD-only discharges are compared to ICRH and ICRH/LHCD discharges.

It cites on the advantages of the energy fusion with low environmental impact and virtually inexhaustible supplies of fuel in seawater. 23. Problems and Issues for Tokamak Long-Pulse Operation: Major Progress on Tore Supra

Abstract

AbstractDuring winter 2001–2002, the Tore Supra tokamak went through a major upgrade to provide a heat extraction capability of 25 MW in steady state (composants internes et limiteur project). In the new configuration, the operational domain has experienced a rapid extension. Indeed, discharges of more than 4 min have been performed with a world-record-breaking discharge accounting for 0.75 GJ of injected/extracted energy. Stationary discharges with fully noninductively driven current are performed routinely (typical parameters: plasma current, 0.52 MA; toroidal magnetic field, 4 T; lower hybrid power, ~3 MW, electron line density, 2.5 × 1019m–2), limited in duration by the original lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) system. Ion cyclotron waves [ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH)] have been coupled to plasma for 1 min in combination with LHCD in a higher-density scenario (Greenwald fraction of 0.8, 0.11 GJ of injected ICRH power for 0.42 GJ total injected power) and with a substantial fraction of bootstrap current (15 to 20%). Electron cyclotron current drive experiments are also carried out: A new world record of electron cyclotron injected energy has been established in a single electron cyclotron resonance heating pulse of 32 s (25 MJ). In these discharges, stable central electron temperature oscillations sometimes appear, probably due to the interplay between heat transport and current drive. Density profile peaking is observed despite the absence of toroidal electric field, suggesting the existence of a turbulent inward pinch. Finally, particle balance analyses indicate that the in-vessel deuterium inventory never reaches saturation. Many carbon deposits and flakes have been found in the inner vessel, possibly playing a role in the fuel retention.
